@marilynmanson (https://twitter.com/marilynmanson) played like 64 minutes! Crowd is pissed! What a fat out of shape assclown #mydayinla (https://twitter.com/hashtag/mydayinla?src=hash)
@marilynmanson (https://twitter.com/marilynmanson) really is just a novelty now. His band is ready to roll but they can't force him to continue. Shame

That clip is awesome! Thanks. Someone on Youtube claims "The name of the song is 'deep six' the name of the album is 'the pale emperor' - Said they discovered it by using TrackID. I'm also hearing that it'll be officially released in December.
An obvious track to tide us over until the new ones drop:

Jesus Christ... The whole goddamn venue is recording Sweet Dreams? Fuck Off.
the name of the album is 'the pale emperor' -
Hmm... according to this news article before "Third Day..." was about to drop (Which could be wrong), it says the album title is "Deep Six"
"Third Day of a Seven Day Binge” will be free to fans early next week, we are hearing Tuesday.. The song is being released in conjunction with the announcement of his new album “Deep Six” that is set for an early 2015 release."
http://www.wqlz.com/2014/10/24/marilyn-manson-to-give-fans-new-song-for-free/
I mean, there is always a track name on the album that is the same name of the album, so it wouldn't surprise me if it is "Deep Six", but that doesn't seem like a Marilyn Manson album title... seems a little too.... Matthew Good Band.

Yeah, he has a way of lassoing his fans back in when a new album drops. Only issue is, once you pay for a 64 min headlining show and get 12 shitty singles, you go running for the hills again. Until he releases a new album and sucks everyone in again.
I'm putting my foot down on this tour, not going to see one of his headlining concerts.
If he happens to be co-headlining or on the same bill as other bands at a show I attend, that's different... but not giving him another dime until he starts playing at least an extra half hour sets. Playing for an hour is a huge slap in the face to the fans.
If Trent and friends or Dave Grohl and friends or even Robert Smith and friends can all play between 2 and 3 hour long sets, surely this guy can wise-up, put the sauce down and sing a few extra songs.
The sad thing is, according to someone who got a setlist at Provider Module, "Mister Superstar" and "Irresponsible Hate Anthem" were on the list, but were cut... cutting an already short set even shorter doesn't make any sense.
Don't fall for this guys tricks. He's going to start puking and rolling on the ground as the tour goes on.

Having never been to one of his shows, it would still be nice to have at least done it once. I like going to concerts, I like the atmosphere and crowds and sense of an event, and I was planning to see Interpol who only do 12 song sets as it is anyway. At worst I have a good time with friends, at best I get a good show out of it. I can see why you're not going though if you've been to the last several tours, that's totally fair.

I won't be roped in to seeing him on tour. But I still like his albums. Now if he could become co-host of Talking Dead, that would be awesome! But as far as the album being called Deep Six.. the mods at the providermodule swear up and down that that's not the album title. I approached them about "Third Day" and Deep Six early last week, and they confirmed the single but said the album title was incorrect. We shall see..

The snippets I've heard of Deep Six, Cupid Carries a Gun, and Killing Strangers sound very promising. Third Day of a Seven Day Binge is growing on me, although the song caught me off guard the first time I listened to it. It has a very relaxed feeling to it. It feels like waking up from a long night of drinking in the middle of the afternoon, fighting through the pain of a massive hangover while stumbling to your kitchen, and promptly guzzling down another drink. There's a carefree vibe to it that I enjoy and the guitar drives that aspect home.
As for his live performances: I never had the chance to see Marilyn Manson live in his prime because I was a little kid. Fans have really torn him apart over the last ten years about his past tours, and even more superficial ones have attacked him for gaining weight. To the latter, most people as they age also gain weight. It's a sad fact, but it's true. Go look at pictures of your parents when they were teenagers and in their twenties compared to how they look now and the change will surprise most of you. As to the performances I've seen, my first show was in January 2008 at Hard Rock Live in Orlando, FL when Twiggy came back. The place was packed, the crowd was insane, Marilyn Manson, Twiggy, and the entire band were spot on and put on a show for ninety minutes, roughly fifteen or sixteen songs, and I loved it. The second time I saw them was at Mayhem 2009 and the set-up was different. Marilyn Manson was clearly drunk or high off his ass, Twiggy seemed content with staying in the corner strumming the guitar, the crowd started throwing things like shoes and beer bottles the moment they all took the stage, and the performance was received very negatively by the crowd. My personal opinion, Manson screwed up maybe four times and the band might have been dead energy-wise, but the overall performance was still good. They were on for an hour (a common time for headliners performing at a festival). I didn't leave disappointed.
Third and last time, for now, was on May 1st, 2012 when Born Villain came out. The band had loads more energy and Manson's voice sounded great. I think everyone there was really excited for the new album and Marilyn Manson fed off that energy and put on a great show. They played for ninety-minutes. Honestly, a performance doesn't need to be two or three hours to be great. If a band performs for an hour but that hour is fantastic, than who cares about the length? Granted, I wasn't there in California so I can't speak about the quality of the show itself, but my experiences with seeing Marilyn Manson live have been positive ones despite everyone's negative reviews of his past tours. I think it's exactly what happens on the internet with anything: Negativity is blown out of proportion.

Yeah all the songs sound pretty dull. Just meandering structures with enough slower time to allow him to kneel at the front of the stage for a few minutes and catch his breath. Listen to the drumming in that Cupid Carries A Gun song...just the same beat for 5 minutes. Guy must be falling asleep behind the kit.

