Looks like we get some new Daft this year!!!!

(why didn't we have a thread for these guys already?)

Man that link is really misleading. Daft Punk confirmed nothing, some guy said that they re-signed, then another guy said new album in March. Considering this is like the 5th time a dates been set in 6 months, I'll enjoy this with the new My Bloody Valentine album when that comes out.

I have a feeling a new record probably won't be out sometime this spring, I'm thinking they may push it towards a summer release. Of course, this teaser could just be the first step in the announcement and perhaps they've got something ready to go for a May release date?

Guess we'll just have to see...

MBV releasing something soon was a way far-fetched than Daft Punk coming out with something new. So I wouldn't be surprised. Talk to me about Boards of Canada tho.

Dont really think Daft Punk have done anything OF WORTH since Discovery 12 years ago. I think its already been a good year for music and its just turned March!
I hope Daft Punk adapt to a more contemporary style and stop being all retro. Sorry but Human After All was appalling and one of the most annoying records i have ever heard. They recorded it all in two weeks for some reason....i find the whole robot thing really boring. Anyway there seems to be a lot of good sounds for Daft Punk to draw from in electronic sphere at the moment, knowing how good they were i still have hope this will be a good record. They were truly amazing in the 90s. But crikey its been a long time.

For me, Human After All is a bit below the one-two punch of Homework and Discovery, but I still enjoy it. The Prime Time Of Your Life is awesome, especially that devastating ending. Does it feel a bit rushed? Sure, but even rushed Daft Punk sounds good to these ears and these feet.

I guess it hasn't been *THAT* long if you count the Tron Legacy soundtrack, that stuff was maybe even better than some of the stuff on their last album.

Daft Punk is probably the only artist left on my "must see live before I die" list. Here's to hoping they do a full North American tour this fall or something to promote whatever release they have up their sleeve.

The guy third from the left is absolutely Nicolas Godin - bass player/songwriter extraordinaire from Air. Guy on the far right I would bet is from Phoenix, especially since Daft Punk made that crazy surprise appearance at their MSG show a while back.

Conclusion: French bands stick together.

I would love to find out later that members of Air and Phoenix played on the new Daft Punk album. That would be awesome.

New information!

http://pitchfork.com/news/49993-sony-registers-13-new-daft-punk-songs/

Fan site the Daft Club points to some pretty solid proof that Daft Punk's next full-length is on the way: Sony Music (which owns Columbia Records, who recently cemented a partnership with the duo) has registered 13 untitled tracks via PPL, the UK-based organization that licenses recorded music and distributes royalties. They range in length from 3:48 to 9:04. Check out the breakdowns of track lengths below.
As of yet, no specifics on the new Daft Punk album have been released, but collaborator Nile Rodgers maintains there's a new record coming this year.

Track 01 4:34
Track 02 5:21
Track 03 9:04
Track 04 3:48
Track 05 5:37
Track 06 5:53

Not a big fan of the title (sounds like what a Daft Punk cover...er...duo would call themselves), but I do dig the cover, and if the SNL ad sample is any indication, this is going to be one funky record.

Just saw a new television commercial - again on SNL (even though it's a repeat). Sounded like the same song from the previous TV spot, but a different section of that song. Same thing with the halves of the helmets coming together, except with the title in the corner and an iTunes pre-order heads-up at the end... I'm excited!!

Oh, and isn't this the first LP cover without the usual format, i.e. their logo front-and-center? Kinda cool!

(Also, I hope this album is less repetitious than Human After All)

Yeah FUNK is right! I realy dont like Pharrell but man that songs got this 70s disco funk vibe to it and the chorus is already stuck in my head.

This should be a good disc, i was real into them back in the day when i listened to The Chemical Vrothers and The Prodigy. Hadnt listened to them in years (basically since the "electronica" craze died out in the US around 99-00) and then the TRON Legacy score came out...

Speaking of TRON Legacy, thats one of my all time favorite film scores, right up there with Fight Club and GWTDT IMO.

