2014 Update: http://teespring.com/ets_org_shirts - The design's the same, but now you can get the shirt in a variety of shirt types. The original American Apparel shirts are there, but there are also ladies' sizes, a tank top, and a dark gray "athletic" shirt, whatever that means. The initial push helped fund a move to a new server, and you can tell. When's the last time we had downtime? It costs a bit more now, but it's also twice as fast as when I first started tracking ping times & downtime. And I didn't even buy a new laptop!


If you've ever been interested in an Echoing the Sound tshirt, we've opened up pre-orders for a preliminary run of a simple shirts, and for prices that focus on value over profit. The cost of a shirt + domestic (US) shipping is just under $20, which ain't too bad. The money from this campaign is basically being sunk into the server - we just quadrupled the memory on the server in the hope that doing so will continue to alleviate the downtime issues (http://stats.pingdom.com/iimg9ogso0ft) we've been having here and there. If this is wildly successful, the leftover money can go into a new laptop other ets 'merch' options, at which point we'll bust out a poll or something. Anyway, enough jibba-jabba, on with the links!

For better or for worse, the way teespring is set up, I have to pick a single color and a shirt type (per 'campaign'), and campaign towards a goal. It's basically kickstarter for shirts. If either of these 'campaigns' are successful, I will look into doing a run of a more deluxe shirt type, whether that's a simple as a v-neck, or maybe an Echoing the Sound soccer team jersey, cuz it's hot outside and 'athletic material' sure is great for that.

If not enough people preorder, then no money changes hands. The campaign closes on July 10, because I think that's plenty of time for the word to get out.

Would be nice to deviate outside the black or white that seems to make up 90% of NIN shirts. On principal, pink would be a great way to stick it to that tired paradigm, but then I'd look like a 6ft 4 fairy. Purple, maybe? Just... please... colours.

As for the design, might be nice to try and combine art styles from various periods... something organic and frayed (TDS); broken up, soft focus or ultra-close (TF); smudgy (WT/Slip); glitchy (WT/YZ/everything post-08); maybe with scanlines and two or three high contrast colours (PHM). Or, you know, something a bit more specific...

I think if we go for a non-black shirt, we should still keep it neutral/earth tone. As much as I'd love to see a pit full of pink shirted dudes at a HTDA/NIN show, I feel like the shirts would only ever be worn at a show because of that. I vote a nice olive/army green if we're not going for black/white.
I also think a nice simplistic ETS logo, maybe something simple under it, sounds good.

I think it would be nice to have it read echoingthesound.org with a short mention on how it's an Internet forum about Nine Inch Nails, and other stuff as well. If possible, using the current front page for the T-shirt would be rather nice, but if not for the picture, the words alone would still do the T-shirt justice from the way I see it. *This is just me, but I'd be fine with it even if it just said: echoingthesound.org - A Nine Inch Nails (and other stuff) Forum.* And this would also give me another way to promote ETS to any other NIN fans I know of and/or might end up meeting in real life.

I also thought that green, or any shade of green might be nice considering how it's Trent's favorite color. Any shade of blue would also be nice as well. I thought about that when I was looking at the Quick Reply bar and the bars with the dates and post counts at the top of each post.

I was thinking about this again today, and yes, it's still on my list of things to do. Given that the NIN tour is coming up sooner than later, I'm going to absolutely post some designs this weekend for you to make with the voting on. I've been a little bit overloaded offline (well, it's still online if you consider I write ecommerce code for a living, I suppose) and forget to do stuff like take showers, let alone make ETS shirts. To be honest, $26 (£17) for a shirt is a really reasonable price. For comparison, NIN shirts are £25 at shows, and I'd consider £17 for a shirt here (H&M style basic tees and sweaters aside) quite good.

@heavenly_bearded (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=341) I prefer proper silkscreening to what I've received in the past from Cafepress (although @sheepdean (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=350) tells me their stuff is okay these days), but the challenge with silkscreening is you kind of have to know in advance how many shirts you want to make, in what sizes, and in what colors. I've danced that dance in the past, and gotten bitten by people who say they want a shirt and then don't follow up. This is a big reason why I've avoided doing NIN Hotline or ETS shirts over the years. Teespring helps alleviate some of that hassle, but unfortunately the matrix of selections you can make isn't as dynamic as you or I would like. You have to select a shirt type and a shirt color, and basically make a single style of shirt.

If either of these shirt runs are successful, I should have enough leftover money to look into working more directly with a printer to do something less... unified? Right now, the stats tell me ETS has about 900 'active members', and if 5% of those members buy shirts, I think I'll be pretty lucky. We just don't have the kind of bulk that would make it easier for me to offer wider selection without shifting to something like Cafepress, which is generally more expensive and not as high quality (as far as the printing goes).

Also, the cool girls NIN shirts only came into being around 2005/2006. And yeah, they're way cooler than the mens shirts of the era, no doubt. But prior to that? Hanes Beefy Tees for EVERYTHING.

Miss Baphomette asked for a black shirt, and despite wanting a black shirt, bought up the nice silvery ETS shirt. And even though I have too many black shirts, I'm a little bit sick of the NIN hotline shirt I made 13 years ago.