Yeah, wtf was that show last night? I spent longer waiting for it (arrived @ 8), than he actually played.
He seemed disinterested and pissed the whole time. And I was too. No I don't want to hear mobscene and This is the new shit! Play fucking Crucifixion in Space and Coma White/Black, or just anything pre 2003.
Last night he said, 'you're the first to be a part of theeese Los Angleees experiences,' and I thought, 'hell yeah, an experience, that means he's going to pull some awesome shit!' I even remember hearing people on here speculate...I didn't want to believe those people who were saying 'he's probably just going to be fucked up and stumble through a shit setlist.' I should have listened to those posts.
I'll steal the album, but I'm not giving him any more money.
All that being said, I did like the new songs (though at the time, I thought they were THEOL or BV songs-never really got into THEOL and still haven't heard BV (except We're from America).
Hope those Roxy shows end up being better than this one. Good luck guys.

If you've never seen him before you'll enjoy at it least a bit - and being brutally honest if you have a few beers it goes down better. I remember getting very drunk, seeing them at Brixton and really enjoying it, then watching a bootleg later pretty much through my fingers.

I wouldn't mind a Marilyn Manson VS KMFDM Collaboration. Something like that could save both bands' careers.
Or just bring Tim Skold back.

It's true people are sometimes catty about his weight - but it does affect his performance. Iggy, Trent, Bruce Dickinson... all getting on, all still in good shape and give decent energised performances. MM's old yeah and the older you get the worse the fight with gravity gets, but there's no denying he drinks his arse off and has done a lot of the damage to himself

Agreed. I was pretty horrified at the Born Villain live era. I will say though with Tyler Bates on board, musically it makes a world of difference. I wish he'd stop playing Sweet Dreams, Rock is Dead, etc. Excited for decent audio of these show to surface.
My gf complains about the weight gain, but I definitely don't see that as the issue. It's definitely the drinking and the drugs taking their toll. Live he stumbles around, missing simple lines, accentuating random words for no reason, while the band looks like they're doing their damndest to hold the songs together.

I agree his drinking and drug use, as well as his weight, has affected his performance. I was simply referring to the fact that there are people out there who consider themselves Manson fans, who will watch videos, go to shows, analyze every publicity photo, and do nothing but yell, "MANSON'S FAT! I HATE HIM NOW! WHY IS MANSON FAT? RARRR!!!" Essentially, people who overlook everything else and just rip on him for gaining weight. Manson could put out a superb album that wins awards and sells millions of copies and those types of 'fans' would never see past his weight gain.

Aye it's true, dickheads will be dickheads no matter what - before he was fat, he was dismissed because kids liked him and he wore makeup etc. People thought they were terribly clever saying stuff like "did you know his real name's brian? It's just an act you know". Yeah we know. I know the drummer of KISS isn't really a cat as well. He definitely deserved more critical acclaim in the 90s than he ever got. If it wasn't for Sweet Dreams and Beautiful People being so huge, I think he would be a massively respected cult artist and ACSS would regularly feature on muso lists of the best ever whatevers

My take:
Deep Six sounds awesome! I like the other bits of new songs i've heard also so i'm looking forward to the new album.
The live show is a different kettle of fish. I'm a big fan of Manson and have been for almost 15 years now. The live show really lets him down. He has an amazing back catalog, has worked with some awesome guitarists, drummers, bassists etc and it has all gone to waste in recent years. Firstly, bands should play at least an hour and a half sets. If this show only went for an hour then that's really poor. There wasn't even an opening act either. Secondly, the setlist has hardly changed over the years. He brings back a gem like Coma White and it only gets played 50% of the time and then is ditched the next tour. He needs to ditch some of the crappy singles. Thirdly he needs to get into shape - he is overweight and obviously drugs and alcohol don't help it. I think he has a problem with breathing onstage, I remember seeing in his old tour videos he would go back stage to suck oxygen. I honestly don't think he could do a 2 hour show.
If you look at all the tours in order, you can see the live show builds up through AS, MA and HW and then after GAOG the decline. The Greatest Hits album tour was still to a good standard and then from EMDM onwards the sets have shortened, the same singles get played every night, any new props or backdrops have been half arsed.
He needs to play 14-15 songs, 12 is a fucking Joke.
One thing that bugs me about his vocals these days, is they seem really lazily delivered at times. Like in the new song, the word already a bunch of times. Ugh.

I can't speak for anybody else who criticizes his weight, but I wouldn't care IF he was still performing at a high level, had a kickass stage show and was capable of playing longer than 65 minutes. That's a really big "if", though. Almost as big as Manson's fat fuckin' ass!

That's what everyone here has said forever. Couldn't care less if he weighed 600 lbs and wore a pink gorilla suit. As long as the shows didn't suffer, and it was clear that he cared more about his fans and the work than the bottle and himself. Clearly not the case. If he was still giving it his all and not worried about who he was seen with, and what tv shows he was in, and blah blah blah then who cares how fat his ass got.