All of it. I know a shit answer, but all of it. Including the TRON Legacy OST. Start at Homework.

SM Rollinger
04-13-2013, 12:54 PM
Make sure you grab all the tracks from TRON. There was a 2 disc limited edition and Disney being the money grabbing fucksticks they are, had 4 or 5 extra tracks depending on where you downloaded it from.

The tracks are: Encom (part 1 and 2), Round One, Father and Son (great track), Outlands, Part 2 (another good one), Castor (should have been on the normal version), Sea of Simulation, Sunrise Prelude and Reflections.

There are a couple other tracks floating around out there, ripped from the movies score and trailers. I cant stress how awesome of a slab of music this is. I resequenced all the tracks together chronologicaly following the movie, and i listen to it all the time. Great tunes to play Borderlands to :)

Rolling Stone (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/exclusive-daft-punk-reveal-secrets-of-new-album-20130413) has shared snippets of their upcoming profile on Daft Punk, which features an interview with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo about their upcoming album.

Here's what we've learned from the Rolling Stone piece:

Making the album: They started working on it in 2008. It was recorded in Paris, New York (at Electric Ladyland), and Los Angeles (at the old A&M studio). "There are songs on the album that traveled into five studios over two and a half years," Thomas said. There are drum machines on only two tracks. The electronics are played on a custom-built modular synthesizer, plus with a series of vintage vocoders. Thomas said, "We wanted to do what we used to do with machines and samplers, but with people."

Some track names: "Get Lucky" [ft. Pharrell and Nile Rodgers], "Contact" (the final track), "Lose Yourself to Dance" [ft. Pharrell]

They hired some of the best session musicians to play on the album: In addition to Nile Rodgers, session players on the record have been on albums by Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, and Herbie Hancock.

They're collaborating with Kanye: For a track on his next album.

More details about collaborators: Panda Bear, Julian Casablancas, and Giorgio Moroder will all contribute vocals to the album.

Don't expect them to hit the road too soon: They have no current plans to play the new stuff live. "We want to focus everything on the act and excitement of listening to the album. We don’t see a tour as an accessory to an album," said Thomas. When they do return for a tour, they'll play stuff both new and old.

Rolling Stone also revealed that both members of Daft Punk were in the VIP section at Coachella watching the new video as it aired.

This Friday?! Yes!

I've loved the "Collaborators" interviews - my favorite maybe being the Todd Edwards or Nile Rodgers one. I've grown so attached to the vocoder loop of "Get Lucky" that I was a little put off by Pharell's vocals when I first heard them in the SNL ad, but they're growing on me. The effort the Robots put into finding the best vocoder sound definitely shows: the layering and warmth of it just sounds flawless on that song. Everything you'd want a Daft Punk vocoder refrain to be.

When I first heard the short clip with the vocoded/unintelligable thing, I thought it was really interesting. Then Pharrell's singing screwed it up for me.
It sounds like disco to me... which is fine if you like disco. I don't know... all these people acting like they're doing something revolutionary and ground breaking, when it sounds to me like a throw back to Michael Jackson "off the wall" disco.

There's no denying how insanely catchy it is though. I've had it stuck in my head on repeat after just listening to it once. So... they're definitely doing something right.

Well, isn't this album supposed to be a throw-back of sorts to the disco/West Coast vibe? I mean, if you don't like it, you don't like it, but that's what I'm taking from all of this. Part of what all this promo (the Collaborators videos, in particular) for this album is doing for me is providing me with a medium to a whole other genre of music I've never really gotten around to trying out. It's getting me curious in the discos, the session players they're pulling from all over the place for this record. Even if the album turns out to be a total disappointment, which I highly doubt, I really like the places it's taking me in terms of exposing me to new things. (Well, new to me.)

Until we get more, I'm just gonna put "Get Lucky" on repeat 24/7.

