So, Eddie Vedder covered 'Hurt'? I never knew that. It's not so great, really, but it's interesting in its own way. It's odd that he chose the 'crown of thorns' Cashified lyric. And, it's unfortunate that he didn't do his research before he told the Chicago crowd that he thought the songwriter was from Chicago. Still, it's nice to know that Eddie admire's Trent's songwriting.

Ugh. I can't stand Trent's TPD look. It doesn't make him look like a rapist per se, but it makes him look kinda like the scummy uncle you have to invite to your birthday party. I still love the song though.

Also recall it's his "I'm Afraid Of Americans" look. Makes me laugh when I think of it.

It seems to me like he was trying way too hard with that look. It's like an over the top evil villain in a comic or maybe someone from www.vampirefreaks.com (http://www.vampirefreaks.com).

Also I found this picture on Google and I think it's hilarious for some reason:

So, Eddie Vedder covered 'Hurt'?

I always felt that Eddie was giving a nod to Cash instead of Trent even though he incorrectly acknowledged Trent.

Wait, wasn't the TPD video meant to be ironic or over the top? I think it's supposed to be costumey and stylized*.

Really like the video . . hope I wasn't misinterpreting all these years. ;)

The vinyl version ends at 5:15 so it's safe to assume all after that is the With Decay portion.

that's not quite accurate. the vinyl version fades out the repeating riff, but the CD version does that AND has other music on top the entire time. they're intermingled much closer than the song lengths show.

The vinyl version has a lot of differences track-listing wise, with different songs on it even. Instead of Ripe (With Decay) it's simply Ripe, and ends at five minutes and fifteen seconds, while the CD version (and I think cassette?) runs past that and has (With Decay) on the title.

I just noticed he's actually wearing TWO necklaces. The longer black one with the thingie on it didn't catch my eye until I was on a bigger screen. The gold pimp chain is really my area of intrigue.

Trent should've ditched the NIN moniker in '92 and become the original 2 Chainz.

It makes me wonder what would've been thought and said if he actually kept this look through TF era. It's always been one of my favorite looks of his. It also seems like he had two hairstyles that were just as long in the PHM era, which I've also liked.

Why not both? ;) Although, Nine Inch Nails specifically is the music and all. Perhaps it's no wonder why those topics and pictures were discussed a lot more in those Trent Reznor Appreciation threads at NIN.com.

As for a Nine Inch Nails thought pertaining to his music, I'd ballpark the next release to be out some time around 2015-2017, assuming that he's aiming to beat yet another 5-year wait. :p

2016 would also seem to be almost just as good too. It would seem like a gap of 2-3 years in between albums would seem to be pretty normal and decent. I could also see how 1 year in between albums would be far too soon though, even though it was a pleasant surprise to have seen Year Zero, Ghosts I-IV, and The Slip being released in under the span of 2 years. And yes, that also sounds just about right and far more likely to happen too.

The only thing is, I loved HM and it was because of the time it took I think, I don't want an album just rushed out even though I would want a tour as soon as possible!

I was doing a list of what the most played NIN songs are that I have seen at the 13 shows I have attended : no song was played at all 13 shows
Wish - 12 times
March of the Pigs / Hurt / Gave Up - 11 times
Head Like a Hole - 10
The Hand that Feeds / Closer - 9
Survivalism / Piggy - 7
Terrible Lie / Burn - 6
Frail / The Wretched / Reptile / Eraser - 5

These are the top 15 and I'm surprised that I've seen Eraser that many as it doesn't feel like I've seen it 5 times. I also was surprised I've only seen Only twice, I think I've almost heard other people moan about it and figured I'd heard it more than I have

I've seen quite a few obscure songs though, mostly courtesy of the Sonisphere festival set - like Lights in the Sky, I Do Not Want This, Gone, Still. I've also seen Home once and Ruiner. I guess Wish and Gave Up are the most overplayed - I really don't feel like I've had enough of March of the Pigs or Piggy though

2-3 years wouldn't seem all that rushed to me, but perhaps 3-4 years would be a better regular gap in between albums, should they become completed and released in under 5 years. I'm also still all for more tours.

I'm so used to the Things Falling Apart version, and it's always been a favorite of mine, but I'm guessing this is the album version, and just, wow. Is it just me or is there a sample from The Downward Spiral (song) in the intro?

I don't like Radiohead. But many people love "Creep" because they like the lyrics, they think it's touching and beautiful, etc.
"All the Love in the World" talks about feeling lost, rejected and unworthy and it is SO much better than "Creep" (both the lyrics and the music). It gives me chills every time I listen to it.
How can people not know and praise this wonderful, poignant song.
I agree with you, when With Teeth was originally streamed online before being released, I listened to the beginning of the ATLITW out of curiosity and heard it on crappy computer speakers, but the percussion still really drew me in because of the way it changed constantly and sounded organic, and then hearing the song on a proper stereo system was the aural equivalent of when Dorothy steps into the colour world of Oz. Love that song, one of my NIN favourites across the catalogue!

