I feel like The Slip would be a much better record if they didn't put Lights In The Sky, Corona Radiata, and The Four Of Us Are Dying in that order. Not that any one of those three are bad songs, particularly Lights In The Sky, but the record starts with a ton of momentum and then really slams on the brakes for almost 15 minutes.

no. just . . . no.

those three tracks, EXACTLY IN THAT ORDER, are what makes this album so great.

This is exactly why I like The Slip's artwork; it's so open to interpretation that everyone has their own take on something so simplistic looking that all give the song a different vibe or add a different layer to it.

Well, some of the TZ openings did feature ticking clocks floating in space. ;] I think even the track's main beat reminds me of that sound... but that's just an interpretation. As kleiner said, it's ambiguous enough so everyone can have their own take on it.

Yep, they are a good listen, and Demon Seed is one kick-ass ending. I really like The Slip, I just wish the first half would sound more like the Rehearsal versions.

I still think that TS has the best artwork in the whole NIN catalog. Rob is the best.

*edit* The Fragile comes 2nd, then Year Zero 3rd and honorable mention to PHM Remaster

I finally read that Rolling Stone article (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/threads/2863-NIN-Spotting-2014?p=206453#post206453). Ended with this quote: "The next incarnation might be limited in scale -- not presented as rock band Nine Inch Nails but something else, flipped on its head. That feels exciting to me. We'll see how it goes."

I wonder if he's thinking of just touring as Trent Reznor. The entire concert could be a mashup of NIN material, HTDA songs, soundtrack material. I would personally love that.
we've talked a little about that sort of thing you know?
i honestly think that it's inevitable. i REALLY think that trent will age gracefully, and i don't see him screaming fist fuck into his late sixties.
i want, and think that we will get, something like a Still tour.

So, in this case we need to create a new template for this future tour with "Trent Reznor and His Laptop 20xx Tour" as its title.

It seems like The Slip and Hesitation Marks on Provider Module are exactly what Eat Me, Drink Me and The High End of Low are on Echoing the Sound. It also seems like you can say that there's some fans on Provider Module that look at With Teeth the way some fans also looked at The Golden Age of Grotesque on Echoing the Sound. I still can't help but find that interesting or even ironic, as I've frequented both forums.

*I didn't know where else to put this because I didn't feel like it warranted a bump for the actual Provider Module thread. However, it still had something to do with Nine Inch Nails, and I was also a bit surprised as to how the reaction to later Nine Inch Nails on Provider Module sort of mirrored the reaction of later Marilyn Manson on Echoing the Sound.*

I'm a HUGE fan of both bands, but on the NIN side of the argument manson hasn't had a quality live show in almost 10 years. NIN may have resorted to a lame set this specific leg of the tour but the show is still entertaining in a non laughable way.

I will say in my personal opinion mansons born villain is a better manson album than hesitation marks is a nin album.

Manson's been getting brought up way more than usual around here lately, what gives?

Back OT: Trent seems far better at sequencing an album than most bands; there really aren't many things I can complain about with the order of songs on almost any album. It's just a fantastic detail, and as someone who is big on full-album listens as opposed to song to song jumping around, it's just a really nice aspect of NIN that was a big draw early on. And it's not just a matter of using cross-fades all the time like a lot of other bands rely on for that. It's almost hard to notice or appreciate sometimes for me, simply because it's so well done that you hardly notice it.

Oh, and the transition from Closer into Ruiner might be one of the greatest transitions into another song on any album I've ever heard. Especially being used to the radio edit of Closer before hearing TDS, having it cut off and abruptly go right into Ruiner was an eye-popping moment for me the first time around, and I've never forgotten that feeling.

And yeah, it's quite the irony, since most of their arguments can easily become thrown back at MM. I also suppose that the history between the two is just that strong, regardless as to whether it's positive or negative. (I admit that it's mostly negative though.) :p

I see what you mean. My only guess aside from the history between the two, would be that there's still an enormous crossover of fans from both fan-bases. And yes, I've also noticed that the Marilyn Manson discussion overall has subsided considerably over the years, especially in comparison as to how it was during most of 2002-2008.