It just feels so incredibly fun and refreshing to hear Get Lucky. I was familiar with Daft Punk but I never dived into their discography until recently and this was after I heard the clip from the SNL post. I never got the feeling from the interviews or "Get Lucky" that it was revolutionary or groundbreaking.. to me, it seems like they feel what they are making is amazing and being in that moment I guess adds to other peoples reactions on how amazing or great they think it may be. Shit, when I saw Daft Punk jamming with Pharell and Nile Rodgers.. it just made me so happy and the music just added to that.

I think I might be responding mainly to one of the collaborator clip videos (and a lot of the hype I've heard from people calling this revolutionary). The Todd Edwards one (video 2) really overdid it. The guy basically implies that they're doing something unheard-of by playing live instruments. He implies they're "going back to a time that nobody is focusing on" and that "the magic is live instrumentation, it's a lost artform." First off, disco house is a pretty big thing. They're not the only ones resurrecting disco. Secondly, live instrumentation is a lost artform? Even if he's specifically referring to live instrumentation in electronic dance music, that's just insane.

And then you scroll down and read the youtube comments, and it's like supreme worship. The hype is so fucking intense. I mean, even in that video, the guy says "It's kind of ironic, two androids are bringing soul back to music." Then you have some guy in the comments box quoting that and implying that the sentiment made him fucking cry.

It's disco with vocoders and robot outfits. And that's fun. The song is really catchy, and I hope the album is good. But holy shit.

just a tip then.. avoid the Pharrell one.. geeeeeeez.. He refers to them as The Robots all the time and I just want to puke.
That said, I'd let them do it, it's rare that an artist (or artists) come out and say "Yeah, we are trying to change music, screw you". Some people love that, people want to feel like something special is happening in their dull monochrome lives or whatever, and who are we to shit on that? That said.. it would have worked a lot better10-15 years ago without the bipolar cross-eyed love/hate machine that is the internet.

Daft Punk were mindblowing back in 96-97, check out live record Alive 1997.
Thier discography is relatively small. I like them but dont get why they got put on a pedestal, it must be the image and videos that connected with a people who dont really listen to dance music.
I have been DJing for years primarily house music so to my ears i dont really hear anything in their new material that i have not been hearing on a regular basis for past 10 years by people like Joey Negro, Tony Humphries, Byron Stingley etc.
Its weird most acts who sound like them are relatively big in Europe but underground in the States yet Daft Punk have become ultra heavyweight working in Hollywood and with people like Kanye West, Pharell and co.

I'm still surprised at how many people don't even know who Daft Punk are. And anymore, most people know "they did TRON" and that was it. Suddenly they're Daft Punk fans for life without ever having listened to their other material.

The tribute project, One More Time, was in town last weekend, and I REALLY wanted to go, but missed it for an employee party (got hammered and had a blast). It looked like a really sweet setup, and I hope I get another chance to see them, if not the actual Daft Punk.

Then you have some guy in the comments box quoting that and implying that the sentiment made him fucking cry.

It's disco with vocoders and robot outfits. And that's fun. The song is really catchy, and I hope the album is good. But holy shit.

I'm personally hyped because this isn't something I would've expected to come from Daft Punk. And like I said, it's kind of introducing me to a lot of music that I haven't given much of a chance (and that I'm falling in love with). I wouldn't say it's something new and revolutionary in the world of music, but it's definitely going to be a breath of fresh air, I think.

The YouTube comments are pretty insane, though, especially the ones on some of the "leaked" fake tracks and edits that are being put up. Sometimes I wish they'd just take away commenting on videos.

To me it sounds like getting a message from a friend you haven't heard from in a long time.
I'm 24 and Discovery was the first album I ever bought, so new Daft Punk makes me feel little again.
I don't like Pharrell either. He fits for the song, but I wish it wasn't him.
I like the song but, this isn't the direction I was expecting.
This one song sounds like Discovery Redux and I'm not looking for that.
I'd much rather hear them tap the veins of Homework and Human After All for the new stuff.
I would like the group that was my first favorite band to not continue on nostalgia alone.

