[WITH_TEETH] remixes were tedious for the most part. Almost no creativity in them whatsoever apart from El-P's mix of Only and Photek's THTF [ruff mix]. Right Where It Belongs v2 is great, though, but we all know why that is!

Don't forget the DFA one! Though I never quite understood why they placed the vocals off beat. Also, I like Richard X's remix a lot, too. It's his signature sound of hard hitting drums combined with dirty synthesizers, while he somehow manages to give it that clean and crispy sound. Bought his album recently and was suprised about how "80s" it felt (in a positive way).

NIN and Paul McCartney are headlining the same festival. The following scenario seems like an obvious winner to me:

NIN's set: Paul joins them to play bass on Piggy.
PM's set: Trent joins them to play harpsichord on Piggies.

Makes sense, right?

Macca was doing the one-man band (http://touch.dailymotion.com/video/x22vz3_paul-mccartney-coming-up_music) thing WAY before Trent.

;87450']So, there's rumors flying around of a new song dropping in the next few weeks, there's a world tour, and they're planning on revamping nin.com

all things that tend to happen just before a new album drops..
just putting it out there (i'm prepared to be very wrong on this)

My prediction:

New track June 6 with U.S. fall arena dates announced the same day along with an announcement of a new EP scheduled to coincide with BEATS streaming service both released the same day in August. Of course, the new NIN EP will be the featured release to get BEATS some extra attention and vice versa.

Edit: Also, I think in some fashion HTDA and Gary Numan will be opening for NIN and/or the Cure co-headlining. Basically, some kind of combination of those bands.

The Cure will not be doing any US dates this year aside from a couple festivals...Robert plays 3 and a half hour sets these days, the last thing he will EVER do is co headline with another band...

This is on Aaron North's wiki entry. Holy crap if this is true:

"In late 2008, North suffered a nervous breakdown while mixing the Jubilee album. After subsequent hospitalizations, he ceased all activity with the band. A "motorcycle accident" was used as a public explanation at the time. Months later, attempts to form a new lineup of the band and finish the album were also abandoned due to North's struggles with mental health and addiction."
Is there ANY confirmation behind this? Where the hell is Aaron these days? Latest information I could find was over a year old.

I hope there is something on the way. Personally I hope it doesn't end up being too digital like HTDA. I know he'll never win a 'guitarist-of-the-year' type award, but I'd like to see Trent incorporate some more guitar in his music. Not necessarily in the same vein as The Slip, maybe something a little more melodic. I've always thought he should crack out the acoustic again, the closing section of Metal is one of my favorite moments of Trent's career. Even something like AATCHB, which is one of the more guitar-heavy NIN songs.

Agreed re: both Metal and AATCHB. Especially the latter; I think it's some of the more intricate guitar work that Trent has done.

Some of that is Danny Lohner. The songs he co-wrote during The Fragile era have some very interesting guitar orchestrations.

I can't decide if I want to write a biography of NIN, make a documentary, or do a scholarly treatise on each song à la Pushing Ahead of the Dame (http://bowiesongs.wordpress.com).

I've wondered about this as well. I'm sure Trent is "playing ball" in some way by A. signing HTDA/NIN to Columbia and/or B. Getting back into bed with Jimmy Iovine(Interscope) for this new streaming service, etc.. The rights to the Fragile(and other goodies) have to fall into play somewhere in all of that... Surely.

Exactly, it's the nature of the site. The few official Tumblrs that don't have that level of interaction usually just come off as not understanding how Tumblr works.

In any case, I don't see how it's any different from fan-sourcing nin.com's live photo and video galleries (though who knows if those will make it through the site changeover).

Am I the only one who thinks it's weird that there hasn't been much discussion about NIN signing to a major label? There were pages of multiple threads regarding Adrian Belew being old and whether or not he quit and other random things, but the Columbia thing has only been passively mentioned here and there, from my understanding. Is there a discussion about this somewhere I missed? It seems like a big deal.

jessamineny

Probably because people already had that discussion when his new band was signed. And I know I highly suspected NIN would follow suit as well. So it's sort of... whatever.

I thought maybe Trent would keep NIN independent (for whatever reason) but I don't really care that NIN is part of Columbia now too, because HTDA has done well enough on the label. I'd think that most of the other people here just don't care all that much because of HTDA.

