I loved how Trent would lurk over th thread about a new album that had just come out to see our comments and thoughts and then he would reply with quote someone who rants about how bad the new album is and say something like «I LOVE YOU!!» ...I also remember him answering in the thread «worst NIN songs ever» something like «Love this thread! Love you guys! xoxo!»

Made me laugh!

Endlessly
11-27-2012, 08:12 PM
^^ I was pretty fond of the time he went into one of the concert review threads and made two posts, one right after the other. If I remember right they basically ran, "This show was GREAT! They played all of my favorite songs, especially Head Like A Hole!" and then, "This show was the WORST! They didn't play any of my favorite songs, and I'm so sick of hearing Head Like A Hole!"

I'll never forget when someone compared (some Year Zero song?) to KMFDM and he got SO PISSED that someone compared anything he did to "KMFD-fucking-M" or however he worded it.

Out of curiosity, in what context did he want Jinsai to rub vagisil in his ears? I'm assuming theres no way to check these comments out, now that the old ETS is gone?

I seem to remember his first 20 posts or so were exclusively for trashing Chris Vrenna, calling him a musical janitor among other things. Before anyone knew it was him, Levi asked him what Vrenna did so heinously to attract so much of his time and attention.

YES! I was just thinking about this the other day, and was unable to find it. I think there was a NIN v. KMFDM and possibly NIN v. Pig.... while fairly certain Steve White did some remixes for TR, still not sure which album they would be on.

KMFDM's "Light" had a remix called the "Fat Back Dub mix" by NIN, if i'm remembering the title correctly. i've got it floating around somewhere.

today, i listened to Year Zero all the way through for the first time since...2008? i still don't love it, but i like it way more than i did back when it came out, and i think i've narrowed down my distaste for the album: trent's vocals.

now, i understand he was trying to portray characters, and i usually love his voice, but i can't stand the majority of his vocals on the album. they feel goofy and out of place, and it makes me uncomfortable to listen to some of the songs. and i hate feeling that way. the majority of the instrumental work is FANTASTIC, and i love the sound he was going for, and think he did a fantastic job. i also love the story and ARG that surround the album, as it makes the music a much more visceral experience.

anyway, i've finally figured out why, after so many years, year zero just doesn't sit well with me. i love the music, don't like most of the vocals, and still can't stand Capital G.

has anyone constructed a fully instrumental version of the album using the multi-tracks?

The older I get, the harder I find it to relate to anything prior to Awitha Teetha. I still enjoy the albums, I just can't get into them like I could when I was such an angsty teenager mad at the world.

Hey guys, I talked to Mr. Uhls about the YZ tv series on FB again, he kindly messaged me back and while it is a little cryptic, it does shed some light on the situation.

Me: Hey Jim, I read Trent Reznor's Reddit session today where he discusses the Year Zero TV show. He mentioned that himself and Rob Sheridan have been delegated to writing for the series. They said it was because the writer they had difficulties working with their writer. I'm not fully conscious of your role in the project, I had originally read the Daniel Knauf was attached. Can you confirm your continuing involvement just to set my mind at ease? Thanks again for your time. I understand if you are unable to answer this, thank you for responding the first time, I wish you success in all your future work!

Jim Uhls: It's a lot more complicated than that, and has to do with me being a "servant of two masters," as there was disagreement between Trent and the other producers.

A little disappointing, but I'm still holding out hope for the series...

The Daisy idea is intriguing. I'm imagining it kinda of like Pandora, where you start with a music "expert" or curator instead of a sample song. You would then get a selection of their tastes. Kind of like Trent's 80's synthpop playlist on Spotify, only generated instead of fixed. Somewhere between pure algorithm and Internet DJ.

Leviathant
12-10-2012, 01:04 PM
I'd wager that it's not necessarily that NIN is 'back with Interscope' so much as they owe Interscope one more album on their contract, and that when they split way back when, it was understood that Trent could do his own thing without incurring the wrath of Interscope lawyers so long as at some point he completes his original 7-record-deal with Interscope. (PHM, TDS, TF,
AATCHB, WT, YZ, NIN's Career Retrospective)

MrSlfDstruct

We've known that was coming forever as TR even said something to the tune of still owing Interscope some "bullshit greatest hits" thing. The timing seems like it'd be up to Interscope, who I doubt cares if NIN is in the HOF at this point.

