Remember when we used to split these things off every month? Here's the 2012 edition (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/threads/81-NIN-Spotting-2012). I suspect the 2013 thread will be much more active as the year progresses.

I think she's more than she's cracked up to be, especially after seeing her on the Reality TV ep of Screenwipe, and now knowing she's a NIN fan? It's like Matt Baker being scarily and subversively political

And isn't it weird that the HTDA camp has gone silent (again)?

Not really. Rob -- who I'm sure does all the social-media work -- was on a long honeymoon, and then there was Christmas and New Year's.

I know you disagreed in the other thread, but I'm starting to believe the Sound City Music Players could be the only version of NIN live this year (and that would probably just be a couple NIN songs and TR helping out with QOTSA, Foo Fighters, etc. songs). I hope I'm wrong about that. We should have a better idea on January 14 (possible coachella lineup date?) or January 18 (first SCMP show).

I somewhat agree that Trent could be a part of the Sound City show(s?), I just disagree that that's what he meant by "2013" on reddit.

I mean, HTDA is gonna go "big" some time early this year, right? It has to. Album release and tour. I think that'll keep him busy.

I've gone off-topic.

Saw a movie called "Murder by Proxy" on Netflix about the rise in spree shootings in the United States. Both 999,999 and Corona Radiata were used. 999,999 was used three times, one of which was during security camera footage of some guy shooting up his workplace. Kind of felt wrong to hear NIN being used behind footage of actual murders.

i don't quite understand why a band like that would cover wish and just play it EXACTLY like NIN. i mean, i don't like hippie stoner jam bands, so i wouldn't want to hear a version of wish done in that style, but i would think their own fans would rather hear that than hear them doing a mediocre job of imitating nine inch nails.

I watched it earlier this month and noticed the same thing. Couldn't really figure out why. Since it's about gaming journalists being biased, are they referring to Academy Award judges being biased as well? Trent is a newcomer to film scores and won. Surely it can't be that. It seems that it's totally unrelated and the person who put the picture together has no idea who's on the picture. ;)

Totally agree with you on that buddy. I have a feeling a lot of their fans wouldnt even know the song. But, I will admit, I think they did a pretty good job on the cover. The guitar sounds are a little off of course, but I don't think there's really any way you can cover NIN and completely nail the guitar sounds. its just dosent happen.

My issue with that cover is the fact that it comes across as "Nine Inch Nails karaoke" rather than a legitimate attempt to cover the song. Sure, the song might not have translated well with their style, but at least it would have sounded genuine.

One thing they're known for live is not just covering songs, but the depth of variety of who they choose to cover. Everything from Michael Jackson to King Crimson. They even did a cover of the mash-up of "Closer" and the Beatles' "Come Together".

Good to know. The description Fios gives is WAY off then.

"Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor discusses the origins of the band's Grammy Award-nominated song "Hurt", and explains his initial reluctance on having country musician Johnny Cash record a cover version of the classic track."

That sounds a lot more interesting, even though he's discussed it in a bunch of interviews. But now I'm not as bummed about missing it.

Self-professed jamband fan chiming in. To put in perspective, my two favorite bands are NIN and Phish. The only band I've seen more than NIN is Phish (NIN - 26ish times, Phish up at around 40).

I've actually seen Umphrey's ~15 times since 2003. They are amazing musicians, write some great songs, and put on a great show. As far as the whole jamband scene (or what's left of it) goes, they have some great singing ability and harmonize really well.

Although, as great as they are, I've kinda been burnt out (no pun intended) on them. Nowadays, I really only download indivudual tracks of theirs from their live shows, and all of those are covers. Generally, they do a FANTASTIC job with cover songs - Better than anyone in the scene IMHO. They're mashups are kind of hokey, but their straight covers are really, really good.

When I saw Wish pop up, I wasn't that excited. I knew it couldn't have been that great, and I was right. To be fair, it's hard to cover NIN really well. If I'm not mistaken, it sounds like they used the actually "wind"-type noise from the intro. Not sure how they sampled that.

If anyone is interested in some of their great covers (best ones that pops into mind are Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond and a Talking Heads song), let me know.

Trent not being in the currently announced shows doesn't mean he won't be in future ones. That sentence was horrendously constructed.

