So who's going to be at Reading/Leeds this year? I'm very, very tempted to go just for the Sunday. At the moment it looks like it might be just me on my lonesome unless I can convince one of my friends to come along. What's the consensus on going solo at festivals, is it a lonely experience?

I'm going to both Reading and Leeds (Day tix just for the NIN days). I've never been to a festival on my own but wouldn't have a problem doing so. If you're in the crowd then you'll soon get talking to people inbetween bands (just stay away from the drunken idiots!). It is a long day to spend solo though so I'd probably go mid afternoon. Safety wise it's probably worth keeping close to groups of people when you leave the arena.

I did solo for Oxegen in 2009. More or less - my friend met me there but he fucked off for four hours and came back just before Jane's Addiction to get to where I was (I was in the Trent Spot). It's a long day, but there were two others who did all-day with me in the middle and we had a great time. It's not all bad!

Same. Going to both on my own(and Belfast). Never had an issue finding people to speak to/hang out with. In fact, I've met some awesome friends this way and have been friends for years and attend other shows together.

Im going to go, out of principle, obviously not thrilled as i know the state of the Reading Festival these days but should be good. Its unfortunate to say the least im going to have to sit through Fall Out Boy who are on before NIN lol, Radical transition No? Oh well waited through Lost Prophets last time. But got too drunk.
But NIN at the 2007 Reading show, it was possibly the best time i ever saw them live, such an incredible atmosphere. way way better than i expected, shocked how good it turned out, there are some good youtube clips of it, it was absolutely wonderful, had such low expectations, and they drew a bigger crowd than The Smashing Pumpkins who were headlining above them. Weather was gorgeous, hopefully it will turn out similar this time.
The line up for Reading Festival this year is just a woeful and seems like it is aimed at a 14 year old boy in 2001.
System of a Down who have not released an album for nearly 10 years, Greenday, Eminem , Fall Out Boy etc...

Definitely an odd setlist. I could see how a newcomer wouldn't find the first half too stimulating though. Not a lot of upbeat, "rock"-y songs in there. The second half pretty much all rage though.

I've been to NIN club gigs right after festivals, before, and Trent has always made some comment about how fucking awful the crowds can be so perhaps that was his attitude.

Just got back from Reading - it was a fucking awesome gig. There was no hate where I was, got to hear the new stuff despite no production. Finally heard Me, I'm Not and The Warning. The crowd where I was clapped along to Disappointed with no prompting. Lots of people enjoying it who you wouldn't think would be into NIN, great

just got back and i'm knackered so i'll keep this brief.

they rocked. absolutely blew most of the other bands out of the water.

I was there with my kids so i wasn't deep in the pit or anything. Kept a safe distance but got a decent view due to the size of the crowd....more of that later.

trent was obviously VERY pissed off and almost spat every line that could be directed at the organisers. any time a lyric said "fuck you" he seemed to shout it a little more than usual. he kept disappearing to the back of the stage into the (very heavy) smoke and you could just catch him shouting at somebody on the video screens. there were a few moments where I thought we were about to get either a speech or a "somethings gonna get broken" moment but they held it together and just delivered a brilliant set of two halves.

as has been pointed out before by other people, the first part was mostly promotional. you can see from the setlist it seems to be the tunes that they specifically wanted to play or the label wanted them to play.

then they got angry.

and blew the roof off.

While the crowd was a LOT smaller than it was for fall out boy (kids eh?) there were obviously a lot of people there who didn't really know who NIN were but had stayed around anyway....and for every disinterested teen there was another voice somewhere deep in the crowd saying "wow, these guys are really good"

i've got a couple of short-ish vids that i might stick up if the quality is any good and nothing better surfaces.

That was fucking excellent.
i knew something was up when the usual screens didn't come out, they had a wall of strobes like at the O2 in '09.
the set was so good. The low-key technoish drum machine stuff built a steady load of dancing with the faithful there early (I wasn't close to the front and there was a lot of dancing). I thought we were in for a Sonisphere repeat actually. It was exciting to not know where the set was going.
Somewhat Damaged was an arrangement that started with kinda ambient noises, then vocals, the RIFF. Soon as they hit that I knew the backend was going to be HEAVY. It bridged those two sets perfectly.
Burn was so fucking savage.
to me, Trent looked like he enjoyed it but who knows. The end was super abrupt, and twenty minutes short.
they started in daylight but by the heavy section it was total darkness, the lights were incredible.
i thought it was probably the best NIN show I've seen tbh. the unpredictability of it was exciting, and the constant mood in each half worked so well, it really let me lock into the vibe.

It was probably logistical since all of the songs up until SD are more electronic based, and played with a particular set of instruments. Haven't seen video, but I'm guessing they had the stage set for those songs then moved to the rock stuff since they got fucked on their production. I love how they ended with Wish, I think that was only done on some of the Aussie shows in 2009.