If I remember correctly, the only time (hah) NIN has premiered a track before its release on an album/single was 'Home' and 'NSPN' in 2005, and I guess a few of the 1988 shows. Now I'm Nothing doesn't count...

This is different from virtually every other band in existence. Going to be strange if NIN play a bunch of new tracks before an album comes out, something they've never done before.

BUT - I do believe that they'll have the album out in mid July, before the tour starts.

Hesitation Marks is an awful, awful name. I'm surprised more people haven't commented on it, or do they not know what it refers to (http://www.enotes.com/hesitation-wounds-reference/hesitation-wounds)? (Trigger warning for suicide on that link, btw)

In fairness, if you search 'hesitation marks' specifically, the first eight million hits are for Nine Inch Nails and people probably wouldn't think to search for variations on the phrase to find out what it means, but surely people would have heard of the phrase? I mean... This is the Nine Inch Nails fanbase. We're not exactly unfamiliar with suicide and self-harm.

Anyway, yeah. Awful name for a new album there, Trent. I found myself triggered just reading it but I guess I'm just a delicate little flower?

...Shit.

Haters gonna hate!

I'm realizing that the hardest thing I can do in regards to my music collection is whittle down 20 hours of NIN into a less-than-80-minute CD to play while I'm driving back home all afternoon. It's not so much a matter of favorite songs, but favorite VERSIONS of songs. Do I want the album version? Live? Alternate live? Live featuring _______? Remix? Version version? Should I get The Frail + The Wretched as a pair from the same collection so they flow together perfectly?

I almost just wanna hit shuffle, select the first 80 minutes, and roll with it.

If you're having trouble deciding between versions, I've whipped up a few combined versions of songs over the years that I could send your way. One example is splicing The Frail into quiet parts of Wretched [Version], which might fit your requirements nicely. Let me know if you're interested, but if you consider the practise an abomination, I ask that you don't burn me for heresy (onto which I slapped the first verse of the demo version). There's early versions of TDTWWA (http://remix.nin.com/play/mix?id=24578) and Mr Self Destruct (http://remix.nin.com/play/mix?id=24293) on the remix site.

These tour dates definitely need more UK. I NEED to see full on NIN live production. None of this daylight festival nonsense!

Tell me about it! The tour schedule looks pretty clear in September... now, I wouldn't want to place any bets on it but I'd quite like to see an iTunes show appear at least. Just a thought.

I think TF 5.1 will come out spring 2014, to allow a decent buffer between album releases. Kind of like TDS DE in Fall, then WT in following Spring. Mastering was finished a while ago, if I'm not mistaken. Though technically a few months off, maybe they'd label it as a 15 year anniversary release. But... I'm not going to bet on dis :)

Demon Seed is my jam.

I really like how the song is built upon mood as opposed to normal song structures, it reminds me of a track off the Fragile. I really hope we see more of these in the new record. Some of these songs lengths clocking in at over 5 to 6 minutes gives me a feeling some might!

I'm kind of thinking that might be what we're going to see as well. I feel like everything post With Teeth hasn't been as personal as what came before it. Obviously YZ was telling a story from multiple viewpoints, so the personal aspect wasn't even the intention. But . . . TR went through some shit, and obviously he's come out the other side, and that has to be a big source of inspiration for some writing.

The name makes sense to me. In more than one sense.

Apart from the fact that NIN have always been into dark imagery, isn't this album pretty much a "hesitation mark" in itself? It sure looked like NIN would never be coming back after the final wave of "farewell" concerts. Flash-forward - now it becomes clear that, in Reznor-speak, "soon" means 5-6 years while "the foreseeable future" lands at 3-4 years. He tried to let his primary musical identity "commit suicide", so to speak, but he hesitated and here we are.

There's also the whole deal about the artwork tying in with "The Downward Spiral". As others have suggested, this may be a sequel of sorts that's actually about pulling yourself back up and re-building. Awkward title or not, there is something oddly positive about it. "The Downward Spiral" just goes downwards and ends at its lowest. "Hesitation Marks" at least implies that, even in the darkest hour, something (or someone?) can make you reconsider what you're about to do and pull you out of it.

