When I looked up "I used to be somebody." on Google, there were several pictures that showed ghosts saying that exact quote. It got me to look at the end of the Down In It video with those lyrics in that type of context, as well as reminding me about Ghosts I-IV and the references to ghosts in Non-Entity. (As well as death being a state of non-entity.) There's also a bunch of them out there, so I thought of just picking this one for now.

Oh, and this certainly is one of those NIN moments that never got old to me. (I suppose it's also because it takes me back to those memories of being amused and thrilled at also sometimes getting away with saying fuck as a child and a teenager.)

A group of friends and I drove down to Blossom Music Center amphitheater to see the Black Celebration tour. DM was one of our favorite bands and the Black Celebration record took my love for them to a new level.

I’ve thought about that night a lot over the years. It was a perfect summer night and I was in exactly the right place I was supposed to be. The music, the energy, the audience, the connection… it was spiritual and truly magic. I left that show grateful, humbled, energized, focused, and in awe of how powerful and transformative music can be… and I started writing what would eventually become Pretty Hate Machine.
Many times, particularly when we’re playing an amphitheater, I’ll think of that show while I’m onstage and hope someone in the audience is in the midst of a perfect summer night feeling how DM made me feel so many years ago.

After reading this, I really wish I had the means to talk to Trent, just for a minute. What he described basically happened to me during the Lights in the Sky tour, and I give it a large amount of credit for pushing me into the touring career I have now. I've even found myself gigging in a number of the same venues I saw NIN at, and I pause to think about how where I was once a fan, I'm now making a living. He was a hell of an inspiration when it came to getting off my ass, fighting through my mental blocks, and getting shit done. I would love to simply say thank you to him in person. And I'm sure that among this group, I'm not alone in feeling that way.

Has anyone been to a NIN show with seating, where entire sections people actually sat down for the whole show? I'm not talking about nosebleeds either. Saw APC last weekend and getting yelled at for standing up, then going through the whole show sitting pretty much ruined the concert for me.

Yeah, I don't count those special one off shows though. Strictly a NIN show in a large venue.

GF and me stood up right when the lights went down. Heard "sit down in front!" We weren't assholes or anything like that, we obliged obviously. Didn't make for a fun concert experience however. This was at Hollywood Bowl in case anyone's wondering.

I vividly remember watching somebody sitting on their phone looking at Facebook in the row in front of me during March of the Pigs on that Soundgarden tour. I was astounded.

NIN doesn't do the type of show that suits seats unless if it's something like those Bridge School shows but those are pretty atypical and unique things -- if we had a largely acoustic/orchestral tour (which I'd love) it'd have every reason to be in a seated theatre environment, but for the most part if we're talking the typical arrangement and presentation of this band then seats are mostly an impediment to the overall experience. I never want shitty hot summer plastic kicking into the backs of my legs during Somewhat Damaged again.

I get that perspective but there's a lot of disabled or physically restricted NIN fans who don't want to be miles from the stage either - I've seen NIN seated and standing, all are awesome. Seated was O2 Arena in 09, it's mixed seating and GA for that kinda show

kleiner
05-13-2017, 07:21 PM
Obviously I'm all for reserved seating for people who can't stand but hate it when shows have no proper GA section -- that Soundgarden tour was filled with shows where the GA was a seated area and it was a shame. I remember missing the pit for Tension and promising myself I'd be in it for their next tour, and then there wasn't one. It was lame.

Last week was the first "rock" show I attended where a vast majority of the seated sections had people actually sitting in their seats. Understood about the handicapped rows, and you'll get some people who aren't into it or just want to sit down but that's fairly random in my experiences.

Saw Alice Cooper in WV a couple weeks ago in a seated theatre, everyone I saw was standing for that one.

We're getting old!

I remember how PISSED everyone was when the wording for the NJ show implied there would be a normal open GA pit and we were assigned random seats. Like, doesn't matter if you got pre-sale or one of the special sales or normal ticketmaster or bought tickets at the venue, all the GA was seats and our tickets were randomly assigned (there were even people who bought a few together and were not seated together).
I really hope no proper NIN tour is ever full seated GA ever again, that was a really sucky experience.

GA seating is the worst thing (though one of my favourite London venues has it)
Idk, not everyone wants a pit, not everyone wants to stand for 4 hours+, and as the band sneaks up on the 30th anniversary I wonder how many fans might actually prefer a little rest

I'm a guy who likes to sit during live shows and just experience things. I can rock out just as much seating as I can standing so it makes no difference to me. I'm not a fan of moshing but I totally understand the need to just run around like an uncaged beast during March of the Pigs.

