I keep thinking Year Zero is 13 years ago, not 15

Also if we lockdown here again I might have to go on a serious deep dive of the album and ARG to occupy my time

Here's a bunch of them (https://yearzero.netninja.com/) someone collected years ago. It's not exactly the same experience but it'll sure bring some memories back.

I enjoy flipping through Exhibit 24 (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DTjQLPDl1gB_wUc6CGW-CFieDeBCU9_G/view?usp=sharing) more.

That said; do you think TR/AR go to the Academy Awards this year? 15 years ago they sorta predicted it wasn't going to be a great event to attend (Page 297).

Edit: vvv touche vvv my timeline was certainly off. Maybe they cranked it all out last cycle for a reason.

Do you have any plans for future projects in mind? I think there's some small chance we might accidentally tackle on the same thing, lol.

I've been to 20 shows, rail for the majority of them, and never gotten a pick/stick/stage goodie other than a setlist from a festival because the security guards were impressed I stayed up there all day just for them. Don't know if it's luck or what. I am however in a friend's will to get a LITS tour tambourine.

I got to thinking about that "Volume" technology that Lucasfilm uses for shooting The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett.

Imagine a NIN concert film of some kind being created in there, the kind of visuals they had when using Moment Factory's gear but now it's even more immersive and has more dimension.

The only way I can see the one you linked is by using that direct link. If I use search or browse the NIN discography on my desktop browser, desktop app, or iOS app, I can only bring up the one that has the correct track names.

Note that the one that has the correct track names says "© 2008 The Null Corporation" and the one with the weird track names says "© 2008 nin", which is wrong.

I have always felt slightly underwhelmed by Not the actual event's artwork. I love the idea of the ink/powder and each piece ending up unique, but the actual re-use of the still layout....maybe i missed something and maybe the vision was never fully realized with the change up on part 3, when the original conclusion was abandoned. But the whole nostalgic look back was just done on the previous album... What piece am i missing? Anything ever come of those weird journal websites that had line for line lyrics within? I love NTAE btw. Burning bright is the best post fragile song, in my opinion.

I REALLY hope we get more YZ.

It definitely still means something to Trent, what with the references in the AV physical component and the video for This Isn't the Place.

That was SUCH an amazing time to be an NIN fan, between the ARG, Year Zero, The Slip, LITS, Ghosts, Tardust, the "make your own remix" album, finding this board and having a lot of you guys scare the shit out of me but ALSO, seeing and interacting with a LOT of NIN fanatics for the first time, the megamixes made by...I can never remember the user name, but, those utterly incredible multi disc mixes, into Wave Goodbye, and all of it just rapid fire

I was 27-29 for all of that, and it REALLY felt like 92-95 all over again. I loved The Fragile of course, and dug With Teeth, but THAT time period that started with YZ, with all of the moving parts and creativity: it galvanized my fandom for the second time.
It was NIN Fever 2.0 in my life. It was like, holy shit, this band is firing on all cylinders, all over again, ultra creative, INSANELY vital, wildly prolific, deeply important, and utterly unpredictable, fifteen years after I discovered them.

It was SO much. And, holy hell, it was the midpoint of my fandom. 12, to 27, to 42 in a few weeks.

There was a girl up here, back then: I had a long distance relationship, and then I came up here for a bit, from dallas. I've got a LITS thing that I printed out, and a picture from Ghosts, with the birds, still hanging on the wall of this room.

I know it won't be the same as those years, but I REALLY hope we get new content from that universe. I hope we get a Year Zero sequel of some sort, and perhaps another groundbreaking show in terms of lights and effects. I'd love another politically charged vision of a near future dystopian hellscape

I always thought it would happen, that there would be some type of YZ sequel in '22, without a doubt. Now I'm not so sure. Now, we're kind of LIVING it already.
But I think there's a chance.
It would mean so damned much to me.