I actually think the acting in TV shows path is a step in the right direction. Also, working with Tyler Bates and getting his music out there in films and shows is awesome. Killing Strangers was one of my favorite aspects of John Wick. I don't watch Salem, but the song fits well as an opening. Not sure about SOA yet though.. He doesn't seem very dangerous or scary compared to previous Nazis on the show. Hopefully he'll do some crazy shit toward the end of the season. I could totally see Third Day being played on that show though, although I read recently that Kurt Sutter (creator of SOA) had a song he'd written for Manson to sing during season 6, but it didn't fit anywhere so they're planning on trying to include it in this final season. I wonder how many people think he's really Nazi with his MM swastika-ish tattoo on his chest? LOL.

As far as his vocals go, his voice has been fucked up since the EMDM tour really, and it's only gotten worse. If anything the footage we're seeing from this recent show sounds like an improvement from a lot of what he was doing on the BV tour and even BV itself (his voice sounded ruined on so many songs). I think there's just a certain realistic expectation you've got to have in that department these days, it seems like the damage he's done to his voice between drinking and the constant attempts at screaming over the years have taken a toll that you can only recover so much from.
He looks physically better now than he did a while ago, but at the same time the biggest reason I and a lot of people mention his weight is because it clearly affects his energy levels, and he seems so erratic, in that I've seen footage from the past tour where he looked huge, then literally a month later seemed to have slimmed down considerably; his weight seems to fluctuate well past any healthy range, and it's both bad for energy levels which shows in his live performances and set lengths and causes genuine health concerns. Here's a 40+ year old guy who seems to put on and shed ~30 pounds constantly, admits proudly to drinking heavily and still seems to snort tons of cocaine while having a well-known heart condition that caused him to need an oxygen mask at even his energetic high point (the GGG tour specifically). He seems to just be disregarding and playing with his physical well-being like nothing really counts, and as someone who has had some severe weight fluctuations in my own life at times, that kind of rapid gain and loss really fucks with your energy. When you lose it suddenly you feel fucking great and immortal and just feel more full of energy, but when you rapidly put it back on doing anything at all physically seems like an impossible chore. You shouldn't have to worry about the grown artist you're a fan of not living through another tour, but I remember a lot of fans doing just that on the last one.
The studio stuff we've heard so far sounds far clearer, more concise and more consistent in direction than anything since EMDM, and that's great. THEOL was all over the place, BV was half gold and half gold-painted shit, and his voice now seems far less dodgey than it has recently. People complain about the slower style he seems to be leaning towards, but really, when he was trying to sound heavier and harder on the past two records I remember everyone bitching that he was trying to hard and should slow down, and you could hear him strain vocally to reach those points. The less attempts he makes at being loud and heavy and trying to make another ACSS, the better he'll actually sound. If anything Third Day reminds me of things like Four Rusted Horses and I Put a Spell On You, and that's great as far as I'm concerned. Better than his 90+ attempts at sounding like "death metal" as he so self-described BV, or "ACSS 2" as he so self-described THEOL.
I'll admit my expectations are super fucking low for this guy, and I have far more bands to follow and enjoy now than I did back when I was a really big fan of him, so it's less a big deal to me, but at the moment he seems a lot better than he has in a while, and that's great. Funny enough, as shitty as the hour long set may be, I was asking in the Interpol thread about just that, and everyone said "Well, it's still a great show so even if it's on the shorter side, it's worth seeing," and unless the tickets to see MM are past 50 bucks, I can't say it's too terrible of a length. Plus, do you guys really want to see another opener? Remember the last one, fucking Butcher Babies? All anyone did was complain about how shit the opener was last tour.
Also, he's got a trend of doing fairly stale sets the first part of a tour, then as it goes and they all warm up to it, starting to introduce new things. Dissociative got played for the first time ever last tour on the back half of it, Coma White/Black came back for a bit, they did that James Hall cover, etc. It's shitty that it works that way, but then again a lot of people said the same shit about NIN this year on their summer tour (granted even when the sets were fairly plain the shows themselves were out of this world, so don't think I'm even remotely comparing the actual quality there).

Twiggy is sober and has been for 3-4 years I believe. There is a recent Ginger Fish interview where he talks about it. I saw Twiggy at a Horror Con and talked to him a bit, he wouldn't touch a beer or even smoke a bowl. He seemed pretty disinterested in Manson too. He was far more interested in talking about Goon Moon. I think Manson at this point is just a paycheck and he basically puts on the dress and pretends to be best friends with the fuckup.

I'm surprised how little Mister Superstar has been played live... only 10 times? 5 times in 1997 and 5 times in 2014. Why was this song not a regular song during the ACSS days is what I am wondering... It's probably my favourite song off that album. It's shocking how little it's been played. What's even more shocking is it took 17 years to resurface live.

In general pretty much all of his best songs get passed over for the typical "greatest hits" show with, if you're lucky, 3 or so new songs. His whole "Nothing from EMDM or THEOL" and "Nothing but singles from Golden Age and Holy Wood" really restrict him already, and then he totally ignores Portrait, so you're left with a handful of Antichrist Superstar songs, a few from MA and whatever the new album is along with his bigger covers. Having never seen any of his stuff live, I honestly wouldn't mind seeing a lot of the "hits" for the first time, but I totally get why a lot of fans complain about the sets and have for a long time.
As far as Portrait goes, Dogma, Cake & Sodomy, Get Your Gunn, Lunchbox, Organ Grinder, etc., I don't really see why it is that none of those things have been brought back. It's full of material that lends itself to a live format.
Honestly it seems like he goes against playing anything that the current members weren't involved in. Twiggy didn't have anything to do with Portrait, so guess what album gets no rotation? Holy Wood was when he was on his way out, so guess what little of gets done? Golden Age and EMDM were with his replacement, so guess what we see nothing from beyond New Shit and mObscene? THEOL was mostly hated by fans and critics, so guess what he ignores?