The Reason Being

Uhhh..what?
I'd love an instrumental of this, but then It'd probably just sound like a Chic song then. I know it's a radio edit, but I hope there's more vocoder in the full version.

I miss the more techno sound of Homework. Some of the Tron songs had a bit more thump in them, but they were too short.

Oh wow, I'm in the complete opposite. Maybe it's a nostalgic thing but our family moved into our new house around 2001 and the first music video I saw in the new house was Daft Punk's "One More Time". The video was super interesting but the music was just incredibly moving and made me a fan when I was only 13 or 14 years old. The song still to this day gives me goosebumps and gets me choked up in a way. Again, maybe it's just all the nostalgia within the context of that song but aside from being one of my favorite Daft Punk tracks...it's also one of my favorite songs of all time.

Discovery is so great.

Uhhh..what?

Since when have lyrics been all that important to a Daft Punk song? One of my favorite songs is Digital Love, and I really like the lyrics on that song, but I'd be the first to admit that they're not at all groundbreaking.

Personally, I think Get Lucky works as a single. It gives you a taste of the retro vibe that the album is going for. I wouldn't be surprised if there were better songs on the album, but Get Lucky serves it's purpose. It's not meant to change the world (no matter what the Collaborators videos say). It's meant to be a funky little song to groove to, and in that regard I think it works.

I miss the more techno sound of Homework.

Homework is one of my favorite albums, but I don't see them making another album like that. I felt like they somewhat tried to do that with Human After All, and while I do enjoy that album, it doesn't feel as genuine as Homework and Discovery. (Yes, I tried to avoid using the word "robotic" in that last sentence.) Just from the single and the enthusiasm that seems to have been generated, I feel like they're more passionate about this album than the last one. I don't think they would have thrown out all the work they did had they not thought that there was a better album to be made.

Contact and Motherboard are the two best tracks on the album in my opinion followed by Get Lucky and Giorgio By Moroder. The rest is so disappointing. I really hope it ages better with time, kind of like Human After All.

Touch feels out of place with the rest of the album.

I was listening to Herbie Hancock yesterday, parts of this could fit right in.

I believe Contact dates back almost a decade ago. That's why it's different.

It has some great moments, some really great moments, and a lot of stuff that annoys the hell out of me. Contact is great, Giorgio by Moroder is awesome, Get Lucky is undeniably catchy and well constructed (even if I don't personally care for it), Motherboard is pretty awesome in the beginning and holds on for the most part...

The low points on this album are a travesty, and I'm not even talking about the disco vibe that I just personally can't get behind. Does anyone actually like that Fragments of Time song?

ManBurning
05-14-2013, 01:08 AM
Wow, they followed up the Tron Legacy soundtrack up with that!?

Not my cup of tea at all. Since when did Daft Punk become a 70's disco band? Where did the hard electronic beats go??

Probably the most overly hyped releases of the last 5 years. So much build up for such a big let down.

EDIT:

Holy Fuckaroos! I wrote the above before I heard Contact... what a beast of a song!!!!

Fuck, why couldn't the entire album just be like Contact?
You said it richardp, you said it! If the whole album was like Contact and Giorgio By Moroder this would be one of the best releases in a loooong time.

BRoswell
05-14-2013, 01:33 AM
Contact and Giorgio By Moroder are actually my least favorite tracks on the album. Not that I don't dig them, but they don't have the staying power that something like Touch or Give Life Back To Music do for me.

And unless you had your head buried in the sand for the past year, I can't see why you would expect anything on this album to sound like, say, Rollin' & Scratchin' or Superheroes. It was never going to be that kind of album, and I think it's better off for not being that kind of album.