Just listened to NTAE in the car today with a fresh pair of ears after not listening to it for… a few years now. It’s strange, because the general sound of it and it’s themes sound completely different to me now, and certain words and expressions make more “sense” as time has gone by. For example I didn’t ever quite “get” Dear World, when it first came out, but now it just blows me away. Along with the whispered segments of The Idea of You, juxtaposing it with the louder, chaotic moments. It all feels and sounds so inspired, when at first it just came across to me as… weird and abstract, apart from Field On Fire (which most people can all agree is a sonic masterpiece). If and when this new tour happens, belting out The Idea of You as an opener into Not Anymore (love the “not anymore”/“but not anymore” lyrical motif that seems to appear on all three of the EP’s lyrics) would be fucking amazing to see happen.

The more I listen to it with a more mature pair of ears (out of the three EPs), this one just seems the most beautifully and chaotically put together; kind of telling you bits and pieces but just not enough to get a complete understanding of what’s going on, and that adds to its charm. The lyrics to Branches/Bones are particularly impressive and immersive when you haven’t had it on for a long time.

i really miss the mystery and intrigue of early nin.com. the fragile build up was so interesting. even better was that 2005-2007 when we got a new photo practically every day on tour. there was thread here on ets where everyone would race to be the first to post that day’s photo. the silence these days from reznor sucks for me personally. i miss him on social media. he doesn’t use nin.com to speak directly much anymore. the site use to change a tiny bit and we’d all get excited. his twitter account seems to be more about observation than participation. i get why he’s become elusive again but i don’t like it. I’m sure it’s better for him and really, he doesn’t have to cater to us anymore. the tour is selling out without even a peep from him.

I definitely miss Trent being more interactive with the fans. I became a fan during the Year Zero/Ghosts/Slip era, so I was very spoiled by all the attention and teases he gave us. That said, having a family and juggling two different music careers must take up a lot of his time, so I can see why he doesn't do that anymore. All the negative interactions he had to deal with probably didn't help either.

Did you guys notice that in the Cleveland promos NIN used font from Sin single and Ministry used the logo from Mind? Not sure about Nitzer Ebb. Is there a hint re: setlists?

That Nitzer Ebb stylization is from the 88/89 Belief era

Hey! I was at that show. I remember this one they played when they came back out for the encore and I thought to myself "Really? This one?" since it was in such heavy rotation on the With Teeth tour. Guess it was a rarity post-WT. I can't even recall if You Know What You Are? was played on the Lights in the Sky tour.

Here’s one I don’t think we’ve talked about much.

Listening to The Slip for the first time in a while, and the “how did I slip into—” part of 999,999 kinda sounds like TR is reading from a longer verse or piece of prose or something. Does anyone know anything more about it? Read anything?

In addition to this, has there ever been any more discussion via official sources about the album cover? Why the red line sort of glitches once it reaches the head on the cover?

https://www.nin.wiki/The_Slip

The stuff Rob mentions is very interesting in the artwork section (I think I added that there a while ago).

Also, did anyone from the camp ever mention why Letting You has the ARG flag? Was it a track originally intended for YZ?

I think Rob said something on Facebook about there being an obvious conceptual connection via the lyrics but it wasn't an outtake or anything like that.

Top 20 may be cool for someone like Nickelback or Nirvana (*crowd gasps), but since there are something like 200 unique songs played live, it'd be cool to get a top 50 view of this same data. First reactions:

Amazing to me that BMWAG was the #4 TDS track for the first ~88 TDS era shows. I wish I got to see one of them.

Any petty grievances about songs anyone has? For me, no matter how hard I try, I still struggle to hear the word “chipping” in Last.

Also, I like how on the album version of With Teeth (title track) Trent went with the (slightly altered line so it didn’t match the song title) of “the lines begin to blur”. But all live versions I’ve heard have him say “the line begins to blur”.

I still find it so… bizarre that Trent’s original demos for PHM back in 1988 were being used under the monicker Crown Of Thorns before the band name became Nine Inch Nails, then decades later Johnny Cash uses that exact term in his rendition of Hurt. Like, what are the odds of something that coincidental happening?

Man, revisiting Bad Witch and his Tobbaco and Danny Elfman collabs the other day reminded me how great the production is on all of those. I really hope we see more visceral, noisy, less "NIN rock" material from Trent on the next album.