I think he's played Get Your Gunn in the last few years a couple of tours. Which is cool, but he could play much better tracks from POAAF and it doesn't stick in the setlist very long.
He actually played that one of the recent European tour (http://www.mansonwiki.com/wiki/Summer_2014_Tour:_Summer_European_Leg)

In general pretty much all of his best songs get passed over for the typical "greatest hits" show with, if you're lucky, 3 or so new songs. His whole "Nothing from EMDM or THEOL" and "Nothing but singles from Golden Age and Holy Wood" really restrict him already, and then he totally ignores Portrait, so you're left with a handful of Antichrist Superstar songs, a few from MA and whatever the new album is along with his bigger covers. count yourself lucky, don't know how many times I snoozed through tainted love and personal jesus.
Does anybody actually like that Tainted Love cover? I really loved the Gloria Jones and Soft Cell versions... in fact me and my mates used to say MM should do a cover of it. But man that was bad, just has no... anything... it's not catchy, it's not abrasive, it's not dancey. Such a fail... and yet in the UK it was his biggest hit yet, went to #5 in the singles chart IIRC. Bizarre.

It's probably too much effort (read: pain in the ass) for him to re-learn and rehearse all the old songs. Now he can go through 3/4 of show on autopilot, so why bother? Last time Manson actually improved his setlists was in 2008 when Twiggy returned.

The "Go take a Piss / Snoozefest" song for me had always been "Sweet Dreams". I understand why he plays it, it's what rocketed him into the mainstream, but damn am I ever sick of hearing that cover live. Never really cared for Personal Jesus or Tainted love all that much, would rather have an original MM song in their place.

He played POAAF songs with Twiggy in the band for years. Now there's a competent guitarist again there's no reason he couldn't at least do Lunchbox again. It's a trademark Manson song.
I can understand Manson playing the hits he does, the issue is he only played 12 or 13 songs. Once his biggest 5 hits and good live anthems like Disposable Teens and Rock is Dead get played along with 3 or 4 new songs there's no room for deeper cuts. He needs to play 15-20 song sets like every other headlining band does. It's not like Tool where the songs are 8 minutes long. His are all 4 minutes and he only gets through 12 of them?
Don't get me wrong, he plays some of the deeper cuts, like it's cool Mister Superstar is on the sets and he's introduced back other songs over the years, like Coma White/Black, King Kill 33, Disassociative etc. But why do they stay on the printed setlist and not actually get played 90% of the time? Why does a song like This is the New Shit get played instead. And why does the band need to play sets with 3 covers every single time?

haha - burn! poor twig. But yeah I really suck on guitar and I can play IHA better
At this point I would be more hyped to see Daisy & Sara-Lee Lucas play the old spooks numbers, was just listening to some old spooks tapes and wow... the atmosphere is so great. Would also love a book of all the flyers and newsletters from that era, maybe with a potted history of the band at that time interspersed throughout... they were so good & their rise to fame is really one of the fairytale stories of rock.
Does anyone know if there was ever a pro shot spooks show? or anything approaching pro shot. I seem to remember watching an old VHS where manson was sitting on a chair and there was a lamp in the corner

It looks "awesome" in a drunk karaoke singalong way...
Manson actually seems energetic and seemed like he was having fun -- it just seems like a good, out or control experience, which is what people applaud early Manson shows for.
I saw Manson back when he put on a good show. This is not what it was like. The high energy and intensity was backed up by clear and determined effort. Here, he looks like he's about to start laughing from the ridiculousness of it all, while sort of mumbling into a microphone.

Isn't it the 20th Anniversary of POAAF. Why doesn't he play songs from this record?
Silly void! Don't you know Mazza's d'artiste extraordinnaire persona is above and too good for such fun social critique?
The humility, relatively speaking, and topical subject matter could do his live set wonders and restore some credibility to a waning greatest hits cock-rock schtick.
But alas, he must be embarrassed. And wrongly so.
But seriously. Here's what said aligned vitriol would sound like in 2014:

Not pretty. Gidget must be rolling in his grave.
It takes 1) a good singer and 2) a lust for life to perform those tracks -- two things he has pissed in the wind. Id rather he leave it be in the past and let people discover it themselves and make their own revelations along the lines of "holy shit! They were a great band!"

Going back to "Mister Superstar" being played live for a minute...
I was curious, so I googled it on youtube to see what I could find.
This performance from this summer came up, and boy oh boy is it ever hard to watch. At one point MM even sits down on the ground for close to 2 minutes in the middle of the song.
He literally looks like he can't go on anymore. He just starts mumbling the words in the tune of what they should be, but they're just random noises, then he just randomly abandons the song for the last minute and a half and laves the stage, leaving the crew members wondering where he is going . I generally feel bad for him.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfBPoEsDYZQ
Compare it to this version filmed in 1997. There is so much more energy on stage and he generally cares about delivering the song well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJ4hKmyttRY
And to round up our "mister Superstar" live trilogy of videos, here is a video taken from front row from Halloween night.
Pay especially close attention to the 4 minute mark when he starts doing summersaults on the stage!! WTF!
And the fans are all groping him and practically jumping on stage. There appears to be no barrier between him and the fans, which is odd for an act his size.
I wonder why he has no security for this show. Couldn't afford it?