But I actually saw the full production screens behind the black curtain while they were setting up, why would NIN shaft their own production as it took so much time and effort to make. I was at the right of the stage, and although crowd were fairly subdued during first half of set, they were clapping along, although didn't seem to know anything about the band - someone next to me asked if Trent was the singer after he had started singing. But during Beginning Of The End a few fans started appearing, and by end of Wish, whole place was jumping (bar those that were at the front waiting for Biffy). Having seen the band quite a few times, was delighted that got to hear new and more unusual tracks - thought it was one of the best performances I have seen them give. Although it would have been nice to see the light show, did like the freedom of not playing the arranged tracks gave them. Roll on April!

I agree with this. But its the scheduling I can't understand. You have system of a down, NIN, deftones, and countless other heavy bands on and you stick NIN there?

Surely NIN under System and Biffy under Green Day would've made much more sense.

I think TR was a little naive to think he would get any sort of production values at all when he wasn't the headliner and I think he is completely out of line with the BC slur - its not the first time he has been disparaging towards them either - as soon as they were announced he came out with similar missives - if they were told about this then you can hardly blame them if they had any involvement in what occurred.

Also - I'm not sure who was responsible on the band's side for getting them on this bill, but Leeds and Reading is really unsuitable to the kinds of audience that NIN attracts. The demographic seems to be 14-15 year old emo kids. Apart from anything else, at this point in his career, Trent Reznor should really not be playing support to anyone.......

During the LITS tour, I remember people leaving the venue when Hurt started. I guess they thought it was the last song but In This Twilight was coming next and many missed it. A surprise might sometimes come next, who knows ;)

You can tell in this performance that Trent isn't very happy with things, especially during The Warning where it seems like he's just mocking with his movements and wearing a hoodie while Josh Eustis seems to have a shit eating grin on his face about it. They also ramped up the fog machines to the point where you can barely see the band perhaps as a statement, but it makes the performance look amazing in certain ways.

I was very close to the stage but the kids around me were so boring ... I felt they are in a wrong gig or waiting for the next band... it wasnt a good vibe unfortunately .. sounded good but the Scala gig is what THE CONCET this at Reading was something else ... Looking forward to see NIN in Milan tomorrow

The songs they've played live so far from HM are basically a hipster's wet dream, and that's who populates Reading. But yeah, pretty much any time NIN plays live to strangers the audience gets a shock.

It sucks, but i can understand it.

Trent's been going around the whole media-circus thing with interviews and magazine cover stories making a big deal over the stage show (which IS excellent) and if I was in his position I'd be concerned about being made to look like a dick

imagine the average viewer at home who has listened to the BBC interviews, read the NME cover story etc, then they tune in to the reading set and think "wtf? is that IT? a few backing lights and strobes? what's the big deal"

without getting the bbc and reading's streaming to put up a notice saying "the band regret that they havent been able to put on the show they promised" i think i'd want it pulled too

that wasn't the crowd i saw! i was only there for a day but it was FULL of my-first-festival teenagers wearing Fosters boxes on their heads!

sorry, that's pretty irrelevant. but i wouldn't have said it was a particular hipster crowd.
i also think NIN won over big parts of the crowd tbh.

Anyway. If I was Trent (which I'm told im not) I would've pulled the broadcast. As a fan I love that we have it, especially given how unusual a setlist it is. But for the casual viewer expecting an amazing production it must've been anti-climatic.

The amount of smoke is ridiculous, must've been done on purpose I reckon to scupper any possibility of broadcast, but it actually looks really good! Though during those 2 songs, didn't see Ilan once! dont know about you but this is one of my favourite streams so far.
i know it wasnt what trent wanted but the setlist, production etc.... was so obscure. the production is choreographed which is brilliant but seeing it stripped back its quite fun to watch now and again
in terms of pissed of trent, i love him these days. normally guitars would be trashed etc.......but he just took the piss out of the festival. especially during the warning. those vocals were hilarious
oh and did the video editors have massive hard on for josh. ya he is pretty but....come on.

In that situation, it's probably the director (live multicam), but I would hedge a bet that Josh just happened to be in the least smokey spot... Hence the exhaustive coverage - if you can get the clearest shot of someone, they're probably going to keep going back there.

We played a purposely quiet, intimate set. I figured it would either enrage or baffle the metal audience... but to our amazement it went over great!
Really fun set to play in that environment.

there are two noticeable NIN fans (girl with red dread locks and guy with NIN shirt singing along to terrible lie), but otherwise I have to agree with your statement. Pretty much every shot of the crowd has some ridiculous people freaking out about the sheer awesomeness that is TR even without a proper light show and too much smoke. Sad and bored girl during somewhat damaged is a fave though! :D

This is my favorite stream after Fuji and before Rock n Heim.

yes, very quiet and intimate, with I Do Not Want This, The Wretched, Wish in the setlist...just a clusterfuck of a setlist, thrown together with total disregard and a complete lack of understanding as to the nature of the concert. A HUGE amount of people were there to see NIN do what was to be their last ever UK show and Trent just went on, played a weird setlist that just didnt work then walked off stage early, lol.
