Stern also ISN'T what @Helpmeiaminhell (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=5551) said he is anymore. He's a greedy, rich, spoiled, neurotic & out of touch feeble old man. He has no connection to his audience or regular people anymore. He barely works, discusses topics at length that his target audience doesnt care about (gay humor with two of his staff, The Bachelor, Hamptons cocktail parties, his wife's innane charity work) & then does these supposedly great long form interviews with celebs where he "gets in really deep" with them. It's total bullshit and not accurate anymore, but they promote that image as if it's still reality. Nevermind interviewing a true musician like Trent. It would go terribly, and Trent has no need for Howard. Fuck that piece of shit. He has a great staff though...lot of good ,people work on that show..Gary especially. In fact one of the kids I mentor just got hired there.

Won't debate that Stern has his flaws, but I actually think that he could do a good job with TR.

i was listening to the audio capture of the Panorama show today and some of the songs sounded sped-up to me. it was weird. but i checked them against their studio versions and i was wrong.

also, the live version of the farewell mix of "i can't give everything away" is immensely powerful. i cried my eyes out in the car when bowie's voice came in with trent's. so beautiful.

That Bowie cover and the way that the audience behaved was just magical. A lot of people around me were softly singing and doing their best not to tear others away from the moment. I'm convinced Trent was thinking of David again during Hurt, and it was one of the best performances of the song that I have ever heard.

NIN fan groups on Facebook have made me appreciate this place MUCH more.

I was banned from one just for politely pointing out that a photo an admin labeled "Self Destruct tour" was actually a Fragility era tour photo. There was no question about it. Their response was something like "WE DON"T NEED YOUR NEGATIVITY HERE!!111!!!" and then I was banned before I could even reply.

So according to what Trent said in the radio interviews, he'll now be back in the studio focusing on the third EP. He'll finish out the next two shows september/october and I'm guessing he'll set his sights on the album release and subsequent touring for next year. Should be an exciting next few months!

On the stream, Trent was visibly smiling during the Bowie cover and the camera had a panned out shot often to show the lights that looked almost like a nod to Heaven itself. The whole stream was amazing because it was clear Trent teamed up with the producers (on stage camera, no watermark) to put his vision out there.

I also wish that they would play The Frail into The Wretched into The Fragile live so we can hear that piano motif return in The Fragile's bridge guitar solo. They really do feel like a trilogy in a way and without The Fragile it feels incomplete.

At a couple of shows in Europe 2007 they played all three tracks, then a few times again in 2009. ONLY ONCE (http://nintourhistory.com/concert.php?concertid=831) have all three been played back-to-back-to-back, however: at NIN's only show (so far) in Singapore.

Fairly good bar trivia question, that.

If every show they ever did for the rest of time had this, I would be completely okay with that. Even better if it was March of the Pigs>Piggy>The Frail>The Wretched>The Fragile. That should be a staple to the NIN live show. Shuffle up everything else but make that the core of the show after the first two or three songs.

I think it would be sick if all 3 EP's made a coherent album when mixed together as well as songs from With Teeth/Year Zero/Hesitation Marks being mixed in to make the Bleedthrough concept be a really epic thing.

So once the 3rd EP drops, I plan on making a thread asking people to list in order their favorite NIN songs. I will then put them all in a spreadsheet. I think it will be pretty cool to see everyones lists.

I don't really get the point of it. I'm not trying to knock the idea but I can't think of any reason to do this other than boredom.

For some reason that reminds me of....

In college, I had this idea for a project that would show all the common lyrical themes on all the nin records. You could search for "nothing" and every song where he says the word nothing would come up. I never made it happen and I still think it would be fun but really, what's the point? Ha - I actually got something which does that 99% complete shortly after Hesitation Marks was released, but never got around to putting the finishing touches on the thing. Was having some trouble coming up with a UI for searching which wasn't so obtuse, and needed to go through and verify all the lyrics that I'd more or less blindly imported.

I think I'd also wanted to track down the proper copyright status for the lyrics in question and include that in there before officially putting the thing live somewhere. Perhaps mentioning it here will kick me in gear to dust this off and put it online.