The only thing about Giorgio by Moroder I can't get behind is the the weird guy talking at the intro and midway into the song...

why is everyone labeling the album a let down? if it's a let down for you, ok. but don't speak in general. for me its the first album they did, that I like and for that I'm not labeling it a masterpiece or the entire discography of them a crap - cause i dont like none of it (beside Tron soundtrack).

if im honest, I dont really get all the hype behind the release. there are a lot of other bands that did more for music than daft punk. they didnt invent dance or electronic music ffs... ?!

i see it as a comeback and a really nice album which i'll be listening a lot during the summer - perfect music for summer, sea, sun, hanging outside and having fun. its positive and light. I love it for that.

maybe I like it because i dont really get all their previous album efforts... I love electronic music, but for me, their albums are just boring and a let down - for me, not generally. I see why people love it and i understand why they dont get RAM for that.

I did my first listen just after sex, wrapped with my boy, lying on the couch, windows open - the breeze of summer coming in, smoking a cig and having a gin tonic... and I can tell you that the music they made is perfect for that. the right mood, the right melody. they nailed it!

Its interesting to see all the critic and love for the album. It's like Shaking the habitual release all over again ;)

Well, I just spent the last 2 hours creating something I would like to call the Daft Punk Read Only Memory EP.
It consists of 8 tracks from the album, 2 of which I have edited for my personal listening pleasure. I am happy with the album now.

Looks a little something like this:

1. Give Life Back to Music - 4:29
2. Girogio by moroder (no vocal edit) - 6:53
3. Lucky Touch (mix of Touch and Get Lucky combined together) - 1:54
4. Instant Crush - 5:33
5. Within - 3:45
6. Beyond - 4:47
7. Motherboard - 5:40
8. Contact - 6:19

I think they made a pretty good LP. Its not smiler but who cares this shit will be fun as shit live. I will agree it is a little bit of a let down. oh well there so many artist better than daft punk in EDM. the closer is epic and I believe they should have gone that route ,and spent more time on it instead of a score. autechre destroys this album, in electronic music of 2013, but they don't wear robot suits. maybe auteche should go out like Squarepusher. We are talking about EDM, which daft punk is a popish EDM band. So its fair to compare two electronic albums of the same year. That is like saying I can't compare kanye west to someone like saul willaims or Nas.

7. The Game of Love

So, based on that track record, and given that everyone in the world is listening to this album right now, I thought it would be worthwhile staying up to date so I could also discuss it with my colleagues around the water cooler.

I finally listened to it today. I like it. It's not as good as the earlier albums and I had hoped it would have a lot of the electronic heaviness of the Tron soundtracks. Still, there's some good stuff. Plus, I like some of the disco elements with the album.

@DF118 (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=53) is kinda right though... This band typically only has a couple solid tracks per album around a bunch of junk.

Back in 1997, I saw the music video for Da Funk and instantly fell in love, got the album "Homework" for Christmas, and to my surprised, loved EVERYTHING on it.
So my introduction to Daft Punk was the very early, electronic, thumping bass and repetitive electronic beats. And i loved every minute of it.

However, as time went on, I guess I kinda grew out of them and moved onto other music. I never listened to "Human After All" or "Discovery" when they were released. I guess I was focusing on other things in the early 2000's, but these 2 releases slipped through the cracks for me.

Then I heard "Alive 2007" and once again fell in love with this band. I was a full fledged DP fan all over again, and lovin' it! I decided since I lived Alive 2007 so much, I should go get aquainted with their previous 2 albums. Boy oh boy was that ever a mistake...

They went into the trash faster than anything I had ever thrown away in the past. I was dumbfounded with what happened to this band. Everything I loved about them on their debut album was non-existant, minus a few tracks, as @DF118 (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=53) mentioned above, such as Harder/Better/Stronger/Faster, Robot Rock, Prime Time of your life, Aerodynamic ya know, the more popular electronic type stuff.

Since Homework, this band has been focused on making some AMAZING singles, but overall poor albums.

With that said, I stand by the songs I cut to make my 8 track EP as mentioned earlier on this page, and Instant Crush is actually getting better and better by the listen. With Contact, Giorgio (without the talking) and Give life back to music still being my top 3 of the album.