Yeah, I guess they could push the back catalog as part of the hullabaloo. Maybe with some luck they'd be open to working with TR for some sweet re-releases (Broken deluxe??).

Really though, is induction a big deal in the industry? That's not meant to be derogatory or anything, I've just never seen a lot of hype built up around the Hall or the inductions, aside from the yearly concert.

I hope the two "new" songs are The Life You Didn't Lead and Just Do It.

I thought it was confirmed that Just Do It was never recorded. I'd love to hear it as well, the fact that it was so controversial to even those working on the album, on an album already sparking controversy, is intriguing.

Re: Contractual Obligation

I could be wrong here, but my understanding is that Trent was free of his contract with Interscope back in 2007. Interscope, for some reason, considered Year Zero Remixed as the 7th, and final, album.

08 october 2007: big news

hello everyone. i've waited a long time to be able to make the
following announcement: as of right now nine inch nails is a totally
free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. i have
been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the
business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very
different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a
direct relationship with the audience as i see fit and appropriate.
look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008.
exciting times, indeed.

Also, on the Wikipedia entry for Year Zero Remixed: This album was the last Nine Inch Nails album to be released by Interscope Records (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interscope_Records); it fulfilled the band's contractual commitments to the company, leaving Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor to proceed as a "totally free agent, free of any recording contract with any label".

The contract most likely specifically stipulates a greatest hits release, rather than "one more album"

jessamineny
12-10-2012, 06:24 PM
It's more a language thing... there's no requirement on TR's part to fulfill the contract. As part of the record contract, Interscope held/holds the rights (http://www.billboard.com/news/post-interscope-reznor-focusing-on-new-album-1003655952.story#/news/post-interscope-reznor-focusing-on-new-album-1003655952.story) to release a greatest hits collection at some point in the future. Have to think that "two new songs" means two new songs. Especially with an album following and him previously saying he would work on nin throughout 2012. Excited!

I think the two new songs would be Trent's way of making the collection less of a cash-in for Interscope, or to make it just a bit more worthwhile for the obsessive fans that'll buy it because it has a Halo number. Which it most likely will.

It also seems like Trent's just going to use the best-of release as a way to generate some buzz for the album coming after that, which will most likely be another independent Null release. He said that signing with Columbia was for promotional purposes to get HTDA out into the open more; none of that is necessary for NIN.

He said that signing with Columbia was for promotional purposes to get HTDA out into the open more; none of that is necessary for NIN.

Well, he has mentioned that labels could be good for NIN for marketing, especially in the international markets. He related a story (http://www.spin.com/articles/trent-reznor-david-byrne-major-labels-destroy-angels-radiohead)about how he was on tour overseas and had trouble finding his records in stores, and didn't see flyers for his concerts.

I think I've said this before, but he's doing so many things now in so many different disciplines. When he went independent, it was just NIN that he (and his manager and Rob) were running. Now he has a new band, and all the other projects (including ones we don't know about, I'm sure), plus a family. That's a lot to manage, and turning back to a label to handle/worry about some of those marketing and distribution tasks might not be so distasteful.

gorast
12-11-2012, 12:07 AM
Ah, yeah, there is that. I didn't mean to imply that re-signing with Interscope or any other label would be distasteful (and I'm not saying that you accused me of that, either [this is getting too complicated]), but I just figured that maybe Trent would prefer to retain control over everything he's doing with NIN, top to bottom. Because he has so many things he's working on, maybe an enormous income from a single project isn't what he's aiming for anymore. Perhaps he could hire a marketing company for the exposure aspect. I'm not sure, I'm not in the business so I have no idea if any of that is even feasible.

In any case, I don't think he'll be going back to Interscope for any reason. My bet is that if he brings NIN back into a major label, he'll go with Columbia again.

This is good, but yet upsetting news at the same time, about the "2 new songs". It's good for obvious reasons, new NIN material... But it's bad because it's not being released until 2014... That's along time away. Meaning, there will be no new NIN material between now and 2014. Also, it says he will be recording a full blown NIN record right after that, meaning 2015 release for a proper NIN release!?!?! geez...

Whatever happened to this "so called 2013 tour" that is being planned. he seriously going out on the road with Terrible Lie and HLAH again? I mean, i'm as stoked as the next person for NIN's return to stage, I even jumped the gun and booked the week off after coachella in case he does start his tour then, but I was hoping we'd get some new material on the road... I'm hoping he at least debut's these "2 new tracks" live on the road for this 2013 tour, that would at least keep be satisfied.