It's probably just people like Hazekiah and I that somehow keep those topics alive, if not for just some brief/sporadic moments. I also don't mean to be a bother, but perhaps that will hopefully be the last Marilyn Manson-related observation/thought I've had tied with Nine Inch Nails for a while. :p

Oh dude don't worry, you're totally fine. There's nothing wrong with it. Just surprising to see a lot of references and talk of the guy the past week or so, from a lot of different members.

Fitting with the thread and kinda addressing that whole topic, too: I'm super happy Trent and Manson cut ties when they did and haven't done anything since. Not to offend Manson fans but I can't imagine him being on the same professional level as Trent anymore, if anything it would be a mess of Trent approaching things with a serious attitude and Manson just fucking off and turning it into the same kind of thing he's been doing. Trent grew up and grew out of the mid-90's music scene, Manson never really did. There's a lot of fans that have mentioned wishing they'd kiss and make up or tour together or whatever, but holy shit, I can't imagine anything high-lighting how awful Manson's live shows are now than having it follow or come before a NIN show.

I can't believe that I sometimes forgot just how much of a tease this can be. I wasn't at this concert, but the mere idea a few seconds of Happiness In Slavery being played near the end of The Great Destroyer was awesome. It's even much bigger than the tease I've gotten from a few seconds of The Only Time being played in the middle of Closer.

The Lolla Brazil show from this year is maybe the coolest setlist of 2014. That and Japan night 2. I love the setlists I got on the Soundgarden tour, but wow, that Japan -> QOTSA -> Latin America time for setlists seems really underrated and overlooked. Opening with Wish, Letting You instead of 1,000,000, Burn into The Great Destroyer into The Big Come Down into Gave Up, Beside You In Time, this could count as a realistic dream setlist for me.

I wonder why Interscope haven't just reissued The Fragile by themselves, an album that went to #1 on billboard and 2x platinum, even if they weren't aware of the amount the vinyl goes for (and they have people whose sole job it is to know), you'd think they'd just do their own standard reissue/repress.

I would imagine ultimately probably not, but he sure could make a stink about it to all the fans. And they know he's working on the super-deluxe special edition. A plain vanilla reissue is not likely to burn up the charts, so they really have nothing to gain by trying to circumvent him.

Well, I mean since they've gotten to the point to having product prototypes delivered to them I think it would be safe to say there may be some kind of deal inked without a due date. I think interscope probably knows they're sitting on a cash cow and doing a vinyl rerelease would destroy the market.

wait, what? is that why the vinyl single doesn't have a halo number?
http://www.ninwiki.com/Capital_G_(halo)
The Capital G single was released in Europe on June 4, 2007, on vinyl only (9"). Trent Reznor made this decision after Interscope initially wanted to release the single in a manner similar to Survivalism. Reznor has expressed his displeasure with multiple-part CD singles, feeling that they force his fans to spend more on a single than they really should.

Because it is a vinyl-only single, Capital G has not been designated as a Halo. To clarify, Rob Sheridan posted the following on The Spiral:
"It will not be a halo. It's a simple 9" vinyl release the record company really wanted to put out - Europe only, I believe. Side A is Capital G, side B is the Dave Sitek Survivalism remix. It will be nice for the people who have the 9" collector box, but we kept a halo # off of it because it doesn't warrant one, and so regular collectors wouldn't feel any pressure to pick it up just for the sake of completeness."

They are from the coast of Mississippi which is only about an hour away from New Orleans. I can only assume its highly likely due to the location and possible connections to engineers, techs, people they know in the biz in the region, etc. I know a lot of people who used to hang out with those guys and its actually pretty random that they got famous and popular. Someone up top green lighted them into mainstream airplay.

If there ever was a NIN lineup capable of pulling off The Fragile live, it was the Tension lineup.