Despite their flawed previous 3 albums (minus a few tracks), I still love this band, and would LOVE to see them live. They're still better than alot of other acts out there these days. I think the thing that makes their live show (and live album) so much better, and why I was so "WOW'd" by Alive 2007, was they mix the best parts of all their songs together to make an EPIC tracklisting, by cutting the filler from the albums.

They know what they're doing, and i'm not the least bit worried for the next time they tour, i'll be there.

I feel like I'm one of the few in the Discovery camp. It's my favorite album of theirs, and the only one (not counting TRON Legacy) that doesn't have a single song on it I don't like. Homework was good, Human After All was good, but they were a lot more hit and miss for me, personally. Maybe the fact that I like Discovery so much is part of the reason I love Random Access Memories. It's not perfect, and a few things could be cut short or handled a little differently, but I think it's a worthy addition to their catalog, for sure.

I'm in that camp too. Not a big fan of Homework at all. Few great singles, and a lot of filler. Discovery on the other hand is fantastic. Alive 2007 was great too, but not big on Hman After All or Tron.. so yeah, the new one is much more the Discovery end of things. Which suits me just fine.

interview and interview, these guys just infuriate me with their narrow and ignorant viewpoint on current electronic music, especially music made on computers. i wish they would just shut up and stick to being silent robots...

http://www.nme.com/news/daft-punk/70387

"The music that's being done today has lost its magic and its poetry because it's rooted in everyday life and is highly technological."

What a load of crap... isn't the whole lyrical base of the new album rooted in today's culture? love, having fun, getting lucky? this statement of theirs is poetic.

"On one hand we're flattered [to influence new artists]. On the other hand we wish people could be influenced by our approach as much as our output. It's about breaking the rules and doing something different rather than taking some arrangements we did 10 years ago that have now become a formula."

So they regurgitate the formula of disco music from the 70's? 10 years is too soon, rip off something from 40 years ago instead. so original guys.

"Computers aren't really music instruments. And the only way to listen to it is on a computer as well. Human creativity is the ultimate interface. It's much more powerful than the mouse or the touch screen."

great according to you, computers aren't instruments and computer music is only listened to on computers... while you made a studio album made with live performers and instruments that you can only listen to in elevators or those little shitty speakers installed into the ceiling of your local shopping mall.

they obviously have no clue when it comes to current music, because there is plenty of music that has more soul than R.A.M. that was done on a computer. And they keep acting like they made such a groundbreaking and different album... maybe different for them but far from groundbreaking and simply regurgitates disco funk that was done better than they can do. their robot heads are so far up their robot asses, shit like this just makes me lose even more respect for em. be quiet, promote your album, and stop bashing other people's music that you obviously know nothing about. because, for me, I don't feel any soul from R.A.M. and it is all pretty much paint by numbers on that album.

i probably wouldn't hate on 'em as much if there wasn't this blitzkrieg of interviews with them stating the same crap bashing electronic music and music made by computers that they have no clue about. do they think electronic music is just about the Deadmau5ers, Skrillexes, and Knife Parties, etc.???

maybe they are just too full of themselves now and too old to hunt and find the good music out there... music made by computers by the way.

I really don't care what they think of current music or what they think the album represents. I mean, good on them if they think the album is a game changer, but it's kind of irrelevant to me. I like the album because I dig the sound of it and because it makes me feel good. I'm not really concerned about it changing music. That's for the critics and the uber-obsessed to think about. I get that there's a bit of a backlash at the moment against people who strictly use computers to create music, but I think it misses the point of what music is for. It's not about who uses what techniques. It's about how it makes you feel, and I feel like that gets lost in these discussions. Again, I'm really not that concerned with what they think, but I do think it's time for this backlash to end. Make music that makes people feel something, however you manage to do that.

