I think there was also a very small clip of a roller coaster ride Trent Reznor was on in Closure. That picture also reminded me of that. I wonder if I'm wrong though, as it's been a while since I've watched it all the way through from start to finish.

Soooo, along with NIN, I have been waiting to see if/when Bob Dylan is coming back to my region. To me, I will always see Dylan every chance I get. His catalog is so large I want to hear every song I can by him and I love the way his arrangements and setlists will change with every show over the months. The only songs you might be guaranteed to hear are All Along the Watchtower and Like a Rolling Stone and even still, that's not 100%. I was thinking how cool it would be for NIN to do a tour like that. Completely unpredictable every night.

I was only 9 during this performance. Little did I know would I end up attending the Nine Inch Nails concert in Madison Square Garden at NYC around 8 years later. (Well, it was almost 9 years, but the tour date didn't pass by yet.) Watching this made me think of that part of my life at the time, as I've always lived in NYC anyway, and have seen NIN at MSG, but in 2005. I was in the 3rd grade at Immanuel Lutheran School in Whitestone, Queens. I'm sure I would've enjoyed the fuck out of it even at that age as I was drawn to rock music in general, even though I didn't really get into music until I turned 13.

And memories and nostalgia aside, I definitely enjoyed watching this bootleg, and have always thought that it deserved to get shared more and more. It's also about time that I post it in the Nine Inch Nails group I'm added to on Facebook. :)

I'm only going by my feelings and not any actual context, and well, depending on my emotions, A Warm Place sometimes sounds romantic, jovial, placid, or serene, and at other times, it sounds introspective, brooding, and depressing. I've always liked instrumentals and songs that can make me feel more than one kind of emotion. A Warm Place seems like it can go well with sentimental slides and montages. It really was no surprise to me that Closure ended that way, and it really made me smile, while not forgetting to consider Trent's life-story, so it still left me feeling bittersweet.

Aside from Richard Cheese, I really don't see the point of covering it - not in a protective way, but because everyone covers it in the same way. Fuck with the song, change the beat, the melody, do something interesting, don't just do karaoke.

But that probably doesn't sell.

I feel that way about every cover. If you're not going to do something unique with the song (I.e. Get Down Make Love, one of my favorite covers of all time), don't bother.

This is obviously nothing new, but I've noticed that The Fragile is definitely the Nine Inch Nails album for me to listen to whenever I get lonely and/or become reclusive. I suppose it's because loneliness and an overall sense of loss clearly go hand in hand, while I sometimes ponder about what else Trent Reznor must've felt, and what he thought while he was hiding in between The Downward Spiral to The Perfect Drug, and then from The Perfect Drug to The Fragile. (And when I say what else, I meant other than we he has already admitted.)

Speaking of the gaps again, I sometimes can't decide which gap was the most suspenseful, but perhaps I'll also ask that in the Random NIN Questions thread.

The Downward Spiral to The Fragile?

The Fragile to With Teeth?

The Slip to Hesitation Marks? (Although for me, it didn't really feel or look like that much of a gap.)

I'm measuring the dynamic range of albums using the Dynamic Range Meter for foobar2000 (http://dr.loudness-war.info/). The stereo mix in the SACD and appears to be more compressed than the original CD (DR7 as opposed to DR8; the higher the number, the more dynamic the mix is), while the surround mix has DR10, a wider dynamic range than any other format (except for the vinyl release and the unmastered instrumentals). Of course, I know Leviathant has done a similar test before (http://theninhotline.net/features/halo.profiles/tds/), but this test proves that even the slightest changes in a remaster can sacrifice information when the signal is compressed, while a mix of an album that's completely re-done for surround speakers can yield impressive results (the 5.1 mix of The Social Network is also incredibly dynamic compared to the stereo mix on DVD/CD/BD). It seems TR and Co. are keeping things tight and compressed for the stereo mixes (which are naturally going to be more mainstream and therefore less "audiophile mastered"), while storing the more dynamic mixes on vinyl and 5.1 surround. Dragon Tattoo may not be available in 5.1, but the surround mixes done for the movie were astounding.