Enough members on stage to handle all the parts necessary, with ease. Excellent stage design ready to upgrade some visuals from the Fragility tour, add new stuff to the songs that have never been played live.

Agreed, but CR seems like it should lead right into Demon Seed. It feels like you're coming to the end.

And it's so weird that after five loud songs, the album takes this sudden turn into Ghosts territory. Maybe slotting TFOAD in earlier would make it less weird — but I haven't tried that yet.

I think it's a good representation of how a live show should work, noise noise noise and then the wash of the final, gentle tracks

Actually I think The Slip is the best live album never made, imo its concept is that of the performance of a live concert

^ Agree, I actually prefer the rehearsal renditions, they're slightly wilder, and the "garage" sound is a great change while we're used to an otherwise extremely airtight, obsessively controlled mastering when it comes to NIN's sound.

it starts in Ghosts territory, though. and the basic blueprint The Slip intentionally follows is Bowie's Low — probably makes more sense if you listen to the vinyl (two different sides, one expected, one not).

I like to believe Trent stuck with the "Fuji" setlist for this tour to coast through it.

I'd argue that's a more "controversial" opinion.

The Fuji set honestly just works. It really does. If you see one of these shows, the band is into it, the visuals are flawless, the audience seems to love it, it just creates a really wonderfully designed show that flows and fits the time limit. It contrasts everything Soundgarden does in their show, it offers a great experience and is just really, wonderfully executed. That entire setlist works really well. It has a flow, it gives and takes the energy, it balances the loud and the soft and manages to feel immediate and complete. Seeing the Fuji set in West Palm Beach, I can thoroughly say that I and the person I went with found it as satisfying as could be, and that was with people too fucking tall with sunglasses on top of their head standing in front of me blocking my view half the time and an older drunk lady who kept falling into my side. Each song follows the last really well, there's a sensible structure to it and it fits a co-headlining summer evening show so well, it's all it needs to be for this tour. Trent seems really into it, his energy is full and even more intense than it was at the Tension show I saw, he's just deeply enthusiastic and the rest of the band seems just as into it. If this is Trent coasting through a tour then he's just that good I guess.

The harmonies in the middle are to hard to 'nail' (LOOL)… in the rehearsal video and the 2009 Wave Goodbye performance, they kinda blow through it without actually hitting the notes; on the Fragility 2.0 version, they used a backing tape with TR's multitracked voices for additional support. I think between the voices of TR, Ilan, Ally and (quiet) Robin they could probably do it for real but it'd take lots of rehearsing.

Since I started listening to NIN right after Fragility, and having my first 4 years of being a fan comprised mostly of rumors of Trent being dead or else giving up music forever, I treat every single tour as "it COULD be my last time seeing NIN live, at least, with this setup/lineup/sound". Just re-watched BYIT after a really long time and somehow fell back in love with the sound of that era. Say what you want but WT-era NIN was all kinds of amazing and probably my favorite touring-leg when it comes to Trent's voice. Perfect combination of his younger self and current more growling vocals and a great transition to current live NIN which is pretty damn amazing in its own right.

Old, old Trent interview that the zine site reposted, I've not seen it before so I imagine others haven't either. He talks mostly about Broken and PHM. key quote: "I like my version of “Suck” a lot better than the Pigface one"

love this quote:

The prediction is that it will be less dense. It will be more demo sounding and less produced. You can bog yourself down with overproduction. “Broken” was overproduced. Too much thought went into that, too many layers of things went in.

so in other words, Trent has been saying this basically for every album. if i wasn't so lazy, I would compile quotes from every era, but trust me

What are your thoughts on NIN tribute bands?
http://www.nin-tribute.com

09-02-2014, 10:47 PM
Tribute bands are a necessary evil, they can actually aid and generate sales of the artist that they tribute. At the same time if they are good and put on a good show you will still long to see the actual artist they are tributing and if they suck you will want to see the original artist. I think for artist that are dead like Jimi Hendrix or Jim Morrison it's a way for that artists music to live on. However for current and still touring artists it does nothing for me. Since I'm a recluse and am just short of agoraphobia the only thing that is getting out of the house is the actual artist.