Got home yesterday, was at all three. The new band lineup and arrangements are spot on, Tyler kills it. Even songs that weren't favorites of mine (mainly Skold tracks) sounded bigger than I've ever heard. I'm a huge Twiggy fan, he's why I picked up a guitar but I wouldn't mess with this lineup at all. It was amazing seeing MM in such a small venue, pure chaos on Halloween night. Here's a few vids from the last show, which was my favorite from a performance standpoint. The crowd wasn't nearly as rowdy though, and I was exhausted from a crazy week. Also, I was in the VIP area by the soundboard so the visual quality isn't great but audio turned out decent for my phone. I have more from each of the shows over at the Provider Module forums in the tour section.

I was up in the VIP area for The Roxy gigs (got to meet Billy Howerdel which was rad), which was mainly filled with friends, family and other musicians/celebrities - and even some of those people were filming although it really was mostly during the first song and the popular singles (Dope Show, Sweet Dreams, The Beautiful People). The first show at The Observatory didn't have as many at least from where I was. I almost was expecting a no filming sign given the small venues but they seemed cool. I mainly just grabbed the new songs since i knew where they were in the set, and Mr SS and then the Depp/Ninja jam on Halloween. There will always be a least one video until artists ban them outright, I was just trying to get something not pure shit and I don't bootleg as a hobby so phone was really the only option. I think Haz might have gotten something as well, but he definitely had the better gear with him ;)

Also, it's really refreshing to get a cover that's more than just his face again, in fact to have it blurred out is a nice change of pace. It's because some artists end up having leftover material from the sessions & can't figure out how to incorporate them into the main album, and don't just want to stick the songs as b-sides on a singles because they want more people to hear them.

Nice to see we won't have to wait until summer like the last few releases. I remember how long the wait for Born Villain was after we got the short film in August 2011 and didn't get the album until May 2012. The promotion for this one has so far been better too. A few live shows to introduce some new material, incorporating new music into Salem and John Wick so people who liked what they heard, but aren't necessarily fans to begin with, might pick up the album, potentially bringing in more fans and boosting sales. We also have an official release date, track list, and cover art two months prior to January, which leaves a healthy window for more promotion. Considering how shitty Eat Me, Drink Me, The High End of Low, and Born Villain were marketed, I'd say this one's already being handled in a much better way to make sure the public knows about it. All the tracks thus far seem promising, definitely picking this one up.

You know, '3rd Day' is the first Manson track I've heard in years that didn't make me depressed about what one of my former heros had become. It's not terribly innovative by any stretch, but the emotional honesty is there.
I can see a way out for Manson. An album full of songs about his struggles with addiction, codependency and relevancy would be such a relief to hear from him. I haven't said many nice things about him in years, but underneath it I'm still rooting for him.

I was eager to get started with my new camcorder but left it behind since I'd hoped to be in the pit for the first of these last three shows. That didn't happen so I was stuck using my older "pit-cam" from a bit further away than I'd have preferred, despite its lack of a decent zoom lens. Oh, well. It still has a BADASS mic so even though its dimly-lit and blurry/stabilized so-called "Hi-Def" isn't quite as sharp as what's already out there, I think the excellent audio goes a LONG way towards showing they were really kicking ass and having a blast with the new material.
I only JUST got home from my last minute month-long trip for those three shows but I've FINALLY started processing my footage.
First up, the first song of the first show!
It's definitely good footage, but there's MUCH better stuff forthcoming...including stuff from my new cam.

Most likely. After blatantly aping Bowie's influence for the Mechanical Animals era (still my favorite), it's only logical to try to keep dipping in to that well a bit. And like Magtig said, the tracks actually sound fairly promising. At the very least, MM can perhaps once again be a good studio band that at least bangs out some good, catchy tunes again. Since the live spectacle is gone (no energy, out of breath, waste of money/time) I'd be perfectly happy to at least be able to say 'Yeah, but the album is fuckin' good.'

They almost broke big in 91 after Head Like a Hole and Lollapalooza...TR could have cashed in by 1992 with PHM Part 2 if he wanted, but he chose to follow with Broken and no tour (brilliant moves) which kept the masses away.....TDS became huge in 94, he became one of the biggest "rock stars" in the world for that period and the poster boy for "industrial music" even though half his fans or the media at that point didnt know who Skinny Puppy even was.....then he went into a cave for 4 years and by the time Fragile came out, nu metal had taken over....Fragile (now regarded as a masterpiece by hardcore fans) basically came and went and barely got noticed in America or Europe and set a record at the time for the biggest drop off in sales from week 1 to week 2....The public opinion basically around that time was that TR was past his prime clinging to his past glory days (partly his fault for grouping himself in with clowns like Manson)...............Fragile to NIN is what Pornography has become to The Cure or Low for Bowie....at the time it wasnt understood by the masses, but now its regarded as the creative peak
I thought it would've been actually better to take my question to the Marilyn Manson thread. I really am just curious as well. Did you ever like Marilyn Manson at any point?
If you did, I'd guess that you might've at least liked his albums from Portrait of an American Family to Holy Wood. I'd definitely understand if you never were into Marilyn Manson at all though.
Oh, and as for The Pale Emperor, I'm definitely picking that one up as I'd like to hear his first album after hitting the big 20. I also feel like this is a nice step forward. I guess that it also helps to remind myself not to get too hyped up and psyched, but that's also just me with just about any band I follow. :p

All in good time!

