I was hoping they would be offering single day tickets. Perhaps they might in the weeks before the event? I wish I could afford the three day pass; but, unfortunately there is no way, right now. Oh well.
Edit: So I saw that last year's festival offered single day ticket sales, around June, once each day's line-up was secured. So, I'll be checking back around then/looking for their Twitter announcements for it. Glad to see that.

I'll be there, snagged my pass today. I was lucky to grab a $235, must have been only a few of them as a second request 10 seconds later only pulled up full-price tickets.

Ok, did a little digging (read: googled...) and apparently there might be one day tickets released later (possibly July). This is what someone said on FB: "Single day tickets would be available if they don't sell out of 3 day tickets. They've done this in the past and have been released in July. Hopefully they do this!!"

Yea, they tend to do single day tickets.

I'm not sure if people were listening to Live 105 KITS over the weekend, but they were giving away ticket's to Outside Lands for Father's Day and the grand prize winner of that contest would win tickets to a secret NIN rehearsal. Unfortunately, my sister was caller 8 when they asked for caller 10... I'm hoping there will be other opportunities to get in the drawing for this "secret NIN show"...

So, if the single day tix go on sale today, there's still no way of knowing which day NIN plays, correct? Or do the same headliners play all 3 days? Just curious as I'm still trying to secure any NIN CA tix. Thanks.

Most likely 8 as they are headlining. There's a strict 10pm curfew. If you show up later in the day be prepared to be v e r y far from the stage. It's a giant park. The alternative is sitting in the sun all day.

I've been thinking a lot about whether or not I want to go. On one hand, nine inch nails are playing here in just a few weeks(!). On the other, outside lands is a really shitty way to experience a show. Decisions decisions.

Just the fact that you're in a huge park crammed with 60,000 people. Even on the video screens the performers look like ants. Filthy porta potties in pitch black, people moving past you in both directions throughout the performance. And everything has a crazy line to wait in.

Frankly I'd rather drive to la for an arena show.

matt925
07-12-2013, 11:46 PM
But that was also the very negatives. I don't want to discourage people who have never been. The music is loud as hell, first of all, and you can work your way to the front. I would also just bet nine inch nails won't end up drawing as packed a crowd as radiohead or Metallica. Just go and make the most of it. If you are with friends and you get some drinks you will have a good time.

I don't mind OSL. They have great food and I love Wine Lands. It's pricey, but most music festivals are these days. My gripe with OSL is their tendency to oversell tickets and headliner areas or the new "indie" band with a hot radio single stages get overcrowded easily. For three days festivals, I'll camp a stage for one day, then use the other days to explore, unless there's a huge conflict. Less exhausting that way.

So, the south korea show just played a track from Dragon Tattoo. Karen O is playing directly before NIN at OSL (same stage too). Pretty good chance we will hear Immigrant Song?!?! Maybe?!?

The Nine Inch Nails performance will be streamed at http://www.ustream.tv/outsidelands at approximately 8:25PM Pacific on Saturday. I know there is already discussion happening in other threads but I wanted to post here in the tour journal for completeness. I'll be at Outside Lands and won't get to see the webcast until the ETS collective hopefully makes a great capture available.

You can calculate the time of the stream in your time zone by looking at the local time in San Francisco on this site http://24timezones.com/current_world_time.php and then matching it to the time in your area and adjusting.

I take public transit every day but I'm planning on avoiding it for the festival. I've never been to OSL but I am anticipating that any bus going toward it are going to be completely packed, especially when it ends at 10pm.

I'm probably going to park on the edge of the city somewhere and take some sort of Taxi/Uber/Lyft/Sidecar. If you aren't familiar with services like Uber, check it out. Cheaper, faster, and better than a taxi. Plus, you can usually find $20 or so in first time credits. That's what I am doing so it'll cover most of my trip there on Sat.

Parking site link. Note: You have to play with the map/use mapquest (or other mapping site) to get a general street address, plug it into the site (after you register) and it will give a list of available spaces/prices in the vicinity. You then print out your parking reservation. There were only a handful left, so, good luck:

Just got back and wow, great set and excellent energy. I was amazed that the middle of the crowd (directly in front of the soundboard) was quite empty. Late in the show, people kept pouring in, exclaiming how they couldn't believe how open the view was, from that vantage point. Met some cool people and sang along and/or shouted because, you know, it was a show, we were excited and enjoyed the hell out of it. Most of the crowd in my vicinity was singing along; not sure if it was slurred or not; but, wow, amazing show. I look forward to seeing what people managed to capture/upload from this concert. Glad they played Burn and Something I Can Never Have. Also dug that Trent used the effects mic during burn; really added what was missing from previous performances of that song (for me, at least). Damn, doubt I'll sleep much. Yeah Yeah Yeahs were also amazing! Since I'm not a fan of Phoenix, I was glad I didn't have to wait through their set (as it ran simultaneous to NIN).