What is the point of standing at an APC show? I love the first album and the second album was good, but they are one of the most boring live bands of all time.

NIN is 1,000,000 (pun) times better of a live band, so standing is actually an option.

I never was at APC show, but I was once at a concert where the pre-show music was just APC's 13th Step played from start to finish. Pretty much everyone who came early just stood uninterested, while I was rocking out with air drumming and miming to lyrics.
There are many ways to enjoy the show while standing other than moshing. APC is not that slow/quiet band to make me want take seats.

The show at Perth Arena in 2014, I was in the seating area which was still pretty damn close, and raised a decent amount too so the view wasn't obstructed or anything. Crowds really set off my anxiety so the idea of standing in GA surrounded and getting jostled around by people was a bit overwhelming. Still enjoyed the show immensely even though I was seated.

I've stood at a Pearl Jam concert with seats in the nose bleeds, and they were 1,000,000 (no pun intended) times more boring than APC. If people sat for an entire APC set I can see them sitting for A LOT of NIN material.

I realize APC isn't a hard core thrash metal band, but they aren't Kenny G either.

Either way, standing at shows all depends on the crowd around you and the song being played. There have been times I’ve wanted to stand at big shows because I was excited, but if everyone around me is sitting down and I can still see…I sat down as a courtesy to the person behind me. If the person in front of me is standing, I’ve told people yelling at me to sit down to yell at that guy first!!

Sorry that I snapped about APC…I’m so turned off by anything sociopath-MJK related at this point that the only money he’s getting from me going forward is when I buy the next Tool album in 2025. He does nothing but treat his fans like shit, but has no problem milking them for cash playing the same set lists with a band(s) he won’t talk about. Aenima Tour in a relatively small club was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, but now he only stands at the front of the stage for that overrated Poopcifer project. I guess that original excuse of camera flash bothering him doesn't apply when it's his solo project and he's getting all the attention. Seeing Tool nowadays is the same set list as the last 10 years, but at least you get to watch Danny Carey drum his ass off. Seeing APC means watching…Billy Howerdale and James Iha stand there? Forget sitting...that would make me lay on the floor!!

Give me Kenny G!! ;)

That's one of the things I've always kept noticing with NIN. Aside from the actual music itself, just about every single major release has a special/unique memory/experience attached to it, good, bad and all in between. It's yet another thing that has made the NIN ride so worthwhile.

I get the sense that next week will be a big week in the world of nin.

- With vinyl releases and more festival announcements coming, plus for whatever reason, I'm hopeful for proper tour dates. Who knows, maybe we will even get new album info with the 10th anniversary of year zero being Monday (I'm thinking there is a year zero tie in with the next album) - probably a stretch, but a random thought.

Well, the only thing that came to fruition from that was the riot fest announcement.

Here's to hoping next week with twin peaks and possibly the vinyls coming out that there will be a major uptick in nin activity (like some proper tour dates announced).

Don't know if this counts as a strictly random Nine Inch Nails thought but fuck it.

I hope beyond hope that someday soon there will be new How To Destroy Angels. It was criminally underrated and I fear that TR might be under the impression that there's just not enough interest to justify the cost of composing, recording, and releasing any more of it. But maybe someday they'll release more. If you believe in it. Keep believing it.

Posted this over in the Twin Peaks thread, too

Though the only reason I think that soundtrack got so much attention at the time was because Trent's first new song in three years was on it.

That being said, it's still an excellent collection of music when taken as a whole. The Smashing Pumpkins song on it is still one of my favorite songs by them ever..

Pretty sure that's a reference to Robin when Aaron North was named the NIN guitarist.

EDIT: here's Meathead on it, this is the only place I've heard it so not sure if that was an actual TR quote. Gonna have to read down some:

Yeah, I remember being rather surprised by that statement as well, but I think that it comes off sounding more harsh than it was intended, really. The "[pissing] on Robin's shoes and [kicking] them out the door where they belong" bit stands out as being rather aggressive, but it's bookended by stuff like "looking for someone to fill [his] shoes," and calling his time with Robin "a great chapter." I think the pissing on shoes was more just about Aaron's general fuck-everything attitude while playing, and an indication of intentionally severing ties with the past, rather than an attack on Robin. I too am glad that it didn't cause a rift! I suspect that their parting of ways was actually quite amicable behind the scenes.

