I'm trying to get my hands on a couple things. Can someone lead me in the direction of a recording from the Berkeley/Greek Show from this last summer?
Also does someone have a high-quality recording of By and Down?
Any word on an official release?

Yes, it was terrible, maybe it was just a bad show. They seemed out of practice, uninterested, and the sound was awful. By contrast the Puscifer show I saw last week was great.

No it was not just your show. The whole tour was a kick in the nuts to APC fans. Played bad. Sounded bad. No energy. They simply do not care. The last show in St. Paul destroyed opinion that I had of these guys. Saw them 3 times before this tour and it was always great. I agree about Puscifer... Saw them 2 weeks ago and it was soooo much better. At least they keep it entertaining.

Strange, the show I saw in Phoenix was anything but bad. Maybe it was the fact that I'd been wanting to see APC for years or maybe it was all the vodka ($7 a shot?!?), but I loved it. I got to meet the band (sans Bastard James Keenan) so it was a pretty rad experience for me. Even if eMOVITe is my least favorite album, they made it sound great.

Sound was great at the Gibson Amphitheatre, and they played well. Don't know about the energy really. I had nosebleed seats and was mostly paying attention to the music. I also think they did a great job with rearranging the songs.

Before the old board went kaput, I mentioned that I had gotten into A Perfect Circle recently and had loved Mer de Noms but had been lukewarm on Thirteenth Step. I can see how you guys can like it better. There are a lot of songs on Emotive that I like over some songs on 13th Step. I have noticed the more and more I have listened to 13th Step, the more I found myself skipping tracks and rolling my eyes because to me the songs just get old and forgettable (not all of them). Emotive is very diverse from the rest APC's catalogue, and some tracks really shine because of that. Honestly, I cannot even say what my favorite album would be.

I recorded two bootlegs over the summer and never released them. I like both the versions of By and Down that I got.

I'm surprised everyone was so bummed out about this tour in general... I mean, sure, I'd love more MDN and TS, but the eMOTIVe shit was a whole lot better live than on the record. I also thought the band was in high spirits, had a lot of energy... and MJ was much more active and than he's been the last 4 times I saw him with his other band.

At that time they were short of material anyway. Aside from what they played while supporting NIN, their headline shows would include some of the following: heavy full-band version of Over, full-band version of Renholder (not just prerecorded), Ashes to Ashes, 3 Libras Remix and Ozzy's Cure (aka Diary of a Lovesong). Can't think of anything else they could play on the first tour.

The band rerecorded it (in one take) with Josh Freese who doesn't play on the studio track. Maynard didn't redo his vocals, but they're remixed. There's an extra chorus and they took the harmony out of the first chorus.

it isn't a rerecording, just the radio version that contains an extra chorus and a different drum fill intro. the production is a bit different too, but it's still all the same source recordings used on the album. the official title is "Mix 2001" and it was edited/re-produced by Alan Moulder.

I thought the 2001 radio mix of The Hollow was just mixed with more distinct drum features, also perhaps having a re-recording of those only. Josh Freese and not Tim Alexander unlike the Mer de Noms version?

After reading back, it looks like everyone is in agreeance with me or vice versa.

It's alright, I feel the same way. It's really strange of them to do that. Last I heard, Maynard had laid down vocals on at least one track, so either they're taking a fucking long time to figure out how they want to release music now, or they scrapped it. It's kinda annoying that it's just been nothing but radio silence. The slightest update would be nice, even if it's just a "We're just trying to figure out what we want to do, but it's not dead."

That's kind of how I feel about most of the threads in the Muscial Revolution section of this forum.
For some reason, with the old ETS, people seemed to ONLY post in a thread when there was some sort of news. Now it's a "everything goes, hodge podge discussion about your faviorute band" it seems.

I've learned to accept this though, this is how the new ETS is gonna be. But boy-of-fucking-boy do I ever feel your pain on this issue, especially with that TOOL thread! =)

i guess i'm of the (rare?) faction that prefers general discussion about a band and all of their merits over a constant news stream. not for nothing, but it's not like we're pitchfork or NME. there are plenty of other sites for that up-to-the-minute news stream.

i will agree that there's a lot of unnecessary squibbling in the "big bands" (tool, manson, etc.) threads, though. but i, for one, welcome quality discussion about a band, both past and present.