What 2013 tour?

He's touring this spring, you'll see.

He's taking our good friends HTDA on tour and he needs some bait for people to go to the show... guess who's headlining? Starts with an "N"

EDIT: Sorry, i'll explain my post a little more logically without being a dink.

I am surprised with your response based on the fact you were a very active reader/commenter in the "So, NIN is back together, huh?" Thread created about 3 weeks ago. We all speculated about the return of NIN to the touring bus.

This was all prompted by all the NIN spottings about NIN being added to coachella this year, which I think is pretty legit.

Further proof of this so called "2013 tour" came straight from the horse's mouth with the following 2 comments from his reddit session a few weeks back.

"Thank you. I spend a lot of time and energy thinking about how music is presented live. Lights in the Sky was probably my favorite live show I've worked on so far. This was a real collaboration between myself, Rob, Roy Bennett, and Moment Factory. We set out to make an experience and I really felt proud to put that on every night. Cryptic additional comment: 2013."

And

Aside from destroy angel's new EP, what's next for you? (http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/134vgv/i_am_trent_reznor_of_nine_inch_nails_and_how_to/c70ulcg?context=3)
A number of things. Tweaking some things for the HTDA full LP (coming in Spring), helping Josh out on a new QOTSA track, working with Roy, starting rehearsals for two bands.

If that's not enough proof there is a tour in the works, I don't know what is.

sheepdean

I still don't think NIN is touring in 2013, he's never THAT blatant without just saying it. It could easily be something else, or a one off show with Dre to promote Pandora Spotify Last.Fm Turntable.Fm Daisy or something. A full blown tour, with HTDA and the writing of a NIN album and Daisy and whatever else he's doing seems so unlikely to me.

ManBurning
12-11-2012, 03:36 AM
It probably won't be "full blown" in the sense of going out for 6 months and hitting every country on the planet like he has in the past, but I think he'll do a short tour that lasts no longer than a month to take his angels on the road, hitting the major markets.

I think he knows angels can't support a full blown show this early in it's career, so he's thinking of a way to get exposure to it. What other way than resurrect NIN for some live shows to bring angels along.

They have 2 small children now, so unless they take them on the road with them, which is very unlikely, they won't be gone for long. Maybe he is only going to do Coachella and a couple club dates around then in California, but I am a beleiver that NIN is back on the road in one form or another for 2013.

sheepdean

If a tour is both NIN and HTDA, you're going to have one of those bands playing really poorly because Trent is too tired. You'd have to open with NIN (as HTDA puts him in a lesser role), which fans wouldn't like, and you'd either have Rob, Q and Atticus in both bands, or have three people with their limelight completely stolen. If NIN tour next year, I doubt it will be alongside HTDA.

WorzelG
12-11-2012, 04:16 AM
Trent's made such an effort to distance HTDA from being just NIN with female vocals, he's hardly going to tour them together.

Reading that New Yorker article, it seemed to say that, apart from the 2 songs for Interscope, he was going to BEGIN writing a new NIN album after that, so in 2014. This makes me wonder if the stuff in 2013 he spoke of cryptically in the Reddit thing was a tour to promote the deluxe Fragile release, playing the album all the way through or something

I just can't see this going down well with a festival audience, so I don't think festivals would be involved

I am convinced he will do the whole "play the fragile from front to back" sometime in his career still, I just don't see it being in 2013. Reason being, why release TF next year, it only turns 14. Someone here wrote that the deluxe version of TF will probaably be released in 2014, just in time for a 15 year anniversary. That actually makes some sense. Then a short tour to promote that at the end of 2014, write NIN stuff on the road, release an album in 2015 and maybe tour behind that again. if Interscope plan on releasing a best of album in 2014, seem more likley to release TF deluxe then as well and tour while he has 2 fresh new releases.

So, this brings us back to the question... what the bloody hell IS he touring with in 2013?

I have a new thought, he's gonna do HTDA, and either he will open or close the show with just him on a piano doing "still" type reconstructed songs. It will be called "an evening with Trent Reznor and HTDA" then I can see Atticus and Q and rob maybe joing in for some other accoustic instruments for the NIN "sessions" so he doesn't have to hire another band.

As much as I reeeally like that idea, I feel like that wouldn't keep HTDA seperated as its own entity, which is what it needs right now. Touring and sharing the bill with "Trent Reznor" or "Nine Inch Nails" would only reinforce HTDA's current popular status as "Trent Reznor's side project," and I think Trent knows that. I think if he does any touring for HTDA, it won't be with NIN or TR solo material.