Goddamnit. Look out everybody, Bill has found his way outside of the NIN-specific sections.
But seriously dude Manson is probably the easiest target to criticise, at least with Trent you've had to come up with some amazing truth-bending statements to even try to sound like you have valid criticisms, but with MM all you have to do is say "Has anyone heard The High End of Low?" or "Haha he's fat" or "Wow he's so childish with the way he behaves for a grown man" or "Everything since Mechanical Animals has been a disappointment," or if you really want to get your "everything past 1995 sucks" train going, "Ever since Daisy left it's been stale." He's super easy to complain about, very easy to criticise, and a fuckton of people would agree with you. I'm let down by your cynicism here, bill; you're picking the low-hanging fruit when you used to at least climb the ladder before toppling back down.
OT: I hate that I actually am feeling hopeful for the new album, but so far we've heard far more than we'd heard from BV before release, and everything's been fairly promising.

Well it is 9th grade shit, but then, I didn't feel like a dickhead listening to it when I was in 9th grade, whereas I feel a bit like a protracted adolescent listening to NIN when I'm nearly 30
but ultimately all rock music is silly nonsense, it's a bit daft to claim any of it is massively more worthy than anything else. 4 minutes of people ranting and raving about how not pleased they are, really we've all got better things to be doing

In high school, all the Manson fans used to think they were so "extreme" by listening to his music and how he was the "antichrist" or whatever.....I was listening to bands like Burzum, Deicide and Cannibal Corpse at the time, so it was always hilarious when some Manson fan would talk about how "evil" he was, when compared to those death/black metal bands, he was like Boyz II Men

i was a hardcore manson as well as mayhem/burzum fan when i was 13 (i still dont accept any post 1994 stuff as mayhem), the korn people were who i looked down on. although its true about his fans, people who in my opinion get/got it were in the minority. most just like the image. MM gigs are stuffed with the worst people, obviously just attracted to the obnoxious/antisocial aspect of the persona
at the end of the day... butrzum, mayhem and manson were all playtime satanist bands (what exactly was it burzum or mayhem believed? anyone? varg has cobbled together some odinist guff since he went away, but im talking before that), dissection, behemoth and akercocke are the real deal when it comes to proper occult lifers

But I was FREAKING OUT for a minute when the show started and I realized I couldn't see a goddamned thing through my flip-out viewfinder. At first I was all, "Well, it's a dark room, no biggie." Then I realized the curtain had dropped and I STILL couldn't see shit. "WTF, is this thing even turned on?" Yup. I finally upended it to see wtf was going on and realized some retard's costume-cape or w/e had gotten stuck to my wide-open lens during the sardine-can action leading up to the actual show. Passing the torch of being the mildly offensive visual spectacle that divides opinion
At the moment they are the most relevant shock rock act going... I know they're rave-rap or whatever on paper, but videos like theirs occupy the space in our culture that Manson's did about 15-20 years ago
Bear in mind Manson was happy to do the gesture in the video

It's interesting that you say that because I've also first heard of Marilyn Manson during the Mechanical Animals era, and I tend to listen to a lot more Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood more than usual during those seasons. It just sets up my mood for those albums.

I had a feeling that you wouldn't have liked The Golden Age of Grotesque. I also kept forgetting to bring this up, but I used to think that Eat Me, Drink Me was the stopping point for most former Marilyn Manson fans on ETS, but the more I looked into it, I think it was actually both The Golden Age of Grotesque and Eat Me, Drink Me, even though Eat Me, Drink Me still seems to be the biggest stopping point.
And not to say that there aren't any fans that had a stopping point before The Golden Age of Grotesque, but Portrait of an American Family to Holy Wood is often the safest best, even among people that might not be really into Marilyn Manson all that much.

Funny enough, I moved from D.C. to FL three years ago and no one I liked ever bothered to come to D.C., VA, or MD. Well, it's pretty straightforward. Florida's basically a dead-end cul-de-sac bands have to loop through then back out of, whereas anywhere else within the continental U.S. is a fairly simple connect-the-dots, circular pattern.
And I wouldn't sweat it, btw. This is merely the first leg of the new tour. They'll do these dates, a bunch of European festivals, and then hit everywhere else in the States next Summer once they've raised the money to REALLY blow the roof off the place and have it all worked out and laid down nice and tight.
Situation NORMAL.

I dropped off at Golden Age as well. Had a few friends who were still going Apeshit saying it was such a new and fresh era for him and I just wasn't interested in it. I just couldn't stand that era, and then it just got worse after that. He regained my interest for Born Villain though, I generally think that was his best effort since Holywood.
While on the topic of Holywood, it's funny because I use to hold that album so high on a pedestal, now trying to listen to it as a 30-something year old, I just can't get through it. "Coma Black" was the shit though getting you thru your teen years. But I try and listen to that album from beginning to end now and I just can't do it. I question what I ever saw in that album. I think it's because that was the first era I actually got to see him live, so I probably held that album so high because I was there for the much music meet and greet interview session for that album and then the show. When you're 17 years old, that shit means the world to you, lol.
I can still get through the majority of Mechanical Animals as an adult, but those last few songs (fundamentally loathsome, Last Day on Earth, Coma White) just don't strike a chord with me anymore, so I need to turn the album off before those songs come on. Don't get me wrong, those are fantastic songs, especially Coma White, but they're just too depressing for me to listen to now.