This review touches on All the Love in the World http://www.drawerb.com/2005/06/20/nine-inch-nails-with-teeth-interscope/ from someone who was originally taking a negative stance on the album.

This is another review of With Teeth which I love and was pointed out in another thread by @allegro (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=76)
https://blogcritics.org/nine-inch-nails-with-teeth-trent/

I just think that to get any sort of acclaim past the existing fanbase a song has to get released as a single unfortunately

(although I like Radiohead, I much prefer the choral version of Creep that was on the Social Network trailer)

its totally stupid, but things like this -- meathead, the font, the jumbled text -- all of that makes me crazy nostalgic for when that was happening. everything felt super exciting. and then I went to the With Teeth listening party, not having liked THTF that much, and I was terrified that my 5 years of faith post Fragile would be wasted... and then that break in ATLITW kicks in and I just couldn't stop smiling. Great times.

-I thought that this would be better off to be continued in this thread instead of the Random NIN Questions thread.-

@sheepdean (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=350) @kleiner352 (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=4417) - In case I didn't, I just wanted to make it clear that I don't think there's anything wrong with liking With Teeth more than The Fragile. As a matter of fact, it was always nice for me to see With Teeth get more love and appreciation on ETS this time around.

I also don't believe it makes you less of a fan, or ignorant, just because you like one album more than another. When would it stop? It would be awful/unrealistic to have to like any/all the albums in a "right" order anyway.

And you also have a point about being a moderate fan, sheepdean. I think I knew one in real life. He still likes NIN though, but he wasn't too fond of anything beyond The Downward Spiral. He actually liked The Fragile, but considered it to be a bit of an unbalanced mess of an album, and everything from With Teeth and beyond was just "meh" to him. There was another one I knew that was on board until With Teeth, but he somehow ended up liking The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo soundtracks.

I completely disagreed with his reasons for Trent being too old to write the lyrics he wrote for With Teeth though, while trying to pander to a younger audience, but he admitted to me that the actual music was good, so he still didn't have any gripes with the actual music.

Anyway, I just wanted to take the time to clear that up. This also goes to show that I also can't assume what the majority of the fan-base thinks just based on what a couple of people say on the Internet or even in real life. Thank you for reminding me about that. :)

i really get annoyed by this myth and idea people cling on to that age automatically makes you less angry, or that once you're a certain age or get married or have kids suddenly you become all kinds of happy all the time! It's just ridiculous, I think Trent said it best in I do not want this - "don't you tell me how I feel"?

I read a really annoying review of Hesitation Marks on this theme that was suggesting he wrote about chilling in the garden with his wife and kids digging the vegetables - like does this guy really think Trent does his own gardening?? also he seemed to be saying he should write country music because of marriage and kids - what?

I read a really annoying review of Hesitation Marks on this theme that was suggesting he wrote about chilling in the garden with his wife and kids digging the vegetables - like does this guy really think Trent does his own gardening?? also he seemed to be saying he should write country music because of marriage and kids - what?
Yeah, I don't get it either. :p

Country music is home to some of the most depressed, miserable shit in the world. Trent referenced a Hank Williams lyric on "While I'm Still Here" because he was the original emo.
I guess my knowledge of country music was gleaned from a programme called Americas top 10 narrated by the late Casey Kasem where the top few records seemed to be by country acts we'd never heard of in the UK and were always interminably boring to me aged 13! I liked islands in the stream I suppose, but never delved deep into it

i really get annoyed by this myth and idea people cling on to that age automatically makes you less angry, or that once you're a certain age or get married or have kids suddenly you become all kinds of happy all the time! It's just ridiculous, I think Trent said it best in I do not want this - "don't you tell me how I feel"?

you know what it is? people with kids and stuff don't have enough time to wallow in their misery the way people without do, so it just gives the appearance otherwise

no, but you can choose to try and work on it

if I'm being charitable to caro, I think that's what they were trying to say

either way, this is a more complicated thing than I know how to deal with, and as someone who struggles with truly crippling depression himself, it's a fine line

High school just finished for me 10 years ago to this very day in June 25, 2004. (It would've been 11 years ago in June 25, 2003, if I got along with school better, since I was born in 1985.)

There was only Pretty Hate Machine up to The Fragile, as everybody would know, but the nostalgia is strong with me right now. :p Even if I only became a fan in late 2002, it definitely was quite the ride for the last half of high school, and why all of those releases give me high school memories.