I suppose I kept forgetting it, because I hardly ever thought about it, but it sometimes seems like certain Nine Inch Nails lyrics and moments can be also interpreted as passive-aggressiveness and sarcasm. (Kind of like in a "All right, just pound a stake in my heart some more, why don't you!?" or "Ah, I feel like a million bucks. Couldn't get any better than this. Don't mind the knives in my back." type of way.)

It makes even more sense now that it has occurred to me, because it's very much possible to have those traits sometimes mix in with emotions such as rage, emptiness and misery, or themes such as addiction and ego. It certainly adds more dimensions than I've previously considered or even known to my listening experience so far, while also giving me some dark humor to boot. (Which I'm sure was implied in some of his videos too.)

Some examples I could think of for now would be Head Like A Hole, Ringfinger, Wish and Happiness in Slavery. I'm also feeling a lot of it in Burning Bright (Field on Fire) as far as his most recent work goes. I'm sure that's also yet another reason as to why I love that song so much as it's also one of the NIN songs that has me feeling multiple emotions at once. Break through the surface and breath. Indeed.

I just wanted to get that out there before I forget about it again.

After slamming the album on Twitter (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/trent-reznor-uses-twitter-to-slam-chris-cornells-scream-20090312), Reznor told Rolling Stone he “immediately regretted” doing so.

Uh huh. Regretted it so much, he made that hilarious Strobe Light parody a month later ( http://www.nin.wiki/Strobe_Light )

Ahead of NIN’s 2014 tour (http://www.spin.com/2014/03/soundgarden-nine-inch-nails-tour-collaboration-trent-reznor-chris-cornell-feud/) with Soundgarden, Reznor said he emailed Cornell to apologize. “He was very cool and generous about it – ‘It’s the past, fuck it. Let’s go on,’” he said. “The Chris I met on that tour was a gentleman that completely had his shit together.”

I can't wait for 'Scream' to get that inevitable vinyl release in the next few years, so we can see critics and musicians alike suddenly praising it for being a daring experimental excursion that was far ahead of its time..

I got the "Feel The Pain" 1995 soundboard bootleg in the mail today: https://www.discogs.com/Nine-Inch-Nails-Feel-The-Pain/release/1412249

This was the second NIN show I ever saw, preceded by the show in Hershey five days prior (found on the 'Monsters In Space" boot: https://www.discogs.com/Nine-Inch-Nails-Monsters-In-Space/release/1413833)

Feel The Pain is the same as the Children of the Night bootleg, but with way better packaging, including an 8-page booklet of photos and tour dates. These were the first two "real" concerts I ever attended and I had to do hilariously shitty work for my parents for months afterwards just so I could go. Still worth it though; seeing and hearing that version of 'Hurt' with Bowie was absolutely soul-consuming and was the closest thing to an out of body experience I've ever known..

Or Audioslave for that matter....Critics MASSACRED everything Cornell has done post 1996...Audioslave got horrific reviews (esp their 2nd and 3rd albums) and his 2007 solo album Carry On got almost as bad reviews as Scream..now everything will be regarded as unappreciated works of genius....Apparently sales and streams of Cornell albums are up 550% this week....550%!!!

It's entirely possible that I'm missing something due to my ignorance of Cornell's solo material (I'm most familiar with his Soundgarden output), but what does Strobe Light have to do with him? The only thing I see is the "PRODUCED BY TIMBALAND" mention, which seems more like a dig on Timbaland (I am aware that he produced Scream, though) than anything.

“PLEASE”
It sounds like one of the most straightforward songs on the record, but look a little closer and there’s a great deal of detail in this seemingly simple song. The themes of an internal void, of insatiability, of want or desire unfulfilled are reaffirmed here. If you can, get your hands on “Please + Appendage,” which appears in the special edition and originally appeared on the vinyl pressing of the album, and gives the song a little more room to breathe.

WRONG!

I think we can all agree whoever wrote that was a fucking spanner! That wasn't "trimming the fat", it was just taking off songs, from a nearly 20 year old record, just because he personally didn't like them. What's next, trimming the fat from Pink Floyd's the Wall because he didn't like the weird interludes and some of the non radio friendly songs?! Trimming the Led Zeppelin catalog to make one complete hour of songs he personally thinks are the only good ones!? Smashing the Big Four together and discarding most of the tracks as they're all "too heavy for him"!?!

...i may have ranted a bit there.