It's only a joke, my friend. But the guy looks quite a bit like him.

That Camden show was great, the meet & greet was excellent. I remember I got my Ghosts DE book to be signed by the band, Justin saw it and he smiled at me and said "oooh, very nice". Super cool guy.

That day I also met Leo Herrera, backstage...for some reason he knew I spoke Spanish (my looks?) so he decided to speak Spanish to me. He told me he was from Colombia, I didn't know that. Very chill dude, he signed my With Teeth copy. Does anyone know if he kept working with the band in a studio environment? A very little thing that cheers me up that is also a random NIN thought. It has almost seemed to work each and every time.

Successfully introducing Nine Inch Nails to fans of Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, Radiohead, Marilyn Manson (Yes, I have actually met MM fans that never heard of NIN, or just never bothered checking NIN out.) and/or Linkin Park that have never ever heard of NIN before. It's often 99.9% a lock for them to become NIN fans in minutes, or even seconds as I've seen it work out in real life.

And even though it's only happened a few times in my life, it feels very satisfying and pleasant to see it NIN albums work their magic. :) I also have yet to introduce NIN to a Tori Amos fan or a Tool fan that hasn't heard of NIN before either.

*I think I've probably said this before. If so, and you remember, my bad, but I still enjoy it whenever that happens.*

With T & A (giggle giggle) working with the orchestra for the Gone Girl soundtrack maybe it will inspire him to do some kind of one off performance like the `97 Portishead Roseland show... I know he had the string quartet for that Bridge School benefit but that wasn't anything like Portisheads performance or the Gone Girl arrangement...
Just another item for the wish list.

I know he had the string quartet for that Bridge School benefit but that wasn't anything like Portisheads performance or the Gone Girl arrangement...
Just another item for the wish list.

For those who know not of that Portishead performance.

that portishead DVD is my most-watched concert film ever. there's nothing crazy going on in terms of performance, but it is just so compelling to watch. i also adore how they allowed the musicians to dress casually.

"Roseland NYC" by Portishead is one of the greatest concerts 've ever heard, they took an idea that can backfire easily (Metallica and KISS i'm looking at you...) and they ruled ass! I bet Trent can do something similar, yet i don't want to hear just "loud music" over an orchestra, they have to adapt just like Portishead did...

The Bridge School show is the only band + orchestra project (well, rock musician + orchestra) I can remember that didn't end in tears. But I'll check out that Portishead show — first song sounds promising enough.

I imagine he's playing the guitar on Ruiner and stuff like that, even though Trent is playing the solo on the studio version of that. I was listening to My Violent Heart earlier and once the Guitar solo came in, I imagined Robin playing it and Trent playing Tambourine. I'm weird.

As much as I believe that Robin is the definitive live NIN guitarist, every time I listen to recordings of Performance 2007 I always find myself thinking of how insane Aaron's guitar playing was on so many of TDS songs they did. Seriously, what he did on Reptile and The Becoming is incredible sounding and so beyond what I'd expect.

Do it, you won't be disappointed, that concert is so good it gives me goosebumps just to think of it...

Now, on topic: Listening to "Hesitation Marks" the other day i thought it's one of his most diverse works yet: doing Noise, Rock, Electro and even Pop, i consider "The Fragile" his richest musical work, yet HM has to be the most diverse one yet...

Very weird. I came here specifically to post a super random thought about Aaron North, and here he is in the last post.

Anyway, the in-the-works Live release got me watching BYIT, so I've had it on a few times this week. I must have been watching more closely than previous viewings, because even though I know the general playing style AN had, I didn't realize how much energy he has throughout the entire set. It makes me a little sad inside knowing I won't get to see him play with NIN. Would really love to see that dynamic in person.