I haven't been around that long. Didn't even really check out NIN's website, despite them being my favorite band, until The Slip came out and I gave it a peek.

I started downloading random NIN songs and remixes and remixes that were actually done by Danny but attributed to NIN in the golden age of Napster, right around 2000/2001. Got really into it, and wanted to buy a few cds. Then I scoured the internet for info around the time nin.com was starting to go into bleedthrough mode. Found the hotline around the same time I think, and just kinda regularly checked things until everything started happening. Joined The Spiral initially for the ticket benefits, and The Spiral just kinda got me into the idea of being part of a NIN based forum, so I started lurking ETS too since it was older and so had more back information.

I consider myself a new fan, even though I started collecting 12-13 years ago.

That's awesome! I was in middle school around the time WT came out. A friend played me Closer because he thought the lyrics were funny. That's where my NIN story starts. Quickly tried to get all the albums but couldn't get Broken or PHM. I didn't know what Linewire or Napster was.

Regarding future tours, as long as he keeps bringing Robin back, the band can consist of anyone else. I've loved every drummer I've seen, ~most~ every bassist, and Ally is the only keys/synth/electronic weird stuff member I've seen, and I like him too. Any incarnation of the live band is fine with me so long as Robin is there.

i felt like paz fit better in APC than she did in zwan, though. she seemed really nervous around billy, as opposed to how comfortable and confident she seemed in APC. wonder if billy has power-struggle issues with his bassists?

Are the lyrics to Where Is Everybody? the longest amount of lyrics in a NIN song?

>>

Did you happen to catch
Or did it happen so fast
What you thought would always last
Has passed you by
Is everything speeding up
Or am I slowing down
Just spinning around
And I don't know why
All the pieces don't fit
Thought I really didn't give a shit
I never wanted to be like you
But for all I aspire
I am really a liar
And I'm running out of things I can do

I'd like to stay
But every day
Everything pushes me further away
If you could show
Help me to know
How it's supposed to be
Where did it go?

Pleading and
Needing and
Bleeding and
Breeding and
Feeding
Exceeding
Where is everybody?
Trying and
Lying
Defying
Denying
Crying and
Dying
Where is everybody?

Well, okay, enough
You've had your fun
But come on there has got to be someone
That hasn't yet become
So numb
And succumb
And
God damn I am so tired of pretending
Of wishing I was ending
When all I'm really doing is trying to hide
And keep it inside
And fill it with lies
Open my eyes?
Maybe I wish I could try

Pleading and
Needing and
Bleeding and
Breeding and
Feeding
Exceeding
Where is everybody?
Trying and
Lying
Defying
Denying
Crying and
Dying
Where is everybody?

I tried to make it as accurate as possible, cutting out bits printed but not sung etc... Words or phrases repeated multiple times like, "Terrible Lie" during the chorus of the song would be counted as two words even thought it is sung many times during each chorus. Or the end of All the Love in the World is only counted once. Everyone cool with that?

And I didn't count covers, no Suck or Get Down Make Love.

If there are songs I missed, and I know there are, just let me know and I can add them.

sheepdean

I think Fragile should include all tracks - Appendage, 10 Miles High and The New Flesh all have lyrics after all.

And as annoying as it is, really contractions are two words, so a few songs have more (Zero Sum especially, as the listed "all we've done" is sung as "we have"). But generally the list is a-ok, interesting how the only 300+ word songs are from Year Zero, the album that's telling a defined story.

Though if we counted unsung lyrics of With Teeth, I'm sure a few of those would bump past too.

Pigface wrote the song, because Pigface is a bunch of musicians ever-changing. Trent wrote the lyrics though. Not the first band to cover a song from a previous one though.

Anybody have a decent vector image of the Sin-NIN logo? My friend (or maybe my ex whom I'm getting hot with again) is getting a tattoo of it and needs a good reference picture. This one below is the best I could find, and really, it's quite awful. All them filled spaces and curvy lines, just no.

I'm probably not alone here, but for quite some time, I've thought that songs like The Collector, Every Day Is Exactly The Same, Getting Smaller, and The Line Begins To Blur can be very relatable to some people's experiences in schools and workplaces. As for other songs outside of With Teeth, perhaps that can sometimes be the case with Down In It, Last, Happiness In Slavery, Echoplex, and Copy Of A.

The love and appreciation of With Teeth has also cheered me up over the past few years here. :)

Yeah, a lot of W_T, Broken and whatnot deal with the monotony of the everyday, sometimes it being addiction cycles, or relationships, or work or what have you, I've always felt that a lot of With Teeth is about that. Just that numbness that comes with the repetition of whatever it is that's at hand. Even on Year Zero, The Greater Good kind of mirrors that with the sense of slow indoctrination that just absorbs you in the constant loop.