Bottom line, this is Nine Inch Nails. The band that did the "Broken Movie", a still-unreleased - and alledgedly pretty fucking disturbing - suicide anthem called "Just Do It" and a whole double album about trying to save yourself, only to arrive at the same fucked-up, deconstructed place you came from. Don't expect this one to carry any stickers advertising suicide hotlines, even if Trent is in a better place now...

(I'm in no way making light of suicide in this post. But I do firmly believe that taboos will never solve such problems.)

Nine Inch Nails concerts are the only place I feel like breaking the unwritten cool rule about wearing a shirt of the band you're going to see at the concert.

That red Hesitation Marks shirt is going to be worn with delight at their show in October when I see them...

Also, I was listening to the Every Day Is Exactly the Same EP yesterday and I love the DFA remix of THTF. Made me start thinking about remix albums and I really hope Trent decides to release a remix album for Hesitation Marks. I know the deluxe edition has like three remix bonus tracks but I love remix albums as companion pieces to the record.

I usually wear one of my older nin shirts that is obviously old, because I don't wear them much just beause they look a little raggedy, so it gives me an opportunity to get some use out of them. Lots of memories associated with those shirts.

Found an old interview with Reznor and Malm & discovered, that "Crown of Thornes" was one of the first names of what would later become "Nine Inch Nails". Back in the demo-days.

Not that big a revelation, but I either forgot about this or never knew it to begin with. Also my brain immediately started to make a bunch of connections, e.g. to the radio-friendly version of "Hurt" and that old rumor of "Nine Inch Nails" alluding to Christs crucifixion.

The Fragile would have been better as a single disc for me... half amazing tracks/other half filler
10 Miles High and And All That Could Have Been should have been included, yes i know one is on the vinyl version

My tracklist for The Fragile...
The Way Out Is Through
Somewhat Damaged
The Day the World Went Away
The Frail
The Wretched
We're in This Together
The Fragile
Even Deeper
Pilgrimage
The Mark Has Been Made
10 Miles High
Starfuckers, Inc.
The Big Come Down
Underneath It All
The Great Below
And All That Could Have Been

I love With Teeth... don't get the hate for that album. Downward Spiral & With Teeth are my two faves

Year Zero... the concept and idea behind it is great... the album on the other hand gets a tad boring after a while
It starts to sound the samey after a while... felt the same about Welcome Oblivion, which dislike even more
My Violent Heart, Me I'm Not, and In This Twilight are the only tracks that I can listen to really and enjoy
The rest are bleh.

The Slip doesn't feel like a full on album... more like a collection of not fully fleshed studio band tracks
It could have used some more depth in its production. It's very stripped down and one dimensional.
Letting You is the only I can listen to... Discipline is in my top worst of NIN track list.

Ghosts just seems like an NIN audition for score work... nothing more.
It has its moments of goodness though I would have loved to hear some of the ideas actually fleshed out into full on NIN tracks. I think there's some great ideas that could have been great full on tracks with some more work and lyrics.

For me, the last great NIN album was With Teeth... I can listen to that album all the way through. Only Broken, The Downward Spiral, and With Teeth I can do that with.

I felt they have lost their depth with the last few releases
The production is just not the same anymore

Being glitchy doesn't cut it. The beats aren't the same. There's no real edge anymore.

And Welcome Oblivion wasn't a huge departure from the NIN-style... just a more boring version of Year Zero with monotone vocals.

Come Back Haunted is pretty good, sounds promising.

But I just want that atmosphere and depth back... the layering of sounds... and the edge that made NIN... well NIN.

TGD has grown on me. When it first came out I couldn't believe it. I just couldn't understand it, the kick drum sounded straight out of some happy hardcore, I didn't think it belonged in a NIN tune. I think I've musically matured a bit since then. However, I've never been able to listen to YZ as a coherent album. Perhaps due to the ARG and playing the leaked tracks much more often than the others, and having my emotional memory of them tied up in the excitement of the time. Also I feel a bit cheated that we hardly saw any YZ tracks live in the uk, particularly MYM and ITT. I had a lot doing on in 2007...

All the rumors for that album had some truth in them. It was said that it would have elements of hip-hop, trip-hop, drum&bass, funk, tons of electronics and no guitars. Trent ultimately added guitars everywhere, but you can notice many of the influences that Trent and others had been talking about for years regarding the new album.

