@destroyangels: We've added one last show to our April tour: Washington DC 4/30 at the @FillmoreSS. Presale 4/7 at noon EST, general on-sale 4/8.

Does anyone else think it's strange that this tour (Denver specifically) hasn't sold out twice over by now? I wasn't able to get presale tix, but I did get a pretty decent pair 20 minutes later. That same day after I got off work, I decided to check to see what was available and to my surprise, I was able to grab a pair in the 5th row! I looked again today and there are still some great tickets left. So what gives? Did the NIN announcement hurt sales or are people just genuinely lackadaisical about the whole HTDA tour? I really don't get it seeing as Chicago and NY sold out with the quickness. The argument that Denver is a small market doesn't cut it either, with Boston and CA shows still with availability. I don't get it. Any ideas???

Don't underestimate how much Toronto's crowd hates the venue.

Add in the fact that Toronto usually pulls from all over Southern Ontario and Upstate New York and the show is on a Thursday, AND that the band hasn't even released the album officially yet.... and I can see why it hasn't sold out.

Also, Sound Academy's capacity is ~3,000... thus making it relatively larger then say the Apollo (1,500) or The Vic (1,400).

Rob:
"So far it hasn't changed much, but doing the live shows is going to make it quite a bit different. I'll be running visuals live from the stage - having never done that before, I'll have to let you know after the first show how it is being a stage performer. I think it's going to be a blast though. Regarding the visual presentation of the live performances, this will be very different from NIN shows, but an extremely visual experience. We're thrilled to be working with Roy Bennett and Moment Factory again..."

It was close for me. Refreshed the page at 12:00, saw the pre-sale change, got to the page where I selected # of tickets and pressed "Buy", and then it said I had nothing in my cart. Went back to tour.howtodestroyangels.com and it already said "Sold Out". Went through this process several more times until it finally said tickets were available through Ticketmaster and LiveNation, so I fired up both of those links and got into the checkout process where I had 9:30 remaining to purchase. At this point, went back to the tour page and refreshed again in one last bout of desperation and I was able to get through the checkout process and got an order confirmation number, then cancelled the TM/LN carts. Thank God!

For any Toronto concert-goer, the Sound Academy has been the kiss of death for some time now. Book anywhere but there is pretty much the motto. I will say that they have done some renovations and made some improvements (it used to be MUCH worse, if you can believe that). Problem is, they either have by far the cheapest contracts and/or the best booking agent in the world, as they basically get all of the best non arena shows in the city now. As a result I'm forced to go there much more than I would like, and it's a shame too because in the summer it's an awesome view of the city and nice to be down by the water. They also have ideal smoking conditions for a toker like myself. A few bands have managed to surpass the acoustic issues since they've opened it up a bit more, TV on the Radio being one of them. I've also seen pretty decent shows from Queens and Them Crooked Vultures there, as well as Deftones, M83, and Alexisonfire.

At the end of the day, of course I would have preferred the highly underrated and vastly underused Kool Haus, and this is far from ideal but it's manageable. Just don't expect to be able to move around much, don't drink or use the bathroom (no soap no hope you touch your dick you wash your hands! if you've ever taken a piss there you will get that joke), don't expect to be able to go out to your car to dump any merch/poster (so fucking stupid), and expect for it to be filled with way more people than it can be expected to reasonably hold for that kind of venue, and you'll make it through just fine. Sometimes the hate for the building becomes larger than life, but it's really just another poorly thought out venue. I think if they didn't book SOO many shows and gave some other places a shot at some decent acts, their reputation wouldn't be nearly as bad. That, and if they sold a lot less tickets (or if you are seeing an act that won't sell out), as I've also been there when they cut the floor in half and it is a million fucking times better that way.
TL;DR Live Nation owns almost every decent Toronto venue for rock shows (except Danforth Music Hall, where I would vastly prefer to see Trent & His Angels play). @pequena (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=14) and I both work at Koerner Hall, which is more classical-oriented so it probably wouldn't be right for HTDA. Now, an all-acoustic TR solo show — that would be a different story.

AgentofChaos
03-14-2013, 05:15 PM
If LN owns Sound Academy and Kool Haus, why do they book Sound Adacemy every single fucking time when people obviously hate it and the acoustics are horrible? I can't see it being a numbers thing, they are both hold around 3k. There is some mysterious reason for this... one day I will get to the bottom of it.

botley
03-14-2013, 06:47 PM
LN does not own Sound Academy. There's your answer right there. All the non-LN bands are basically forced there (or the Danforth, which I vastly prefer).