I agree with this Mike Rancid guy, as great as the Fragile truly is, Trent made some poor judgement calls on his sequencing and which tracks were included. A much better version would be:

1. Somewhat Damaged
2. The Day The World Went Away
3. The Frail
4. The Wretched
5. Missing Places
6. We're In This Together
7. The Fragile
8. Just Like You Imagined
9. The March
10. Deep
11. Even Deeper
12. Pilgrimage
13. One Way To Get There
14. No, You Don't
15. Taken
16. La Mer
17. The Great Below

18. Not What It Seems Like
19. White Mask
20. The New Flesh
21. The Way Out Is Through
22. Into The Void
23. Where Is Everybody?
24. The Mark Has Been Made
25. Was It Worth It?
26. Please
27. +Appendage
28. Can I Stay Here?
29. 10 Miles High
30. Feeders
31. Starfuckers, Inc.
32. Complication
33. Claustrophobia Machine (Raw)
34. Last Heard From
35. I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally
36. The Big Come Down
37. Underneath It All
38. Ripe (With Decay)
39. And All That Could Have Been
--. The Perfect Drug (Hidden Track)

After almost five years of waiting, this tracklisting would have made much more sense to me..

sonic_discord

As much as I love The Perfect Drug, I don't think it would fit on The Fragile. It would stand out as an anomaly, especially if it were just tacked on at the end. Ripe (with Decay) is the perfect way to end that album. I do think that And All That Could Have Been would feel at home on The Fragile, but I don't think I'd place it there, after Ripe for the same reason (perhaps before it?). As for Deep, it's a decent song, but it's nowhere near the caliber of quality of most of the songs on The Fragile and I don't feel that it belongs there either. That being said, I would definitely give the rest of your customized version a spin!

neorev

I honestly never really dug Ripe (With Decay). It's alright, but probably the weakest closing track for an NIN album in my book.

And All The Could Have Been would definitely be my choice as a closer. Such an amazing track, up their with the best Fragile tracks. If it's not the last track, then it would be second to last with Underneath It All as the closer.

I think it's a perfect ending, quite a sad ending too, especially when you look at it lyrically with the rest of the album. The album is called The Fragile. There's lots of "we're in this together" and "I won't let you fall apart" type lyrics within the album. Chasing a love, a fix, a cure. Only then to realize in the end that he is tainted, he is not complete, and realizes he can't be with the one he's been chasing and yearning for this whole time. A moment of beauty and sharing love only to be shattered with the inability to deal with one's inner demons. Hence being fragile. Something that feels so beautiful in the moment, but easily breakable. Ending with And All That Could Have Been would have been perfect. Like this whole album was a thought or a wish. Things could have been beautiful, but in the end they are falling apart. Love is fragile, life is fragile, being/existence is fragile. That song is like looking at the past and thinking "oh how amazing it could have all been." And if you're unhappy with yourself, you will never feel complete. Your personal demons will continue to erode the one you love if you can't fix yourself from being fragile.

Or I'm looking way too much into this.

And it musically contains a reprise of a motif from The Great Below, tying the ends of both discs together.

I think it was either unfinished or simply too perfect/rounded-out for how The Fragile needed to feel. I don't think we are supposed to feel like TF is in any way a complete thought or a story with a beginning, middle and end. It's supposed to be fragments and hanging disconnects, incomplete, multiple roads to nowhere that sometimes intersect. You're not supposed to find anything – you're supposed to stay lost.

I wonder if Reznor's credit in the Twin Peaks cast will be a performance in the Bang Bang Bar that closes the episodes. Most musicians in the cast-list appear to be playing themselves at those shows.

That post I made was supposed to be a joke. The guy was bitching about the length of The Fragile, and cut it in half.

I made it twice as long, with every known track from that era, plus TPD as a hidden track.

Nevermind..

Sorry, your post didn't come across as a joke to me. I have seen a LOT of very similar posts here in which people create their own custom super, ultra, mega deluxe version of The Fragile and it didn't appear to be dripping with sarcasm, so I took it at face value. Anyway, I did read part of that article and got the general gist of it, but I couldn't bring myself to read the whole thing.

Yeah, I've definitely noticed a few that sound remarkably similar. The music Mac Quayle made for Mr. Robot is another example, although it's fantastic and if you ask me, falls more into "heavily inspired by" territory than "ripoff" territory. The show is amazing too.

Now, now. He's a doped clown, there is a big difference!

Kidding aside, there is still significant overlap between NIN's and MM's fanbases. They didn't need to point out that they're sharing a stage on social media, but for casual fans who might not drop big bucks on a festival just to see NIN play may want to see both for the same price. Simple marketing, not necessarily an artistic endorsement.