I could see a NIN song being covered/reinterpreted by HTDA on tour, though.

(Sorry, I realize this was more about HTDA than NIN, heh.)

Because, from what we've heard about it over the past three years, it's getting the deluxe treatment far beyond what TDS got. PHM will probably be a joke compared to what we'll get when the Fragile reissue comes out. Thus, it makes more sense to wait for another milestone anniversary to release The Fragile as opposed to PHM.

I mean, why on earth? Why would you want two song titles from 1994, which I'm still convinced don't exist in any form beyond a concept, rather than something reflecting his talents today?

Edit: of course, TLYDL is a song title from 2004 not 1994. My point stands I think.

it'd be cool if there were a bonus disc of alternates and rarities. considering it's doubtful they'd be on The Fragile re-release (save the actual vinyl), perhaps that'd be a good way to get the alternate/unedited versions of those songs onto CD, and space for a high quality release of some of the remix rarities TR put on remix.nin.com.

also kinda wondering if Interscope will push to milk it like EMI did with the best of Radiohead release, where the limited second disc had exactly one b-side and was otherwise full of other album songs everyone already owned. i suppose they had a reissue campaign for all the separate albums for which they kept b-sides.

WOAH I just had a thought
What if it's not two "new" songs, but two songs we know he recorded under Interscope, Now I'm Nothing and Sex Dwarf? That way he wouldn't give anything new to the label, but still give the fans something.

I think that it makes 100% more sense to put old songs that haven't been released before - that way, old fans are sure to want it, and less people get pissed off about the whole greatest hits thing.

And he doesn't have to tease anything from Halo 28 that way either. Unless he hides it in the pregap or something. ARG.

Totally agree, Trent mentioned in the fan interview that he never got permission to release those songs saying "you don't really want to ask me that do you? Its not like they were songs that TR hated, he played them live on tour and then released them to fans. Pretty sure he just didn't put them on WT because he couldn't find an album flow he liked with them. Trent has even said in interviews that there is not a big collection of completed songs that he hasn't released. I really don't believe that when this thing is released it will feature 2 brand new never-before-heard songs. Marketing a greatest hits to the general public with NSPN and NE as "new" songs seems more likely. I could be wrong though, but I doubt it.

A lot of fan-bitching about the content of NIN's singles in the past was partly because the singles tended to follow the vagaries of chart classification rules and DJ-centric vinyl configuration; ie, they were not targeted at servicing fans but rather at maximizing promotional impact.

This is by way of saying: fuck B-sides, long live bonus tracks.

Deep is without a doubt THE most underrated song in NINs entire discography. I love love love the Deep video. I bet the director had a blast making it. I love its stupid late 80s tacky Hollywood straight-to -video low budget B Movie plot. It perfectly suits the slightly dirty scuzzy beat that Deep produces.
I like it more than the video he made with David Fincher.

The scene where the Green paint blasts open with the strobe lights is brilliant and where the woman gets burnt by the orange paint looks amazing. Just like the way the color looks, that surge of it blasting really suits the epic breakdown in the song, I wish he had made more music videos like this one.

Yeah, I don’t think they needed the reporter. I am guessing that a money handler said “I don’t understand” and then the “reporter” was created.
I don’t think the video/story even needed the “toxic dye,” either way your robbery plot is pretty screwed after that much dye explodes on everything, which could lead to same dramatic conclusion.
But, I have expressed my feelings before, I love the video and think it fits the song perfectly. It is a top 5 NIN vid for me. I know TR has expressed a dislike for it, and also realize the community mostly dislikes it, but I think it makes the song better. I wrote a big thing on fatalism and the colors on the old message board, but I won’t bore everyone here with it again, just chiming in to say I am also the rare fan that loves the video.

yeah, we read into TR's Reddit the wrong way! This makes perfect sense now. Oh well, i'm a tad disappointed. Totally thought it was the return of NIN in 2013, but now that I see this article it does make sense he'd be lending a hand doing this.

This sound city stuff is probably what's going to be at Coachella, and Trent will be there giving his helping hand to this and then he will probably be playing a side stage with HTDA...

I actually hope i'm wrong and NIN does return, but at this point I tend to beleive this more. Especially when he has clearly came out and said no new NIN til 2014 when Interscope wants their "best of", he'll probably tour to back that up.