You can see some DR measurements for the various TDS releases here (http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list?artist=&album=the+downward+spiral).

seasonsinthesky
03-14-2014, 03:18 PM
the thing about measuring the DR of surround mixes is that it can't account for the actual loudness we experience when we listen to it; you can't just add the volumes of all the channels together because that doesn't account for the physical spacing in the room (which affects how loudly we perceive something due to the distances affecting the apparent volume that we perceive), and even if you do the math to figure out how to add in the dB differences caused by distance, it can't account for how differently we perceive the front and rear speaker pairs (since we don't hear 'equally' from the front and back, off and on axis, etc.). with the case of TDS, i'm willing to bet the surround and stereo mixes were both limited to the same degree, but because the surround mix splits things out of the front stereo pair and distributes them to the back/center/LFE, the DR measurement can't properly measure it. i'm pretty sure whoever submitted the surround mix to the database probably did a surround mixdown, which is when software combines the channels into a stereo file and reduces the volume so it won't clip, defeating the purpose of even measuring the surround mix DR in the first place.

wizfan

Yes, that is exactly what they did, as evidenced by the description. As for the 5.1 DR thing, it does make sense. Center and LFE have typically less information, which makes the DR meter count them as channels with higher dynamic range.

Every now and then I come back to head like a hole and I love every goddman version of it! whether it's the original track on PHM or the numerous live versions. Every line up brings an element of this song to the foreground that's not as present on the others. It's such a great fucking live track and I'll never get tired of it or stop shouting the chorus. Ever!

Only thing that hasn't gotten better over the years is that Trent's not joining the rest of the band on the chrous anymore like on AATCHB. Other than that this is one of the few tracks that I'll always be the most excited for how it will sound this time around.

TR cited early Public Enemy as a huge influence on YZ. Also, he was working with Saul Williams' producers CX KiDTRONiK and Thavius Beck on The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust! while producing NIN simultaneously.

I would recommend you Live on I-5 (a live album that shows SG at their peak, 1997, right before they called it quits. It has a great variety of songs) or the Telephantasm Deluxe Edition (greatest hits). Otherwise, I'd start with Superunknown, then, Down on the Upside, then Badmotorfinger. If you get into their canon albums, then I'd dig into their early albums.

We all complain about "Hurt" closing shows on yet another tour, but I can't tell you how many times I've seen some variation of this in regular people's reviews of shows lately: "They closed their set with Hurt and I’m still in shock. To say it was a spiritual experience is an understatement."

Am I correct in saying the only songs that have closed NIN shows have been Head Like A Hole, Hurt and In This Twilight?

Down in It closed out the Skinny Puppy tour, since HLaH was not written yet.
Dead Souls closed out the Helmet club tour.

And, of course, there have been little one-off's here and there where the show ended on non-typical tracks due to guest artists, injuries/illnesses, no encore, etc.

There are some fantastic PHM era recordings on RITC. It's amazing to hear so many PHM songs brought to life in such a different tone than on the record; you really can hear what TR meant when he said his live band influenced the sound of Broken.

I hate people screaming at the shows so fucking much.
So I start listening to Sacramento 2005 recording... A few seconds into Pinion comes in a scream which can only be produced by a pig being cut alive, and it doesn't stop through the whole track. You'd think she'd get tired by the end of it (nearly two minutes) but nooooooooo, as soon as Love is not Enough start she fucking loses herself... only to get louder when drums start, even louder when bass comes in. By the Trent opens his mouth, you can't hear shit, only screaming.
Now repeat the above for every one of next 20 songs.

The recording is awesome and thanks for sharing it! And a girl of course calms down a bit as the show goes, but boy was she annoying in between songs.

Oh yeah, forgot about "The Warning" and yes the remix of "Survivalism" has that Hip-hop/Rap vibe i was talking about, even the live version with Saul Williams is rapped, i heard once that Trent Reznor wanted to work with Dr Dre in the 90's, i guess his collaboration with Saul was what he had in mind...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V9O8fxwNw8
Saul Williams should come out every time NIN plays that song.

On another note, today I watched them play ATL as a 4 piece on YT, it looks like Ally and Robin sing the falsetto parts Lisa and Sharlotte did. Has anyone heard robin sing like that before? I have only heard his yelling, never noticed his voice had that range.

Also, Trent should go on Dancing with the Stars and do his weird floppy arm dance he does live now. And his leaning back and forward dance.

Some people need to be busy. Maybe he was excited to be entering into marriage and fatherhood, then realized "oh crap...I miss traveling and performing" and decided to head back out. I get pretty burned out on tour, but after a couple weeks at home I can't stand the thought of being in the same city for more than a few days at a time. Who knows.

I'm sure NIN is still a labour of love - after all, comparing the effort to financial reward ratio of doing NIN (18 months to write, then promotion, touring cycle) and sitting on his arse in LA writing 3 or 4 film scores a year, I bet the latter is more lucrative in the end

He does a 'rock' model because it would cost too much to take high-end production out of the US. Either that, or the rest of the world always draws the short straw.
To be honest, I prefer an evolving setlist, though.