I remember how Trent specifically said that his next album would be a mix of Prince and Aphex Twin, and nobody would like it. XD You can notice the funk in songs like ITV or WIE, but in my opinion the "Aphex Twin+Prince" track is "The Big Come Down".

just had a random thought. Since the music industry is still being re-shaped, has TR ever considered doing a track-at-a-time like work on one track, then put it out in low quality to preview and then sell it. Then get feedback and work on another track and so on a so forth.

BRoswell

Great idea. Trent puts the track out there, a third of the fans bitch about how it sounds nothing like *insert favorite album here*, a third of them praise the hell out of it without giving any specific thoughts on it, and the final third attempt to give some sort of advice, but everyone says different things and none of them can come to a consensus. Trent stops involving his fans in the song creation process after one song. The end.

Anyone wanna comment on how liberally Kanye West is borrowing from the NIN playbook? It's being mentioned in most of the reviews of 'Yeezus'. It has to be pretty career affirming for TR to have someone that a lot of people consider to be THE pop artist of the era be so influenced by you.

The end. Well I was serious so I can't tell if you're being sarcastic but it reads that way. The one track at-at-a-time idea might work...I think. After about 12 or 14 tracks maybe the fans could build their own album and sequencing?

AgentofChaos
06-16-2013, 11:32 AM
just had a random thought. Since the music industry is still being re-shaped, has TR ever considered doing a track-at-a-time like work on one track, then put it out in low quality to preview and then sell it. Then get feedback and work on another track and so on a so forth.

Ask Billy Corgan how that plan played out.

I don't think there's much of a difference in pre-1999 NIN and after-1999 NIN. Sure, less angst, but the music isn't too different. TR changes the sound on every album. Year Zero is a classic, too.

The sound was very different last decade and it didnt connect with a lot of people. Im not saying it was good or bad but there was a difference.

The last decade connected with so many people, just because it didn't connect with someone who was 12 when PHM came out doesn't mean it's less good. You can't compare reaction of fans pre-facebook to post-facebook, human beings are horrible and will be vicious about everything given the chance.

NIN is NIN is NIN to me. There's changes in subject matter, and improvements in his musical ability (no way could 1989 Trent create Ghosts), but it's still NIN. If you view The Fragile as his magnum opus, you really should check out Year Zero or PHM or Ghosts. Wayyyy less Starfuckers on those.

I would say "Still" and "Deep" are part of the 1999-2001 Fragile era....There is a LOT of people who seem to think post Fragile era NIN is shit. (I don't agree, but I also don't think Trent has come close to matching his 1989-2001 material)...anyone who thinks With Teeth and The Slip are as highly regarded in the NIN community as Broken or TDS is smoking crack, that's like saying Wild Mood Swings by The Cure is as highly regarded as Pornography or Exciter by Depeche Mode is as highly regarded as Violator....That's just the facts, it does seem that there's a 1989-2001 NIN and then the post sobriety NIN (starting from WT to now)

If you're talking about everything post '05 being "ordinary at best," i couldn't agree more. I absolutely LOVE every single nin album, and i especially love year zero. And no, this isn't due to age...i started listening to nin when broken came out and i'm 33.
I have to agree with what some of you are saying about the general vibe being negative now though. The first time I heard pretty hate machine I almost blew my nuts.
The lyrics were captivating the music cliked.
The first time I heard broken/fixed I thought it sucked.
It sounded too much like speed metal. Then I listened to it more.It still sucks.
I hope the next album is more like phm.
Just my opinion.

Seconded. Ministry does the speed-metal genre better, IMHO.

I agree, PHM was his only good CD so far....Broken and fixed was aimed at the stupid lollapoloza crowd..

Is it really a "trouble" that people voice their thoughts on new music from bands they enjoy? Is there a need to address their discussions on a forum like an issue and polarize the camp as either "yes men" or "bitter assholes"? Where's the nuance in being a fan and discussing the ups and downs of a piece of art? We're not talking politics here (which also could use some nuance), we're voicing our often passionate and different views on music, much like Trent does to musicians all the time. Hint, Chris Cornell's adventures with Timbaland and Trent's amusing and hard hitting POV's.

