Been seeing a lot of reimaginings of the Bad Witch cover and I'm disappointed to see none of them have deployed something like this.

I know it will never happen, but I would love to see the big four of Industrial tour or a least a festival with Industrial acts of the past and present.

Headliners:

NIN
Skinny Puppy
Ministry
KMFDM

After that comment about one of the songs from YZ sounding like KMFDM (and Trent's reply) I doubt he would ever tour with them. Festival would be best chance of that.

Long before I learned about the waterfall that is Oxararfoss was on The Fragile, I actually always used to think it was duct tape being utilized and presented as a metaphor as an attempt to repair something fragile or fragility in general due to the actual album title. I also can't believe it took me this long to mention this here. That was also my impression of The Fragile since 2002, and even though I currently know about Oxararfoss, I still can't help but become reminded of how I used to perceive it.

how hot do you wash your clothes?

flip the shirts inside-out, wash on cold, hang to dry. i've worn my AV diagram shirt about once a week since i got it last year and it hasn't faded a bit.

I wash them all on cold and hang dry. I might need to try the inside out trick though. My “Add Violence” shirt didn’t survive one wash.

Always inside-out. It helps protect the print.

yeah, i wash all of my shirts inside-out and they hold up pretty well. do you go to a laundromat or use a washer at home? if it's a laundromat, i'm guessing it's just a rough machine.

You know what I always thought was really interesting is that TR used John Lennon's mellotron on loan from Interscope during the TDS days. That the mellotron sounds on The Downward Spiral (the song itself) came from the instrument that (I think) was used on Strawberry Fields Forever kind of blows my mind. Charlie Clouser had some interesting comments about this on his Gearslutz posts.

It was Me, I'm Not. An ETS/Spral member said ""Play Me, Im not. Then play 03 - You're No Good - KMFDM - Hau Ruck, Exact same bass line ... and sounds the same. Its kmfdm revamped .. nothing new ... (kind of) again ...ITS STOLEN FROM KMFDM -but KMFDMs version is better ... You're no good - Hau Ruck."

Trent's response was ""You: go fuck yourself. Now. The day I steal something from KMFD-Fucking-M is a sad fucking day indeed. Call up Sasha and have him sue me if you feel that strongly about it, meanwhile let everyone have some goddamned fun without you pissing on the parade."

This is why the vinyl market is gonna collapse and all we're going to have left is tape labels. They're doing the same dumb shit they did with CDs but with an infinitely smaller demographic: Gen X and millennial music fans who are still obsessed with physical media almost 20 years after Napster helped blow it all up.

Capitalism is so stupid.

kleiner

Is it not limited at all? Like, it’s a standard double LP? Black vinyl, no special extras, no numbering or anything? I don’t think I’ve ever seen something repressed on vinyl cost that much without it having some sort of unique thing that helped justify it (and even then a lot of “limited edition” releases are ridiculously priced).

Yesterday, I had the opportunity of a lifetime to interview an idol of mine in Shaun King. He overheard me talking about NIN to our videographer because I had a little NIN pin underneath my graduation garb, and he saw it.

AND THEN LATER SHAUN BROUGHT UP NIN AS WE WERE FILMING. Which is just such a wild trip for me. Getting one of my idols to mention my musical obsession. Pretty cool.

Last night, I listened to Year Zero front to back with headphones on, which is something I haven’t done in about a decade.

In our current political climate, it’s turned out to be sadly prophetic, but goddamn, what a great record. I got really into the different narratives/perspectives, and I love all the textures, glitches, and little nuances that are lurking in the shadows of pretty much every track.

I loved the ARG and the album itself when it originally came out, and it’s a bittersweet feeling how well it’s held up 11 years after-the-fact.

I also gave the front-to-back headphone treatment this past week to The Fragile, With Teeth, Broken, NTAE, and Add Violence.

Good times.

I'm curious as to what is considered a cover for that release. The wiki has seven, but two of them are almost exactly the same with what looks like a minor glitch in rendering, two of them are just color inversions, and only three of them were ever used as the cover. Are the other four really covers, or are they just promotional artwork?

My guess it's a printed signature. Why would TR take time to sign a bunch of Postcards for JB hifi? It's basically Australia's BEST BUY.

Bands do this type of thing all the time as part of a promotional release. The label coordinates it and ships the signed items to retailers. Newbury Comics in Boston offers signed items a lot. It might even signal some sort of tour promotion at some point in the near future. In fact I wouldn't be shocked if they added a couple of AUS dates after Japan in August.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. I just sent them an email asking if its actually being signed, who's signing it, and what the size of the postcard is. We'll see what they say soon. In the meantime, I'm saving a screenshot of the offer page in case they change it down the line.