Although I will say I'm in the minority in that eat me drink me had me - I could really get on board with Manson/Skold doing this kind of jangly melancholy heavy-ish indie rock, the live show I saw on that tour was solid. I just figured well this is Manson mk.3 I guess

If you see a pigtailed Cub Scout running around then hit me up, it'd be cool to hang out in real life for a while.
:)
I could really get on board with Manson/Skold doing this kind of jangly melancholy heavy-ish indie rock, the live show I saw on that tour was solid.
I definitely enjoyed that album, tour, and overall sound too...particularly the almost "indie rock" sound of the production (relative to the more crisp, almost overproduced sound of previous outings, that is). In addition to everything else about that era, I really got a kick out of finally being able to put Manson tracks side-by-side with more indie rock sounding stuff on my mixtapes without it sounding too jarring. Like in between Hardvark and The Afghan Whigs, for instance.
Love it!

Update: Manson has denied any involvement in the video. According to an issued statement, “Marilyn Manson did not direct this, shoot it and he’s not even in it. This is not an upcoming Marilyn Manson video of any kind. It must be a fan video splicing up old Manson video footage with someone else’s Lana Del Rey footage.”

Nah, it was snippets of the song put to Shia Lebouf's tryhard art film with Manson. I didn't consider it anything other than a soundtrack for the film. The actual first single wasn't bad in my opinion, it was "No Reflection" if anyone cares to remember haha.

Eh, Ghosts deluxe was signed and numbered and had the blu ray audio, the two bonus tracks that weren't available elsewhere and the photobook. I'm stunned that this set doesn't at least come with a signature, and how is the fact that some of the ink smears a good thing? I'm all for cool deluxe releases but this just seems like it's being sold for more than it's worth, and not to mention that it's after a string of what most fans consider to be MM's worst albums it's hard enough already to justify preordering it, let alone something this expensive (and I'm being cautiously optimistic).

I only wish. Like I said, I've never gotten the chance to see him. I almost saw him on the Mayhem Fest tour he did with Slayer, but I ended up not being able to go. I was very upset, to say the least. Everyone I know who went said he sounded like absolute shit, and that may be true, but I still really wanted to be there.
I just wish I could go back and see him with his "classic" (though not original) lineup of Twiggy, Pogo, John 5 and Ginger. Although I did get to see Twiggy (Jeordie) with NIN in 2005 and John 5 with Rob Zombie in 2010 or 11, which definitely did not suck :D

And, yeahhhh...sorry, I was kinda multitasking (read: DRUNKPOSTING, lol) so I obviously totally misread the whole "never saw him" part of your post. Whoopsie! That said, I also missed that whole "Location: Virginia" thing. Bah!
However.
The Virginia show of the Mayhem '09 dates just so happened to be the last show I could make it to on that tour. So I stopped filming at a distance, got ready to fight and sweat my balls off, then rail-hopped into the pit and ate my last couple hits of acid just for the fuck of it. You only live ONCE, right? That said, I kept running audio so THAT'S crystal-clear and BADASS! But I ran out of tape like an idiot and it cuts off RIGHT before the last song so I've never bothered posting it, sadly.

Haha, glad to hear you like it! If you listen closely at the end of "Cruci-Fiction in Space" you can hear a security guy sneak up on me from behind to ask, "Do you have a pass for that?" Meaning my camcorder, of course.
I actually did happen to have a VIP pass but I knew it didn't allow me to film. Hoping HE didn't know that, I gave it a shot and he looked it over, nodded his head, and walked away, w00t! A couple minutes later I could see him heading back into area to find me and shut me down for good, so I nudged through the crowd to try and find a less conspicuous spot I could hopefully film better from...but no dice. With The venue's tiered-and-railed-off GA floor subdivisions all COMPLETELY packed by the sold out crowd it was basically impossible.
Plus, my gear was really taking a beating so I eventually just put the camcorder away but kept it running with the mic out so I could still get good audio, at least. I figured audio of the whole show with a few songs worth of half-decent video was better than having my whole tape confiscated or breaking my camcorder, so I rolled with it and decided discretion was the better part of valor.
So I've got this then one more video to upload later and everything after that is audio-only.
Can't win 'em all, right?

I'd still use just about anything else other than an iPhone for concert recording...but it IS bitter consolation these days to at least know whoever's blocking my shot with their cellphone is probably getting something worthwhile, at least. And I certainly don't mind the cover everyone affords me with all their viewscreens waving around and obscuring mine, lol.
But, yeah...security was looking for me at this point and I'd already moved to just about the only other place I could possibly film from, but it was still so tight that everyone kept accidentally punching my camera while pumping their fists or straight-up headbanging right into it and the fucked-up footage I was getting wasn't really worth the risk of breaking the camera or losing the full-show audio.
So here's the last song I shot any footage of before giving up on filming for the night.
Sorry! I did what I could.

Some of the lyrics feel a little clunky/like a real mouthful, but I like it a lot. Big step up from Hey Cruel World as an opening track.

Yeah, everything I initially posted was like 95% correct (and drunkenly transcribed within an hour of the event, lol), but BIG UPS to Charles2012 and The Overman at Provider Module for helping to nail down a couple VERY important words!

OMG Deep Six is SO FUCKING GOOD. The last "single" thats been this solid was probably Fight Song IMO.

