Let’s get it out the way now: yes, that’s the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ new album cover, and yes, it’s horrible.
Now, the details: the New York band will release their new album, Mosquito, on April 15. The band’s fourth album in total, it was produced by long-term collaborator Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio, Telepathe) and Nick Launay – with the exception of one track, which was produced by James Murphy and features Kool Keith under his Dr. Octagon guise [via NME (http://www.nme.com/news/yeah-yeah-yeahs/68164?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=YYYs&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=marr)].

Hell yes indeed!
This quote has got me interested.....

Speaking exclusively to NME about the album in this week's magazine, singer Karen O said "Well…it’s definitely different from the last album. So I guess you could say that hasn’t changed about us! It’s all over the place. The sound of the record is, I guess, a bit more lo-fi sounding and slightly more influenced by roots reggae. There's a lot of delay on stuff and there’s a more raw sound to it than there was last time."

That cover is amazingly bad. But in a good way. It's a fuckin' modern Garbage Pail Kid card or something.

The music in the teaser sounds like some of their earlier work, especially the Fever To Tell sessions. It's probably the vocal effects more than anything else.
Not sure how I feel about that... FTT hasn't aged well to my ear, I've grown to prefer the more poppy orientation they adopted with It's Blitz.

And yeah, that cover art is hilariously vile. Massively looking forward to the album though, and glad we don't have long to wait.

I seriously just thought about the band when I heard Zero on Sirius last week and if they were ever gonna do a new album...so glad to hear this news! Excited!

The pre order link does not work for me.......

EDIT nevermind. I was very close on hitting order for the deluxe signed lithograph but I'm scared I will get the cover art signed, and that shit is UGLY. I would never put that on my wall. I also don't know the drawl for someone to get something signed without meeting the person.

BUT yes I am excited for this release = )

Also check out what else the artist who did the cover art has done.

That's what I was thinking! Look at the font they used for their name...totally Garbage Pail Kid influence. I love it.

This album sounds nothing like the way they initially described it as sounding (lo-fi and Fever To Tell-ish) but it still sounds really good. Very chill and electronic. I dig it.

I was wondering what you cats thought of the new tunes.. I've only listened all the way through once, so I can't say other than it's sounds as I expected it to. Nothing to radically different, but that's not a bad thing really. I was shocked to see not only that Kool keith was on a track, but as DOCTOR OCTAGON. Crazy shit right there. I thought Doc Oct was dead? (Dr Dooom killed him)

just done on my first listen, I'm hoping this is gonna grow on me a bit. I like it, but it's nowhere near as immediate as I was expecting.
Wedding Song is beautiful

Rudi

I do like it but I think it drags at the end with 3 slower tempo songs one after another. It's hard to keep listening after Buried Alive, which is strange for me because I usually like the more mellow YYY tracks.

Space Suicide
04-15-2013, 12:54 AM
I also noticed this album has a lot of slower paced songs than any of their previous albums.

Still, I am enjoying it so far.

On my second play through amd so far it's not grabbing me. In fact I downright dislike some of these songs.

The last two are my fave.

Yeah, it's a pretty bad record. I haven't been wanting to revisit it very much, The Pitchfork review kind of nailed it on the head I think...

"The upbeat songs on Fever careened with a wobbly, inebriated energy, but whenever Mosquito aims for "zany" or "light," it teeters around like an exhibitionist "drunk" on non-alcoholic beer." (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/17868-yeah-yeah-yeahs-mosquito/)

thevoid99
04-15-2013, 02:40 PM
I downloaded the deluxe version of the album and I still think it's a great album. I don't agree with Pitchfork's review as I think it's a band just continuing to evolve with more weird ideas as well as refine their approach to making songs that can be poppy but also with a sense of edge. Though I prefer It's Blitz! and Fever to Tell, this is still a damn good album.

richardp
04-15-2013, 03:58 PM
Personally, I think Pitchfork's 6.0 is being generous. While there are far worse albums out there to listen to, this is absolutely YYYs worst album. I liked it on the first listen, and then every single time after that I've just been forcing myself to care about anything other than the, like, three good songs on it.

I suppose I'm in the minority; I'm finding this album to be pretty great. Not as immediately attention-grabbing as Fever to Tell or It's Blitz, that's for sure. Moodier and more mature, but with enough of that Cramps-y vibe I love them for. The attitude surrounding this album reminds me of the reception Show Your Bones got from a lot of people when it was first released. Back then, fresh off the buzz everyone was feeling from their debut, it kind of landed with a thud. Now, it seems a lot of fans cite that as their favourite.

I am really enjoying this new album, a lot more than It's Blitz too. Only been skipping "Always" and "Despair"

I'd rank their material as such

Show Your Bones
Fever to Tell
Mosquito
Is Is EP
Yeah Yeah Yeahs EP
It's Blitz
Machine EP

thevoid99

For me:

1. Fever to Tell
2. S/T EP/Machine EP
3. It's Blitz!
4. Is Is EP
5. Mosquito
6. Show Your Bones

I finally found the time to listen to it today after getting the cd in March.

It's really good, didn't expect it to be this good.

Had the privilege of seeing their set at Primavera Sound last weekend. Apart from "Spitting Off the Edge of the World", they played two other new songs ("Burning" and "Wolf", according to setlist.fm), and DAMN they were good!! Definitely better than SOTEOTW in my opinion. "Burning" in particular sounded really badass. Still very electronic, and lots of somewhat cheesy string stabs, but I'm actually really looking forward to the new album now.