It amazes me that for the respect they have for each other and for the amount of piano in Trent's music, he hasn't asked Garson to be at least a part of his touring ensemble. Even another installment of Ghost improvisations with this man on keys would probably be nothing short of amazing..

the problem for trent is that he's a perfectionist and a control freak, and garson, in his "live in the moment" style might pull out a fucking ragtime piano solo in the middle of "just like you imagined" which would be...awkward.

I had a dream about the 2017 tour. NIN opened with Branches/Bones in a stage that just consisted of a giant LED screen. 6 members just standing around not playing any instruments. A revival? When did they ever stop using NIN music in movies and trailers and tv shows? From over the last few years, I've heard NIN used in Fringe promos, Law & Order, The Hangover sequel, Cabin in the Woods, Person of Interest, that crappy Doom movie, various Cash version Hurts in that Wolverine movie and other places. I'm doubtful it will be played live during the upcoming shows, but I'd still love to see "Before the Flood." I just can't decide which instrument I'd prefer to see Trent playing on the track.

However, in relation to the album of the same name, I do feel we'll get to see "A Minute to Breathe." It just seems like a nice closer, especially if you use the "Na-Na-Na" verse to lead into the closing of "The Day the World Went Away."

While this is pretty shitty for an artist to do, it should probably be pointed out that Trent took 'inspiration' from Resident Evil's 'Plant 42' boss fight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cY9Ea5X4gD4

I'm not hearing it.

I mean, you could always maybe explain why you think that's the case. Because to me that sounds like a fairly generic VGM tune from the PSX era, and nothing about it sticks out as something that would have directly influenced TR.

The RE music sounds like MIDI with some SNES-level cheapo samples over it. It sounds like it might as well be from a haunted castle level in a Mario game. I'm not really hearing anything structurally (other than it's "scary" sounding) that would have influenced NIN, much less imply it's some sort of ripoff on a KANGA level. That's just a reach.

Unless you have some sort of quote one way or the other establishing otherwise.

I think he may have mixed up the DualShock Director's Cut replacement score. Read my post above with the actual original score that is beloved and has some NIN elements.

Actually, I think he was making a joke.

Are you talking about either of those Resident Evil songs? Because that's what I'm talking about.

On top of not hearing that at all, the opening riff of Somewhat Damaged is just four notes over and over again. EEEG I think?

I'm not insulting TR here, he loves to do intricate and interesting things with deceptively simple parts working almost polyrhythymically.

Insofar that it has a repeating series of four ascending notes? Because that's not really the same as being "almost identical"

Imagine hiring someone else and they deliver that shite DualShock score to you and you having to take credit for it. Now it makes sense why that specific score was so trash lol.

Makoto Tomozawa, Koichi Hiroki, & Masami Ueda's original score is so much more haunting. It really is what helped made the game as great as it is.

I wouldn't call it identical, but seriously, how do people not hear the obvious similarity? This is the first time I have heard this BTW, so thanks.

Really not the place, but it's a progression: D > D# > E > F

I was watching an episode of Full House (season 8 - 1994/95) tonight and these teenage dudes asked Stephanie Tanner and her friend Gia if they were "the two girls that jumped on stage at the Nine Inch Nails concert."
I think the ninwiki actually mentions that

there's a NIN Collecting And Trading group on facebook that a few of us ETSers are in, and there are so many IDIOTS in there. a guy just posted his "favorite concert shirt" that he was "thinking about framing and hanging on the living room wall" and it's a TERRIBLE bootleg from 2013 that uses the band photo from the 2009 lineup on the cover. the printing was SO fucked up and it was just hideous. a bunch of people pointed out that it was a bootleg and he deleted his post. then there's all the people asking for copies of deviations from people who ordered extras...even though they're still readily available from nin.com... so are people just really dumb, really lazy, or somehow both?

i think if you're in a group dedicated to the collecting and trading of items released by a particular band, you should be able to do the minimal amount of research to figure out how to get something. i'm not an elitist and i'm not trying to be a jerk, these people are just so frustrating.

You know, it terms of WHAT the songs are, The Slip kind of reminds me of Bowie's "Low" and ""Heroes"". For instance, the first half of all three albums are songs that are more conventional than the second half, which is more ambient and less "typical". Another parallel is that both TS and Low were made right after both artists had just come out of a experimental phase (Ghosts I-IV and Station to Station (which had Krautrock influences)).

I don't know whether this has been mentioned before, but "Fuckin' Up the Count" by Freddie Gibbs samples "Right Where It Belongs", specifically the back left channel of the 5.1 mix.