Well, for me it is easy enough to go to a bands page I may be following and check out their Facebook, Official Site (that rarely exists anymore), Twitter, GOOGLE, etc to see what is up. I really like that you can go into a thread now and start talking about say a video, an old demo someone may be looking for, a live video/performance, or even just to talk about an album and no one flies off the handle and starts yelling at people because they clicked on the thread just to not receive any new news. I actually like to see other peoples opinions in here and have some constructive debates here and there. I've learned a butt load of stuff on here from fellow board members about bands that I love; being subjected to just posting in a thread, or bumping a thread for news about a band that everyone on the board likes I always found a bit silly. Either someone will respond and add to the convo, or no one will respond.

I guess what I am trying to say is Google is one hell of a resource ;)

But yea, a studio version of By and Down would be fucking nice... a thank youuu.

Touche fillow.

This probably isn't gonna go over well and I know this is the internet and all but christ some of you like to complain about every little thing. So you clicked into a thread about a band you like and there was NO news to report?!? Wow, bummer. It didn't cost you any money and it took maybe 30 seconds of your time, is it really that big of a deal?

If threads were ONLY created on the occasion that a band did "something new" this thread technically shouldn't even exist here. I get that some of you are bitter about the tour (not that I agree) but realistically whether the tour kicked ass or not is pretty much irrelevant as far as what they are up to now. Even if it blew your mind they likely still wouldn't be doing anything at the moment and you complaining about how "bad the tour sucked" is only boosting the thread which is essentially what you're complaining about in the first place right?

I have seen this complaint several times now so perhaps I see message boards differently than most but to me they're a place to discuss various topics with others who have similar interests. The rapid report of new activity you typically get is a perk, not necessarily their sole purpose.

october_midnight

You are a broken record with this two bands thing. Just because someone doesn't post in 1,800 threads doesn't mean they only like the bands whos threads they post in.

I truly don't feel the need to prove myself to you but just be aware that the fact that I only post about a few artists here is in no way indicative of a lack of interest in others.

Goldfoot
05-10-2012, 04:36 PM
This argument is pointless. A forum is a place where people exchange ideas on a topic. These ideas don't have to be new, and they don't have to be news. If you are browsing this place, only going into recently updated threads, only expecting there to be news, then you are doing it wrong. If I feel the urge to come discuss how amazing I think Paz's version of The Hollow is, I should be able to do so without people asking me to shut up because that has nothing to do with the band's current situation. Having people refrain from discussion on a topic, unless there is something new to report, is a great way to stifle conversation and ruin the great dynamic that a message board has.

Actually I didn't even notice who that person was (didn't notice who until looking just now) since the username is different.

A. Wasn't talking about anyone in particular, otherwise I would've named someone.
B. Thought it was clear with the 'devil's advocate' thing...

Way to keep up the ETS tradition of everyone taking the internets so srsly.

No and I get it. I personally wasn't dissapointed by the tour but that's not to say I don't understand why some of you were.

I guess I just hate to see people being discouraged from posting things they find, asking questions or looking for specific items they may not have because when they do they get scolded for posting about something that isn't related to new activity from the band.

I just realized it's been a year since I saw APC in Pittsburgh - And a year since "By and Down" was introduced, and hinted as a small release.

Maybe I just find it weird for bands to tour and play shows without releasing anything. Agreed that they're all busy, so it's understandable. But you'd think that with the time to rehearse, travel and perform, they could be working on new material. That bugs me.

Well that tweet I mentioned was less than 24 hours ago, so I'd say it's still viable.

You're right though, it is taking a while. That image of his credits was put on Facebook like a month ago. And it had to have been made before even that, because the Born Villain thing like you said.

Lincoln, Nebraska. 12/12/0X (don't remember the specific year). I've posted the link to it before, but it may have been pre-New ETS. Last show before Christmas. Maynard was dressed as Santa, replacing lyrics with Christmas lines (The Pet is fucking hilarious; no spoilers from me). Lots of jokes between songs. If I had it on me, I'd just re-upload it. Won't be home until sometime next year though, so no luck on my end.