It will be for you and everyone who participates. I'm sure lots of folks will engage you with your idea. This is totally the board to do it. Like I said in my post I'm not trying to knock it or discourage you from doing it. I just think there's no way to rank the songs. Sure some are better than others but pitting one favorite against another isn't in my interests. But I do think there are people here who want to discuss it. Have fun when you do finally make it happen. [emoji41]

My suggestion if you go through with this is to put together a web form which auto-submits to a database in the first place, btw. It'll save you a ton of work. I assume you can do that via google docs/forms/spreadsheets/whatever pretty easily. Make sure you've got the songs selected via dropdown or you'll be spending your whole life correcting typos.

Also, if you DO do this, it may be informative to use the method that the avclub uses for their staff "best of" lists at the end of the year - each person gets N points to assign to tracks however they wish. That way you'd have some weighting on a per-person basis. I think the av club gives everyone 100 points?

I think it'd be interesting to see how the data from ETS members compares to the wider public, though I don't know how easily you'd get non-ETS responses.

Also, this could be used as a more scientific basis for that "unpopular NIN opinions" thread on here. You'd have some hard numbers as to how unpopular your song choice opinions are! Might be fun to do a "least favorite" poll as well, though I suppose that'd just open up ragefests.

There's been this "Survivor" style thing going in reddit for a while. They take an album and every few days vote off one song until the supposed "best" song is left for each album. I've contributed when I catch the polls and mostly I'd say I agree with the opinion of the masses (which is likely 30-50 people on /r/nin (http://www.reddit.com/r/nin)).

As someone who loves NIN and statistics, I'm all about this.

I saw something like this on Litany (the Skinny Puppy forum) several years ago called Last Track Standing and the results were VERY interesting. I tend to favor the deeper cuts, that never get talked about, never played live... A shocking amount of those songs were the winners. It was really cool to watch unfold.

Too bad And All The Could Have Been live DVD couldn't be reissued in better quality. I'm sure the original source video is better quality. I wonder if it could possibly get an HD re-release.

And speaking of the track And All That Could Have Been itself, as well as the other Still tracks, I wish we could get a 24 bit remaster. I hope there is a second Fragile Deviation because from the sounds of it, it seemed like Trent had more music than the several instrumentals we got.

I'd love a huge super deluxe CD package with The Fragile original album remastered, the Deviation 1 instrumentals, another disc of Still and additional material, and a CD and HD Blu-ray reissue of the And All That Could Have Been live release. So 6 CDs and Blu-ray. It's doable. I wish bands would stop including DVD as a standard in deluxe packages. I think most folk moved on to Blu-ray by now. Amon Tobin did something interesting for his ISAM Live DVD. The DVD included an HD file that you could pull off to watch in better quality. So you got the best of both worlds on a single DVD.

But if anything, the song And All That Could Have Been needs a 24 bit remaster... for real.

It'll be awesome if after the albums, Trent reissued all of the singles. Or at least made packages for each album that brings all of the singles' b-sides/remixes together. The Downward Spiral could definitely have an awesome remix compilation album, if you took all of the Further Down The Spiral remixes and combined them with the Closer and March Of The Pigs singles plus any b-sides like Burn and Dead Souls.

There's so much great non-album material, I hope it gets some love as well and not just the albums.

I don't think the original source video for AATCHB is any better, because it was filmed using consumer grade mini DV cameras. In fact, there's some artifacting here and there that could potentially look even worse in an HD presentation. It would be great to have a Blu-ray version so that it's all on one disc with both the DTS and Dolby sound (and maybe some new extras, too) but the picture quality will most likely never improve.

Too bad AATCHB is just riddled with continuity errors. I mean...little shit like "oops he's on the microphone with one tape spike and two shots later he's on the mic with two tape spikes, even though he never changed mics" is not a problem for me. But "oh hey, indoor concert - wait, no outdoors! - jk we're back inside again" kind of ruins the experience for me. The visuals for the tour and the overall direction of the VHS/DVD are great, but the lack of continuity makes it really distracting for me. I know some people don't notice or aren't bothered by that type of thing, but I have a hard time staying focused when things keep changing.

my main issue with AATCHB as i've said before is the horrible audio artifacting on the CD release. how hard would it have been to properly dither the audio so that it hadn't happened?