Finished listening to the album. I think I'm gonna like it more than BV. Most solid MM album since TGAOG.
No way I'm going to buy the $180 deluxe edition, but I'm definitely going to pre-order the deluxe edition.

Don't settle for shitquality bitrates.

it's not bad. even at 192, the quality is better than I thought it would be. Unfortunately, while it's not a terrible album, only "Deep Six" really stood out to me as anything somewhat memorable. It's a decent enough follow-up to Born Villain. while I don't think it's moving forward, it doesn't feel like a step backwards either, so, i'll say I more or less enjoyed it. Average album on the whole though. Also, it's cohesive, so it has that in it's favor.

I really want to like this, but I just don't. If nothing else the vocals are way too high in the mix, the guitars are buried, and the drums are boring as fuck. I'll always give new MM a try, but at this point I don't really expect to be happy about it.

so, who thinks these bonus tracks are labeled incorrectly?
Demogorgon
12-15-2014, 11:10 AM
the bonus tracks seem correct to me. They are acoustic versions of tracks from the album with alternative names.

Tracks 11 and 13 names and order are swapped incorrectly. Track 11 is really track 13 and vice versa.

I was the same way about Third Day of Blah Blah Blah. Then it grew on me, musically if only that alone.
It seems like he pulled his head out of his ass for this album finally. Looks like it's going to be top notch and a worthy effort.

So, the same day that Deep Six is released, the album is leaked online. Interesting...
Onto the album in general, I find that it's the strongest record since Holy Wood. It really is fantastic.

I actually agree...entirely. I even liked EMDM.
Odds of Even is the best song I've heard since Holy Wood.

Not if it doesn't suck. I've been heavily on the fence of pre-ordering it, if I actually enjoy this I'll go ahead and grab the vinyl. If it hadn't leaked I'd've waited for it to be on YouTube after release anyway, and I definitely don't think I'm alone in the camp of fans who are incredibly hesistant about throwing money at anything of his anymore. I loved Third Day and like Deep Six quite a bit so I'm definitely excited to hear this, but then again I thought No Reflection was a return to form and then it ended up on an album with things like Disengaged, so I'm just being smart about it more than anything.

I had a nice, long taxi ride today, an hour there and back, and fortunately this leaked just in time for me to load it up.
Thoughts after two thorough listens staring at the sky:
I don't even know where to start with this thing save to say it's fucking good. Great even. This is an album that deserves a dedicated listen, because there's a lot going on here; at times I can't believe I'm listening at 192 kbps. I'm no audio expert, but it's got some sonic depth, I'd say. Best thing about it overall, for me, is that it pulls influences from unexpected places.
-There are times when I feel like he's channeling Bowie, Blur, Waters-Era Pink Floyd. It's making me go "did I just hear that on a Manson album?" I haven't done that in a long time. It's a very groovy, danceable, toe-tapper of a record.
-It doesn't feel derivative, or like I'm ever listening to the same track twice. Hell, it feels like a consistent, solid effort, a record with its own identity that draws very well on what he's done in the past. There's one track that could plausibly have come straight from the Antichrist era. Not kidding.
-Those acoustic bonus tracks are as good as their album equivalents, maybe better. Need more listens. At this point I want nothing more than for Manson and Twiggy to just pull a Cure and do a greatest hits acoustic album, because if it could sound like those, holy shit.
-All that said, it isn't perfect. There are problems. The man's voice is shot, and that was to his detriment on past albums. There's a lot of yelling going on in a few tracks, his voice is pretty up front in the mix, and I really wish he'd show a bit of restraint as sometimes it really shows. But there are other times where he almost wields that broken voice like a good weapon, where it meshes well with what's around it.
-I do wonder if one, maaaaybe two tracks were necessary. But not because they're necessarily bad (though caveat; I'd be very surprised if every track will be for everybody), more like in that Holy Wood way where there was some stuff where, while solid, could have been better left off the album to result in a more focused effort.
Almost two years ago I said this:
I don’t want or expect the guy to try and shock anyone anymore. He tries to do that these days and writes cringe worthy lyrics (pretty as a Swastika comes to mind). I just want him to stop trying to be a rockstar for the sake of being a rockstar, stop fucking drinking, and sort himself out. Twiggy’s not going to hold him up forever. Maybe he'd be able to think properly again if his brain's not drowned under a flood of absinthe. I don’t ever expect another ACSS; I just want good tunes. If his next effort's as much of an improvement over BV as BV was over the last two - which still wouldn't touch his old tryptich - I'd be more than happy.
This. This part in bold is exactly how I feel about this album, but then some. He finally woke up. I can't speak for the lyrics much as I haven't really digested them, but very little made me wince that I could hear. Not only that, but there doesn't seem to be a song on this album about being lovesick, or fawning over someone who hurt him, or about what's wrong with America or god. Moreover, from what I can gauge, it sounds like he's reflecting on himself and his past, his career, asking himself where he's been, examining his highs and lows, and what he's accomplished.
I thought of this stupid metaphor on the way back: If Born Villain was the equivalent of a sleeping dragon opening his eyes, stretching and blowing a little smoke, The Pale Emperor is that dragon roaring and reminding us he's still got a very nasty set of teeth and fire. If he puts out albums of this caliber from here on out, sign me the fuck up.
Once there's better quality audio circulating, I repeat: give this a dedicated listen, don't just do shit and have it on as background noise. It deserves both ears. I can see where the faith came from to announce such a stupidly-priced deluxe box edition.