Coachella seems like a good bet for Trent's involvement.

Wait a second, is that Facebook page official? From the about box:

"Apparently, the ensemble will feature “core musicians and special guests” related to the film. As a refresher, Sound City involves (to name just a few): Trent Reznor, Josh Homme, Stevie Nicks, Rick Springfield, Rick Nielsen, Krist Novoselic, Tim Commerford & Brad Wilk of Rage Against the Machine, Alain Johannes, Robert Levon Been & Peter Hayes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, Paul McCartney, and many more."

That doesn't strike me as an official Facebook page.

Does he need to perpetually be in the public eye? The marketing machine for Welcome oblivion hasn't started (officially) yet, so he's most likely just enjoying the calm before the storm. He's enjoying it, Q's probably enjoying it, and Rob's never really silent anyway but there's nothing for him to openly talk about HTDA-wise right now. Give the dude his time to be invisible.

Yeah, I don't think HDTA opening for NIN is a great idea. I do think the best way to start out HDTA's touring career is by having them open for a completely different band though. It'd be a much better way of exposing them to a non-NIN crowd.

While I (and, I'm sure, many other people) would relish the opportunity to see this pairing, I don't think it's a good match. Queens have a very loyal base of well-intending but rather narrow-minded fans who prefer straight-rocking heavy jams and that's not at all what HTDA is doing.

Spotting on the 'deep web' if you will: the extended version of Uncoiled (for donors) is on what.cd; sadly it isn't burning up the Top Ten like the original edition did.

Q. What was the deal with Marilyn Manson's Alice involvement? I've heard a lot of things on the internet but internet things are unreliable.

A. He was involved, then he wasn't. They (Manson/NIN people) are a mercurial bunch. Never figured out what the real motivation for the sudden departure was. But we did get a couple of really beautiful tracks out of it - sadly, I'm legally forbidden from releasing them. So I listen to them by myself and smile.

I am relieved as well, because now I can cancel my vacation I had planned in April in case NIN returned at the festival, and use it for the Summer when I actually need it now, hah.

So this probably confirms there won't be any live NIN in 2013 at all. I couldn't see him returning this soon anyway. He will be back, but not til at least next year I would imagine.

I'm not counting out the possibility of 2013 until the lineups for Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza are announced. The Bonnaroo lineup is announced in February and I believe the headliners for Lollapalooza are usually leaked in February. I think the only thing the lack of NIN at Coachella proves is that HTDA and NIN will not be touring together.

Lol. Now what makes that a logical connection?

He was being "sarcastic" to try and proove how stupid we are for jumping to "silly" conclusions. *rolls eyes*

Yet I find it rather amusing that a few posts up he practically AGREES that NIN won't be touring in 2013 with a quote that says...

The list of things NIN aren't playing this year is rather long

And it wasn't Until @fillow (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=348) told us to stop "jumping to conclusions" AKA: Playing NIN Fortune teller, then he decided to jump on the "he's right, NIN will be back this year" thought all of a sudden. Very odd...

Well, some of us were making travel plans based on whether NIN was going to be at coachella or not, so it was a pretty fair "spotting" if you ask me.

You should try it one day, the next time NIN announces their first show in xx number of years, hop on a plane and enjoy the festivities, it's a wonderful feeling!

Oh.

Ok, here's my "complete" guess at what will happen:

Trent keeps himself busy with HTDA during the first half of 2013. Album and shows turn out to be sort of disappointing, only make people miss NIN even more.

Since people are desperately craving for some NIN, out comes The Fragile's deluxe edition rerelease around August (special edition will cost $200), and a US tour of the album played in its entirety (because eff you rest of the world or something?).

The same people who faceplamed this post will be the same ones to say "oh yeah, basically I knew about The Fragile tour with Belew back in January, totally predictable, not really news for me."

EDIT: I'd say more than halfway to confirmed, after this

If Trent can handle playing a bit more bass this time around like he did (sorta) during the Fragility tour, I don't see a reason why we can't have both Robin and Adrian. OoOoOo the sounds from that stage...

Would he need two guitarists if he toured just The Fragile? (Either in addition to himself, or because he'd be on keys so much...) Serious question (from a total nonmusician)... what would he need to put together?

onthewall2983

My guess would be something identical to the lineup he had in 2000. If he brings Adrian on, he'd probably need a rhythm guitarist as well so yeah two primary guitarists.