Recent font searching tools have gotten really good, and I've managed to chase down the actual font used for Broken-era stuff (as well as the actual font used for Closure, which didn't even have a good approximation in the fan font oeuvre), which I used to ape one of my favorite simple bumper stickers.

And then I thought, wouldn't it be nice to have a big graphic on the back? Like, from one of my favorite shirts, painstakingly traced as a vector graphic from a photo I took when I bought the very last shirt from the warehouse that Object was cleaning out.

After Olga pointed out that the symbol on the back bore a striking resemblance to (but was not in fact the same thing as) a symbol used by Russian neo-Nazis, I just... I couldn't unsee that. I wrote an explanation that I sent using the "Email people who preordered" link, but apparently that never went through. Awesome!

Doubly awesome? When I first canceled the campaign, it just shut the campaign down. Didn't refund anyone. Teespring's a little bit different from Kickstarter in that it charges everyone as soon as the campaign reaches the goal - I think Kickstarter waits until the campaign is over before it approves any funding. So I wait a few days to see if I get the $67 back, and nothing happens, so I email them - "Hey, I noticed I didn't get refunded." They're all "Oh, sorry, we'll refund you." I asked in reply, can you make sure that everyone was refunded? No reply. I wait a couple of days, and I still don't see a refund on my account. So today I sent a follow-up follow-up, and they write back "Everyone's refunded now!"

Five minutes later, Randazzo IMs me, "Hey I just got refunded by Teespring."

So yeah, this could have gone more smoothly. On the bright side, I've got a pretty badass new design that I'm excited to put up there, and I'm actually thinking of putting a second design up simultaneously so that there's an element of choice. I'll drop the campaign to 20 shirts each, which cuts into the profit a little bit, but I really wasn't going to come out with much cash in the end anyway. Really I just want NIN Hotline shirts.

If I say I'll get it online tonight, and get sidetracked by the fact that I didn't do laundry all weekend (for example) then I might not get it online tonight. I was also wondering if it was worth any additional graphics on the back, for example, but it's probably fine as-is. If it works for Alex of scotland, it works for me.

So, I swear I saw color options on another campaign, and as I type this, I think I actually get how that would have worked, but... too late for that now! What I did add though, were different shirt types as options. I didn't have to run a separate campaign for ladies' shirts, or athletic shirts, etc. Some of the options cost more than others, but the average came to about $15, so I just made them all $15.

I also like how gray reminds me of Something I Can Never Have and The Day The World Went Away and the ending of both Closure videos. I also liked the way that the black text looked against that shade of gray as well.

I've done some digging. Not an error, but a different measuring context.

American Apparel measurements are typical full measurement around chest, but Gildan appears to measure armhole to armhole across the front.

Same here. I was going to go the athletic black, not that I'm athletic by any means, but the sizing chart kinda turned me off. I don't want to look like a vacuum packed ETSer.

It's quite the pleasure knowing that I'll now have a little piece of ETS to wear whenever I'm around my local stores and restaurants. And should I ever meet any other Nine Inch Nails fans in real life, it would certainly make promoting ETS a lot more easier and natural for me. Then again, it could even just give me an extra excuse to promote ETS just by wearing it alone. It's also a nice physical and tangible reminder of ETS should I take any hiatuses from it, big or small from now on.

I've got some time off this week, I'll see what I can put together. TBH, I've been a little bit disappointed with the Teespring shirts. The ink doesn't last like I'd like it too - it's not so bad with bold text like the ETS shirts, but the other designs I've done have faded a lot over the years.

Anyhow, I'll see what I can come up with.

Do you wash your shirts, jeans, etc. inside-out each time? They tend to fade a lot less over time that way. I've worn the 2014 ETS shirt to the gym, jogging, hiking, etc. more times than I can count and the logo is still as crisp as the day it arrived..

I stopped regularly washing my jeans a year ago, partly because of the influence of the internet, and partly because drying out jeans is a pain in the ass. I have been more cognizant of turning my clothes inside out on their way into the dirty laundry basket, but I'm also the guy who threw out all his socks and bought all black socks because of the decreased level of effort in terms of sorting laundry. I also have almost no white clothes for this reason.

I've actually done that through Teespring in the past and the results have been pretty crappy. They screen a layer of white, and then a layer of blue, and when it comes to the finer details, it looks like hot garbage.

Alright, I did a thing (https://teespring.com/ets2017) in a bunch of colors. Then I did it again in women's apparel (https://teespring.com/ets-women). And then I semi-reluctantly did it in traditional white-on-black (https://teespring.com/ets-punk)

There are two dimensions of options on each page: first, you pick the brand of shirt. Then you pick the color. Different brands have different base costs, and that's reflected in the prices you see, which I tried to keep cheap, while leaving a little bit of extra to go into the hosting account (which, I swear TheBang I will set that Dreamhost link up this month, which should dramatically reduce hosting costs)

I'll do a more formal write-up soon, but the campaign is only ten days long. In a week and a half, this run is done. Get it now, or hope really hard that we do a re-run.
