It would be great to see if Trent could work on one or two songs for Splinter. When I watched the Dead Son (Rising) dvd, Gary mentioned he was ready to collaborate.

I was listening to Mad World by Tears for Fears... I could imagine Trent doing a cover of that. Its exactly what he should do. DO IT! DO IT NOW!

Another random thought....

Everytime Piggy from AATCHB plays on my iPhone I always need to change it to album play, I just love the flow into The Frail and then into The Wretched.

have you heard the Gary Jules version from Donnie Darko?

and to keep this on topic... I had a dream last night with a NIN ARG where i had to load 5 floppy disks into the same computer (at the same time in 5 separate external floppy drives), to get bits off of each disk and compile them into something?

I'd rather see a whole collaborative album, rather than just shunting Trent into an album that's already half finished

I just came back from the third NIN Tribute concert in Bucharest, the setlist had 18 songs (http://nin.ro/2011/12/04/setlist-3-12-11-–-nin-tribute-bucuresti-club-fabrica/) and the guys have 5 more tour dates.

You can see some recordings with them from the previous concerts here (http://nin.ro/2011/05/19/video-17-05-11-–-nin-tribute-bucuresti-wings-club/), here (http://nin.ro/2011/05/19/video-17-05-11-–-nin-tribute-bucuresti-wings-club-–-2/) and here (http://nin.ro/2011/02/13/nin-tribute-poze-si-clipuri-de-la-soundcheck-un-mic-review/).

Overall the show was great minus some 'hiccups' but frankly, I think it's okay, and I'm a pretty harsh guy when it comes to judging NIN stuff.

"Leona Lewis is set to cover the Nine Inch Nails' 1994 track 'Hurt' on her forthcoming EP.
Famously covered in 2002 by Johnny Cash, Lewis will feature the song on 'Hurt: The EP', which is set for release on December 9. "

Eh, I got angry at that point, facts went out the window. It was a metaphor anyway.
a) I think that's a matter of opinion. I like her voice, I listen to Flyleaf (I'm sad that they're a Christian band though)
b) 'Raped' is such a lovely way of describing something. Please don't do it again.

I actually love his sentiment about The Fragile right there. Trent's always had a bit of sarcasm with the despair in his music - it's not a new thing, but I'm only realizing recently because I've only been a fan from 2005 onward. LOL but the only hip-hop relevance could be Dr. Dre's input on "Even Deeper" and the rest of the less-rock band, more-beats-heavy songs.

I was on a real NIN kick last night. Hadn't listened to them in a while (not counting TGWTDT OST or the times they've shuffled on randomly) as I've been doing that thing where I listen to the same core bands over and over again. It was really good to give them a listen again—'Beside You in Time' in particular. Still a great band, even after avoiding them for so long.

I like the version of Sanctified on Purest Feeling more than the one that ended up on Pretty Hate Machine. Its more live sounding. IAlso Maybe Just Once is extremely underrated. Very much agreed with both of those. PF's Sanctified is so much more dynamic and interesting, I don't know what the hell John Fryer was thinking. It makes me wonder how an earlier Something I Can Never Have could have been, as that's another John Fryer co-production, and in my opinion resulted in a flat-out boring track.

I love Maybe Just Once, and I think it could have been a big hit in the '80s. May be a good thing that it didn't, though, as it could have resulted in a very different direction for NIN. If nothing else, the studio might have been even more controlling.

He has also been approached to direct his first movie, and is developing a 10-part HBO mini-series very loosely inspired by his 2007 album Year Zero, a dystopian protest record – although he's having problems finding the right screenwriter. "I chose not to write it myself because I don't know how to do that. But now I'm thinking I should have," he shrugs happily. "Somebody's got to do it, right? How hard can it be?"
Whoa, slow down there Tex. I know he's only kidding but GEEZE. What happened with Fight Club guy, who was previously announced as the series writer, I wonder?

Now I guess we know the directors' guild membership thing reported on the Hotline wasn't Year Zero-related after all. Who on earth wants a musician to direct a movie?? Sorry Bob Zombie fans.