More "Ahead of Ourselves" / "God Break Down the Door" ... less "Less Than" / "Shit Mirror" (though I love how the track ends)

I think back to what got me into Nine Inch Nails and it was because their music made you uncomfortable. I feel like ever since With Teeth (an album which I love by the way), a lot of his material never really had that sense of dread to it ... and hey, why should it if Trent doesn't want to do that? NIN is Trent and if Trent's not looking to make weirdo spooky music ... more power to him. If he wants to get pumped on stage and yell "HEY!", "COME ON!", "GO!" before every chorus / in between verses or have the crowd clap along to "MOTP", I'm always down for the ride.

But the more Trent collabs with people on music that pushes his sound, it gets me excited to think of an era of a new album of music that not only gives me goosebumps, but makes my skin crawl from feeling weird.

Sounds like a playback error/miscue to me; you can faintly hear Trent say "stop, stop!" underneath it — they likely rolled into that point on their backing tape, but really meant to play "Spaceboy" instead. Those aren't live drums, but the loop sampled from the album (which they used earlier that same year, when the song was played as an encore on "Further Down the Spiral" arena shows).

I don't think it was that weird for 1995 Bowie. Some of his own songs from Outside/Earthling era reach similar levels of anger and abrasiveness.

it’s true that this has been the recent situation but maybe not forever. Have to remember it’s been two straight years of pandemic that’s killed a million Americans. That changes things. Should we see a time where that isn’t the case we might see a more expansive tour announced. And they are also getting older as are their families and it’s understandable to not want to be gone all the time.

It's funny how Trent introduced Home at every show of WT club tour as "this is a new song", "here's something new", as if it was any newer than any of the other 6-7 WT songs they played each night, especially before the release date.

Yeah, though a tiny number of Americans had the 10" picture disc single of "THTF" (https://www.discogs.com/release/470884-Nine-Inch-Nails-The-Hand-That-Feeds-Home), given away at the advance promotional album listening parties, that had it included on the B-side.

And crackly MP3 rips of it that played at the wrong speed...

We’ve reached the point in their career where NIN is only playing mega money shows now.

Would you characterise the UK academy (club sized) shows like this? 15 years ago he’d be booking two nights runs at the same venues. Although ticket prices were half todays.

In this case, though, we’ve already seen 30 minutes or so of it already. That, coupled with the 2013 amateur footage that exists on YouTube creates a 3/4 done product anyway. So the remaining bits we haven’t seen might as well see the light of day by now, no?

Is it just me, or does TR not like to play much guitar at shows these days? On the With Teeth tour (at least the late 05/early 06 part, shown in BYIT), he played rhythm guitar on about half the songs, if not the slight majority. It was one of the ways that made the 2005-07 live band feel less like Trent's backing band and more like a rock band with Trent in it. On most subsequent tours (especially the most recent ones) he only plays guitar on a handful of songs, choosing instead to just sing about half the time and play some keyboards every now and then. It's noticeable with some songs ("Survivalism" when it was played the first few times on Performance 2007, "Only" with the 05-07 band, "Copy of a" at the 2013 festival shows, etc.) that were initially played with his guitar parts until the guitar parts were dropped later on.

This might cross over into "controversial opinions" a bit, but I prefer when TR uses an instrument (guitar/keyboard/bass/saxophone/etc.) for the majority of songs at a show, so he could blend in with the band a bit more and remind us that, yes, this guy does play the majority of the instruments in the studio.

I see your point, but I think it has more to do with changed setlists, rather than dropping guitar parts. NIN has eliminated completely, or now simply playing much less often many songs where TR used to play guitar, such as No You Don't, YKWYA?, Love Is Not Enough, The Collector, TLBTB (until yesterday), Echoplex (until yesterday), Heresy (until Atlanta, and I haven't seen yet if TR plays guitar again or not), Starfuckers (until its resurrection on the last tour), etc.

With Survivalism I think TR initially delegated his guitar part to Alessandro, who played it then until LITS tour. It's only since 2009 they dropped second guitar completely.

With Only i think it happened more out of necessity, as Trent needed to be free to play with the screen visual effects.