I watched the stream and it sounded like he was singing it normally without the effects. In the Korean show recording you can hear the effects perfectly, but not at this show. Not from the stream anyway. It sounded amazing in Korea.

Trent's whispered lyrics were particularly audible. Thankfully, no random Hurt claps that often occur.

I haven't watched the stream, but I suppose it's possible that Outside Lands had different mixes for the P.A. and the stream, respectively, and the vocal distortion in "Burn" was only applied in the former. Different/incorrect effect routing or something.

BTW, I appreciated the setlist change: I loved that Piggy did not follow "March of the Pigs." Also, I Just want Something I can Never Have straight into Reptile was jarring, in a good way. Seriously, of the 18 shows I've attended, this one was really up there for me. Still digesting. Heh, it was funny how the weather was sunny, most of the day, then got dreary/drizzled once NIN took the stage. It's not unusual for S.F., but, still was cool mood-setting experience. I'm glad I managed to avoid the video (but not audio) recordings of the other festivals, allowing me to know the songs; but, still be surprised by the visuals.

Agreed. I don't care much for Piggy anyhow, and that was probably my favorite performance of SICNH ever. Even my friend, who isn't a NIN fan, was asking me questions about it since he loved it so much. The show was so good. NIN should have done a double headlining spot at OSL. :P

Heh, no worries: Yeah, I can imagine recording, cleanly, in the middle of that sea of humanity would be impossible. As I posted, earlier, the worst is people who are just talking (either on their phone or in general, about random things with their friends) while NIN is playing. That's just...NO! Do you ever have a problem getting a camera of that size through security?

Yeah, quite frequently. I'm always prepared to prove that it isn't pro/DSLR. If it's a GA show and I want rail, I get it approved by the house management prior to the doors opening and have them speak to whomever is searching my bag to inform them it's allowed. I've been delayed by a long questioning once, but I won't let it happen again. I've never had trouble at Staples Center and most large festivals though.

If you guys are looking to purchase a camera for shows, I do get similar results with smaller cameras too. These are taken with a Nikon S6300: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jessicasarahs/sets/72157632652185378/with/8429757347/

And these are with a Nikon S9100: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jessicasarahs/sets/72157629612224300/

Just have to play around and practice with your configurations to see what works best for the show's lighting. Also, the Nikon S9100 has better video and audio quality than my P100.

Jessica, your pictures are great! Thank you for sharing. I had VIP for Outside Lands and got to the corner of the rail at 1:00 and remained there throughout Saturday. My one semi-complaint is VIP puts you on the right side of the stage and you are farther away then GA but pay more money? It was great being by Robin, but all the shots I have are profile no head on shots. The other issue was the person filming the whole festival was right in front of me the whole time, so I could only see Trent from chest up for most of it. I think he moved right before HLAH... I was thrilled to see your pics and show was beyond amazing!!

Thanks, Tracy! Yeah, they really do put VIP in a strange area. But were the other perks worth it? I'm debating whether or not to get it next year just for the ease of access to restrooms, haha! It was nearly impossible to get to one on Sunday. I waited about 45 minutes. Ridiculous.

Thanks for the info and examples. Where are you standing for those pics? I'm usually standing by FOH for audio recording, so I imagine it would be difficult to get any pics like that from there.

No problem! I was on rail for those sets. I'm 5'1, so I have to be really up close or super far away to see anything. Here's a set with my P100 from the back of Staples Center. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jessicasarahs/sets/72157632607895044/) More blur, less crisp, etc.

Anyone have suggestions for some album art for the OSL rips? I'm having a hard time figuring something out.

I know JessicaSarahS has some great shots here:

Hi Jessica, Beside the strange area, it is well worth it. Never had to wait for a drink or a bathroom, (well not more than 5 minutes). I will probably always get VIP from here on out if I go to Outside Lands. I had GA in 2011 and the bathroon situation was a drag! We walked up really close for many bands on the same Lands End Stage like Artic Monkeys and the Black Keys cause I have some good shots from that year. Your cameras are so great that I think you would be able to still get great shots from the side.
