this band's name confuses me - what ashes are supposed to divide?

I recall Billy saying the meaning was personal and he doesn't want to divulge it.

Any word on whether Danny is going to release the rest of the tracks he remixed for the album (i.e. all of them)? In my opinion the remix of Denial Waits trumps the original, just like his remix of The Outsider.

I thought the first album was horrible. Besides Stripped Away, The Stone, and Sword (best song on the album imo), it didn't really do much for me. I guess my expectations were set a little too high.

I wasn't there but what I heard sounded great. Billy said before they played it that he might not remember the words. He did fumble(or he might have changed the lyric, what I heard wasn't great quality) the first verse but his vocals sounded amazing.

Yes Adam did come out for The Stone which actually made me unexpectedly emotional, it was good to see all those guys back up there. AnaLia and Ana Lenchantin played during Sword and Paz played solo for about 15 minutes before their set. They went on a little late and played about 50 minutes total.

Setlist

Sword
Denial Waits
Too Late
Ritual
Enemies
Stripped Away
Forever Can Be
The Chain
The Stone

I feel like they missed another perfect opportunity to have Carina sing on Ritual. If that ever happens I will die.

Was it the regular version of Denial Waits? I know Lohner said on twitter that he wanted them to play his remix.

I hope —

a) He finally reveals why he stylised it as “ASHES dIVIDE” (remember years back he said it was something deeply personal?), and:

b) That the album title doesn’t play with my OCD like the debut did with “Alright” instead of “All Right”.

Great show tonight. The new songs are pretty electronic at times. I can’t say for sure how much because the mix from the venue wasn’t great. At certain points I can barely hear Danny’s guitar.

The upcoming single was the heaviest track from the set. New single next Friday and more to come. Billy says the album will be out in the “Spring”.

Random tidbits:
Seeing Danny Lohner and Josh Freese together was a highlight. Reminds me of the Leno performance of 3 Libras.

Yeah, seeing Billy, Danny, and Josh onstage together would be pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to checking out Billy's new material. I was hoping he'd keep the Ashes Divide moniker, though I always thought the "ASHES dIVIDE" stylization was kind of cheesy, like when rappers intentionally misspell words in their song titles or 1337 speak. Someone on here said that he had some kind of personally meaningful reason for the all-caps, except for the 'd,' but since we don't know what it is, that meaning is lost on us.

I propose "Ashes Divide / Billy Howerdel" because there's plenty of room to list both, so why wouldn't you? They're pretty much the same thing (a solo project with some help from his friends in APC) and we might as well list them in chronological order.

Okay finally home and settled so a few things about the show

They had these shirts on sale for $25 https://i.postimg.cc/k4t7hHNr/IMG-1056.jpg (RJK - yours is going out in the mail today!)
As mentioned, the set was 5 songs long and he said on Twitter he was playing "half the album" which means it should be around 10 tracks total
Billy's manager Dino mentioned before the show that after the release of the first single Poison Flowers on March 4, there will be more single releases before the full record comes in the "Spring" - to my knowledge no firm dates have been given for the full record release.
Danny Lohner helped produce the album
Billy did not play his trademark cinnaburst Les Paul at the show and stuck with his black Les Paul the entire set

There are a few tracks posted to IG
New song (https://www.instagram.com/reel/CaY4b9SMeXw/) - This was the first track of the night
Trafficking (https://www.instagram.com/tv/CaWa269jYJn/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link)

ALSO, this is a long shot but there was a man standing next to us who was talking to my husband that had apparently traveled for the show and he attempted to ask me a question and I was so anxious and stressed that I was incredibly rude and if that happened to be anyone here I want to sincerely apologize. I was really overcome with the emotion of the evening and I just couldn't bring myself to chat right before the show started. I didn't realize that you were a Billy fan that had also traveled in and you were also excited about the show until my husband told me afterward. I assumed you were an Our Lady Peace fan that was just making conversation and I couldn't be bothered in that moment so I'm sorry for being such an asshole.

His vocals sound really fantastic in that IG Trafficking clip above. Huge improvement since that old Orestes demo.

He reminds me of two vocalists meshed together. A little bit like Dave Gahan, a little bit like someone else. In any case this all sounds promising.

The mood and energy in this is really great. So is the depth to the mix. Billy’s vocals have definitely matured in a lot of ways.

I’ll admit it didn’t hook me until a second listen. I’m not sure if it’s subtle, the coffee hadn’t hit yet, or I was more focused on peeling apart some of the sounds. I’ve always loved Billy’s bass parts.

It's definitely not a first timer. There are no catchy melodies, and the scansion of the lyrics is a bit odd. My first impression was that it didn't hook me right away but also that I'm excited to listen to it 100 more times over the next few days. That's how I feel about most music I end up loving forever, so that's a good sign. :)

@Jon (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=457), any major points worth mentioning? What does he say about the future of APC?

edit: just listened to it.

- He originally had a different album title in mind, which he may use again in the future, but didn’t say what it was. His manager eventually suggested he use his name instead, and he thought it’d be a good idea after thinking about it.

- No solid APC plans but “talks of plans” have started with Maynard once he’s done with Puscifer.

- Some demo track titles of APC songs that Billy gave them (usually quite generic) Maynard has kept as the song titles. Didn’t say which ones. Probably DLB, lol.

It’s up now for me. Giving it a spin!

He also mentioned that every song is placed where it is on the record and has its purpose, so should definitely be listened to “as an album”. Also said he wasn’t nervous about doing his own vocals this time around, though he definitely was in 2008. Maynard encouraged him to “use his speaking voice,” but Billy read between the lines with what he was saying.