At this point I'm sure anyone who considers themselves more than just a casual fan knows what they really look and sound like. There's pictures, video, radio interviews, etc. If you put yourself out there artistically, and you use your real name, and you don't make a habit of keeping up with the secret identity thing beyond photo shoots and performances, people are going to find out what you look like. I get that they want the focus on the music, but in this age, anonymity is very difficult to come by.

I'm not a big disco fan, but I *love* a disco beat (NIN's Discipline is a prime example). If I had to pick one track as the star, it'd definitely be Instant Crush with Julian Casablancas.

Jeez that was one dull remix. Reminded me of the kind of thing I'd knock together with a dual tape deck when I was a kid, using the old pause and record method. Was hoping for something a bit more edgy, rather than... that.

My friend showed me something the other day. In "Get Lucky," when they start using the vocoder and saying "We're up all night to get...we're up all night to get..." It sounds like they're saying "We wrestle Mexican...We wrestle Mexican..."

At least, it REALLY sounds like it does over our pool's speakers. Now when I hear it out there, it can't be unheard.

I love each and every one of their releases, especially Human After All, and I think that RAM is too good to be real. I mean it's not the same robot stuff they put out on Discovery or HAA, but it's still top notch when it comes to composition and performance. and even though Get Lucky is really good, it is the weakest track on RAM. and that's AWESOME.

Wasn't expecting to get so emotional over that video. Those last few minutes of "Touch" are some of my favorite moments in their entire catalog and that album/track in particular got me through a really weird career/life transitional period in 2013.

I always had a feeling Random Access Memories was going to be their swan song and looks like that's the case. What a classic album that I can't believe is a few years shy from being a decade old at this point. Going to have to revisit that and all their other albums this week.

I’ve been seeing speculation that the reason they may have stopped is due to Thomas Bangalter’s tinnitus.

Looking at his Wikipedia article it says that he’s “sufficiently recovered” from it - but I don’t really believe that’s possible.

It does seem odd that it’s come out of the blue like this, maybe it’s a legal/contractual thing?

Most of the chatter on the Coachella forums was about how it would probably just be 2 guys behind a DJ deck, no robot outfits or anything. There was something in the air that night, I don’t know how to explain it. Just a buzz, this energy before they came on. When the curtains dropped it was and always will be one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Just a flawless experience in every way, truly one of the greatest nights of my life. Hot take: kinda meh. And that's coming from a long time fan who caught them at Roseland Ballroom in 1997. While I DID enjoy the last stuff they did afaik (their work with The Weeknd's Starboy record), RAM was the exact opposite of what I wanted from Daft Punk. Get Lucky is a fun little pop song, but that overall record with it's strong disco worship (and NOT disco house, which is different, awesome and a sound they have played with really well) and live instrumentation is not the sound I enjoy from the boys. I love their French Touch sound, and I love what they did for house and electronic music. I don't care for them doing slow jams with the douche from the Strokes.

I assumed we were gonna get more mainstream nonsense like that record if they ever did stuff again. And being dormant for this long made me think they were basically done anyway. To not do ANY shows at all after releasing that monster of a record was telling. And then to go silent? Def. odd. They may come out of retirement and do shows again if the pocketbooks get light, but it's a safe bet that the publishing/licensing of their hits will keep them flush.

They were so ahead of the game on so many things. Two dorky French kids put this out in 1996:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yq-NFiEywo

Not everyone they mention is black or brown, but most of them were. To have the knowledge and guts to namecheck some of the pillars of house music there...respek.