From http://aperfectcircle.frontgatetickets.com:

APC Sound Check Pass

For the first time EVER, you have the opportunity to be present at this intimate setting while APC rehearses! Fans will receive early access to the venue - which means first shot at a prime General Admission location (if applicable) or, if a reserved seat, the opportunity to get settled in your premium seating location. You'll see the venue preparations for the night's show. You'll see the room fill in anticipation of the show. And most importantly, you will be receiving extremely exclusive and intimate access to the band's sound check. At the sound check you can expect to see the band run through a few tunes in preparation for the night's show. This package is available to fans of any age!

The wine magazines are talking about it. The movie BLOOD INTO WINE tells you about it. Now you can come learn about it first hand, while trying it yourself! Basic concepts of Maynard's wine and processes used by Caduceus and AZ Stronghold will be presented. A Caduceus Vineyards representative will discuss the wine, take questions and you'll be able to personally critique the wine. Class sizes are restricted due to short supply. Please note, this event occurs a few hours before the show. (Tastings will be based on each city's schedule, but typically start at approx. 4 pm.)

Following the wine tasting, patrons also receive access to APC's sound check!
ALL WINE TASTING PATRONS MUST BE OVER 21 AND HAVE A STATE OR FEDERAL ISSUED ID PRIOR TO ENTERING THE WINE TASTING.

All Wine Tasting/Sound Check pass holders will receive:

If a fan buys a ticket, they're not getting pissed on - unless they've made the adult decision that they're getting pissed on and do it anyway.

If a fan doesn't buy a ticket, no harm done.

If enough fans don't buy tickets, no more shows.

Can someone please explain to me what the problem is?

With Puscifer, there was a connection with Caduceus, albeit a primarily financially-driven one: the Blood into Wine soundtrack was mostly Puscifer songs. I don't begrudge Maynard for mixing those two things together. Both the Puscifer and Caduceus fanbases are largely constituted by Maynard/Tool obsessives. I know those kind of people because I am one of them...but I won't buy the wine. Or a soundtrack full of songs I already own.

What the hell does Maynard's wine have to do with APC? It's a horrible dilution and cheapening of the APC brand. It's like he's only taking APC on the road if he can set up a little booth at the side to sell his wine...it's classless, and he'd never get away with it in Tool, the other guys'd tell him to go fuck himself.

And asking people to pay for a fucking soundcheck is horrible. I've had to stand through hundreds of soundchecks in my life, comes with working in the music industry. I will never get that time back. The idea of paying to see a soundcheck strikes me as an all-time music industry low. It's preying on some fans' eagerness to have exclusive insight, or a closer relationship with the band. It's taking advantage of the very kind of personality cult Maynard spent the first 15 years of his career ranting against. I accept he's changed his tune on that front with Puscifer and Caduceus, and now markets himself as a personality. But does APC need to be turned into the Maynard Inc. show too?

I'm fairly sure that these shows are essentially financing everything Billy and Maynard are doing, respectively. I'm not sure that Ashes Divide gets label funding, but the last Puscifer album was fully funded by Maynard. A Perfect Circle has no label behind them to finance any release--should they choose to have one.

I'm thinking Tool was doing something similar, funds-wise, from their brief touring earlier this year.

He did have a valid reason and he gave an explanation on his website about the issue, even saying that he will still be the drummer for APC. It was a bit odd decision to go on a tour at that time, they didn't seem to give Freese much choice there.

It's a real bummer though, I really hoped Freese would stay around and they'd do another release of some sort. I wonder what led to this decision?

the drum mix on that album is stunning, though the guitars are a bit dullish compared to Thirteenth Step. you get to the end of "Breņa" and it's like the cymbals wash across the mix like water. truly beautiful engineering work there, besides Freese playing well as always.