Also, I had a dream my dad was a producer or promoter of some kind and he went out to dinner with Trent, MQ and the little one, and I got to meet them. THEN I HAD TO WAKE UP

i wonder if it had something to do with Billy Corgan doing the music.

Wasn't that precisely the reason or is that just speculation on the wiki?

Also man Trent looks weird without jet-black hair.

Very clever marketing companies with no care for film quality.

You know, I think TDS:The Musical would make an amazing film. And once when slightly stoned, I wrote like 3 pages to that lol. THAT I would pay to see!

i also once started writing a TDS movie. i called it "haloless: the story of a fallen angel"

does anyone have an archive of blog-posts, which trent posted years ago in the spiral blog? the blog which was only visible to the spiral members?
i'd love to see his "minor" updates. i think he posted when he leaked Closure to the pirate bay or also when mixing Year Zero was finished or things like that... would be fun to incorporate this info into ninwiki.

Nympholept had a lot of cool things, and I remember he had uploaded all of the Spiral-exclusive photos, but his old Mediafire folder is down (don't know whether he deleted it himself or if the host did). Bwary's site has the Spiral site archive, though: http://www.portraitofdecay.com/index2

I'm glad Bwary did that. I made a downloadable backup of all of the Spiral exclusive media that I released to the NIN news LiveJournal once the Spiral closed down. Unfortunately since Nymph and I didn't get along very well though, so I was blocked from the LJ soon after and all of my posts deleted. So, I don't have the backup anymore. Glad someone does.

thx guys!! i'll look through this and maybe work it into ninwiki @sheepdean: i sent you an email via ninwiki about ninwiki stuff i edited/added/removed. did you get it? if not: would be cool to talk about some stuff. right now i'm motivated to add stuff to the wiki @all: i have a question. what is the story behind the "a warm place" version featuring "henry rollins"? there is a spoken word version where basically henry rollins is speaking and as a background the "a warm place" instrumental is used. this new edit then is called "i know you". i'd like to know if this is some (un)official thing or what? here it's on youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=epRB03P1vvE?feature=player_embedded (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epRB03P1vvE?feature=player_embedded&)

btw: i also found the following page as a resource for trent's spiral blog: http://trent-reznor.narod.ru/the_spiral-tr_blog.html

maybe we should split the posts about nin.com-archival to a separate thread? i plan on doing some work on this. at least i want to reconstruct (minor) posts trent did over the years to tease the fans or to update us on some progress...

EDIT: okay, as of now i also have all posts of trent over at the spiral (2005/2006/2007). trent's update-outlet before that was nin.com/current/index.html (e.g.: http://web.archive.org/web/20040623000346/http://www.nin.com/current/index.html) which coveres his updates from 5th may 2004 on. so my main question is: what was his main news-outlet before that? i guess it was the so called nin.com/dboard or nin:access-board. it gets tricky here i guess :) does anyone have an archive of the messages trent posted on this board??

do you mean these from the 2004-2005 nin.com-access section (has nothing to do with the spiral)?
http://www.ninwiki.com/Access

or these, which are "responses from trent" from the spiral:
http://trent-reznor.narod.ru/tr_post-27_09_2006-03.html
http://trent-reznor.narod.ru/tr_post-27_09_2006-04.html
http://trent-reznor.narod.ru/tr_post-04_11_2006.html
http://trent-reznor.narod.ru/tr_post-22_03_2007.html

i found them by browsing trents forum posts from the spiral board here:
http://trent-reznor.narod.ru/the_spiral-forum.html

AND: as already pointed out above (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/threads/139-Random-NIN-Thoughts?p=12580#post12580) i'm really interested in something like an archive of messages by trent from the dboard, which was the pre-2004 nin.com-message board..