You mean you think his mostly raspy backing vocals are horrendous? Or have you personally heard him sing in a non-rock concert setting, or when he used to sing in a choir?

Also, a couple seconds of casually harmonizing at a rehearsal while fleshing out ideas is a piss poor example of Robin actually singing (re: the Tension behind the scenes video).

I get that some people just don't like a certain singing voice, but I assume most of you haven't heard his actual voice and should reserve judgement for, you know, when you actually hear him sing for real. I personally like his backing vocals and think they suit NIN. But they don't reflect his singing abilities as a whole.

I can't say I noticed ever, but are there any videos that you think encapsulate this on youtube?

One example that comes to mind is "Even Deeper" from Tension, the part "Everything that matters is gooone". He would highlight "gone", "become" and "overcome" from the chorus, screaming, really terrible scream, it was specially grating when you had such amazing singers (Lisa and Sharlotte) and you had this guy ruining that verse/beautiful singing by the girls. See
http://youtu.be/ZlABAPWGE1E?t=2m9s

(it was more obvious if you were at the concert, the mix of that video doesn't highlight this problem, but you can kind of hear what I'm talking about).

Another example is The Wretched. Sure, he has always sung the part "Now you know this is what it feels like" with that bad scream of his, but it became more obvious during Tension, because again, Lisa and Sharlotte would sing that part BEAUTIFULLY, and mixed with Robin's vocals, it was clear that something was not right there. I liked The Wretched before, but the backup singers made the song a lot more interesting, the only thing that didn't fit that picture were Robin's vocals.

I'm sure his actual singing voice is a whole different animal. I listened to All Time Low from Melbourne, with Robin singing with Ally "get down on the floor" on falsetto and it was very nice to hear, good replacement for the backup singers. His screaming is just not right.

For me, the song just doesn't speak to me the way ITT does. Hurt? Okay, show's over, time to leave. ITT, on the other hand, gave me chills and had me a little choked up at the end of the LITS set I saw.

I would also agree here. Hurt is a good song, but I'd rather hear something else, I think it has run its course as a set closer. In This Twilight, on the other hand...I saw it live for the first time in the Houston LITS stop, went to the show without reading any setlist spoilers for this tour, so I obviously did not know that ITT was going to close to the show. And holy cow did it hit me like a wall of bricks. It's absolutely the best finale I've seen for a NIN show...the city burning background, the beautiful Zero-Sum piano outro...it all made the sense to me. With that performance, I think ITT trascended its "end of the world" theme from Year Zero. I was extremely pleased to hear that song played again, with the same visuals, during the Tension show I saw. Once again I was moved beyond words.

What's actually funny (in a sad way), that both the festival tour and the 2014 shows are, in fact, nostalgia acts. He did nothing brave and original setlist-wise (maybe the HTDA stuff, but I'm not so sure how happy you are with those songs when it could be rare NIN songs instead - an act you actually paid for). Sure, for the Australian tour, not 8, not 6, not 5, but 4 (!) people played Hurt and Wish.

I wouldn'be so salty if he had not hype it the way he did. More things from The Fragile, his currently favourite NIN album. Riiiiight.

Festivals don't count, if you don't play the hits then you're not doing it right. Talk all you want about "fighting the power" and "fuck the system", but the fans who came to see Hurt and Wish will leave the show super pissed if they don't see those songs. And yes, those fans matter in a festival setting. I'd argue those fans matter in every setting, but that's not something I want to get into.

Even as someone who'd really want to see a Still-esque show, I'm not sure stretching it out to 2 hours and 24 songs would be a good idea. Not sure if it'd work with NIN's popularity, but something like an hour-long show in a smaller venue might be nice. Almost no chance of that being a full tour with dozens of cities, though, IMO. Well, maybe if a Still-esque album of all-new songs came out or something.

I got spoiled by the early Rob days of "here are 5 photos from each show" uploads, and being vocal about things. Now that Rob seems to have more art direction responsibility, the areas where he did a lot of work before just aren't able to have as much time and energy devoted to them. Maybe he should hire a photo assistant ;)

Yeah, but let's not kid ourselves. What he was doing at 18-19 (however old he was when Trent found him) was way ahead of what I was doing at that age. At least, in the web/design game. Haven't seen his early photo work, now that I think about it. When did he start actually shooting the shows? Are there any archives of that somewhere?

Rob's a great photographer, but he rarely impresses me as a designer/art director. Some of his Photoshop work is pretty cool, but his web design always seemed rather bland to me. The Slip's and first EP HTDA's backdrops and stuff were interchangeable, and the "screen" photography for Welcome oblivion quickly became boring.