AATCHB reissue can still be a thing, video quality isn't the only thing that can be improved.
They can patch the concert with some alternate shots/angles, add some missing songs from the tour (Somewhat Damaged, GDML, Even Deeper, The Fragile, I'm sure at least some of this was played at the filmed shows), add complete live footage for TDTWWA, throw in some rehearsal stuff.
I hope that one day they'll release an HQ update of that Somewhat Damaged clip from 1.0 tour, the one that's only available in shitty .mov quality.

I would like a new deluxe edition of AATCHB of not just the entire concert film remastered but more alternate footage, the entire 1.0 tour special from MTV and the 2.0 tour from MTV2 plus videos from The Fragile era and a new documentary about that whole period of making The Fragile to the release of AATCHB with interviews from Trent, Robin, Danny, Charlie, and others involved in that tour.

Ok, I will bet. This is only my opinion after listen/analyze lyrics. I don't think AV is a YZ prequel. I know a NIN happy ending is very rare, but the third EP will be about a revolution (Trent uses that word sometimes) and surely a victory, and it will sound like WT or a WT-YZ mix. The relationship with YZ will be simple: YZ (2022) is the imaginative reference of the revolution (remember the presence is something abstract), if they don't win against the hegemonic power, YZ will be come true.

two random thoughts:
1) I've been mainly listening to the new stuff on my commute (i.e., less than ideal). I had a chance to listen through w/ some nice headphones in a quiet room over the weekend and WOW. there is a LOT more compositional density to the new stuff than I had been thinking. really really well composed stuff -- not at all the surface level stuff I had sort of been thinking it was.
2) someone on here recently made a post to the effect of "hey, remember discipline? it's a great song." and... yeah, fuck -- whoever you were, you were SO RIGHT. it's SO FUCKING GOOD. been my jam the last few days. that's another one that I think I had sort of shoved into the "pretty surface level" and it is -- but there's also a real powerful economy to the songwriting.

I would just love it if a version of AATCHB was released that had the easter eggs available from menus instead of requiring DVD remote cheat codes. I can't even remember the last time I watched a DVD using an old school remote.

Beside You In Time is such a perfect song, the build of it with the steady percussion growing into the climax at the end is one of my favorite examples of Trent's build and release approach to compositions and is a great example of layering effectively rather than having too much shit going on at once. By the end every single distinct element is combining to create something more, and it's beautiful.

Yeah, not sure I can much of a connection there, but on the other hand it is a great song, and I wouldn't be too surprised if it has had a few plays in the Reznor household at some point over the years.

I really like AATCHB just the way it is . The continuity issues never really bothered me, it presents a glimpse of the tour as a whole rather than a particular show. Also any sound issues or not being HD and everything, kinda reflects the chaos and imperfection of what a nin show was back then. I did always hate having to change discs mid performance though, not sure why that was necessary .

Thanks to With Teeth, I have brushed my teeth with both the album and the actual song in mind, mostly to the rhythm of "[AWITHA_TEETHA]". Even the album cover makes me think of any mint or mint flavored, right up there with toothpaste and mouthwash.

It also made me wonder about Nine Inch Nails fans that were also dentists. (Although, it has also lead me to think about the mechanical type of teeth in gears as well.)

It was necessary due to the capacity limitations of the DVD as a medium. That release predates dual-layer DVDs, which would have allowed for it to be on a single disc. I'd REALLY love for them to re-release all of the tour documentaries like what they're doing with the catalog on vinyl. Image if they surprised us with a remastered Closure, AATCHB, BYIT, and finally released Tension on blu-ray. If he's worried about not selling enough, they could make it a limited edition box set just for the fans. I'd be first in line with credit card in hand.

I remember that the first time i saw AATCHB was at a Miami restaurant that converted into a club at some event called Poplife.

Anyways, they projected the show and felt like you were in a theater. there was a group there watching and as soon as Complication ended and the break happened, it was like a punch to the groups gut and everyone was smiling like holy crap that was good... and then the next disc went in and everyone was sucked back in... it was a cool experience. But for repeat viewings, it never had that same feeling. but to people i would show it to for the first time, i think that initial shock does affect them the same way. I tended to set a theater mood when i'd show it.