As mentioned above, all of The Spiral is archived. All media, trent's blog, rob's blog (click on friends in the nav to get to it), news, etc. I started archiving the forum posts for Trent and Rob. I have all the back up files, but never finished editing the html and stitching it together.
The Spiral can be seen here: http://www.portraitofdecay.com/www.nin-thespiral.com/ (leave the username / password fields blank and click the login button). So if you want to see how the blog looked, then go there.
For Trents blog on nin.com and for access covering 04 - 07, you can see true archives of it here http://www.portraitofdecay.com/nin.com/index2.html

I wanted to have a functional dboard archive, you can see what I was able to accomplish here: http://www.portraitofdecay.com/nin.com/index-f.html some other html files for dboard, have found other sites that quoted trent's posts, and I have some web graphics for the rooms, but it's not enough to rebuild it without additional info, files. I needed some good screen shots and wasn't very successful.

All of this and much more can be navigated to from my index pages, ya just have to click and dig around a bit.

And IIRC, there was an issue with others creating accounts to appear as Trent who posted bs. I never saw the board myself. I have a huge migraine right now, so I'm not going to search it out in the thousands of files I have. For the dboard, what I have reconstructed is: HTML files from the internet archive (and then recreated others using those as source model). There were a few graphics available on the internet archive, but was able to grab most of the missing ones from halo99 since I knew what to look for.

Me: Hello! I had heard conflicting reports about your involvement in HBO's upcoming miniseries "Year zero". I was only wondering if you were still attached? I am a huge fan of the screenplays you've done in the past! Sorry, if you "can't" answer my question I understand completely. While it's nice to have some news to that end, I feel like we won't see anything materialize until mid-2013. Then I thought, if my prediction ends up being true, it would be my first experience waiting five years for a new NIN album like some fans here have already had. (You know, except that the period between TDS and TF wasn't filled with an EP and LP from another band and two film scores clocking in at 4+ hours of material.) It feels weird to think that.

That period between TDS and TF was maddening. I think I bought just about every episode of Spin, Rolling Stone, Hit Parader, ANYTHING with a mere mention of Trent/NIN to try to get even the smallest morsel of info.

I love the Twitter age for this exact reason, as if there is any real info, we get it straight from TR himself. I don't know about anybody else, but I look forward to the (now) rare tweet from him with some info. Every time I fire up Twitter I get a bit excited that there will be some news.

It's definitely nice that we've had a decent amount of material in between the last NIN release. Doesn't quite seem like its been almost four years since The Slip.

I'm going to date myself here but whatever - my friends and I were freshmen in high school and I remember the day Rock 105.3 kept hinting that had a special present for listeners of industrial rock and to stay tuned in. Well, of course this was a day we had school so the bunch of us brought out portable cassette recorders and tried to hide headphone ear buds while in class. The moment one of us managed to hear the track we tried to record it. My cassette deck's batteries died before they player it, my other friend got caught with his rig and it was taken from him until the end of school, the gf at the time wasn't really into NIN but was still nice enough to try and capture it for us (ended up missing out on it since she didn't know what to listen for), and finally it took my other friend Mike with the largest rig out of us all (I'm surprised that he didn't get caught, it was a giant waterproof cassette player/recorder that was bright yellow) that managed to get a semi-decent recording of it. Needless to say that tape saw A LOT of attention from us until the Lost Highway OST came out.....

Also, I'm sure I'm really late on this, but do we all know that the Avengers trailer uses We're In This Together? I'm not sure whether I find it corny or endearing as Trent scream-sings "None of them can stop us now!" as Iron Man flies over a bunch of exploding cars. At least now it's indisputable that Trent Reznor and cinema are soul mates.

people who were around back in 97 - what was your reaction to the perfect drug?

Online, The Perfect Drug was a bit of a saga. It got leaked months early as a (really terrible) RealAudio file recorded off a broadcast from KROQ, and some dude started a website where he encouraged fans to download the leak and tell radio stations to play it. At one point he posted all the radio stations that had played the song - which proved to be a great sheet to look off when Nothing Records started sending out cease & desists. I believe there was an MTV news clip where Trent said that he would be "re-mixing" the track on account of the leak.

