I was kinda hoping to wake up and see a surprise, angsty new NIN song for election day... :(

I listened to Year Zero start to finish as I was driving around today. Just to get me in the mood should things go one particular direction. I forgot how much I enjoyed that album as a full piece.

Not sure why some of you absolutely want new NIN as a comment on what's going on in today's politics.

Yes, he did it with YZ and he's been voicing his opinion on politic affairs or world issues lately.

However, looking at the entire NIN catalogue, his art has mostly not been about this subject matter, but more about personal "issues".

For me, I'd prefer it to stay that way.

Is the election of someone like Donald Trump the perfect recipe to inspire Year Zero 2? A.K.A. Year One?

Or will it possibly create the right conditions to help reanimate the Year Zero TV series project from the dead?

I think Trent is more focused on looking after his kids, finishing off this other soundtrack (Patriot something or whatever it is) he's been working on, and a new, non-political single will be released on December 31.

So, basically it is not the best nin albums by fans, just a very small portion of it... (let me guess... those too young for 90's)

One thing is very clear: All time greatests videos and singles are from TDS, trent played the whole TDS in a show. TDS is very clearly the nin masterpiece. But I always see ppl mentioning TF, just because there's 6 years between the albums, and basically they were too young and started to listen in 2000.... not only fans but many too young press writers too.
Funny or Scary, I noticed a whole new generation with the 2006 THTF single, popular because you can dance on it, and soft rebelion, easily touching young girls in goth dancing.
Yes TF is probably place 2 but you won't change place 1, not a chance.

Well, that sounds like a very narrow-minded opinion regarding personal taste. I was born in '92 and started listening to NIN around 2009/2010, so by your logic I'm too young to appreciate TDS (spoiler: TDS is my favorite NIN album).

TDS definitely is a masterpiece — but so is TF. And I would definitely not argue with anyone whose most favorite album is TF. Totally legit and has nothing to do with being "too young".

I see what you mean, it's ok to have a favorite album, it's another thing to say that everyone's favorite is one that clearly isn't ... or being totally wrong on the nin history that really starts in 2000, if you work at press... It's a human thing unfortunaly to focus on his own world.

I have been a fan since PHM and TF is by far my favorite album. Don't get me wrong, TDS is an amazing album, but I don't think it has aged as well as TF. When it came out it was by far the greatest thing I had ever heard. I listened to that album so many times. I just find these days it is the album I listen to the least. I think there have been many, many better songs in the catalog since then.

I do prefer the "sound" of TDS. I think that is the best sounding album nin has released and I wish future releases would go back to that more organic vs. electronic sound. Also, that was the best time period as far as releases... best remixes, singles, videos... in that regard nin has really dropped the ball since (with the exception of And All That Could Have Been which was awesome).

Deepvoid
11-15-2016, 09:54 AM
I think the Year Zero era was a great one for the fans. Yes, NIN has been lacking in the music video department but the truth is, videos are costly and really don't serve a purpose anymore, especially for a band like NIN.

The complementary remix album following each release was really fun back in the days. I'm not even gonna acknowledge Seed Eight as it feels like a throwaway release.
Look NIN, as an entity, as evolved through the years and yeah, you're gonna lose fans and win some. I've learned to just accept what NIN is now and see what Trent has up his sleeve next.

Every band has that 1 album that is the arty, "cool" album that the casual fan doesn't get into, so when fans namedrop it as their favorite album, it shows their hardcore cred. Usually these albums gain credibility as the years go by. Mr. Bungle "Disco Volante", The Cure "Pornography", Bowie's "Low", Depeche Mode "Songs of Faith & Devotion" etc...for NIN, that album is 'The Fragile'...

This is one of those things that really puzzles me though, the fact that TDS is the biggest selling NIN album because I would think it would be the most difficult for the casual music fan to get into. How would they even get past Mr Self Destruct??? I know the Fragile is long but it isn't so hard and intense right from the beginning.