I'd really love to hear more YZ live. I haven't heard "Me, I'm Not" or "Vessel" and I would love those. "Survivalism" is great, but it's not the best. "The Great Destroyer" would be a lot cooler if they went off script a bit during the breakdown and Atticus really just smashed some crazy glitchcore out, instead of generally copying the album sound. "In This Twilight" into "Zero-Sum" would be a really cool closer. I don't think "Hurt" should be cut, but it could come before those two.

That's not true. The first dual-layer DVD was Terminator 2, released on Oct. 22, 1997. By 2002, it was super mature, and every Hollywood movie release was dual-layer.

The point is moot anyway, because AATCHB uses dual-layer discs. I looked at it, and Disc 1 uses about 5 GiB, and Disc 2 is about 5.8 GiB. They're using a really high bitrate on the main video stream, about 9.8 Mbps. That's really close to the DVD-Video spec maximum of 10.08 Mbps. And frankly, probably unnecessary. The DVD authoring industry standard is usually to max out at about 8 Mbps. If they had just cut the bitrate about 20%, which would have made it more in-line with usual industry standards, the whole project could have fit on a single 8.5 GiB dual-layer disc, and there probably wouldn't have been any visible quality loss.

Alternatively, as it is authored, they could have fit the entire main feature on disc one, and put all the bonus content on disc 2, but then they couldn't have been cutesy and hidden the bonus video as easter eggs.

tl;dr I think poor authoring decisions were made.

While I have been used to waiting for long periods of time before each Nine Inch Nails release, this trilogy has me a bit more hyped up than usual. It can't seem to arrive any sooner. However, in spite of that, I'm also sometimes more interested in how the releases hold up afterwards, as much as I like to speculate as much as the next NIN fan. For instance, I know without the journey/process, we wouldn't have the destination/results, but the aftermath of things in general sometimes seemed to interest me much more. (Granted, it's also easy to say that once it's out there/comes to fruition and actually exists.)

Anyway, I just want to see how the trilogy will end up and hold up in the 2020s. Either way, it's a great way for NIN to end this decade, as well as wrapping up almost 30 years since Pretty Hate Machine came out. :)

(That, and I think I've been coming up with imaginary random set-lists of songs from Not The Actual Events and Add Violence *And whatever the third EP might be.* being performed side by side with songs from Pretty Hate Machine, Broken and The Downward Spiral, which I consider to be the classic trilogy.)

Oh, and while I can see Disappointed being used to refer to the delays and debacles of Firebrand/Sandbag deliveries, the lyric that really kept coming to mind was from Last's, "I know what's coming to me is never going to arrive." :p

I'm from the 90's, and agreed with alot of Reznor's complaints. No, I don't get Drake. I get non-rock forms of music just fine. Drake's insistence on being a regular dude and establishing this with basic, boring music (not to be confused with simple, beautiful music) frustrates me. Fuck, I was within earshot of his Coachella show, it was the emperor's clothes. I don't want art to explore his themes; conspicuous consumption, hubris, false modesty. There is a real difference in 90's dwellers' seeking visceral experience and how transcendence is found, now.

Writer of the article sounds like a bit of a wank. Trent's answers sounded pretty balanced in that interview. He clearly stated he understood both sides of the coin, but in this day and age a balanced opinion isn't exactly something people can relate to, it seems, since most everyone thinks you either have to completely love something or outright hate it.

It's all about clickbait because journalism is in a worse state than music so they parcel up the interview with inflammatory headlines to get hits.

Tyson
08-12-2017, 03:03 AM
Yeah, but the rest of the article was just as inflammatory as the headline. The whole thing just seemed like a young person not liking something an older person said, because they're old and they should "get with the times." Even though, from how I understood it, Trent was saying there was something special about the way people consumed music back in the day that a lot of younger people don't get to experience because of they way the world works now, and he would like to try to give people that experience. Which is why I assume he said this:

DIGITAL FORMATS AND STREAMING ARE GREAT AND CERTAINLY CONVENIENT, BUT THE IDEAL WAY I’D HOPE A LISTENER EXPERIENCE MY MUSIC IS TO GRAB A GREAT SET OF HEADPHONES, SIT WITH THE VINYL, DROP THE NEEDLE, HOLD THE JACKET IN YOUR HANDS LOOKING AT THE ARTWORK (WITH YOUR FUCKING PHONE TURNED OFF) AND GO ON A JOURNEY WITH ME.
-TRENT REZNOR

But, naturally, some people are looking to be offended by the least little thing, so they take it as an insult rather than an older person trying to share something they think might be an enjoyable experience.