I was really taken by the track, and listened to my taped-off-the-computer copy over and over, even though the fidelity was terrible (audio compression artifacting on even the highest-quality 1997-era Realaudio was horrible). There was a ton of hype behind the release of the track, too. When it finally came out, some people said they preferred the sound of the leak, because it was heavier. In reality, the official release wasn't any different from the leak, except that the leak was compressed to shit. People speculated that the abrupt ending was some kind of punishment for the leak. I thought that was a silly idea, even at the time.

I was kind of disappointed in the remix single, but given that the previous singles had been Closer to God and Further Down the Spiral, I had unfairly high expectations. The video was a huge hit, the song got tons of airplay. The 3x12" promo LPs were semi-legendary at the time, given the extra remix on there (Even though it turned out to be kinda crap, once it did finally surface online). I remember realizing that the NIN remix incorporated audio elements of one of the tracks from the Quake soundtrack, but no one had really mentioned that online.

Oh, and the press release for TPD was hilarious. I have it somewhere, I remember it boasting effusively about inventing "industrial drum n' bass".

You can read a bit more from the time at this post about it from the news section of Rob Sheridan's Above the Trees fan site (http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/portishead/158/tpd.htm), but the stylesheets are fucked, so you'll have to view the source or turn off styling to read it.

Leviathant

If it was worth keeping, I would have kept it. I held on to the shitty 1993-era leak of Butch Vig's Last, right up until it the CD quality version was posted to remix.nin.com; You can simulate the rip by a) requesting TPD on KROQ (Does radio still do requests?), b) recording that to cassette tape, c) recording that with an early generation 16-bit Soundblaster, d) using a 1997-era Realmedia encoder set to nearly-highest settings.

Between the dynamic range compression from the radio, the added hiss and rolled off highs of the cassette tape recording, losing the low end from the bad A/D converters in the SB16, and the butchering of the audio by RealMedia, you'll wonder why you even bothered.

I've just sat through all the 'sin' remixes. I love the album version, but for some reason I've never listened to all the single mixes. Or perhaps I have and I blanked it, because I just did again and they're awFul. That is all.

yeah, they could definitely use more variation back then, same with Head like a hole
maybe that's why Reznor fled from TVT, disliked their quantity-over-quality approach

Speaking of remixes i was over at remix.nin and i thought it seriously needed a overhaul. design issues, review/scoring issues/login issues etc.. or at the very least have a damn stop button and not let it auto play every damn thing i look at.

Second thought of the day, I'm kinda regretting wearing my old fragile hoody when i did some painting/decorating..

Deep is the most underrated song in NIN's entire back catalogue. I actually think its one of NIN's top 5 song EVER. I never understood why people disliked it when it first came out back in 2001.
Prehaps maybe it was the Tomb Raider association? Or was it the video? I think the video is one of NIN'S best too!!! WTF? Its very eye-catching and colorful . I love the concept, video is about color. Green, Orange, Yellow! Its very camp, which is what i dont think people got. Its in your face. Big car crash, bank robbery, cheezy t.v reporter. Trent does not seem like he is taking himself too seriously. His acting is terrible, but its fun, i also really liked the female actress in the video too. *If it had had a tiny bit more cash injected into it, it would be other than Closer NIN best video.

But the song on the otherhand is fucking brilliant, its a pop song, plain and simple, its like if NIN went pop. Its the perfect way to introduce people to NIN. The beat is tremendous. I love the chorus, its dark, sexy and its just fun. Bit of light relief after the Fragile. But the best part of the song without a doubt one of the best 'moments' in NINs history is that guitar breakdown at 2.20 and that wah wah wahing metallic guitar which slashes through the beat. Phenomenal. Exhilarating and the video got it perfect.

Just dont understand how this song could be seen as below NINs expectations? Its brilliant and nothing ( Maybe Sunspots) on the more commercially accessible With Teeth came close to it.

The Reason Being
01-29-2012, 08:50 PM
^ Yeah I always liked Deep. I remember on the old ETS there was a thread about it and the general opinion was that it was a good track. If it was on The Fragile I would have been okay with it replacing The Wretched, or Starfuckers. Same for Love is Not Enough on With Teeth.