FernandoDante
01-03-2013, 09:12 PM
Ok, here's my "complete" guess at what will happen:

Trent keeps himself busy with HTDA during the first half of 2013. Album and shows turn out to be sort of disappointing, only make people miss NIN even more.

Since people are desperately craving for some NIN, out comes The Fragile's deluxe edition rerelease around August (special edition will cost $200), and a US tour of the album played in its entirety (because eff you rest of the world or something?). The tour is awesome.

Then NIN is on everyone's minds again, and fans everywhere are excited for more. The Interscope compilation is released in early 2014, the two new songs are "pretty good, IMO; a mix of the old and new NIN". A regular greatest hits tour follows, this time with the rest of the world, big festivals. One new song will be played just to avoid the whole thing feeling too retro (see: A Perfect Circle (http://bit.ly/TzW1b5), Faith No More (http://bit.ly/rZpRgl)).

New NIN album scheduled for July 2014. Released December 2014.

I agree with most of the above for the most part, but the timing of each individual thing will be different. I honestly cannot see The Fragile Deluxe being released this year at all, it makes no sense. He's probably going to release that September-November 2014 for a "15th anniversary" release. a 14th anniversary release makes no sense at all.

What I think we know for sure is HTDA is going to be released this March, he'll *probably* be at coachella to support this band and then maybe do a quick west coast and possibly east coast tour at the clubs to play HTDA material to see how that pans out. I'm guessing he will be playing piano and/or keys at this Dave Grohl sound city backup band gig that's planned soon, and after all is said and done he will start writing these 2 "new NIN songs" in the summer, than give them to interscope, they will then make their "best of" compliation, release it in spring or summer 2014, The Fragile delexue will be released in time for it's 15th anniversary and a fall/winter tour will commence.

QOTSA re-released their debut album on its 13th anniversary, and did a tour where they played the whole thing. It was supposed to be a 10th anniversary thing (like we heard The Fragile would be), but record label bullshit got in the way for 3 years.

I wouldn't buy the $200 special edition, but I know that more than a few members of this board would be willing to go even beyond that.

You faceplamers are taking my shit way too seriously.

Most of that is wild guessing that may or may not be random, and is based in fact as much as any other wild guesses around here. I'm just posting this here so that if any of it does occur, I can look back and point at it and say "ha".

The things I actually consider quite possible: HTDA being disappointing (I'm not the only one who's leaving that EP collecting dust by now); people reviewing the two new songs as "pretty good, IMO; a mix of the old and new NIN" (because some people will say that about EVERYTHING Trent does, ever since The Slip came out); $200 The Fragile (limited edition Ghosts I-IV cost $300 and sold out, I think guessing $200 was a bit optimistic).

It's my 40th this year in April, a fragile deluxe would be a perfect gift actually because I'd never justify that money normally, but as a one off frivolous present, yes

Has anyone thought about who they'd like in the band if NIN did tour? I'm quite torn actually between all of them. Robin would pip the guitar thing (even if I think Aaron North did the best The Big Come Down I've heard). But really tough contest for drums, bass. Would love Alessandro to come back if it was a fivesome on keys

I personally feel like Aaron destroyed The Big Come Down. In a bad way. I'm all for noise, hell I'm a NIN fan I love noise, but his "breakdown" on BYIT ruined the entire recording of that song for me. I would hope if/when Trent got a live band back together, Robin would be in it. Other than Trent, he is the longest standing band member, and the only one who has left and come back.
As for drums, I loved Josh, he was entertaining on top of being a great drummer. Not to mention the great videos we got from him. I am a big biased that he talked to me in one of the Spiral chats though.
Bass, I think it'd be awesome if Danny came back, but idk how likely that'd be. JMJ was an awesome bassist, and over-all musician, so I would love if he came back too.
I'm not sure if Ally would want to come back, since he left in order to do his own thing.

I hope it's gonna be just like any other past tour (2007 excluded): some returning members + some completely new guys. Trent never had all-new team as he never had the same band (again, except 2007, but there wasn't really a big pause after WT tour).

I have two comments/thoughts..
For whatever reason Ghosts sounds way WAY cooler to me on vinyl.. Maybe I'm an elitist vinyl hipster/nerd, but for some reason I get really bored with this release if I'm listening to it on headphones..