I love RAM with all my heart. I do understand why it may turn away some fans because it was different and unexpected. But it sounds so close to my heart and in my personal music ranking it will forever be on the podium. I am currently at work and unable to check the exact name but there was a live performance where Dafts mixed their own songs together and what was created was a real masterpiece. Also, when I plug in my address, it lists the street name, followed by the house number, when it should be reversed. Think that will be a problem when they try to eventually deliver it??

they were not very prolific anyway, been dormant or about 7 years ,last album was in 2013 with no live shows or anything, so weird time to announce split?
they were amazing in the 1990s, Homework and Discovery are really really great records. Alive 1997 from their Homework tour is mindblowing i saw them in 2006, it was quite good, i never really liked anything they did after Discovery.
Human After All from 2005 was ghastly, sounded like really repetitive coarse demo and i never got into RAM because it sounded so different from who they were before, like a radically different group, nothing remotely similar to Homework or Discovery. too deliberately retro
i wish they had made more material though

Yeah, agree with the sentiment, I don't mind when a band tries something new, but RAM sounds...boring? I don't care for that slow disco sound. Homework and Discovery are most excellent. Too bad I never saw them live!

oh interesting...that wasn’t there when I placed my order. I wonder if they’re doing it now that they have a influx of orders coming in

Their streams have been up 500%, their song sales were up 1,335%, and their digital album sales shot up 2,650%. Also, prices for their albums on eBay and Discogs have gone through the roof. Good luck getting any of their albums for less than $100 right now. It's insane.

Unpopular opinion but their best music was from the TRON score.

I always wanted to see these guys live. After years and years of speculated festival slots and tours, I am sad I will never get to see them live. They were one of the bands left I never got to see.

Also, Homework was their best record. IMO (also an unpopular one) they went downhill with each new record they released. However, I agree with ninlive - their Tron score is legendary.

not unpopular at all with me, I think Homework > Discovery > Human After All > RAM. So maybe it’s good they called it quits?

The best thing to come out of Daft Punk's side work.

"Music Sounds Better with You" is the only song by French house (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_house) trio Stardust, released on 20 July 1998. Stardust comprised Thomas Bangalter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Bangalter) from Daft Punk (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daft_Punk), DJ Alan Braxe (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Braxe),[a] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_Sounds_Better_with_You#cite_note-note1-3) and vocalist Benjamin Diamond;[b] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_Sounds_Better_with_You#cite_note-note2-5) they disbanded after the release and resumed separate careers.
The single is a dance track built from a guitar riff sampled (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampling_(music)) from the 1981 Chaka Khan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaka_Khan) song "Fate (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fate_(Chaka_Khan_song))". It was initially released on Bangalter's label Roulé (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roul%C3%A9), followed by a wider release on Virgin Records (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Records), accompanied by a music video directed by Michel Gondry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Gondry). It was one of the year's bestselling singles in the United Kingdom, where it debuted at number two in August 1998 and maintained the position for two weeks. It also spent two weeks atop the US Billboard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_(magazine)) Dance Club Songs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dance_Club_Songs) chart.

According to Billboard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_(magazine)), Virgin offered Bangalter $3 million to produce a Stardust album.[6] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_Sounds_Better_with_You#cite_note-:1-9) The group recorded more demos, but decided to keep the Stardust project to a single song. Braxe said there were no plans to release the demos, saying: "I think it gives the record a certain magic and mystery."[5] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_Sounds_Better_with_You#cite_note-:0-8) Apart from their performance at Rex Club, Stardust performed only once, in a 30-minute set at the Borealis festival in Montpellier, France.[6 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_Sounds_Better_with_You#cite_note-:1-9)] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_Sounds_Better_with_You#cite_note-:1-9)

One of the best disco house tracks ever made.

Prices on Discogs have actually gone down to normal/sane levels (at least for RAM). I got a sealed M/M original US pressing (from 2013) for $40 ($45 shipped). Discogs is flooded with $45 copies ($51 shipped) of that album right now. Either someone found several boxes of sealed copies or the demand has died way down (maybe both?).

Awesomeness

edit: this might be better than the 07 lolla pro shot. Freaking kick ass set and I just love all the vintage Roland gear. Punishing the crowd with an 808 and not one but TWO 909!

I got the 4.5 gb capture of the livestream that doesn't have the drop outs, if anyone needs it it's already on my mega account just let me know

I definitely agree with what he said in the interview. As much as I love them and wanted more music from them, I can also see it being difficult to maintain that facade, both as an artist and as a person.