I might be wrong, but I suppose after years of touring with Pumpkins and David Bowie (especially during 96-97, supporting very electronic Outside and Earthling albums and without extra keyboard personnel in the band) he can play any synth patch you need, not only piano.

His addition of regular piano to The Becoming is very interesting, especially during the "Annie hold a little tighter" part. What was a dark and brooding song becomes beautiful for a few seconds, almost as if the character in TDS has an inkling of hope before descending back into madness.

TGC is one of my favorite songs on any of the remix albums (though I know it's technically not a remix). Would kill to see that live. Guess I had never thought about Tension being a good op for it; I've always kinda assumed it's one of those that's just obscure enough to forever fall into the "never to be played" bucket.

It's seems like I've finally narrowed it down to three websites when it comes to promoting Nine Inch Nails and NIN sites outside of NIN.com. The first two are clearly no-brainers, especially as one that has frequented ETS a lot. I have it in mind a lot, as I've still met NIN fans that have never heard of these sites anyway.

The NIN Hotline - It would seem better if they became fans to the point of following NIN before checking it out, but at the same time, The NIN Hotline paved the way for ETS, and it feels unfair for me to plug ETS without plugging The NIN Hotline anyway. They'd also be in for a real treat if they have no idea about The Meathead Perspective.

Echoing the Sound - To hopefully find me as Kris, and ETS as another place on the Internet to chill and socialize that isn't Facebook and/or Twitter.

The Nine Inch Nails Wiki - Especially for new fans. I also like how informative and organized it is, and how easy it is on the eyes. Wikipedia seems to be a bit of a glaring eyesore to me after a while.

I'm sure this is a very common thought, but I've always figured that a minimum gap of 2 years or 3 years in between Nine Inch Nails albums would seem to be just right aside from the regular 4 years or 5 years. I also only say 4 years, because Pretty Hate Machine was still 4 years old when The Downward Spiral came out.

As nice as it always was to get a new album, 1 year just felt too fast, even though that only happened with Year Zero, Ghosts I-IV and The Slip.

Oh yes, and seeing the gap between The Fragile and With Teeth being called a gap of 6 years is still burnt into my memory because The Fragile was still 5 years old when With Teeth came out.

Yeah, and it's too bad. It happens during slower songs, too, like Find My Way.

i've honestly never understood the "bro" culture that seems to exist around certain aspects of NIN. when i saw them in 2005, there were SO MANY BROS at the show, with their backwards hats and their ultra-misogyny and their spilling their beer all over me (ah, i digress...) and i don't get it. i'm not saying anyone can't enjoy any kind of music, and i'm not an elitist or a hipster that's going to get pissed off because someone else likes the band i do, but i really just don't get how people who generally seem like unintelligent jerks with no regard for anyone but other like-minded white dudes would like something with the emotional depth and complexity of NIN.

/rant

dude I love you muchly but stop commenting in the spotting thread! :-) :-) :-)

as for your comment... yeah, I dont really know. outside of this board, I've really felt pretty alone in my NIN-love for years now, so it's always weird to me to go to see shows and see hundreds of people into them, no matter what subculture they're in

that said, I think NIN has got an amazing reputation for live shows, and people who wanna get fucked up at concerts could do a lot worse than a nin show for raw aggression

Halo Infinity

I thought I'd also take it here. With the "bros" or "jocks" at Nine Inch Nails concerts, I was always under the impression that they just found a way to use the aggression they've gotten from Broken and The Downward Spiral, but clearly not in a good way from the looks of it. I could obviously be wrong, but that's my been my guess so far whenever it came to that topic.

honestly, i don't give a crap what someone wears, i was just using that as an example, because the people who tend to have that attitude at shows are usually dressed like that. i don't like it when anyone is a dick, regardless of bro-status or goth-status. when you're at a concert, the collective audience attitude is important to being able to enjoy the show. if most of the people there are elitist assholes (in one direction or another), you're gonna have a bad time.