Sadly I agree with this. They are so half-heartedly resurrecting a horse dead almost a decade, with nothing to show for it. For me APC was a special thing, of a specific time and place: it made real sense in Maynard's artistic trajectory at the time for him to go off and explore this other side. APC had this real power: he'd been unable to express all these things in Tool, and here they were with astonishing force and clarity and vision. Now he's very busy with Puscifer and the wine thing, and preparing to come back with Tool: I just don't see how APC fits in with all that. For them to do a little bit of APC on the weekends seems such a devaluation, and a revisitation of the past. And no, I don't care how much I get to sound like the interlocutor in Hooker With A Penis.

The most recent APC tours were really great for someone like me who was younger when the band was in its prime during their first two album runs. I can easily see how long time fans are disappointed, I mean seriously we never even got the By and Down single, is it that hard to put out something like a set of 4 new songs, something for the fans that have waited a decade.

Billy and Maynard always were APC.

I don't get how people are still scandalized by member changes. Paz and Troy weren't even in the band enough yet to play on all/most of the MDN songs. Even Josh wasn't the only drummer on that album. TS was a new band with a dash of the old. eMotive was a total clusterfuck of a lineup, and the touring band has changed numerous times.

It's not so much 'member changes' as 'Josh leaving'. Josh wasn't just some session drummer for APC, he was their drummer. Behind the frontmen (Billy and Maynard), Josh was absolutely the most important member.

Absolutely! Josh is known for being a phenomenal session drummer, I remember Josh saying that he has done drum tracks for Avril Lavigne and he didn't even know which tracks they would end upon. With APC, I'm sure he was behind the creative process for many songs, it wasn't just another session for him, APC is one of the few bands he has been with from the very beginning.

re: clusterfuck of a lineup on eMotive
I recall that eMotive lineup is also pretty solid. Most of the songs were done by MJK+Billy+Josh+Renholder. Plus a few guest appearances (Paz, Charlie) here and there. The only song that doesn't fit is People are People, which features James Iha and Twiggy instead of Lohner. My guess is the song was recorded when 13Step tour was still ongoing or right after that.

To me the main problem with eMOTIVe is Billy's vile singing. If you have MJK in your band - you don't take over on vocals. You let the best rock singer of his generation* do his job.
I think BH redeemed himself a little with Ashes Divide: his vocals are OK on that record. But up against MJK here they sound terrible.
Also, that they were passing this off as an album up there with the other two: I'd rather they presented it as an extended EP.
I actually really like that Imagine cover - and Let's Have A War is good too, nice and spooky. But People are People and Freedom of Choice are sonic sewage, and too much of the album is unpleasant and flat.

*Mike Patton would be the other contender for this title.

But he wasn't there at the very beginning. Tim Alexander was.

But they hardly did it as a regular four-piece. I apparently can't find my emotive liner notes which listed the contributions for each song, but the wikipedia list has two people doing drums, three doing bass, six doing keys or piano of some kind, three on guitar, three on vocals, four doing programming, one sax, and one on strings. And this on an album where the opener was just maynard/billy, the closer was just maynard, and one in the middle was a remix.

Well sure, Tim was there in the very beginning but was soon replaced with Josh, I doubt many know Tim's involvement with the band. As far as I know, "The Hollow" is the only song that features Tim on the drums. I'd still consider this one of Josh's main bands.

The only songs that Josh wrote in APC were Crimes and Gravity.
Even though it says so in the song credits, it's not like they gave him a complete music sheet with every ghost note and fill exactly pointed out to him. A time signature, tempo and a rough idea is mostly what is given. It's still Josh's style there. Use any other drummer and it would sound different.

I've read liner notes here:

I guess they are taken from the booklet, but so far I failed to find inside scans bigger that these: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=538601

If this is correct, than we have the following:
1. Annihilation: arrangement by BH+MJK; guitar by BH; keys and programming by BH+DL
2. Imagine: arr. by MJK; guitar and bass by BH; drums by JF; piano by MJK and Paz, strings by Paz
3. Peace & Love: arr. by BH, guitar by BH; strings by Paz; drums by JF; programming by BH+CC
4. What's Going On: arr. by DL; guitar and bass by BH; drums by JF; programming by CC
5. Passive: guitars by DL+BH; bass by DL; drums by JF; piano by Paz
6. Gimme: arr. by MJK; guitar and harmonium by BH; bass by DL; drums by JF
7. People are People: arr. by BH; guitar bu Iha; bass by Twiggy; keyboards and programming by Iha+BH; drums by JF
8. Freedom of Choice: arr. by BH; guitar and bass by BH; drums by JF
9. Let's Have a War: arr. by MJK; guitar and bass by DL; drums by JF
10. Counting Bodies: arr. by DL; programming by DL ; programmed drums and piano by Estius; sax by Jason Freese
11. Levee Breakes: arr. by BH; guitar and bass by BH; piano by Paz; drums by JF
12. Feedle: arr. by MJK