Yeah, totally. Lots of layered guitars and different guitar parts. It's been years since I've listened to it (waiting for the re-release) but yeah plus neither Robin or Adrian are typical guitarists they are more about soundscapes and feeling than just riffing. I'm very interested in who else will be involved. Chris Vrenna on synths and Percussion and Jerome Dillon on drums would be an awesome assault! Throw in Make Garson on piano...BLAH!!!! I can't keep thinking like this...brain will melt....

If NIN Tour, I hope it's a fragile anniversary tour. I really think Trent should bury NIN otherwise, what he's doing with HTDA is fine. Can't top LITS and it ended so well. Trent's just going to turn into Manson otherwise. Be an old washed up rockstar singing all these old school metal classics and looking like a tool. 50 year old Trent singing Wish with a 63 year old on lead guitar? No thanks.

Regarding NIN's possible/speculated tour for The Fragile, wouldn't it make more sense from a promotional point of view to release The Fragile's new edition in 2014 for its 15th anniversary?

I believe this year will be mainly dedicated to HTDA, and by the end of the year maybe they could start announcing some dates for NIN's return, with 2014 being the best year for a big tour promoting The Fragile's 15th Anniversary Edition, the Greatest Hits compilation, the new album and maybe even with the possiblity of a new edition for TDS's 20th Anniversary since the 5.1 remixes/remasters are already done and I doubt that Interscope would miss another opportunity to make more money out of such a classic album. And maybe they could even release a 10th anniversary edition of With Teeth for 2015 (with a booklet, finally XD).

Keep in mind that the family's timetable might be more important than any "anniversary" timing for a tour. I'm sure he would rather not leave his wife and children at home during a (likely) lengthy NIN tour. And as kids get older (their eldest kid will be 3 this fall), it becomes more important for them to be in preschool and around other kids in general for social interaction. So it might be better to haul the family around on a tour bus sooner rather than later.

Why do Fragility over again when you can do something fresh and new with a bunch of tracks that you've never played live before? If Trent is indeed touring The Fragile in its entirety, I wouldn't want to see the same people doing it. If you think about NIN's live setup and one of the reasons behind the constantly changing lineup (Trent's desire to have the material continually re-imagined) then doing Fragility 3.0 sounds (and is) fucking stupid.

I found a test edit I did of one of the Terminal 5 shows a couple years ago when I was going through hard drives and thought I'd upload it for people to enjoy (even though it's not great and is why the Terminal 5 show never got fully edited).

Video Description:
"Edited this (poorly - I know) with the few camera angles I was given to edit a Terminal 5 show a couple years ago. This was my test song and the song that had the most amount of coverage for an edit. At times, I probably had only one shitty angle available and at the most - I had 4 angles to choose from. In other words, the rest of the show wasn't really worth editing, given the lack of coverage that we had. I just found it in my hard drive and thought other people would enjoy it, regardless of it's quality. So... enjoy?"

This doesn't really saying much, there is no way to tell how many of his parts ended up on the album. He's nowhere in the linear notes (although I'm not sure about 'thanks' section).
And TR once said something like Grohl and Dillon played about half of the live drums on WT each, while in the end Dillon is only credited on two songs, and Grohl on 8 (including Non-Entity).

Technically Josh Freese played drums on The Slip, they were just programmed. I expect it's just the same thing. You can still get a sense of how the drummer sounds but possibly not how they play rhythmically (if that makes any sense)

the drums were definitely more "whole takes" on With Teeth; The Fragile used a lot of drum loops which were often cut from real drumming. The Slip sounds programmed to me, even if it was taken from samples of someone playing.

You know, as little as this is an actual NIN-spotting, it kind of makes me happy to see a reznor-AC picture posted. There used to be about one Reznor-AZ picture a month during NIN's more active years. Feels like we're getting there again..

Barely a NIN-spotting. But I was at my local record store's vinyl cave, and was in the "N" section (not looking for nine inch nails mind you) and found a near-pristine copy of The Fragile, still in shrink wrap. For like 0.5 seconds I got really excited before realizing that this was probably going to be too expensive for me to just buy, even if I found it hiding there. Sure enough, it was like $130 (which is a pretty good price, but more than I can afford nonetheless) or something like that.