TDS is WAY more out-there and "artsy." Half of TF is pretty much straight forward pop structured songs. The only reason TDS sells so well is because of Closer and Hurt and even as singles those are pretty weird compared to Into the Void, We're In This Together and Starfuckers, Inc.

Is history required to choose only one record per any musician or band and put all other aside? Like, 100 years forward, will people speak of music from 1990s and occasionally mention that small dead nine inch nails project and its breakthrough the downward spiral and that's it, nada? That's horrible... If nothing else, PHM belongs in that position :p

the downward spiral 2008 US pressing on 180g vinyl (purchased from the NIN store)
definitely the best sounding out of the pressings i have (also have the 1994 original US promo pressing and 2008 EU "back to black" pressing, both are for sale)
my only complaint is that they still didn't change the track segue issues (the intro of "i do not want this" is stuck on the side that ends with "the becoming", the intro of "reptile" is stuck on the side that ends with "eraser")

FormatsReznor on the different track sequencing for different formats:

"Hello everybody. I've been doing a lot of European press lately and they've been mentioning the various configurations of 'the fragile' and wondering if there was a reason (other than to make the hard-core fan buy them all) to have some different tracks on them.

If you're curious, here's why. We agonized over the sequencing of the record and focused solely on the CD config. as the definitive one. After the decision was made to move to two CDs the problem then became removing tracks to get the right feel and flow.

Taking the new flesh' off the CD was a tough call because Alan and myself really like the track, but it destroyed the balance and it just didn't fit.

When we assembled the cassette, we now had four beginnings and endings to contend with instead of two of each (for the CD) follow? It worked out pretty well just dividing the songs up, but we wanted the A sides of the cassettes to be slightly longer than the B sides (so that when the tape flips over you are not in the middle of the first song on that side). We added the 'appendage' to 'please' to make that work.

For the vinyl, the decision to move to three discs was based on fidelity. (you can only fit so many minutes on a side of vinyl before it degrades the sound)

So now we are faced with SIX beginnings and endings. Simply splitting the sides up didn't work as well this time so we decided to include the other two tracks we had been considering ('10 miles high' and 'the new flesh') as well as use the full unedited versions of all the other songs on the record. The vinyl sequencing has actually grown on me lately as a viable alternate! -just thought you might want to know…"

I think he would do it. I would hope that any artist who cares about how their art is experienced would take the time to prepare it properly for each medium it will be available for. He did it with Welcome Oblivion and that was after digital and streaming had gained popularity. He also attempted to do something with Hesitation Marks by offering a "audiophile" version that is specific to digital. The content is the same, but the experience is different.

I applaud Reznor for making each version of the Fragile unique to each of its formats. But there's no way he'll ever put that much effort and thought into making unique versions for various formats with future releases.

If he does, that will be wonderful.

Like buckaroo mentioned, we can probably only expect audiophile versions and maybe surround sound versions.

on a side note: 1 and a half more weeks until the big announcement.

I'd love the new NIN to feel more analog again. On Hesitation Marks analog synthesizers were used, yet the album had quite a digital and clean sound.

Nothing against that, I enjoyed it very much. But I think it would be a nice change to have new material sound more raw again. Not in the meaning that it should be recorded and released straight away, I almost always prefer elaborate albums with many thought put into. More a sonical kind of raw. If that makes any sense...

Shocked you still listened to his records after he encouraged suicide to thousands of people. Regardless, I dont want Kanye to kill himself. Hes a wonderful person. I dont encourage suicide too anyone. Like curtis armstrong said in Better Off Dead to John Cusack. "suicide is never the answer little trooper"...Like the president elect Trump says. speaking of the ACL show...

Because of all the great work done by various NIN fans I just assumed you'd be able to get high quality audio from the original broadcast. Considering the full stream is no longer available I guess there is still a rights issue - does anybody know about such things? I'd imagine that Trent would keep some control over what happens to that film beyond the initial release. Anyway... I see that some individual songs are on YT in higher quality than the full-length version previously mentioned. Also there are video clips via the ACL website (http://acltv.com/episode/season-40/nine-inch-nails/). I know you're after audio, but these days it's not too difficult to work out a way around that.