AgentofChaos
03-15-2013, 09:35 AM
Yes, Pequena, Opera House would be awesome. Too bad it fits less than a thousand so it's off the radar for most bands. I think if it did even 1500 you might see it get utilzed more than it does. But of course then that would likely ruin the intimacy of it. I did see Saul Williams there though a while back and while I got into a bit of a tiff with the venue staff, the show itself was still very solid. My favorite all time show there was the Deftones secret show prior to Wakestock with Alexisonfire opening. Fuck that was incredible.

Speaking of Deftones, Botley that is good to know about SA not being owned by live nation, but I don't think Kool Haus is either. Do you know if it is? Deftones they played there a couple weeks ago, and I don't believe Deftones are signed to any LN deal.

Just took a look at Ticketmaster on a lark while I was looking for something else and noticed that now several seats in row C in the lower mezzanine for the Apollo show had become available. Managed to get 2 seats which are better than the previous 2 I had (need to figure out whether to sell those now or find other friends to take along) so just wanted to let people know that about a dozen not bad seats are currently available on Ticketmaster.

AgentofChaos
03-16-2013, 09:27 AM
Ok nevermind Botley Deftones are definitely signed with Live Nation, at least in Canada. My tickets shipped late and got held at customs for that March 1st show, so I had to do will call and they didn't issue actual tickets when I got there, just little tear one drink generic tickets for entry. Then, I come home from work yesterday, and low and behold what has arrived a good 3 weeks after the show? My Deftones tickets, printed on Live Nation stock.

Mystery solved.

The words you are using are frightening me. What we must do is lossless capture with the numberous tool we have (tubemaster & replay media catcher). Don't do same errors they did with Faith No More return, sharing an analog dvd of a stream, producing triple lossy compression.

Is it just me or is the whole "concert spoilers" thing a bit pretentious_? I understand it for a concept show that has a plot (Alice Cooper, Roger Waters' The Wall, that kinda thing), but from what I've seen it's just ... really cool? Like, I'm not seeing anything that is so mind blowing that knowing in advance could diminish enjoyment, which is what a spoiler is after all, just really impressive live effects. Considering they're manipulated live from stage too, they won't even be the same every night - and for SURE won't be if they have a dynamic setlist.

It's funny...I didn't even think about IYLSE until the day before the first show - and it wasn't fueled by seeing it here; it was just a random thought. And in the little conversation going on inside me head, I thought "I bet they won't be playing that at the upcoming shows." I didn't really have a reason why. Maybe because it's not on an HTDA album, or maybe because it just doesn't feel like it would fit in well with the setlist anywhere. But my gut reaction was that we wouldn't hear it.

I'd certainly be interested in being wrong and hearing it eventually, but honestly, I could live without a live version.

Actually, any fees related to public performance of someone else's music are paid by the venue via ASCAP, not the band. Bands pay a cut on cover songs when they sell recordings, not when they do live performances. It all gets even weirder when you stage a theatrical performance or a dance centered around performed music, but we're already too far down the rabbit hole, and I'd like to turn back.

it's kind of weird...i really love that song, but i think it does not work live and in comparison to the rest of the songs being played...i don't know whether sounds too warm or too insipid. I think too late all gone would fill that spot in the set much better

maybe i'm just a fanboy but i thought the coachella set was utterly perfect, ice age included. i think it fits the whole vibe (the vibe i recieve anyway) lyrically. But i could see a bit of a climactic up-drum somewhere near the and, a la the latter-day SICNH. I'm just still giddy as a fucking school-girl (and i'm a 33 year old man, and a fairly dour one at that) that HTDA is finally really happening!

Instruments as played by How to destroy angels_:
Alessandro Cortini: Bass Guitar, Madrona Labs Soundplane Model A, Teenage Engineering OP-1, Elektron Octatrack, Nagra Tape Looper, Vocals
Atticus Ross: Livid CNTRL:R White Edition MIDI Controller, Vocals
Mariqueen Reznor: KORG KAOSS Pad, Tambourine, Lead Vocals
Trent Reznor: Epiphone Les Paul Custom Guitar, Nord Electro Keyboard, ??? Electronic Drum Kit, Tambourine, Vocals
Rob Sheridan: Livid CNTRL:R Black Edition MIDI Controller, IPad Mini running Lemur, Vocals
???: Ground Control Pedal Board
The band are all using Shure P10R wireless In-Ear monitors per this (http://instagram.com/p/YOxtFyKjXl/) Instagram photo by Alessandro.