Rob's a great photographer
Eh, more like Rob's a good photographer with great access/opportunity. His performance shots have gotten better recently, but I've still seen better done by fans. His wife's photography is really better in my opinion, at least her technical skill and studio work. Rob is more of a design/illustration guy, anyhow. That's what he went to school for, that's what the majority of his portfolio is. He's an art director. I much prefer his earlier work, though. TFA/AATCHB and WT was his best work, in my opinion. Then again, I have a bias toward minimalistic macro photography, and microscopy art.

Maybe "And All That Could Have Been" is meant to refer to what the artwork could've been like, I don't know. I just really like the mental image I have of Trent, after spending so much time putting the live album together and then all the work on Still, getting sent that piece of "artwork" and having to look at it and decide "This is fine." It's like whoever made it (I want to say it was the same person who did the actual artwork for the Fragile, which if I'm remembering correctly is really tough to believe) realized at the last minute that they had a commission and just said "I'll put the words on it but we'll print it on cloth, that'll make it seem special."

Oh and the Head Like a Hole cover always amazed me in its laziness, too. At least with that though the special picture sleeve edition looks great.

I don't mind it so much as all the other variations of AATCHB are pretty nice. Plus the deluxe edition feels nice and fuzzy on your fingers, and the drunk looking letters reflect the same artistic typography from the era.

Whenever I see the standard CD version of AATCHB, though, I always see it as the NIN logo floating among clouds during sunset, with the yellow color being the sun reflecting.

Still reminds me of a blurry little boat floating in the middle of nowhere.

And the DVD of AATCHB is apparently a photo being shot up from inside a grave or a hole or something looking upward to the sky.

Oh and the Head Like a Hole cover always amazed me in its laziness, too.

Assuming you're talking about the US version, it might have been rushed because the UK version art was meant to be the standard art. Apparently, TVT didn't want to pay for color printing. Some quotes from Trent (http://www.theninhotline.net/archives/articles/manager/display_article.php?id=327):

Oh, try to find the import 'h.l.a.h.' single. It has the artwork that was intended for the original release but was rejected by TVT because it cost too much (it had color). It also has a cool other version (like you need one) of 'h.l.a.h.'

The colored HLAH single (the import) is the way i intended it to be released, but TVT released the black & white one with all the extra (i think boring) mixes & ugly cover.

(I always thought TVT rejected it because they thought it wasn't cool enough or something, but I guess I made that up.)

I definitely like the texture of the deluxe edition; I remember having no idea that it was cloth-bound. When I actually found it it was in a bargain bin for something around 15 dollars, and for whatever reason at the time I thought it was a rare release and freaked out. Couldn't wait to get my hands on it. When I took it out of the package and actually felt it, it was incredibly cool and just really unusual. Even though I know it's far from special/valuable now (I was an extremely novice collector at the time) I still love having it simply because it was the first sense of "rarity" I ever had while buying a NIN item.

it was indeed David Carson, but working with Rob Sheridan as well this time. don't forget TR has to OK any artwork too. it's not like he just let them loose and said yes. the drab grey has a purpose, whatever that may be. (personally, i'd say it suits Still better, especially the feeling of "Adrift and at Peace" and "Gone, Still." maybe that's why it's on the deluxe version.)

the 'drunk typography' interpretation is disturbingly fitting, considering how soon TR entered rehab after Halo 17 came out.

Still reminds me of a blurry little boat floating in the middle of nowhere.

the official artwork PDF that comes with Still on iTunes has a wider cover with either a part of a submarine or a jet engine (how dark if it's underwater...) on the left.

also, Carson said (http://www.ninwiki.com/Halo_17#Artwork) the top of the AATCHB DVD cover is looking out of an old, rusty bomb shelter.

honestly, all of these sound more and more related to the 'bottom of the hole before rehab' interpretation.

Not sure if that's only a modern problem. Seems to me like a lot of bands have had different ways of getting over looking bored or silly, whether it's dancing around and antics or looking very formal and uniform so you don't pay attention to them . . . They can end up looking silly in retrospect anyway - artificial, I guess.

Anyway, not saying I disagree, but I prefer bands looking silly or bored over the alternative of playing only music or venues that look cool.

And, speaking of looking silly, did anyone else watch the Capital Cities concert on the Lollapalooza live stream? ;)

well, yes and no

it's pretty modern in that there's a lot more 'knob-tweakin' and backing tracks going these days. like in this one, Ilan is (barely) playing (what looks like) Maschine. had he been actually playing drums, you've got way more of a visual presentation already. this is an aesthetic choice here, and it's one that just doesn't really do it for me. but it's all good.

