For past few years I have consistently gone back to this legendary enigmatic, reclusive Scottish duo's catalog. Not sure what i like about them so much. I like them more now than ever.
Think their music does different things for everyone. A lot of people mention Nostalgia, for me not so much....their music evokes a strange feeling but i cant quite put my finger on. Whenever i used to listen to their music images of the vast desolate cold Canadian wilderness sprung to mind.

But now i interpret their sound differently i see it as a lot warmer and more complex. They have about 4 unreleased albums which have been floating about on the web for ages now, material from the early 90s a lot of it is mindblowing too and contains some of their best material. And some bootlegs of their live performances have some stunning unreleased music too. Music has the Right to Children is probably my favorite, Campfire Headphase is the one which is their least interesting to my mind.
Specific tracks like Aquarius, Roygbiv Olson, Nine Rubber Wisdom, Echus, Iced Cooley, Dayvan Cowboy, Buckie High are some of my favorites .

They said a year ago they are in the process of making a new record, hopefully we will see it this year.

Music Has the Right to Children is one of my favorite records of all time and I discovered Boards of Canada around a time I was just starting college and completely new finding out about all kinds of music from downloading and reading about random acts online.

I believe MHTRTC was in a data disc mix that a friend let me borrow and through my first listen, I was hooked. It's ambiance and attention to detail was so incredible and the music took me to another world. I loved it and still hold it in such incredible regard.

Probably my favorite song by them...hard to pick though.

Their other records are really good too, but MHTRTC is just so amazing. I really, really hope we see another record from them. With Daft Punk and Aphex Twin apparently having records ready for release, this power house duo needs to return as well.

Geogaddi is a fucking trip. It's one of those albums I'll never tire of. Their other albums are great and all, but Geogaddi is just transcendent. I've always felt BoC picked up where The Orb left off with UFOrb, Orbus Terrarum and Pomme Fritz. Geogaddi sounds like the perfect union of those albums IMHO.

They said a year ago they are in the process of making a new record, hopefully we will see it this year.

Where/when did they say this, and they being who, and worst of all, was it last April 1st? i have this really strong feeling that we won't be hearing from them again...that MHTRTC, Geogaddi and TCH were a kind of trilogy, with the first one being the young, innocent, hip pot smokiness; the second being a descent into a kind of (possibly hallucinogen induced) madness; and the third being memories of those days. Twoism, ABPOITC, etc, are their own entities.

Strangely enough, The Campfire Headphase is my favorite of the three "big ones." Geogaddi is amazing but also hard to listen to and fairly disturbing. I guess MHTRTC is the one i listen to the most after TCH.

A lot of the noises that BOC use remind me of the sounds heard in those films they used to show us in school about the solar system and such, especially on tracks like Kid for Today.

I can't put my finger on why, i just have this feeling that they were a beautiful, mysterious, elusive force of nature that existed and is over. Luckily, one discovers new sounds and layers nearly every time a BOC record is played.

I hope i'm wrong about BOC being over. i've been surprised before (Portishead 3, Trent's decision to tour again and not have it be some off the wall shit like just him and a piano, the Dallas Mavericks winning a championship.)

I love BOC most of all, i think, because their music somehow softly, and yes, warmly, manages to convey at once an innocence, a celebration of nature, and a mirror of consciousness (yes, i feel that it is THAT deep,) complete with awe, fear, and the simple yet INSANELY complex dichotomy of the very essence of the miracle of human existence.

I cant believe its been 8 years since their last album. 2005 seems like the other week.

This type of activity from BOC means there is a new album on the way. They are always cryptic and weird before revealing their music.
June date is feesable. Hopefully a new track will be out in a week or two.

I wonder if the 8 year gap was them taking time reinventing themselves. Portishead took 11 years to make Third they really didn't want to sound like they had before. Be interesting to see where they can go with their sound.
Or it could be just like My Bloody Valentine, take a really long gap and come back with an album that sounds exactly the same.

They've progressed so perfectly in their career that I honestly would recommend in chronological order from 'MHTRTC' onwards until 'Trans Canada Highway', and then 'Twoism'. From Pitchfork.com (http://pitchfork.com/news/50908-watch-boards-of-canada-debut-a-new-song-in-detroit/)...