I'm actually pretty disappointed in how carelessly the standard vinyl packaging for Ghosts was designed.. You can't stuff FOUR LP'S in a gatefold jacket without making the spine a little wider.. Two of my discs are pretty fucking warped on account of being under so much pressure when they were stuffed in there, and then squished closed.

Oh well, thankfully the warp doesn't seem to affect playback.. Still kind of annoying

I can imagine the texture that vinyl creates would have a big effect on Ghosts. It sounds a bit clinical and cold on CD/digital in my opinion.

This might sound crazy but you could record from your amp's line out or headphone out and listen to the result on the move on headphones for the same distortion effect as listening to the vinyl in real time… but half of the experience of listening to vinyl on a hifi, headphones or otherwise, is the way it forces certain things on your listening activity: namely, a bit more attention, having to sit in one room, or listen for the switch-over point to pick up the record and flip it. Especially if you're working through a stack of 7"s.

I remember reading it before the album came out when the nin camp was posting obscure text images on nin.com. Good read, as is the movie from the 70's.

Too bad Bleedthrough fell apart, although its remains still "bleed through" With Teeth from a meta and kinda cool perspective.

That's pretty harsh. The nabbing is in a melody that runs through less than a third of the song - and even then, played at a different tempo, with different instrumentation, note timing and delivery, and punctuated by other elements.

When I saw QOTSA in the Roundhouse I thought Josh might say something out of the blue about Trent's birthday, and then he showed up and went "IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!" it was awesome.

Can you compare Mantra to anything else? Glad you enjoyed it.

Sounded a bit like a piece of music I just had to mix in an assignment. Trent on keys, Josh on Bass and Dave on Drums. Trent added some guitars in afterwards. No vocals... although that's just what they showed on the film. Quite quiet keys, cool little bassline and it all builds to something then disappears. Interesting kinda jam thing, but not a fully fleshed out song really. (AGAIN, that's just what I inferred from the film) - Think it may be one of the few ones that Butch Vig didn't produce.

I have a feeling it'll be a lot more complete on the album. Most of the other songs in the film didn't sound complete, either, since we didn't see the entire process for each one. It was really interesting to see the three of them working on an equal level, even though Josh and Dave both seemed sort of shell-shocked to be on the same level as Trent for the song. I can't wait to hear the full thing.

Charlie Clouser briefly discussed WIE? at some forum dedicated to synthesizers (linked here at ETS in another thread somewhere). It was in reply to the question about his live backing vocals, and he said that at rehearsals before the tour he nailed who-ho-how chant on the song's chorus so good that everyone were amazed. He didn't mention why did they cut it from the setlist, probably because no one asked.

from gearslutz:

On very few shows we did play a version of "Where Is Everybody?" and even though it was kind of a clunker live, there is one humorous tale from that one. As we were working it out in rehearsals at Compass Point in Nassau (rough, I know), we were stumbling our way through it early on, and for some reason I tried to sing the "whoa-ohh-ohh-ahhh-oohhh" line that comes right before "WHERE IS EV-ERY-BODY" in the chorus... and I NAILED IT.

Everybody literally dropped their instruments and stared at me, because my singing voice is so awful that the roadies would often substitute a CARROT, spray-painted black and with an SM58 grill on it, for my microphone (actual fact, I'm not kidding about this at all). Never mind the fact that that vocal line is WAY above the pitch range I had ever sung, but for some unknown reason I could actually sing that line. The other guys had been trying it and sounded weak, or cracked on the high note, or whatever, and Trent looked at me with a big grin and said, "that's your line!" - much to my horror.

So the roadies had to use an actual mic in my rig instead of the usual carrot, and for the ten or so times we played that song I actually sang that line and didn't blow it once! I was more amazed than anyone!

But I did start to get a little hungry on those shows as I couldn't pull the 58 grill off and nibble on the non-spray-painted end of my carrot-mic for a little mid-set pick-me-up.

Heh. True story.

If you read through his posts you'll find that actually AutoTune was badass on the Theremin... clever idea all the same.
edit: Not that I don't love his live performance though. He's definitely in my all-star NIN lineup.