Listening back to these has lead me back to the official streaming Tension video. It's not bad, is it? Of course it won't match the DVD/BD we were hoping for, but it's a lot better than nothing. I'm still hopeful that we'll see more from the Vienna recording one day - even if it's limited to streaming or download. Does any other artist have such a stockpile of unreleased pro-shot footage? I wonder.

Yeah, because a rip of a YouTube video of the entire show will have the songs broken down into separate files, with proper tagging, etc.

I'll see what I have on my PC when I get home, I don't have the audio from the show on my phone but if it was made available when the video files were out I probably grabbed it.

Now that we detected a ridiculous noob that never heard about youtube, and an asshole with double compression, keeping it for himself, I managed to make my own rip, because obviously we are missing it, this is a pure rip from original feed and the vimeo bonus, yes, that is really small : 86.8MB but believe it or not it's better that the asshole rip ! why ? because there isn't two destructive compressions, just one, the one applyed by ACL, cut using non destructive tools.

listen to the intro to Reznor-team-produced Dried Up, Tied and Dead to the World by Marilyn Manson. It pre-dates Year Zero era sound design by a decade.

If TR also wanted to go for the live drum beat and bass sound on The Reflecting God (since it's basically a NIN song with Manson singing), I'd be all for that!!

On the other hand, I've been listening to Ghosts a lot lately...I know a lot of us on here don't want anything that sounds like yet another soundtrack, but if it was as weird and diverse as the original, I'd be TOTALLY down for Ghosts V-VIII!!

I would take even just a solid update at this point. It is our fault I guess for being obsessive fans, but honestly... to claim new nin this year and almost a year later the only update is basically "when it's ready, we'll release it." The best gift would be for me not to feel like there might be news everyday.

Man, the older it gets the deeper my appreciation for WITH_TEETH grows. Been listening to it all week, and looking back it’s easily one of the best rock albums to come out of the 00’s decade, at least in my opinion. All The Love In The World is an absolute treasure of an album opener. The live performance of The Line Begins to Blur was a highlight on the supporting tour. The only nitpick I have is that one of the best songs to come from nin in the last 16 years, Non-Entity, didn’t make the album.

As much as I enjoy Pino Palladino's monstrous musical abilities, when it comes to the live resurrection of Sanctified, I prefer Josh's (and, later, Ilan's) steady, sturdy, repetitive bassline than Pino's noodling. Ilan added a little bit of variety in the 2014 tour. There was something magical when it was first brought back from the dead on the first 2013 live performance in Tokyo, right after Copy of A. The lights went all dark, and the drum loop kicks in, and then Josh begins playing the bassline (though he almost fucked it up, and that's natural, since it was his first live stint with NIN ever), and then Trent sings some familair lyrics, and then layers and layers of synths, and then... boom.

Yeah, if it's anything less than 5 years since the last album, it's within the normal timeline range. 5-6 years, time to get antsy. 7+ years is acceptable impatience time as far as NIN releases are concerned.

Latin is REALLY fucking weird and complicated

Novum is:
neuter nominative singular of novus
masculine accusative singular of novus
neuter accusative singular of novus
neuter vocative singular of novus

Nova is also:
neuter accusative plural of novus
neuter vocative plural of novus

managed to grab a screenshot of the release on the "upcoming releases" section of my home page. the links are dead and the user has been removed, but it's still showing up there for some reason.

Those are glitches in the database. I've observed other artists have 'unofficial' releases added there and then quickly removed.

No, you wouldn't be saying that if you observed what that particular spammer did. It affected a lot of different artists (added pictures of japanese women as cover art too) and I reported the fucker.

You'd think that they would have some kind of spam filter on the database to prevent such a thing from entering peoples' dashboard feeds, but here we are.

About 6 months ago a use submitted about 100 different releases that were all pictures of expensive cars, and the track lists were all in Chinese or something, It was a huge pain in the ass.