So I got a response, but apparently I had emailed a specific store, not a corporate office. This is the response I got:

I’m afraid that as this is an online only offer, at a store level we actually do not have any information about who will be signing the card, nor the size of it. There is also no information on our intranet as we will not be receiving any postcards in store. The best I can do is assume, and say that it will be a standard postcard size (105mm x 148mm), and that it will be signed by both band mates (honestly this will probably be printed, too). I’m sorry I don’t have any information for you on it. If you query again closer to its release date there may be some information available to us.

So not much information there, but he did say "honestly this will probably be printed, too". Not sure how much more value his assumption has over anybody else, but there's that. Has anyone tried contacting a corporate office?

I have a feeling they're going to have quite a shitshow on their hands if these start arriving with a machine printed signature on them.

Well they are out of stock now, so if you just ordered it today, they may have already run out. My order from yesterday says Confirmed, so I don't think they're just canceling everybody's. Looks like you can still order the vinyl with postcard though if you want that: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/music/Whats-Hot/alternative/bad-witch-vinyl/638548/

For me, Josh was the band's best drummer. That first NIN show I went to in the summer of '06 was still incredible. The way he hit those drums. It sounded like a fucking hammer and I felt it inside right into my heart. It was a great feeling.

Thank you for pointing that out. I was offline all day yesterday, and by the time I heard about it this morning the CD with signed postcard was sold out. I figured that meant they ran out of postcards, and didn't even check the vinyl (plus, I was really ordering it for the postcard, so I didn't want to pay $50... but I did anyway because I'll never get anything signed in person and that's way cheaper than any autographs on eBay).

I was coming to post about my code, too! It would've expired yesterday, but I was curious - honestly probably gonna use it on that huge Bad Witch bundle. I'd wait for the next set of remasters and whatnot, but I don't wanna test my luck too hard and actually have it expire before then.

I love MTV Classic, but lately, they've been playing the SAME videos every week for the past few months on 120 Minutes. They have like, 8 videos they play every week, and rotate the rest of the videos every few weeks. Head Like a Hole is a weekly video. It's a shame, because when MTV Classic relaunched, 120 Mins was awesome..different videos every week. was still discovering stuff I've never heard of before.

i've heard multiple stories (including my own from when i went in to get an MRI) of techs warning people about the noise and then saying, "oh, you'll be fine, then" after being informed that the patient was a NIN fan.

edit: jeez that was barely a sentence. i blame it on the fever i've been running all day.

I imagine a lot of it has to do with licensing. Back in the day, bands would beg MTV to play their videos, but now that you can look up almost any video you want online, there's no longer the need to do that. Now it's a matter of MTV begging and paying for the videos.

So I got a response, but apparently I had emailed a specific store, not a corporate office. This is the response I got:

So not much information there, but he did say "honestly this will probably be printed, too". Not sure how much more value his assumption has over anybody else, but there's that. Has anyone tried contacting a corporate office?

I have a feeling they're going to have quite a shitshow on their hands if these start arriving with a machine printed signature on them.Update:

Sorry for the delayed response. I sent an email to our music department head office and received a reply today, and the details are as follows: Unsure of sizing, but assuming it will be the size of a CD case; it will be signed by both Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and they are legitimate signatures, not printed.

I randomly decided to work on a cover of I Do Not Want This, more to just have fun trying to approximate the sounds and sharpen the analytical side of my music listening than to try to make something awesome.

I was listening to the instrumental, and christ, it's so beautiful. I don't know how excited and in awe I was as a kid with this music but I'm still amazed at the sound palette and how *musical* all the noise is. Trent, Sean B., Chris, Flood and any other musicians - I've never heard any popular music that is that noisy and yet masterfully tonal at time same time. The distorted, syncopated, almost subliminal rhythms being played out on what sounds like clipped synth toms and sub bass, the weird squelchy cutoff/resonant sounds, what sounds like the piano strings being played directly, the noise fading in and out perfectly, that weird synth that sounds like the "truck backing up" tone played three octaves each, the way the bass drum sound keeps being treated. It sounds like the black and white noise grain on the NTAE and BW cover looks, and like the TDS cover art at the same time.

Goddamn it, I love it. I'd kill to hear the stems somehow.

Na, they were closed because ETS has power tripping mods. It’s the best and worst thing about this forum. There’s low tolerance for trolling and shitposts, that’s great. In this particular case it’s pretty absurd that we’re days away from a new NIN release and we don’t have a thread to discuss it.