The problem isn't that people voice their thoughts, is that they act like they're entitled to new music written in a certain way for them. There's a big difference between saying that you don't like a piece of art and acting like the artist should have consulted you and that the sky is falling as a result of them creating what they want to create.

I would love if you linked me to some of those posts. I've clearly missed them :D

I'm not trying to quell discussion of any sort. The question was raised as to whether or not the curmudgeonly attitude of the fan base was a new thing. I cited the fact that it wasn't. Shouldn't people be just as free to critique the fan base as the music? Don't you think that helps in remaining objective in our views?

I was 12 when broken came out, backtracked to phm, and yes, i fucking LOVE YZ and the Slip (which always felt like an ep to me anyway.) I really don't understand all the bitching...i was around ets for the arg and wave goodbye and whatnot, and all i remember is people being super excited.
I still fucking LOVE pretty hate machine (i hear older fans saying it doesn't "speak" to them anymore sometimes,) i LOVE with teeth...maybe i'm just a fanboy. yeah, i'm tired of HLAH and closer and THTF but good lord...i just don't get it, people talking about everything after '99 being "half assed" or "sold out" or whatever the fuck. I have a brother who is 19 mos younger than me and he hates everything after tds, and he was there with me at nin shows as far back as '94, and his dislike of albums like YZ just blows my mind.
I do have a "least favorite album," which would be ghosts, but that's probably just due to the lack of vocals.
NIN is NIN to me too, and as long as Trent is still making records, i'll be a happy man.

Year Zero for me represented a time of renewed interest in NIN which slightly waned after WT, which, with the exception of BYIT and ATLITW, was just too much of a straight forward rock record to suit my tastes. YZ remains my second favorite NIN and even though it kinda tanked sales wise at the time, it's having a much bigger influence. You can hear it in Deadmau5, Skrillex and even Kanye. Since YZ everything has moved away from hip hop to techo and all it's sub genres.

there's also a line drawn in the sand for most people that signifies when we were in middle/high school and whe we went to college/hit the real world and priorities and tastes shifted and expanded (and some of that fan base just plain grew up).

not to mention the changes in the musical climate and the post-sober work ethic. and of course, nostalgia factoring in with the mystery and excitement in the fledgling internet/heavy speculation phase between albums when it would be front page coverage at the slightest hint of news.

also covered in previous posts by debunking everyone's ridiculous expectations of what someone should be doing with their art.

long story short- nostalgia makes everything seem better from a distance. sometimes it really WAS better back then. sometimes, you're the one with the problem.

That's something I've never quite understood. Trent's never released anything that wasn't the absolute best at what it was doing. If you're looking at it subjectively, there's obviously going to be releases that you enjoy over others. In my case it's The Fragile. He'll probably never put anything out that I like as much as that record, but that's just aesthetics. I like the strings, the harsh but still organic sounding synths, and the overall broken sound of that album, but I realize that that's not what With Teeth was trying to do. It's sterile, analogue, and quickly paced. But it's still the best album with that general sound that there is. That's why you can't judge a NIN album based on your preference to another NIN album.

He's one of the most eclectic musicians there is (albeit with a very unique style that reverberates through each album no matter how different it may be) and he never returns to the same sound. If you want The Downward Spiral 2.0 you're going to be disappointed 100% of the time. What you can expect is something that will sound different from everything he's done up to this point. You can expect it to achieve technical excellence, you can expect it to sound fresh even in the current over-saturated state of the music industry, and you can expect it to pave the way for a whole new group of artists inside their own genres. As long as he's breaking new ground when he tries to, and as long as what he releases is as unlike anything else as his releases always have been, I'll never be let down, and as far as I'm concerned I hope he never does repeat his past, and that every release truly surprises me with it's style.

I was thinking last night, maybe the Fragile re-issue is on hold because Interscope are going to re-issue the entire catalog to cash in on the new album? (or maybe that'll be next year, released along with the Greatest Hits)

Broken+bonus tracks / Fixed - combined 2 disc reissue + new vinyl. maybe new 5.1 mix?
TDS - I know it got remastered but that was almost ten years ago. new pressing of 5.1 mix
The Fragile - big box set as hinted at over the past few years
With Teeth - ? maybe. maybe just a re-issue with bonus tracks / demos
YZ - who knows

I think what's more likely is that there'll be a boxset with EVERYTHING as opposed to individual reissues, but a girl can dream.

keep in mind that trent and co. intentionally used phasing and various other techniques to make it sound...off. so it's possible remastering it would either eliminate all of the crazy/fucked up sounding stuff on the album, or it would bring it into such harsh relief that it would be nearly un-listenable.