BH = Billy Howerdel; MJK = Maynard James Keenan; DL = Danny Lohner; JF = Josh Freese; Paz = Paz Lenchnatin; Iha = James Iha; Twiggy = Jeordie White; Estius = Joshua Eustis

Probably should've done a table instead of simple text.

Also, I LOVE this album from the start to the very end (can't say the same about live versions of some songs though) and i love People are People much more than DM version.

Funky's on Hastings St.! Right next door to Save-On-Meats. Not a LOT of selection, song-wise, as compared to, say, the Legion on Main and 23rd, but better vibe. It's a dive, but a fun dive.

I wouldn't mind a DVD, but it's been long enough where they should give us at least something. You make a really good point though for the bonus idea included with the DVD. I can see them making it a digital bonus or something to that nature, or having it on the album and available for download as well.

I really couldn't disagree more. Especially on older Tool material, he's swapping out a lot of screaming for singing and added a lot of melodic touches here and there. I'll agree that some of the 2011 APC songs were rough, but those are from a period where Maynard's voice had a very different tone.

A PERFECT CIRCLE guitarist Billy Howerdel was interviewed by Las Vegas Weekly ahead of the band's sole 2012 show — on December 29 at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Asked if the band has "a well of songs" that they are waiting to release, Billy said: "Kind of. I mean, I haven't even sprung them on Maynard [Keenan, A PERFECT CIRCLE singer] yet. He may be like, 'Let's do something last minute,' but I kind of doubt it, since we have three days of rehearsal left. But I'm one to bite off more than I can chew."

On the topic of whether there are any plans for A PERFECT CIRCLE to release a follow-up album to 2004's "eMOTIVe", Howerdel said: "I'd love to — when the time is right. It would be awesome. I'm trying to write songs with that in mind, but … right now, I'm focusing most of my energy on a new ASHES DIVIDE record, which is under way with 11 songs. Still working on finishing vocals and writing lyrics, and hopefully get that thing mixed in January or February."

According to Howerdel, he never viewed A PERFECT CIRCLE as a side project, despite the fact that it was billed as such when it was first formed.

"I've never felt that it was a side project," the guitarist said. "That being said, I always knew in the background, Maynard's first band is TOOL, and that's where he's going back to. I didn't have expectations that he was going to be doing an album, tour, album, tour consistently. That would be wishful thinking, but I wouldn't wish that upon the TOOL guys. You get into that very complicated desire versus being sensitive to other people around you. At this point, Maynard's got his fingers in so many pies that it's a welcome thing to me when he says, 'Hey, I've got a hole in my schedule; let's do this.' It's fantastic. He's incredible to work with. He's always got something interesting to offer and unexpected. I'm very lucky to be teamed up with him whenever I can."

After a 13-year run with the band, drummer Josh Freese announced his departure from A PERFECT CIRCLE in October, "with no plans of returning," he wrote on his Twitter profile.

A PERFECT CIRCLE recently confirmed its participation in the 2013 edition of the Soundwave Festival, which kicks off February 23 in Brisbane, Australia.

A PERFECT CIRCLE toured North America for the first time in six years last year. These were the band's first live dates since a mini-tour they did in the fall of 2010, in which they played each of their three studio albums over the course of three nights in five cities.

The 2010-2011 lineup of A PERFECT CIRCLE included Keenan, Howerdel, Freese, former SMASHING PUMPKINS guitarist James Iha and bassist Matt McJunkins.

A PERFECT CIRCLE currently does not have a record deal.

I really didn't see many cameras , which is strange. A lot of the crowd really didn't like Neil Hamburger. The crowd was really into the show, and the band seemed to enjoy it.