The reissues have got me thinking of this lately: it's kind of surprising how little Interscope has done to take advantage of owning the rights to most of the NIN catalogue. Setting aside the 2008 TDS vinyl reissue and the Lights in the Sky concert film debacle, it really seems like they have zero interest in doing anything with NIN, like compiling a greatest hits album on their own and shitting that out. I know they tried and that Trent wrote Everything and Satellite for that project, but once those two songs led to HM it seems like they just gave up on putting a greatest hits out. And now they seem to be assisting in the vinyl reissues, even just by letting Trent make them. Just kind of interesting considering how contentious Trent's relationship was with them for so long.

Maybe the new management reached out to him, or he was more willing to work with them on projects like the reissues. There was a guy selling shirts outside after the Bakersfield show. I walked up and quite a few people were getting their wallets out and counting money, so I looked at the shirt more closely and it said "NINE IN NAILS" on the back. I told the people and they laughed, thanked me, and walked off. Dude selling the shirts first played dumb like "Oh wow, that's weird. I dunno man, typo I guess." and then once all his customers walked away, he gave me quite the death glare lmao.

I might not actually purchase one of these, but I think that printing and the rest goes along with the more hip hop influenced style of the line, plus that's obviously the audience they're going for.

Didn't know if this belongs here or the Trump YZ thread.

For years, I've been contemplating writing up a story directly related to Year Zero. You could probably call it fanfiction; you might even call it a spec script. But now I'm feeling like, well, we're going to be living all of it soon enough anyway.

I've been listening to Genesis's Invisible Touch again recently, and I finally notice a straaange similarity between "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" and "Sanctified." Had late-80s/early-90s TR ever mentioned Genesis/Phil Collins as one of his influences besides the usual suspects (New Wave, industrial, etc.)? You can almost hum the "Sanctified" bass and sing the verses to the song over it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MWe2_WYcEs

I usually cut an "H" shape into the shrinkwrap from the back. All the way across the center back of the wrap, then a small cut up and down on both sides. This allows you to still use the shrinkwrap without the normal pressure.

Alternately, you can cut across the center back of the wrap, and then put a slice in all four corners. I prefer the "H" shape because it's easier to get the vinyl in/out.

First of, I find the new material absolutely stunning. However, to get a proper grip on them (and I'm not talking digital) is another story, as you and plenty others mentioned. Now this is turly random.

In one of my many 'strange' dreams i was part of an 80s/90s movie wherein a bunch of teens are killed in a remote location by witches (stay with me).
I escaped by flying away keeping low to the ground so as not to be noticed but everyone else was killed.
Now in order to bring them back i had to figure out the truth of death, which is that the afterlife is a combination of 2 records you last listened to. Once i realized this i figured out i was the one who died, not the others, and was here to warn everyone. But not before the last record i listened to, Deviations, had come back to kill me. Seriously the record had half a head with empty white eyes and long, uneven teeth it used to constantly rip into me and anyone who got close...then i woke up.

...i look at my Deviations LP rather differently now.

With all due respect, I don't think it has anything to do with aesthetic choices. He remembers what state of mind he was in and can probably remember or at least tell by watching himself what he felt like back then and how fucked up he was. It's just not enjoyable to see video footage of yourself from the worst period of your life. I wouldn't say disowning as much as not wanting to revisit the past and be reminded of that time in his life.

With all due respect, I don't think it has anything to do with aesthetic choices. He remembers what state of mind he was in and can probably remember or at least tell by watching himself what he felt like back then and how fucked up he was. It's just not enjoyable to see video footage of yourself from the worst period of your life. I wouldn't say disowning as much as not wanting to revisit the past and be reminded of that time in his life.

well yes, also, but that we don't know for sure. we know, but do we *know*? :D

Random nin thought while stoned: has the word MONEY been used in a nine inch nails song since head like a hole? With all the call backs lately, I think he should get some on part 3.

It has not! http://apocalyptech.com/ninlyrics/index.php?text=money&min_words=&max_words=&min_albums=&max_albums=&min_songs=2&max_songs=&albums_restrict=on

If it's not him then he's going to great lengths to play the imposter. There's a lot of detail in there, some of which I had never read before, so it seems like something you could check on.