Anywho, I spent tonight watching And All That Could Have Been, Beside You in Time, & AVOTT (the Gift) dvd's in order, back to back. Now all I can think about is when the hell will they release all that stuff they're sitting on! It's gonna be amazing.

"Deep" is an okay song but its production didn't quite hit the sweet spot, like a few good motifs that were wrung out to the point of monotony. The live versions sounded great!

What a backwards, whiny twit. "Oh man, I went to the Slayer concert, but when I got down on the floor, all these people kept bumping into me! Have you people no decency?" In case he hasn't noticed, there are a bajillion photos of Robin Finck on the internet, in no small part because of the open camera policy at the last few tours. If anyone's going to pay for a photo of Robin Finck (they won't), they'd be better off licensing a photo from Rob Sheridan anyway, because he's got the best seat in the house when it comes to taking pictures of Nine Inch Nails.

To whine about losing some kind of royalty that will never emerge, out of someone posting your photo to tumblr complete with a link back to your page, is just plain petulant.

He embedded vimeo content on his blog, linking back to the creator of the content. I fail to see how that is any different from what happened on the finck fan page. Ugh!

I hate that sort of thing too, but I do think he maybe is beginning to understand what the hub-bub was about. He emailed me privately, and we engaged further. I laid out a few analogies, and pointed out that he had done a "30 days of music" series of blog posts where he was putting up music that he surely didn't ask permission for, and that the original artists surely were not getting paid for.

Maybe that point of view helped to counter his reactionary post, as now he's got this one (http://gtvone.com/2012/02/14/festival-images-perspective/) up. I hope that's not also just reactionary, but founded on newfound insight.

It was scrapped pre-production (unlike EDIETS, which was scrapped after principal shooting), so it doesn't exist. And it was to be made by the company who made Eminem's Mosh video, not necessarily the same person.
The reason for scrapping is that a) the original script and ideas were leaked, and b) Rob and Trent didn't like it very much.

Oh, and it wasn't the original video, it was to be a sister video to the one we have, and made afterwards.

Does copyright on the web mean anything anymore?Posted on February 13, 2012 (http://gtvone.com/2012/02/13/copyright-web-anymore/) by gtvone (http://gtvone.com/author/admin/)
I have a few images on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/people/visper/), I don’t post anything I care so much about anymore… Mostly Instagrams… (I still care about them, but not to the point where I’d invoice you for using one, yet) ….I don’t post them because mostly they’re just taken and used, regardless of my copyright, by people that don’t care for my rights / necessity to make some cash from my images.
http://www.fincktheworld.com – I’m looking at you.
Anyway, here’s a great example of why… I have Google alerts (http://www.google.com/alerts), I use a lot of them – and of the many times I’ve found one of my images being used without my permission online, Google has been the one to tell em in 90% of cases…
So, an alert pops up earlier today, it’s a link to a fan page for the guitarist, Robin Finck, (http://www.fincktheworld.com/post/17099275375/credit-gtvone) (Yes, i realise that adding a link is only giving them traffic, ahh well) ..from NiN… And sure enough, there’s a photo that I took, intact with my © and having been taken from Flickr (where the image is also listed as © me) and it has been placed on Tumblr for the world to enjoy – and, great, that’s what photos are for, right? And look, you have even given me credit – nice, I shall pop into Westpac and give them credit for my home loan, that will be fine for this month’s payment? Westpac? Is that OK?
http://gtvone.com/wp-content/uploads/gtvone-2012-02-13-at-13.58.14.jpg
It’s been reblogged 13 times (13 other people have posted it, only one giving me credit for the image) ….So, my first reaction is “Where do I send the invoice” …so I was mid way through that standard email with the standard legal notice – and I thought, hell, I’ve not done anything with this photo of Robin, I didn’t bother to send it to him (his people) and or Nin… I just Flickr’d it and moved on…. So, there is potential loss in the future – if he becomes superhuman etc… But right now, why would I invoice the Fansite £160 for basic, small web usage? Because I should? I should do a lot of things…
http://gtvone.com/wp-content/uploads/gtvone-2012-02-13-at-14.03.40-315x800.jpg
What annoyed me about this is the fact that in the FAQ on the site, they suggest the following;
“If any of the content posted on this blog is yours and you do not want it featured here, drop me a line at fincktheworld(at)gmail(dot)com and I will remove it.”
It’s not your content! it is copyrighted to someone else, yet you post my photo first and ask questions later? What made you think it was OK to do this, along with all the other content you don’t own? (Yes, I really would like an answer in the comments below)
There really is only one way to protect your intellectual property as a digital content creator – that is to keep it tucked away in hard drives where nobody will ever see it, right? Well, either that or hire yourself a lawyer.
I don’t want the photo removed, what the hell, it’s out there… but please, ask first (I’ve got a drive full of Robin…!)
Is Tumblr (http://www.fincktheworld.com/post/17099275375/credit-gtvone) a haven of copyright infringement? What would you have done in my case?