Your wiki profile says you play the theremin. I hear its really hard to play it well – cause of pitch sensitivity and all that?
Well, let this serve as a lesson on believing what you read on Wikipedia!
The theremin is very hard to play well, and I certainly can’t play the thing in any meaningful sense; but I did use it for solos on a couple of songs with nine inch nails. In that context I ran the raw output of the theremin through an Antares ATR-1 rackmount AutoTune unit before feeding distortion and echo. By setting the ATR-1 to have a slow pitch-correct time, and to only allow three or four notes out of the octave, I was able to do solos that had wild theremin swoops but would land on pitches that were in key with the song.
In the context of NIN the theremin was more a visual thing than a musical one, and I certainly wouldn’t try to play one without AutoTune as the results would be an unpitched mess.

Yeah he said himself he couldn't play for shit, he's just a really good producer and hides his weaknesses. Same interview said he never really played keyboards before his work with NIN at all, and his first live show playing them was his first NIN show.

Gotta love Charlie! And I too would love to see him perform with NIN again. Him "playing" the Theremin sure is one of the highlights on and all that could have been.

Random NIN thought: listening to the 2007 Japan bootleg and even deeper comes on: "I hear them calling down the way WAHWAH WAWAH WAHWAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" Awesome! :D I also remember a meme or some sort of this making its rounds on here.

So I was just thinking there is a real possibility a new NIN album will be released to coincide with Beats streaming service. I know he said 2014 in that New Yorker profile but I don't really believe him. I'm sure he's been working on NIN material since at least last February when they finished mixing the HTDA album (yes, the HTDA album has pretty much been done for a year now). Thoughts?

I will side with the song was played live but maybe no one captured it.

That's not really possible. Almost every show from that tour was recorded either audio or video, and the setlist was almost completely static. The chance that they deviated from the fixed setlist and played it on one of the nights not recorded are extremely low. The most likely explanation is either soundchecking or rehearsals.

So I was just thinking the other day how upset I am with myself that I slacked on buying Still from the NIN store so many times when I had the chance, everything all qued up, and I didn't for whatever reason. I love the album so much and was crushed I didnt have a physical copy. So I randomly checked the other day and it was back in stock! My lucky day I suppose as it had been out of stock for a good while. Figured I would post this anyone who might have been in the same boat as me. I'm sure there aren't too many left.

Rapper Macklemore describes a story where he apparently visits Interscope Records and meets Jimmy Iovine, who is interested in his music and tries to convince him to join the label. Macklemore gives him a great answer at the end.

I'm sure Trent would wish he would have done the same back then...

546 to be exact. You may be happy that you found it back on the merch site, but wouldn't you have been happier if you had found mine and bought for $5 instead? Same goes for anyone here.

so bearded dude just out of curiosity why do you have 500 copies? Are you aware that they have been selling on amazon recently for upwards of 60-80 bucks? You should list on there as a retailer if you want to move them.

pretty sure that IS a new picture (although it's misleading, since Trent mentioned "beard-scratching" and seems to be beardless, at the moment)

We all know Trent grows a beard when he is in the studio and shaves for touring. He recently shaved, to get ready for HTDA's tour, obviously. :p

I'm more interested in what new material could come of this new line-up of guys he's going to tour with. I don't want to say that Trent is going prog (even with Belew on board), but his compositions are becoming more glacial and longer. I'm judging this from Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and a song like "Ice Age". Just a thought.

There's always the metaphorical beard. It's in all of us :p

So I'm on a Beatles phase, again, and stumbled onto a NIN/Beatles mashup between Come Together and... get ready: Closer. Here's an open note to future mashers/remixers out there:

Stop using Closer in your mashups. The song has lived its life. It's dead to me as it is to you and everyone else equipped with or without wit. Get creative cause I think there's plenty of better material out there to mash up. As mush as I love Come Together I don't wish to hear it again together with Closer. How about trying something like "I Want You (she's so heavy)" or Medley from Abbey Road together with I'm looking forward to joining you finally or whatever you find inspiring.

Cheers!

I thought Come Closer was pretty clever. But maybe it's just the child in me giggling at "I wanna fuck you right now." The lyrics don't mesh well, but at least this particular DJ knew how to alter pitch correctly (assuming we're talking about the same version)

I think I've enjoyed almost every version of Hurt live, but the one that always gives me goosebumps was the With Teeth tour version. It's just Trent and a keyboard for the majority of the song then as the song goes into it's final build, the lights pick up and the full band joins in. It was the first time I saw a show and was just overwhelmed with emotion.

It's as easily emotional rewatching it on Beside You In Time.

I've been thinking about the final dates of the Wave Goodbye tour and how they had all the special guests come out and perform. I think that if they didn't do that, they would have been able to play a lot more rarites in the set.