Boards of Canada have already dropped an official hint that we can expect something from them at 5 p.m. PDT toda (http://pitchfork.com/news/50899-boards-of-canada-tease-something-that-will-happen-tomorrow/)y-- but in the meantime, the duo appeared to premiere a new song at Detroit's Movement Electronic Music Festival last night. Just before Squarepusher (http://pitchfork.com/artists/3921-squarepusher/) took to the stage, a song that 2020k suggests (http://2020k.wordpress.com/2013/04/20/boards-of-canada-distribute-new-vinyl-releases-out-for-national-records-day/) is called "Cold Earth" was broadcast over the soundsystem, with accompanying pink visuals. 2020k point to an oblique tweet (https://twitter.com/WarpRecords/status/338817207364640769) from Warp Records (http://warp.net/) as confirmation of its composers: "Tonight at Movement main stage in Detroit @_Squarepusher headlines and something earlier".

Was expecting after the huge gap that they would have evolved their sound somewhat artists tend to get stale constantly repeating their format after a while, but im surprised how much it does not bother me here. They keep finding ways to make what they do excellent. Their are about 4 astounding tracks and the rest are classic BOC. i really like it considering the fact it sounds almost exactly like everything they have done before but that's not a bad thing.

Loving Nothing is Real and Palace Posy the most. I think this is definitely their most direct less blurry 'warmest' if thats possible for them and most emotional work.

Can't wait for an extended mix of sorts for Palace Posy - wish the end went on longer - Split Your Infinities might be my favorite right now

I've listened to this entire album 5 times now in proper headphones and I am beyond thrilled this exists! :)

For whatever reason, today I spun the album in it's intended 33rpm but then decided to spin it again doing 45 and it sounded really fucking cool.

The most cohesive album Boards of Canada have ever produced. I feel like it is their masterwork. Something builds and develops throughout the album like a story unfolding. It's ominous, mysterious and even sad. The main theme reappears throughout the album.... Like the alien conspiracy on x files before it got cheesy.

this is the third album i've felt this way about this year (the other two being ...Like Clockwork by QOTSA and Shaking The Habitual by The Knife): it is perfect. it flows seamlessly from beginning to end, and i feel changed when i come out the other side.

like ...Like Clockwork (but unlike Shaking The Habitual), the artwork is incredibly gorgeous, and all three also sound fantastic on vinyl.

I've yet to listen to BOC, I'll lend my ear to them in a bit after I get set up at work.

These guys are from my hometown...

i don't know if i'd recommend starting with the new album...maybe start with campfire headphase, work backwards, and then listen to the new album.

i'm back on this thread after a few months of listening to this album. it's great, but challenging...a little hard to listen to in a way, like Geogaddi. But it's rewarding. Anyway i wanted to ask if you guys think the album tells a story, and if so, what is the story about?

I think it does. I think it's about some sort of apocalypse and what the few survivors do in the aftermath. i can just SEE it.

I was listening to Tomorrow's Harvest while reading Do Android's Dream of Electric Sheep and it went with the book really well.

It was fucking awesome.

Some new Boards of Canada. Even if it's just a remix I hope it inspires them to make a new album.

I wonder if anyone in the world has the first demos of their music and is willing to share them online, heard it's extremely rare to get a hold of them to buy and also stream nowadays. Any thoughts/theories?

Oh, Jesus. So, i just looked this Nevermen up, and it's fucking Mike Patton with DOSEONE?!

hey BRoswell : i've a funny story about Doseone/Subtle and BoC. I saw Subtle in an obscure club with about 60 people in it, in Dallas, in 07 or so.

And, after the show, i walked up to meet the "live pa man/dj" guy in the group, Gel.
This was my first experience with Anticon ANYTHING. SO, i say to Gel: Man, you're REALLY badass. I love the music you're making. You know like, Boards of Canada..." and he cut me off saying, "Oh yeah, i know those guys. I just saw them a couple weeks ago."
I meant "you know boards of canada" as in "have you HEARD Boards of Canada," and was going to suggest that his work reminded me of them

I was fucking stunned, lol. That was one hell of a flex.

Out of respect for the secrecy, i just said "word, killer. You sound a bit like those guys," and didn't ask him any BoC questions- plus, i was 27, and wanted to seem I-C-E cold. A pretty girl had asked ME out to this particular show, so, i wasn't gonna fanboy over ANYTHING, you know? :P

SO!

Remixed by Boards of Canada- NOT Hell Interface.

Could we be seeing another BoC LP soon?

Good god, i hope so. And i hope it's not as fucking GRIM as the last one. I utterly adore everything they've ever put out, but Tomorrow's Harvest is just fucking depressing on another level.

I need to revisit it.

I mean, I like sad music...obviously. Look where we are.
But that thing was just on a different LEVEL. I only listened to it a few times.

I DID make a badass clock out of the CD artwork, though.

You make an interesting point though about the sound. The album came out around a "down" time period in my life, maybe that's why I connected with it. I haven't listened to it in a long time, maybe I should revisit as well.