So, I made an interesting discovery today. The "DJ Edit" of Wish on Demos & Remixes is not the "No Bad Words Mix" which is the US radio edit. Rather, it is the "Radio Edit" which is longer, censored differently, and exclusive to UK promo vinyl.

That means tracks 10-12 on Demos & Remixes are all UK exclusive. As such, it's not unreasonable to hypothesize that the compiler of the bootleg lives in the U.K. Following that train of thought, I think it's possible that the leaked demos from tracks 1-5 came from the London sessions at Blackwing Studios with John Fryer, from someone who had access to them there.

I was looking over my TDS Definitive Edition today, and it made me realize something that made me feel really dumb.

For the longest time, I thought that the text on the outer sleeve of TDS (I have the BMG edition (http://nincatalog.com/the-downward-spiral/the-downward-spiral-us-cd-292/)) was purple. A very dark purple. I thought it was an interesting touch, and a complement to the blue text in the booklet - two colors that you might not expect to be associated with an album like TDS.

But now that I'm looking at the DE, I realized that it's always been just...brown. Something about the way the original is printed made it look purplish to me and I just accepted that, until today. Weird.

There actually is a variant with purple text (if I remember correctly) that is the Dutch version of TDS on vinyl.

Really enjoying the Panorama webcast today; 'Less Than' is the mashing of 'Copy' and 'Hand that Feeds.' Ground-breaking it is not but frankly a band has to bring the bangers. This is kind of similarity is fine from my critical perspective as long as tracks like 'This isn't the Place' explore odd timing and keyboard textures.

YouTube commenters point out that Ross is adding details to things like the coda of 'Pigs.' Something sounding fresher, this must be it. Also a subtle surprise- the Closer piano coda with the meek, falsetto chorus is new and nicely done. I saw 'Copy' during the Tension Tour, this version has muscular drum fills, different delays on the vocal and lacks for sleekness, but its now rock and not minimal techno. Still think single edits of this one and 'Low' could've been radio hits.

'Gave Up' is ending and the band is getting free with the noise. Being a viewer of hundreds of noise shows and auxillary (Sp) player in a couple acts, I fully support NIN extending this kind of coda for minutes more.

Gorgeous cover of Bowie. Seems like 'Lovers' will replace 'Find my Way' as the weirdly IDM-influenced ballad. Wish (ahem) that a different dirge would replace 'Reptile,' never been a fan. 'She's Gone Away' would sound great in its place. Hopefully I will experience 'Burning Bright' on an amphitheater scale soundsystem someday, its an arena rock song congealed in Sludge metal (a la the Body). I find it very uplifting.

Now I'm onto this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4sP1CTuIjs

In retrospect, this tour seems legendary. However at the time it got a lukewarm reception yeah? I tried to round-up some friends to make an 8-hour round trip to St. Louis, on a school night no less, no takers. But wow that show would've set teen SarahConnor on a different path I'm sure. Too bad the tee shirts on eBay are pretty grim looking or else I'd buy one.

ok, you're the second person i've seen mention an "odd timing" aspect to "this isn't the place" and i'm really confused because that song is in straight 3/4 time. is there something i'm missing, or are y'all hallucinating? :p

I think they're talking about the 3/4 against 6/8 that becomes prominent at about 1:11 through 1:58, and then returns again later. (The song is 6/8, btw, not 3/4.)

differentiating between 3/4 and 6/8 time is all about semantics, though, and more about personal perception.

No, it's not simply multiplying by 2, and it's not about your feelings. This is music theory, and those two time signatures have different rhythms. If you don't know what the difference is, watch this:

welp, guess my guitar teacher in high school explained that to me backwards because i've gone the last 15 years thinking it was the opposite. i think the problem is also that, when i record in protools, whether i'm doing 3/4 or 6/8 time, i always set the meter at 3/4 so my measures aren't super long (makes it easier to edit later, if necessary). sorry for throwing misinformation out there and thanks for clearing that up for me.

Just keep in the mind that the rips are OK, but the record player was the wrong speed (too slow). I forget exactly how much I had to speed them up (4-5%?) but you can gauge it by ear, comparing to the album version, if you have a good ear for pitch.