Copy of A - I think the current version that they play since 2017 is the best one, and blows away all 2013/14 versions (all 4 of them, or 5 if you count Grammys) away.

The list of songs where TR plays guitar as of 2018 tour it still huge. (HLAH, Terrible Lie, Wish, Gave Up, Physical, Suck, Eraser, Reptile, Burn, Dead Souls, TPD, TDTWWA, JLYI, Starfuckers, THTF, TLBTB, Echoplex, Shit Mirror, Find My Way, a few HTDA songs). It's just that they rotate setlist more than ever in their history.

On a related note, Robin switching from guitar to keyboard on 1,000,000 was a fucking crime.

Was informed by my music professor today that back in the heydey of a certain nameless dopey clown, many of the protestors who picketed said performances were, in fact, hired.

I wish I could say that I was remotely fucking surpised that more of that particular legacy was bullshit.

Things that sixteen year old me would have never believed.

And it makes me grateful that, despite all the readily apparent angsty rockstar imagery which was certainly designed to appeal to angsty kids- which we know TR was never fully on board with, mocking himself for looking like The Crow and whatnot - at least I know NIN's music came from, and still does come from, a good and honest place. I have the security of knowing some things aren't bullshit.

It's not to be taken for granted.

I remember a conversation I had back in high school where I had that exact argument. The other guy was adamant that NIN was all posturing, it was all fake anguish for gloomy bozos like myself, and although I was ready to admit that most bands were playing the doom card for show, I wouldn't budge on Reznor. There was no way to make that kind of music without feeling it in your bones, it was too visceral to be fake.

Now I could have been wrong, my argument was skewed and fundamentally flawed, but I'm actually proud that the guy I always backed up was sincere all along.

Apparently Henry Rollins and NIN were sharing a tour bus, Al came on looking for TR and Henry yelled something like "AHH NOO, no junkies on the bus!"

Embarrassing confession time: 15 years after it was first released, I seem to finally be able to "hear" the beat properly during the first verse of Survivalism. The very first time I heard that track, my brain latched onto those offbeat drums and heard them as if they were the downbeats instead. For awhile I'd thought that the first chorus intentionally starts by chopping off a bit of the previous bar -- not unheard-of in NIN-land. Not sure when exactly I realized I'd just been hearing it wrong, but it's been an awfully pesky meme to dislodge from my brain. I've had to very consciously ignore the vocals while listening, but I think I'm finally to the point where I've reset my reflexes on that one. Listening through the recordings of these 2022 shows has been the first time where it's felt at all second-nature. I still sort of feel like I've gotta concentrate a bit not to slip back into the old "habit," but it's a bit of a relief.

Now to wait for the Lifetime Movie folks to call...

Trent Reznor's voice seems to be such an integral part of the Nine Inch Nails sound. The tracks without his voice are also really good, but at the same time they seem to feel empty because he's not audible.

I've never really understood the mindset that something is missing in the instrumental tracks because Trent isn't singing on them. The implication always seems to be that they're flawed or Trent & Atticus didn't work as hard on them or that they're just filler material. I've always enjoyed instrumentals, but what I like about them on NIN albums is that they serve as contemplative moments on whatever journey Trent & Atticus are taking you on. They prepare you for what's ahead, or they give you a moment to say "What do YOU think about this? What's in YOUR head right now? How does THIS make you feel?". Lyrics are great, but sometimes it's better to leave things unsaid and let the listener decide how to feel and what something is about.

It seems like every 5 years people think it's gonna happen on it's X anniversary. First there was the 5 year, that didn't happen. Then the 10 year, that didn't happen. Then now we're on the 15 year, that's not gonna happen.

It took the fragile 18 years to get repressed so looks like we've got another 3 years or so.

I can only give the meaningless reply that I as a random stranger agree with your post. They (the instrumentals) aren't bad, they aren't broken and they aren't inherently or truly missing something. It's just a kind of personal sense of wanting to hear Trent Reznor sing over them.

Edit:
I think my add blocker somehow blocked a referrer header or some extras to make a reply work as intended. But i think it's clear i was responding to this post: https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/threads/139-Random-NIN-Thoughts?p=565126#post565126

Seems drastic. What did you do between The Fragile and With Teeth??