Did Trent ever talk in detail about how the concept went from WT (and possibly started in BleedThrough?) to YZ? I mean, I know the basics, about the "changing package" and "essay" and song titles that weren't songs on WT. I would be really interested in hearing more about it.

My Violent Heart (Pirate Robot Midget)
The Perfect Drug (Aphrodite)

I'm just saying the lyrical content reminds me of how I was feeling in 2002/2003. I was just going through the motions back then and I've had this feeling several times since then. I really like the song, but the lyrics are just depressing. Trent really knows how to hit the nail on the head.

The question "What's a NIN?" has been asked to me before in real life. It's usually "What's NIN?" or "What does NIN mean?" though. Even only after hearing those questions a few times, it's what always made me want to say and write Nine Inch Nails whenever I happen to bring up NIN for the first time around.

I also still thought the idea for numbering the releases with the word halo was sort of cool as well. It was also nice to see how the idea came from Depeche Mode's STUMM for albums and BONG for singles. I was also about to ask about the idea for the halos until I looked it up... hence reminding me yet again to always consult NINWiki first.

I'm not as much of a fan of "stripped down" stuff as a lot of people seem to be, but I don't really think that album is that stripped down. there's some insane stuff going on on the instrumentals, and they have a focus that doesn't really feel there on 85% of Ghosts (to me)

that said, while I loved and still love And All That Could Have Been, listening to it with fresh ears I realized JUST how much of a Hurt re-tread it is -- a really good one, but a re-tread -- and understood why it didn't make the Fragile cut

i'm really not hearing that at all. they're both ballads, obviously, but the feel is completely different, not to mention the wildly different arrangements. the comparison is flabberghasting to me. are "The Way Out is Through" and "The Great Below" retreads of one another too? is "Beside You in Time" a retread of both? (BYIT and TWOIT are even the same tempo!) i don't get it. you'd have an easier time selling me on "Right Where It Belongs" being the "Hurt" retread or "Another Version of the Truth" retreading "The Frail," but i'd still strongly disagree.

actual retreads: large portions of YZ and The Slip + HTDA song formulas. i'm glad HM broke that cycle.

I'm usually around people that aren't into listening to albums and/or attending shows, and it seems like the majority of NIN fans are album/concert people. Another thing I still couldn't help but notice is how conversations about music in real life are sometimes, or even often tremendously different than the ones I've seen on ETS or almost any other forum for that matter. I'm still very impressed and overwhelmed at how knowledgeable people are about music here, aside from being album/concert people. (With most of them also collecting CDs and vinyl.)

I didn't know where else to post this, but I somehow managed to squeeze it in with a random NIN thought. ETS also has to be one of the forums with the best music section ever. One can certainly learn a lot just from lurking in it.

*This also isn't to say that there's anything wrong with not being into albums and/or concerts either. I'm not even a big concert person myself.*

I am interested in "super lip gloss Reznor" though, if anyone has it?
This picture always seemed to remind me of the Down In It video.

I know you mean stylistically, but just from an appearance standpoint, Down In It was during his long-hair days. He shaved his head on the RevCo tour in 1990, so his short hair phase was from the Sin tour and throughout 1991. This probably would have been around Lollapalooza or so.

Watching the Vevo footage for the Blu-ray that was supposed to be available already (:p). The live drums on Copy of a are so fucking awesome. I can't wait to have this in, what I presume will be, DTS HDMA.

Looks like he's channeling his inner-Morrissey

Dude, I nearly pissed on myself laughing.

I wonder what are Trent's thoughts on Moz? For some reason, I don't think a lunch date between the two would end well.

While I'm aware and understand that it's highly unlikely to see Kinda I Want To, The Only Time and Ringfinger being performed live at a concert, it's still something I'd wish for, as they still seem to be among my most favorite Pretty Hate Machine songs live.

Whatever the source, i've got $20 for a medium. Best NIN merch in a while!
'Only' on the tour rehearsal bootleg is the only time I've liked that song. Its ...humorous

Have you ever looked at page 2 in The Clique's "Donor Lounge" forum? Maybe at a thread started by me.

When music stores were more of a thing even back in at least 2002-2006, I sometimes found a Nine Days and no Nine Inch Nails in the N section. And for those of you that don't know yet, I started with the year 2002 because that's when I first started buying NIN CDs, and even if lots of record stores were liquidated around the late 2000s, there were still a lot more of them back in 2006. This sometimes happened to me a lot in FYE, Best Buy and Circuit City. I'd also find the Nine Days section first, but that also makes sense since it's in alphabetical order anyway.