TMZ's sensationalised it (probably for the first time ever). His actual comments are fairly mild, and there's no context around how or why this was discussed.

Personally though, if thousands of people who'd probably never heard the song are being pointed in its direction, I'd be happy about it. I don't know if he still gets paid for any of the work he did with NIN, but I'd think sales will be up as a consequence.

http://consequenceofsound.net/2013/03/watch-nine-inch-nails-self-destruct-tour-documentary/

Over the weekend, Reznor posted two videos, highlighted by a rarely seen documentary of Nine Inch Nail’s “Self Destruct” tour. As Spin (http://www.spin.com/articles/nine-inch-nails-self-destruct-tour-documentary-video-watch) notes, the 75-minute film was previously only available on the 1997′s Closure VHS, and includes cameos from David Bowie and Marilyn Mansion. It’s also NSFW.

The other video is in the form of an acoustic performance of “The Becoming”, which originally appeared on Still (http://www.nin.com/still/), the bonus companion to 2002′s live album, And All That Could Have Been.

There is a very short clip of the Closer video (a few seconds, no sound) at around 48:46 in Side by Side, which is Keanu Reeves' recent documentary on the impact of digital video on the motion picture industry.

The film's theme is quite in parallel with that of Sound City in that both are to some extent the story of rapidly improving digital technology supplanting older methods of making and distributing art that had been relatively stable for decades.

Just a couple of years ago he had this long rant at a show about how Trent wouldn't sign a fan's poster because he'd signed it first, and had the crowd chant "Fuck Trent Reznor", all because there were two guys in the audience with NIN shirts on. I was recording the stream, so when I get a chance I'll post it on youtube and maybe someone can translate it.. or maybe the youtube auto CC will work.

I try and be open minded but hell no! Nu-metal icons and Nine Inch Nails, it just seems so vile.
Have you even heard With Teeth?

I've only ever liked a few songs here and there with slipknot and that one bother song. The guy definitely does what he does well but I've never seen him to be of the same caliber of musician. Totally not trying to offend anyones person taste by any means. One just comes off as a "rockstar" and the other not so much.

I try not to remember nin from 05-07. :P

NIN is mentioned in the description for the Buchla doc kickstarter -- http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/589078128/buchla-documentary

The list of musicians and composers who have used the Buchla range from avant-garde composer Morton Subotnick to Nine Inch Nails, with plenty more along the way.

looks like Cortini will (not surprisingly) be involved:

Among the other people we will be including in the film are early Buchla composer/performer Suzanne Ciani, analog synth performer/music journalist Gino Robair, Lightning virtuoso Forrest Tobey, synth maestro Alessandro Cortini (of Nine Inch Nails and Sonoio), Marimba Lumina co-designer Mark Goldstein, and, of course,Don himself.

for synth-nerds, this will probably be a treat.

quoting for truth, since it went by un -noticed/-answered:

Hey yo, what happened to NIN Spotting JUST being NIN Spotting...?

don't want to rain on anyone's parade here, but is it official policy now to discuss spotting in this thread as well? i mean, i'm reading this topic for spottings and there's some speculation about alternate tracklists going on, only to be followed by a discussion about slipknot...?

The Still CD is on sale at the NIN bandmerch site if anyone's interested: http://store.bandmerch.com/nin/product/a74061b001/still-cd.html

Ordered Still on Feb 27, then today after more than one month wait Bandmerch says the parcel was likely 'lost during transit'. I asked if it was possible to get another CD but apparently it's sold out again. I got my money back and now I'll ask to @heavenly_bearded (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=341) if he has one to sell.

Bandmerch sucks.

Matt Skiba Of Alkaline Trio Discussing "Two Princes" By The Spin Doctors:

It sucked. Oh, man. Even then I wasn’t drinking the Kool-Aid. I was like, “What is this? Why are they on Lollapalooza? Keep that shit over there. Nine Inch Nails and the Spin Doctors are playing together? Are you fucking kidding me?” It’s weird man. It’s really interesting, though.

I ordered mine a month ago as well. Received it yesterday. Don't lose hope!