Sometimes I wonder - without a malicous intent - if some people were actually born today. The internet is littered with platforms where thousands of people are talking about upcoming events: World Cup fixtures, next episode or even next season of a TV series, the games which were announced at E3, etc. I don't know if calling it a culture would be the appropriate word for it, but what I mean is that it's not a new precedent to talk about stuff we barely know about - and we already know stuff about BW, so it's even more true for it.

So yeah, I legit don't know whether you are an older folk, and this is news for you, or if it's just the highest form of elitism being presented right here.

Regarding the whole thing that got THE THIRD Bad Witch thread shut down (which, I actually think is hilarious)...I can get why some people are upset that on a 6-track, 31-minute release Reznor chose to make two of the longer songs instrumentals. To be more specific, I can understand why some people today are upset.
When Broken came out, there was no social media and therefore no real hype machine. There might have been a magazine ad that said "new ep coming soon" with a date and a backwards, orange "n". That was it. People could put the date on their calendar and call their local radio station to get them to play "Wish" but that was it. Fans of PHM heard that track and probably lost their minds, either in a positive way or a negative way. For some fans, they were in their local record store one day and probably did a double-take when they saw something new in the Nine Inch Nails section. I remember being in a Best Buy in Altemonte Springs, Florida when I saw the NIN logo on a set of VHS tapes. I had no fucking clue what was going on. After that, I paid more attention to Nine Inch Nails on the internet and, for the past twenty years, I have been fodder for the hype machine that's slowly gotten bigger and faster and more voracious. I must have played that "La Mer"/"Into The Void" teaser five thousand times...
Anyway.
Personally, yeah, I wish the new album was six, long, lyric-laden examples of everything I love about Nine Inch Nails. I wish Ghosts had lyrics. I wish each and every score was replaced with a full-blown NIN LP. When people say "albums have instrumentals, what's the difference?", I want to tell them that it's basic math; on a full length album, you have more time and more music and maybe an instrumental or three serves as a nice chance to catch ones' breath, but on a tight package like Bad Witch, you want as much content to dig into as possible, you want stuff to unpack. Especially with this trilogy which may or may not tie in to everything Nine Inch Nails has ever done, you want more clues and connections and hidden lyrics.
Would this trilogy have worked better as a 16-track LP? Would we be gnashing our teeth so violently if Reznor had decided to go that route? Would there be so many closed threads on ETS? Would we have gotten the Quantum Cock Incident?
Who's to say?
People have opinions about Reznor and his work.
Others can agree or disagree with these opinions.
But, at the core of all this...it's Reznor's fucking work. If people have that many problems with what he does...no one's keeping them here.

Forgive my entire rant.

Saying that there's no content to be found in instrumental music is like saying there's no content to be found in a painting. Not everything has to be spelled out in words. Sometimes it's all about the mood, the feel of it, that provides the context for its placement within the larger framework of the album.

Yes, because at around 2am, I enjoy nothing more than logging onto ETS to read a thread about an album that hasn't come out yet and see people arguing about instrumentals for an album that no one has heard yet and repeating themselves in multiple posts over and over and over. I got shivers down my spine as I clicked that lock button and such an insane rush of endorphins when I saw the several people discussing the same thing in circles cry out when they saw that padlock. I LOVE THE POWER. /sarcasim

The thread was derailed and it's happened a few times now, hence the part 3.. The LP is out in 5 days, and I'd imagine we'll all start getting emails with download links at some point Thursday night. I think THIS thread just became circular. Lockdown of Random NIN Thoughts in 3, 2, 1...

Yes! I'm wondering that if we keep up the discussion here, this will also get shut down. How many threads can we lock up - bets, anyone?

Fuck it, lets just delete the whole internet. People talking about stuff has always ended badly, anyway.

Unfortunately, this is the Random NIN Thoughts thread, the destination for wayward NIN thoughts that don't have a place in any other thread... and since there isn't a thread for Bad Witch right now, you're in the right spot!

Until then, it's staying closed until the whole damn thing is out and we can discuss whether we hate it or not.

Well, my "power trip" comment has some twenty years (or however long ETS has been around now) of frustration behind it. I know all the NIN fans are here, yet when there's something new to discuss, small or large, I'll often have to jump through tens or hundreds of pages of this or the other "random" thread, because the standards for starting a separate thread are so damn high here. As I also stated I think it's mostly a good thing. Reddit always has a thread for whatever's going on, but they also have a million pictures of vinyl purchases or "DAE think Tronk Rosnir is hot?".