Evidence:

This (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shelleproductions/8662343507/) is Alessandro's table setup for the tour. A Madrona Labs Soundplane Model A pictured, as that is the big wooden plane at the front of the table. I also know he is using Aalto software with it to trigger the Buchla sounds from it.
The big gray box to the side of the table is a Nagra looper (pictured here (http://instagram.com/p/XVjlIwqjX3/)) and above the Soundplane are an Elektron Octatrack and a Teenage Engineering OP-1 which are also pictured in this rehearsal photo (http://instagram.com/p/Xkj3ZxkKOR/) on instagram.
This (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shelleproductions/8659288563/) photo shows Trent clearly playing an Epiphone Les Paul custom guitar, with his Nord Electro keyboard and white tambourine beside him. He also has some form of electronic drum kit that is brought out for BBB but I have no photos of to correctly identify.
This (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shelleproductions/8660389234) photo shows Atticus' table. One box, a Livid CNTRL:R White Edition MIDI controller.
Here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shelleproductions/8659288793) is a photo of Alessandro's bass. I don't know the maker.
I think this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shelleproductions/8660389942/) is my best shot of the whole band in action. At least the clearest one from a gear perspective.
Unfortunately, this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shelleproductions/8659291535/) is about the best I've got from Q's station. The Making How to Destroy Angels clip confirms that Mariqueen is using a Korg Kaoss Pad on her station, plus the white tambourine and several vocal mics with effects on them.
Rob's station is a Livid CNTRL:R Black Edition MIDI control as pictured here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shelleproductions/8663441742/).

The Coachella preview clip has a shot of someone's Ground Control pedal board at :27 in. Someone is using that on stage as well.

My mind is blown by the fact they're using a Kinect to do some of the visuals. I am so jealous of you guys in the US :(
edit: Erik, do you think they didn't use the Swarmatron live because of a) the difficulty of using it b) it could get damaged?

Kinect I guess has the tech they need at a good price - but it's weird for TR/RS to even go NEAR a windows product :P
And I'd wager no swarmatron in case of damage (there's very few in existance after all), or because, as TR/Q and even Dewanatron themselves have said before, it's really, really hard to play - remember the teaser videos when they had to mark off where to play for each song? I bet they don't fancy having to try to figure out where to pull the thingy whilst twisting the thingy and pressing the thingy (technical terms) whilst surrounded by flashing lights in the darkness.

I'd also gather that the swarmatron, like the Buchla, probably not very portable.

Man, after seeing the two shows this past week, the album/EPs have taken on a new spirit for me. I actually enjoy the music more now that I have seen it performed live. "Keep It Together" however is still a track I skip every single time.....

Yeah, that's not a Les Paul. Pretty sure it's a Sheraton II. Also, Alessandro's bass is a Fender Precision.

According to his Twitter (https://twitter.com/blindoldfreak/status/323252614173179904), he's also using a very new TB-303 clone (http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2012/11/28/bass-bot-tt-303-analog-monophonic-synth-tb-303-clone/).

My post was probably a little vague. I wasn't saying that it's not an Epiphone, just that the model of the Epiphone is Sheraton II rather than Les Paul.

This is what @Erik (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=627) has said: "Doors at 7, DIIV on at 8. They usually end around 8:40. HTDA goes on at approximately 9. Their set is approximately 90 minutes."

No, but thought about it when I was planning everything a couple of months ago.
Montclair + NYC looked fine for me, looking at the distance and all the arrangements I needed to make in that case...

I definitely bought a signed poster with credit in San Francisco.

But I guess if some places don't take them, it would probably be better to just bring cash.

Doors are at 6 for the Boston show and the show is at 7.

http://www.houseofblues.com/tickets/eventdetail.php?eventid=79820

They turn HoB into a dance club at 10:30.

http://www.houseofblues.com/tickets/eventdetail.php?eventid=80660

So I would say DIIV at 7 and Htda at 8 or so...it should be done by 10 is my guess having been to Saturday shows there before.

I think merch is handled by the venue or at least by local contractors, so it will vary from location to location. For instance, the same guy who sold me a shirt at the Wave Goodbye NIN show at the Aragon also sold me a shirt at the Final Fantasy: Distant Worlds concert at the Rosemont Theater (both in Chicago). Cash is by far the safest and fastest method, so I generally hit up an ATM before going in anticipation.

Looks like I was (most likely) wrong about HTDA opening for NIN on the Fall arena tour. With a few different 2-day gaps and many 1-day gaps in the NIN tour schedule and considering HTDA is playing the same festivals as NIN, but on different days, is it crazy to think some more HTDA shows could be added during the NIN off days?

One suspects it's futile, but Songkick Detour is taking 'pledges' to try and get HTDA over to London for a show: https://detour.songkick.com/metro_areas/24426/artists/3328251/campaign
You put it what you'd pay, and how many tickets you'd buy, and they try and make it happen. It's worked for a few artists so far...