Isn't this a product of having an 8 piece band at this point though - when they went down to a 4 piece in Australia people seemed to have more complaints of too much being put on backing tracks than they did in Tension (although I haven't seen either, so I guess I'm just going on what people say in the tour journals / twitter etc)

It's probably not just about being humble, although I'm sure that's a little of it. It's probably mostly wrapped up in the whole idea of challenging himself, discomfort used as a tool for growth and discovery, not getting lazy and bored. That sort of thing. It's admirable. I might have missed the part you're talking about specifically, but I thought it was not just about being bored with that style of NIN, but wanting to challenge himself and the band by pushing it in a different direction. It could be that in these past legs he's pushing himself (and the band) in a way that's more subtle. Maybe the interaction between the band members is different or something like that. (Like, maybe he asked the rest of the band what they wanted to do on this leg. ;))

But, to answer your question, no, I'm definitely interested in seeing more experimentation from NIN live. If you think about it, aggressive NIN was at some point an experiment, definitely not an obvious evolution from PHM. But that was a while ago . . .

i think AATCHB will always win for me — it sounds much fuller because of the bass synth, and Robin's plucking + e-bow guitar later are much more satisfying, imo, than the studio cut.

Reznor's not Nina Simone nor someone who is going to radicalize their catalog nightly-
what'd be cool for NIN to do is: instead of having one sex song per masochistic, instrospective LP, have fewer cathartic tracks amongst a sex-jam LP.

agreed, i guess, but the live version is a much better interpretation, i think... it's got a cool intro that the arrangement desperately needed. the only problem left, imo, is that the song just refuses to end; at this point i'd take the NIN-cliché-sudden-ending-out-of-nowhere after the last chorus than the unnecessary-NIN-cliché "just can't stop"-stop after the usual buildup (a la THTF, LY, GG, etc.).

I actually really like CBH. It worked for what it was: yes, it has tons of the usual for NIN, and the whole idea was that it was "the comeback single" that let us all know that NIN is still here and still sounds like NIN. I know a lot of casual fans or people who never listen to NIN who ended up getting HM because of it, it fits well on HM as far as I'm concerned (I mean if we're going to complain that it's a re-tread thematically, well then all of HM kinda is). The video is a whole other story that I won't get into, but as far as the song itself is concerned I think it's perfectly fine as a catchy, louder NIN song that doesn't try to be anything it's not. It's not my favorite HM track by any means, but it's certainly far from my least favorite. Within context of the album I think to try and say that it isn't genuine is to try and say none of HM is genuine; the whole thing deals with similar themes and subjects.

Oh, and Trent repeats phrases at the ends of songs all the goddamn time, even Copy of a ends after a ton of repeating the chorus.

I .... really, really like CBH
unapologetically
it's got a nice condensation of everything I like about NIN

THTF, on the other hand... the recording does nothing for me and the live version even less. it's all surface level and it's a fine pop song, but I like weird noises, of which there are precious few in THTF

Haha^^^ to each his own, I guess.

Perhaps genuine is the wrong term. CBH just feels like it was written to be a single while every other song on HM seems inspired.

I agree with the other people here who think Satellite would have been a better single.

I figure they stayed away from saying much about the Tension DVD because of ACL and not wanting to take attention away from that. Now that it's been said and done I'm guessing we'll get something about the Tension disc within the next month (especially now that they're on a small break from touring again).

Yay! So glad you got them. It does look pretty.

I still owe another ETSer a package with cases but I've misplaced them somewhere. I hope they turn up soon!

I totally feel you on this. I almost didn't want to upgrade my phone because of my case collection. I contracted for Casemate for a few years and acquired a ton of cases while there. I had so many nin ones. I was heart broken I couldn't use them anymore on my 5.

I still use my iPhone 4 with NIN Casemate cases. Even if I upgrade to a new phone, I will still keep the iPhone 4 to use as an MP3 player.

I have some iPhone 4 NIN Casemate cases that haven't been used. If anyone is interested in purchasing one for a decent price, please send me a PM.

I was thinking the other day, With Teeth through the LITS-era of NIN is probably my favorite. The fan interaction during this time was amazing, it's personally my favorite chunk of NIN music, the ARG, there was a whole lot going on. Remember when Trent would give out tickets to upcoming shows and for some reason Diddy always won? Strobelight? NIN/JA? There was some awesome shit back then!

For shits and giggles, Trent should release Strobelight. I'm still rooting for Still Hurts.

Pussygrinder has been written, albeit by another band called GoFight. Note: This is a remix. The album version is better, but I can't find it online right now.