@elevenism (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=2475) - After having bad luck with headphones for quite some time, it's pretty sweet knowing that I actually don't have to put the volume all the way up on my Sades headphones whenever I'm listening to the regular version of Pretty Hate Machine. Like Hesitation Marks, it sounded thicker and deeper than it ever did to me before, and it just feels so great knowing that it's only from the regular 1989 version. I'm definitely supporting this brand of headphones, and I hope it lasts.

I also hope that you like it too, should you ever give it a shot. It just occurred to me more and more after testing my Sades headphones on Pretty Hate Machine several times, and thought that I'd state this once more. :D

Kris , i am so fucking bad at physical reality. I would never buy expensive headphones because i would promptly lose or break them.

I've unfortunately gone through the same problem. However, my Sades are just for my computer, and after learning the hard way so many times, I know not to sleep or lie down with headphones ever again, perhaps with the exception of AcousticSheep SleepPhones. (I also have ASMR, so I was even more tempted to do that lots of times.)

I just hope that there's also Sades for iPods as well. In the meantime, I just stuck to using Panasonic again, which I'm cool with anyway. And well, to fit this into another random NIN thought, I noticed that as of now, Pretty Hate Machine, The Fragile, With Teeth and Hesitation Marks are my most favorite Nine Inch Nails albums to test headphones on.

honestly, i don't give a crap what someone wears, i was just using that as an example, because the people who tend to have that attitude at shows are usually dressed like that. i don't like it when anyone is a dick, regardless of bro-status or goth-status. when you're at a concert, the collective audience attitude is important to being able to enjoy the show. if most of the people there are elitist assholes (in one direction or another), you're gonna have a bad time.

Hahaha at bro-status and goth-status assholes at NIN shows. I've seen these tards before. One dude at the 2009 Ninja in NY was all decked out -- in the middle of summer -- in his goth regalia and acting like an elitist asshole to the people outside of his shitty little goth clique. At the security check, he was asked to remove the spiked belt he was wearing, and when he refused because his oversized black Juggalo jeans would have fallen off his scrawny ass, they wouldn't let him in and he threw a little goth hissy fit.

One of the funniest things I've ever seen at a show, NIN or other. Myself and the others around me openly pointed and laughed at this doof as we filed in past him and his bewildered gang of pseudo-misfits. Do not pass go, do not meet Trent, and Livenation keeps your $200 ticket price, asswipe

i should say that this hasn't happened since probably 2005 (in line at the first reno club show, you would've thought i had the plague -- i went by myself and tried to talk to those around me, but had back after back turn once they eyed me up and down). it's like the nin live community (at least to me) as a whole grew up after the wt shows.

yay for that.

Ditto on everything in this quote. I was at that show, and had sort of the same experience at that show and at couple others, lol. I would have talked to ya:). I noticed on this last tour, there seems to have been some maturity..which made it a better experience overall. The people in line still could have been friendlier but the ppl in the crowd during the show were for the most part, very nice and courteous. Was a nice change. Really was the best NIN crowd I have been in. The last show I went to was during LITS...ya, the crowd was much better this time! lol. I was like..ooh, ppl grew up, very cool, this makes it so much better. There was a huge age range this time around too, which could play a part.

once inside the theater, the crowd was great. i was dead center on the rail that looked down on the small pit. i met a girl and her brother who were very nice and a lot of fun to dance with.

how weird was that booth seating?

i guess it was designed for performers like frank sinatra. the booths were a hideous lavender color. a weird but awesome place (and so tiny!) to see a band like nin. totally unforgettable.

i hate myself for selling my f/r/d litho to that guy who used to facilitate the spiral entrances. i got $300 for it, but fuck me for doing that ...

Fresno/Reno/Davis (http://nincatalog.com/item.asp?key=01-90183). The first club show, and the only true litho. IIRC, a bunch were damaged by water (??) so fewer were sold/in circulation

It'll never happen, but damn would it be great if Trent and Atticus were to score a Silent Hill game. That role belongs to Akira Yamaoka, but considering he seems done with the series, and how he's openly cited NIN as a strong influence in the past to begin with, I could see them doing a great job at it.