But instead of just facepalming my post because I called you out on being a powertripping mod, perhaps unfairly, you could address the absurdity of the fact that ETS, the biggest NIN community in the world, doesn't have a thread to discuss (as in speculate, dream, fantasize, or bitch about) the new NIN release, or even the brand new song most of us heard for the first time yesterday.

Look, all you crybabies can go back to Reddit or whatever other barely moderated shithole you came from if you really feel that way, but ETS has tried over many years to keep some sense of decorum and polite discourse in an online world where presidents can tweet whatever stupid-ass thing comes to mind. Do you really want this nice little place of ours to end up like every other bastion of social stupidity gracing cyberspace? I don't. Yeah, I've had my share of gripes with how things are run around here sometimes, but I'd rather it be a little strict than a rampant frontier of shitposting and clickbait.

That's fine, and I appreciate things are run differently on ETS. I haven't been massively active but I've dipped in and out enough over the years to know that this is the case. I don't agree with it, but fair enough. I think it's a free speech issue, and yes I think that's pretty serious; but that's my own thing and so I will go back to my barely moderated shithole I come from until we can actually talk about things here again :)

I was thinking about the Year Zero ARG earlier, specifically the way in which we were introduced to Survivalism. If I remember correctly, you could call a 1-800 number that would let you hear someone talking about being fed up with society and proving a point, then a snippet of Survivalism plays, then he opens fire on a crowd of people (I think it was a stadium?). The concept of that kind of casual mass shooting seemed so bizarre and subversive in 2007, who'd of thought it would be so common a decade later?

Saying that there's no content to be found in instrumental music is like saying there's no content to be found in a painting. Not everything has to be spelled out in words. Sometimes it's all about the mood, the feel of it, that provides the context for its placement within the larger framework of the album.100% with you. The Fragile without the instrumentals would be a lot less impactful. Same with TDS. I'm not saying there's no content to be found in instrumentals, in fact I think it's more challenging, and therefore more rewarding, for an artist to convey meaning without lyrics. I supposed I meant concrete, lyrical content.

While I totally understand that threads tend to get locked down when we circle around a single (sometimes minor) issue like vinyl vs CD, is it an EP or an LP, sadness about not hearing Trent's smooth-ass man-voice on every track ad nauseam, it's a shame we have to post about that seriously kick ass debut of Ahead of Ourselves last night in the live thread only. It sounds like they really matched the brutality of it I remember from the listening station. I hope they liked the reaction to it and that it becomes a regular on this new tour.

As much as I disagree with the decision to lock down that thread - at least for the reason listed -, I can appreciate a firm and (cant find that word now...) "followable" decision process. I spent, spend a lot of time on team liquid (sorry if it's advertising, but its just a gaming site), and while the moderation can resemble Nazi Germany at times, at least the same rules apply for everyone. Also, mods here and there let grown ass people to duke out their differences. You should've seen the hayday of discussion boards and the power tripping mods there. Self-conscious teens sitting in front of their pc 0-24, searching for arguments so they can use their power. Except on friends. Oh, and many of them turned out to be cheaters too.Tl;dr: ahead of ourselves is fucking amazing, i hope they release it officially, because i dont want to listen to bad live quality :(

AR and TR are incredibly good producers. So I'm looking forward to the songs on this release, vocals or not. In fact, I'm really curious, how in 2018 a NIN instrumental will sound, now that it's not specifically made for a film score.

I have been on ETS since November of 2002 when it was launched, and in those 16 years, I don't believe that thread standards have gotten so high that you can't determine whether to start a new thread about a NIN topic or not. I've stated my reasons in the Bad Witch thread (which is becoming the new Manson thread) why I locked it down until this coming Thursday: the thread has become a recycling of posts yelling at each other about why instrumentals are bad vs. good, which is similar to when we shut down the first two threads about the album in regards to the CD vs. Vinyl debate being repetitive and the EP vs. LP debate being SUPER repetitive. As an admin of this board, I can decide when to lock a thread down because it's been derailed past the point of the original topic and when it becomes closed off to NEW users and NEW posts because the same four people are recycling the same talking points over and over and over and over and over again.

No, I'm also waiting for Friday for the NIN topic/official channel to release all of the Bad Witch songs. I want to make sure I get the best quality of the songs and aren't getting myself into any shady sites (even though it's uploaded on Youtube which isn't shady at all). Also I'm pretty sure there will be an official music video for one of the songs on the album coming out Thursday/Friday so I want to listen to the songs with the video as well.