The same director blogged about it ("brewing up another storm" or somesuch) so it's likely he was going to direct. I think the video we have was originally going to be an online-only "viral" companion to the never-completed concept video that was supposedly targeted at MTV and the like.

Okay, I'm gonna drop a little mini-essay here. It's about segues between songs.

Much of Trent's pre-2007 work featured several segues, such as The Becoming / IDNWT, A Warm Place / Eraser, Only / Getting Smaller and almost every track in The Fragile. Segues are, for the most part, beautiful. I really love how the ending of The Way Is Out Through blends with Into the Void. However, if you hear each song individually, the halves of the segues (in the beginning or the ending of a track) can be annoying.

In 2007, Trent found a great workaround to this problem; I'll call it "extra-tight segue".

In other words, songs that connect into each other but can also be easily listened to individually without having those abrupt cut-offs.

Trent began tinkering with this technique in Year Zero. Meet Your Master and The Greater Good are basically two halves of one track. It would make sense to split them on the end of a beat, but at the very end of MYM, you hear the synths fading out. The track stands on its own this way. Same with the beginning of TGG. An interesting fact is that the songs don't have a segue in the vinyl version; the drum loop of MYM fades out and TGG is basically the same thing as the multitrack version and the Instrumental found in remix.nin.com and the Maxi single of Survivalism (four bars without drums, just synths).

It was in NiggyTardust that Trent perfected this. Listen to the transition between Sunday Bloody Sunday and Break. It is seamless, but the reverb tail of SBS in the beginning of Break is so subtle you barely notice it. Same with DNA / WTF!. The last synth note and drums of DNA are heard in the very beginning of WTF! and also serve as an intro to the song.

The transitions between the Ghosts tracks are amazing. After listening to the whole album for the first time, I would mostly listen to random songs for a couple of months. But listening to the whole album again after that felt so much different. Those subtle connections make the tracks flow as a single, coherent piece of music. Those super-tight segues exist in all of Trent's works since then, such as TSN's Pieces Form the Whole / Carbon Prevails and HTDA's BBB / The Believers.

Those super-tight segues exist in all of Trent's works since then, such as TSN's Pieces Form the Whole / Carbon Prevails and HTDA's BBB / The Believers.

great post and a really valid point. i'd like to add that the "extra-tight segue" follows directly from how TR and AR have be arranging songs since WT; the abrupt segues, rather than the gradual ones (such as "The Becoming" into "I Do Not Want This"), work so well because the actual songs begin and end rather abruptly quite often. where songs used to have some kinds of tails for the most part, even after abrupt endings ("The Fragile," "The Day the World Went Away," "IDNWT," etc.), they now sever completely. some of this comes from a serious reliance on continuous beats (like how the vast majority of songs on YZ have the same structure, with little variation, until the bridge), a feature that has come to define the NIN output post-2005 – though WT has a lot of it going on as well.

Fun little topic.

I'd just like to add how annoying it used to be to skip around the original Pretty Hate Machine CDs due to HORRIBLY-timed track breaks always getting it completely wrong, lol.