So no Josh Freese. Understandable, between Offspring and Sting, it's hard to squeeze even more bands. Is Danny Lohner still there?
Billy has confirmed that Danny is in the touring band :D

New track hit streaming services! “Beautiful Mistake.” Billy posted that he’ll be releasing a track a week until the album comes out.

And damn, this song rules.

So far, I love the sense of freedom of form I’m getting from these songs. So many people described Ashes Divide stuff in an “A Perfect Circle lite” way. This album is not that.

Couldn't agree more. If anything, Ashes Divide gave off that Perfect Circle lite feeling. Hearing the new tracks, it makes sense as to why he dropped the name and used his instead... It sounds like everything he wanted to make back then and the song has more room to breathe making the track feel like 3 minutes instead of 5.

Everything sounds deliberbrant, well thought, and throws in little tid bits that doesn't make the song drag out. I do wish some artists didn't release the entire album or half the album before it even releases, but that seems to be the trend now.

SAME. Sadly, I don’t think it was his call because I’ve seen him comment several times that he would prefer people listen to the record in its entirety.

It’s definitely a product of the singles based music industry these days but IMO having 5+ songs from a record before it comes out really takes some of the excitement out of the first listen.

Yeaa this unfortunately happens with a lot of artists. I was a victim of listening to singles (I wouldn't even consider them singles these days) when they were released and once the album came out for said artist, it would deflate the experience. I've been holding off from now on, I'll listen to one or maybe two tracks and wait for the final release.

Maybe I’m an outlier but I love listening to albums all the way through and this fits how I learn albums. I always feel like I find one or two “touchstone” songs that other songs kind of lead to then those songs get filled in as I listen.

This is way better than just having the whole thing leak willy nilly and will drive interest.

Oh I understand why artists do it now and especially in his case because he’s starting a tour for an album that nobody has heard yet so the more of it they can get out to people the better. I just have a tendency to overplay songs that come out before an album release and then anytime I listen to the record in its entirety I have the urge (and often do) skip those songs. I wish I had the willpower to just not listen to things but I do not so I have just learned to try to limit my listens so I don’t get burned out.

Sort of related but I’ve also seen him mention in a few places he will be playing Ashes songs “adapted for 2022” which makes sense since he’s headlining shows on a 10 song record (which would make for an awfully short set) so I’m reallllly excited to see what tracks he chooses and what he does with them.

So much energy and it’s extremely rock solid. It’s incredibly rich sonically and feels deceptively complex.

I stayed away from all the singles except the first one and I'd say that this is definitely not what I expected. I've enjoyed it on the first two listens and I'm sure this will become one of my favorite records.

The first single seems completely unrepresentative of the whole album. Seems like a curious choice to release first.

Billy’s voice is so calm and commanding on the album and the music has a brooding, dark quality that I hadn’t expected.

Loving it after one listen. A thought I was having as the later singles released was that a lot of these songs kind of sound the same, but I think that's mainly just me getting used to this new sound, such a contrast from most of APC/AD. This is going to be such a nice chill-evening-having-dinner-and-a-drink-with-my-partner album.

Also, my headcanon is that Free And Weightless is a sequel to Weak And Powerless, since it's track 2, has a similar name, and would thematically make sense as a follow-up. That is all.

He addressed that in an interview recently and swears it's just a coincidence but said he has been accidentally mixing the two up in conversation :D

Pretty cool that La Ment… later just written as Lament (which one is it, Robert?!) is a favourite of Billy’s. My all-time favourite Cure song is the extended 12” version of Just One Kiss, also on Japanese Whispers.

If any of you are on the fence about going to one of these headlining shows because you don't have the cash for tickets, send me a DM and I will do what I can to help get you in for free.

These shows are being criminally under attended and I know it's partially because in some markets the tickets are running $50 including fees and times are tough for a lot of people right now. These shows are great though and deserve to be seen.

Oh and Danny Lohner has been coming out afterwards on some nights bullshitting with people so if you're looking for your chance to meet him, this could be it.

Dates listed below

06/24 – Minneapolis, MN @ Fine Line Music Café
06/25 – Milwaukee, WI @ Summerfest
06/26 – St. Louis, MO @ Delmar Hall
06/28 – Chicago, IL @ Cabaret Metro

Been listening to this and gone back and forgot how much I enjoyed Keep Telling Myself…

Especially Too Late, Forever Can Be, A Wish, Ritual, Sword and the Lohner mix of Denial Waits (much superior to the album version IMO).

Ritual is one of the best songs Billy has ever written.

Quick update for anyone going to the Toronto show — and if you are, maybe I'll see you there! — it has moved to Adelaide Hall, a slightly smaller venue (capacity of 450, as opposed to just over 600 for Axis, where it was previously scheduled), in the Entertainment District. It's closer for me to walk from Union Station, too. Maybe some of the fine folx who I saw at the awesome Failure concert last night will be there...

UPDATE: Gig is cancelled due to 'unprecedented circumstances'. The border crossing situation is a complete clusterfuck right now, unfortunately, I suspect they just weren't able to guarantee they'd be able to get up here in time.

saw the live show last night...their normal drummer couldn't make it so Josh Freese played with them, that was an unexpected surprise! thought the material translated really well live, and his voice is great. short set but obviously they don't have much to work with, played the entire album. excellent show.

Jaimie

Yeah, last nights set was exceptionally short because normally Greyson the drummer does a drum solo at the end of Poison Flowers which Josh obviously did not do. Josh will also be playing the show in Arizona on Wednesday.

I also think this is likely, but this screenshot indicates that they're actually recording it for a release of some kind, not just for performing it at the Sessanta shows. Still, I think it's very likely we'll see a new song debut at the upcoming shows.