When do you guys think Trent will stop playing songs like March of The Pigs and Wish live? He's turning 50 soon and for me at least, the thought of him playing these angry songs he wrote decades ago is a bit weird. Assuming that NIN will tour again, when do you think the expiration date for these songs are? I'd assume that would have to be soon. Trent playing March of The Pigs at age 60 is a really crazy thought.

Those songs will get sung until he can't sing anymore. Although I have had enough of hearing Terrible Lie at every show. That one hit its expiration for me like 3 shows ago.

If it feels right, he will continue to do it. I think the one thing he doesn't want to do is put himself out way past his expiration date. He clearly doesn't want to be a nostalgia act and that's why his shows have been much more than just "Hi, here's a song, bye!"

This past weekend I finally watched the movie "Walk The Line". About a year ago (a bit more, maybe) I bought "Live at Folsom Prison" (first Johnny Cash album I've ever had) and was completely moved by it (I would go on record saying this is the best live album I've heard by any artist, for many reasons), and I put "Walk The Line" on the list of movies I wanted to watch, for some reason I delayed it until this past Saturday. What a superb movie. I bring this up in this particular thread because the movie made me realize that Cash was THE artist that should had covered Hurt. And, like TR said, I think Johnny Cash absolutely owns the song now, seeing what he went through. There's that line in the movie, when he is in his house in TN, and he tells June "all I do is hurt everyone around me" or something to that effect. When you hear the lyrics of Hurt, you truly believe that Cash could had penned it easily. What a guy.

If I LOVED Folsom Prison...which Johnny Cash album should I get next?

This should probably go in the Cash thread, but hey: At San Quentin is the kinda obvious answer, a just as good live album at a prison. But I'd also add you should get American IV: The Man Comes Around, because that has Hurt on, along with other great covers.

Nice video! This was one of my fav CoA performances of the tour. I didn't notice at the time how much Trent was into it here, but looking back and comparing to the other shows I was at, he seems a lot more energetic. Maybe cuz it was early in the tour?

I was down in the pit area, and the weird thing is that it was almost 1/3 (or more) empty during this song (SG fans off getting drinks, mostly likely). And dozens of ppl in first several rows were sitting throughout. Meanwhile I was in 100% rock-out mode probably looking like an insane ragdoll :D

Yes. The encore would be TGD concluded by a two hour breakdown with trippy visuals.

When I saw them (Aug. 27th) towards the end of the tour, he was still super into it and twirling around and jamming out during Copy of A. Also threw the mic in the air during The Wretched when he was trying to sing "and it keeps on coming" but the mic wasn't working, got a good laugh out of that.

Haha, pretty awesome. I think when all is said and done, CoA will be one of my fav NIN songs.

First time I saw it was during the live stream of Lolla '13 in Chicago (first time North America saw that set). I'll quote my friend, who was watching with: "Holy God, what is happening :O"

It really is an incredible way to start a show. I especially love when he does a little improv and morphs the opening synth, jamming on it for about 30 seconds like at the Lollapalooza show.

I'd say Copy of A and Somewhat Damaged are the best openers for NIN shows.

The version from Fuji Rock is still the best imo. Great sound, great filming, and you can hear the crowd is really into it. And the whole show is flawless. Once, I watched it focusing on the light show. That particular stream constists almost exclusively of panoramic shots, so one can truely see how elaborate it is.

These past few posts got me listening to all the festival streams. I was listening to this one and LOLed at work when Trent gets pissed and incorporates some new lyrics into Only (around 1 hr, 23 min, 13 sec).

Also, at the end of the song: "Wake the fuck up!" Ha, I can't tell if he's getting mad at tech difficulty or just yelling at the crowd.

The best version of Copy of A is this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKbNWQg-WTw

because Trent's really into it and it has awesome new synths.

edit: plus I think it has the best mix of the two versions before it (tension and festival).