Here's "Fuckin' Up the Count": https://youtu.be/23O2U41p6cY?t=21

And here (at least for the next 24 hours) is the relevant portion from the isolated back left channel of RWITB: https://clyp.it/lywqsc5j

Note: I would have posted this in the Deviations thread but that thing has devolved into something between an argumentative shitstorm and a penis-measuring contest of whose package is damaged the most. So.

Just now finished listening to Deviations 1 for the first time. This is also the first time I've heard any material from The Fragile in over 10 years (aside from songs played live in front of me). Here are some brief thoughts:

Removing the lyrics makes several songs more interesting, while others are undermined by their simplicity. Loops become more obvious, resulting in tedium in the most extreme examples.

It seems like many tracks are mislabelled. Some are alternate takes and labelled as "(instrumental)" while others are virtually identical to the album version and are called "(alternate version)". Complication comes to mind as something that sounds exactly the same to me (albeit with a slightly extended outro) but it's apparently "alternate".

Probably controversial: I feel this release does not warrant a new halo number. The unreleased material is great but the majority of what's on offer here is essentially the album minus vocals. I was under the impression that TRAR had actually gone into the songs, revisiting them and tweaking them to form a new album. Nope. This is basically just The Fragile sans vocals with some bonus content. Mind you, what's on offer here is excellent, but then, the original release was excellent, so... anyway, imo this should have been halo 14 (deviations 1) or something. They did something similar for The Downward Spiral remaster, so why not here? I'm sure I'm completely wrong here and Tront knows best. ♥

Ripe With Decay + drums is funky as shit.

One Way To Get There is eh.

I almost wish TR had never given Saul Williams a bunch of TF outtakes to use on Niggy Tardust. Skin of a Drum is great but I'd personally prefer it if The March was its own thing. I can't listen to it without Saul's voice floating over the top. Who knows what the heck happened to the other tracks.

Why is Feeders not before No, You Don't? Weird placement, but maybe it would have made the album lop-sided. Interesting to realise that that short intro was a snippet of a full song all along, and no one had any idea.

Seems that TRAR forgot to remove the faded-in lyrics from Underneath It All. Bizarre.

Listening to the original version of 10 Miles High is surreal.

I still can't hear The Big Come Down in any format without feeling like it's about the fear of taking a dump (thanks, internet person, for etching that image into my head forever).

There's a NIN logo on page 22 (+28) of the pdf that's the wrong aspect ratio, and it's really fucking annoying. It's like a bad bootleg. Also, that blobby 'F' is rubbish, both conceptually and visually (sorry, DC).

Speaking of artwork, is Deviations 1 sponsored by Leffe? I spy a little logo that may or may not be a blunder.

Not What It Seems Like and Was It Worth It? are really cool. Why were these not on the original album?

Hearing a few of the Lost Fragile tracks is a dream come true. But there's a problem. They have no vocals. Hearing D1 just makes my loins burn harder for the full versions of these songs.

What tracks were alternate takes but labeled '(instrumental)'? I'm curious as I must have missed them when I listened.

Also, I think that slightly extended outro is what makes it an '(alternative version)', some of the alt takes have broad stroke differences, others are tiny I guess.

I won't list them all. However, Ripe With Decay is one of the more obvious ones. The drum completely changes the feel of the song.

I'd go as far as to say that Somewhat Damaged is more worthy of being called an "alternate version" than Complication, seeing as there's a whole synth section at the end which aren't present in the original. Complication just copy/pastes a few extra bars at the end.

JLYA is just missing a bit of static, otherwise it's identical to the original instrumental. Not really an alternate take.

Pilgrimage lives up to its parentheses. Practically the entire song is different. But 10 Miles High should have been an alt version too.

Oh shit, I totally missed that it wasn't labeled as an alt take. It totally is, and the drum totally does. Frankly, it's one of the more extreme alt takes. Also didn't notice that Somewhat Damaged wasn't listed as an alt take, it also was one of the bigger changes.

I really wasn't paying attention I guess. The labeling of 'alt' verses 'instrumental' is, in fact, completely jacked up.

This is nothing new, Somewhat Damaged instrumentally was avaible like this ever since Itunes made The Fragile instrumentally for free

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1o6MszdZlk

Just look at the date of the video, a lot of stuff from deviations isn't all that different from "The Fragile Instrumentals", The Fragile instrumental tracks I believe have better quality in deviations, I've yet to find a deeper difference though.