If you prefer to listen on vinyl, that makes sense. But just being a physical copy doesn’t make much difference imo. I say that as I’ve interacted with many who were waiting for a cd/download ON release date. Like hearing it on the date is different

if it was like NTAE where i knew i wouldn't have the vinyl in hand for months after the download became available, that'd be different (i listened to that as soon as it was released digitally, over and over). but since i haven't received a legit download yet (and i don't like to use leaks) and i'll have the vinyl in hand in two days, i'd much rather just wait until i can throw it on my turntable and give it all my attention.

Been listening a lot to Michael Jackson as of late since my fiancée is a fan. I knew MJ loved TDS, but I was still surprised to learn just how much some of his songs leaned towards industrial.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_G5DLYRz6M

I think the NIN inspiration in that one is very obvious. He even takes a stab at Trent's terraced dynamics with the piano breakdown. I'm guessing Trent wouldn't have touched him with a ten-foot pole in the mid-90s once the accusations started piling up, but if MJ hadn't passed in 2009, a collaboration would've fit very nicely into the Hesitation Marks sound.

I was thinking about that quote and I figured he was referring to the concept of the lyrics being more extreme, and not the music? Since we've dialed down from "full Matrix virtual reality" to "this is dirt and a broken computer chip and everything you believe in is bullshit." Basically, the virtual reality is in your head and your own illusions. But, yeah, I don't know, and also it'd be interesting to hear either way.

All this love for Childish Gambino/Donald Glover from Trent, I think I might explode if they ever did anything together.

I could really go for some stem tracks to remix from this trilogy.

Well, I want to throw money towards NIN, but the store is declining my debit card... Why even...

Trent has been talking about how pessimistic/nihilistic the last few releases have been but after listening to all of them I always feel a weird sense of confidence and optimism.

I thought it would be cool to have a proper list on Ranker for people to vote on their favorite NIN albums. So yeah, I took the time to do that.

Does it deserve its own topic?

This is an extremely odd comparison. But being one who grew up watching Professional Wrestling, after listening to all of NTAE/AV/BW, I feel like I did when the “old” Stone Cold returned to WWE. All that’s missing is Jim Ross’ commentary.

God damn I loved this era of professional wrestling. Sure, maybe the Invasion didn't turn out that great in retrospective ... but the fallout of the end of WCW and what the hell could happen next was so much fun.

Whenever I listen to Less Than, I want Trent to scream "IT'S COCKLIKE" at the end of each chorus. Thanks for ruining me, ETS.

So I guess YZ2 in 2022, during trump's second term?
I was sort of surprised that Trent didn't go into full on blatant protest mode with this trilogy and I'm kind of glad he didn't because what we got is so vital and nuanced.
But I've got to admit that I REALLY want something from Trent that is like an obvious scathing trump indictment.

David Fincher is slated to direct World War Z 2, so it’s very possible.

It trips me out how much I feel like Trent and I are often on the same wavelength. I've been interpreting NTAE as being about the fear of still just ultimately being a self destructive addict in the end.
I was careful to say that it's just MY interpretation, but then, I'll be damned, that IS what it's about. Edit: per recent interview
I know music is subjective and everyone interprets this shit differently, but if you've been a struggling addict, lemme tell you: NIN lyrics hit you in a certain frightening way.
And then, lately I've been having these frighteningly nihilistic thoughts (basically that NOTHING matters) and questioning my faith in god, but I just can't put it into words. And then, here comes Ahead of Ourselves.

Fucksake.

This band has hit me on such an insanely personal level, lyrically, since I was 12. Obviously we all probably feel that way, so this isn't very goddamn profound, but I think addicts will understand what I mean here.

I hate to say it but I would imagine that some of the people who NIN touched the most are dead or in prison. I certainly know that's the case with some of my closest friends who were NIN fanatics and are now six feet under.

Kinda impressive that despite all the variations, Talpas' original is still the true logo and simply gets edited by his successors

edit : wait a minute on the youtube channel the NTAE logo seems to be similar to HM but not exactly. Oh well.

I like the recent trend of cutting up the logo and using pieces of it in album and promotional art. Looks really cool, especially on merch.

Nice one.

There are actually a lot more than that, mostly the With Teeth logo variants on the 2005 tour lithographs designed by Rob Sheridan (e.g.: http://www.nin.wiki/images/7/7a/3_23-25_05_warm-ups.jpg)
And also there are the very different 2006 ones (don't remember the designer), like http://www.nin.wiki/images/f/f2/6_06_06-birmingham.jpg and http://www.nin.wiki/images/7/7c/6_14_06-camden.jpg

Full listing of these in a weird order: http://www.nin.wiki/Category:Tour_Lithos

There's also a new cropping of the NIN logo on the Europe 2018 tour shirt. You can see it here: https://twitter.com/ninlive/status/1010223630276550658?s=21