The contemporaries are almost all former Nothing Records bands, that's probably the connection.

i think it was mostly that TG & foetus were in the contemporaries section, not the influencers section. and that manson is in two sections.

I don't like how people compare God and Trent Reznor all the time.... I mean, he's good and all, but he's no Trent.

Maybe this has been asked before, but why is The Slip so "quiet"? Whether its the ditributed CD or playing on a media device/iPod I gotta turn it up to an obnoxious level. Worst is when I shuffle and a song from TS comes up, first reaction is WTF song can't I hear?...

err, you should recheck that. the album was mastered just as loud as NIN has been since 1999 (though i suppose you could argue 1994...). some songs start very quiet, though, obviously, and LITS was kept pretty quiet.

^^^ Honestly no. This is from different sources (CD, free DL) and using different equipment- varying car stereos, speakers, home systems, etc. And not song related, I do know LITS is a quiet song though.

Always found it to be very odd and one of the reasons it's not played by me more often.

I don't get this from the album as a whole, but I will say that I think Head Down is actually a few dbs quieter than it should be. I turn the album up a couple of notches at that song and only turn it back down at The Four Of Us Are Dying.

Nope, have a look at waveforms and the like. Album is loud bro

Remember: never trust your ears. Summing music down to a 2D waveform and looking at it with your eyes is much more reliable.

i would much rather have to turn up my stereo because an album is a little quieter (a la Rid Of Me by PJ Harvey) and has proper dynamics than to have it brickwalled all the way through (like most things are these days).

i find it (the fixed hi-res download) easily as loud as With Teeth. how does WT go for you in these situations?

I'm fine with it, and I'm OK with some of my CD's that date back to the '80s. TS is literally super fucking quiet/very low gain (for me only apparently), I have to turn the volume way up every time it comes on and nothing else is comparable- NIN or otherwise.

Hmmmm.... I think I'm gonna listen to the actual purchased disc again. Delete everything on my computer/media players and burn that in there.

Thanks for the replies.

I''l throw one more in for mine sounds about on par with everything else... the original PHM master is way quieter for instance..

Thought I'd share this from the NIN subreddit:

im saying the track names look weak. "all time low", "dissapointed" "find my way"....the fuck? what happened to names like "heresy" "mr self destruct" or "happiness in slavery"? TR is stuck in rut and has been for sometime, just admit it
and my response

uh, no, I won't. he's far from in a rut. him being in a rut is when he released a CD full of remixes of a single song because he couldn't bring himself to make a full album, and even when he did it tortured him. Trent is at the most prolific, adventurous and creative time of his life so far - soundtracks, remixes, two bands on tour, collaborations, a massive new NIN album... no rut whatsoever.

a stinkin' rut? jeezzzz...

Mr Self Destruct is named after a Soft Cell song, so that doesn't really count anyway

Your first mistake was expecting much from the NIN subreddit. I was originally excited to find that the there WAS a NIN subreddit, but it has since become one of my less frequented online NIN communities...the vibe overall seems much more whiny and negative than others...or maybe I'm just tired of Reddit in general.

I am moving into my new apartment this weekend.

My GF is giving me a set of surround sound speakers before said move.

In 2004, I picked up TDS' 5.1 release (and would soon do the same for W_T). I had no surround sound system. But I knew that one day, the day would come.

I could have done this at a friend's, but I wanted to wait until I was in my own space. There's just something more rewarding when it is.

This weekend. Fuck. Yeah.

just make sure your surround receiver is calibrated correctly (most of the good ones allow you to set distance and levels individually for each speaker) and in a passive surround mode (so it won't add any processing).

also, have fun!

Ill have to relisten to TDS 5.1 sometime. I skimmed it and it sounded freshly abrasive and challenging. I just picked up w_t 5.1 and listened to about half of it. I didn't hear much in the rear channels until "only" where the panning is crazy. I don't think I've got the setup quite right though (and I think my pioneer bcs 222 might be a bit crappy as far as 5.1 systems go)