I don't know where else to post this but The Fragile is my favorite album. It's so fucking hard and intense. That's all.

FYI: I believe this is generally accepted as The Fragile Appreciation thread: https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/threads/3478-Happy-Birthday-to-The-Fragile

But you can certainly share that thought here, too! I'm ready for it to come out of it's vinyl hiatus.

My random NIN thought.

I want some NIN teasers, I want a drop of a short synth loop, I want a sign of life, I want to watch a new album grow like I did before.

After re-watching the Gift performance of Head Down, I feel like it needs to make a return to the setlists. Swap out 1,000,000 or Discipline since they've been played enough.

are we really going to hit the 1 year anniversary of the halsey collab with no new nin music?

Not really surprised. Trent mentioned the other day that they're finishing up a film score, and I'm sure earlier in the year they were finishing up work on Bones & All. I don't know if they've had time to work on NIN stuff around all that plus touring. I'm sure we'll have new Trent & Atticus music by the end of the year, but new NIN might have to wait a bit longer.

I bet they have been doing both simultaneously. Whether we will get to hear it...

I wonder how much unreleased or scrapped NIN music there is. Outtakes or stuff he deemed not good enough. There’s the little bits and pieces we may know about like “Just Do It”, the original follow up to Add Violence and possibly those With Teeth songs we have lyrics for but there’s probably so much we don’t even know about. Deviations 1 was a huge pleasant surprise.

I don't think the vault of unreleased, unseen and unheard stuff is that big actually... The guy is notoriously eco-friendly when it comes to ideas and stems and chances are we already heard most of it, recycled in the form of collaborations or soundtracks. Deviations 1 actually showed us that.

I'd guess that the amount of stuff worth pursuing to completion but not released isn't as much as you'd think. Yes, we ended up getting Not So Pretty Now and Non-Entity a few years later, but they also played those live during those tours, so they weren't completely unreleased. As for the other With Teeth songs mentioned on the lyrics poster, who knows if they were completed or not. There's probably lots of demos and things, like what was released in that iTunes Interview with Hesitation Marks which was clearly demo quality and not anywhere near final.

Deviations 1 was probably the exception to that since we have known for years there was a ton of extra material from The Fragile sessions. Most of that unreleased stuff they put on there is basically demos that they cleaned up and mastered, only one or two songs on there stated "Instrumental" meaning there were ever lyrics accompanying it.

I haven't heard of any follow up to Add Violence that was scrapped. I think they just did Bad Witch next and abandoned the EP trilogy idea, but I don't think there's an unreleased album from between those sessions.

I can’t remember where but I’m sure there was an interview where Trent or Atticus were talking about how the original last EP of the trilogy was too “predictable” or “forced” or something so they went back to the drawing board. I don’t imagine there were many if any songs that survived maybe just ideas or fragments but I’m just curious.

I can’t see any possible unreleased material released without a good reason, we know how Trent is a bit of a perfectionist so I don’t ever expect him too. I’m just curious how much there is.

I get the feeling there is much more unreleased video footage than audio floating around in the vaults. Self Destruct pro shot (officially), multiple Tension shows and I think there were a few With Teeth club shows recorded. Brixton Academy? And god knows what else!

Video recordings is one thing we know is in their vaults. All the Wave Goodbye club shows were filmed, only a few videos made it out. Tension was filmed, but I think only what was posted to YouTube was finished. I doubt they went through the trouble of editing the whole concert only to use half of it for streaming. I'm sure there many more shows that were filmed with video.

I think it's safe to say that pretty much every NIN show has a soundboard recording, likely starting with 1994 shows, but especially since 2005 with digital consoles, it's just too easy to record the main outs.

I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't at least a camera setup at FOH to capture the show, knowing that they were playing TDS in full for the first time. I was there, but I have no recollection of seeing cameras or not.

It wasn't recorded because they couldn't come to an agreement with the venue about it. I can't remember the exact details, but I think it had something to do with the venue wanting to charge them a bunch of money to do it. Someone who remembers better than I do can chime in on that.