And I always thought the "negative number countdown" between "The Mark Has Been Made" and "Please" was particularly cool.

Yeah, I know it's not exactly the type of seque in question, being more of a remnant of a missing track removed from between the two rather than purely a blending of what came before and after...but still. Not knowing about "10 Miles High" one might easily think it was just an awesome little segue.

I know I did when I finally noticed the countdown there!

:D

sorry im sure this has been discussed, but can anyone shed any light on where the segue videos or audio came from between the music videos on closure? I know the elephant one is the Edison film. What about
the others, like the one before The Pefect Drug? ("What does this mean? To disassemble.")

Seeing as it was designed to be on your profile (back when we had apps on our profiles), it seems it's either been deleted by FB or its creator. And to be honest, nincatalog/nincollector is all you need to know that anyway.

The answer is, no, you don't have the whole thing unless you're crazy.

BBB / The Believers.

I loved your post, thanks for making me listen to those details again.

But, as you might have guessed, I don't agree with the ones I quoted there. Not entirely at least.
While I agree SBS and Break have some sort of transition, I still firmly believe that Break has one of the worst intros possible and that kills it for me.

As for BBB / The Believers, I really can't hear it. I doubt the EP was designed with segues in mind.

Yeah, you're right. They just have about the same tempo and are played in the same key, if I remember correctly. There's a wash of white noise at the end of BBB that kinda felt like a segue to me.

Not wanting to derail, but I think you're confused if you think Charles Manson's ever killed anyone.

Unless you mean his other namesake, Marilyn Monroe,'s suicide of course.

The entire premise behind the band member's names is first name of a model, last name of a killer (yes, I realize Manson himself didn't kill anyone, but he is in jail because of a murder that took place because of him). Though the only band members I can remember are Manson and Twiggy.

I have never ever been able to listen to Closer by Nine Inch Nails without thinking of the legendary Mark Romanek music video that accompanies it.

Is it possible to listen to that song without those images from that dark video going through ones brain? *Has anyone ever been successful?
Find it interesting millions of tracks without music videos my head is able to go to loads of places while listening to the song.
But *only with powerful music video's like Closer or anything by Chris Cunningham ...Come to Daddy and Windowlicker by Aphex Twin or Only You by Portishead and other MTV classics like Smells like Teen Spirit or Black Hole Sun my head instantly goes to a world that has already been created by someone else....
Just occured to me while listening to the Downward Spiral the other day....every other track my head goes to crazy places but with Closer its always THAT video....not blaming the video its a masterpiece and very effective... but when playing that song my head will not shift from a set place.... its weird.

Yeah, it's possible.

Was your first exposure to the song through its video? If not, how many listens in was that context applied? I couldn't even begin to tell you how many times I'd heard the track before the video was even released. TDS was in regular rotation on my walkman when it was released. Before the video (and single) came out, I distinctly remember thinking how it was such an intriguing song because it was so completely non-radio-friendly in lyrical content while at the same time being musically so. Never imagined it would ever work for radio, but we all know how that worked out.

This was the first music video by NIN i ever saw, when it first hit T.V and NIN became my favorite band so it holds significance, i guess.
Its impossible for me to interpret the song in different ways in my head. Which is a bit of a curse in a way.
Like i cant listen to the Downward Spiral without thinking of Charles Manson. First listen i thought Trent was speaking as Charles Manson the whole way through the record.
If he had not recorded it at the Manson/Tate house would it be the same record!! Could go on all day with these type of questions on how i would view art if it had been done differently.

Whenever I listen to The Fragile (the song) I picture myself sitting on the floor of my now ex-girlfriend's bedroom flipping through the lyrics book the day the album was released. She was going through a hard time and the lyrics were perfect for the situation.

I find it hard to get into music nowadays because I don't have situations anymore that relate to such strong emotions. I'm happily married, have a job I like, and am generally enjoying life. There just aren't any songs that talk about how awesome being even-keel and well-adjusted is because, in comparison to the emotional roller coaster that is adolescence, it's fuckin' boring :D
