Matt Skiba Of Alkaline Trio Discussing "Two Princes" By The Spin Doctors:

Of course the reference is wrong. Spin Doctors weren't on the first Lollapalooza tour. Not sure if that happened in subsequent years.

Going through watching the X-files again.

I noticed in episode 7 of season 2 there is a mock "March of the Pigs" playing in the background in one of the scenes. Laughed a little then had to go check if the songs had been posted anywhere, I couldn't find any credits for that song but it sure sounds like it, I guess just a way to get around legal fees or something.

Greg Puciato is almost finished recording an album with "one of the guys from Nine Inch Nails".

Most obvious suggestion would be a new error album and he has counted Atticus as part of NIN?

As much as I'd love it to be, previous interviews would point to it being unlikely - not to mention that if he was talking about Error, he'd probably have just said it as that's the obvious choice. BUT I CAN DREAM

Greg Puciato: My favorite Nine Inch Nails record is actually an EP that Trent Reznor did called Still. He was supposed to score that movie One Hour Photo. They didn't use his score so he took those songs and a couple other instrumentals and made Still. There's a song called "Leaving Hope". Nine Inch Nails has never played it live, and it's absolutely the most gut-wrenching song you'll ever hear. It's the sound of someone in throes of the bottom of the bipolar spike. I've probably listened to it a thousand times.

The plot thickens (http://www.revolvermag.com/news/interview-greg-puciato-of-dillinger-escape-plan-talks-new-album-and-side-projects-2.html):

Then I’ve got another project with this guy Josh [Eustis], who is in Puscifer and does an electronic thing called Telefon Tel Aviv, and that’s called The Black Queen and that’s gonna come out for sure on Party Smasher. I think we’re just gonna start unloading now that we have a solid home for the label. We can just be like, “If I wanna do a weird avant-garde solo record and make 500 of them, here’s where it’s coming out.” It’s kind of a nice feeling.

Yeah, put me down for one of those, thank you.

Greg is such a cool dude. So is Jeff Tuttle. Got a chance to hang out with them in i wanna say 2011. Jeff Tuttle did guitars on an album my buddies put out, and it was a release party that Jeff and Greg were both at. Greg kept high-fiving me (at least 5 times) for the NIN back patch on my vest (at the time it was the only patch) and bought me a jack and coke. Cool dude, made me that much more receptive to DEP after that night.

He's also drumming with Paramore as well as bringing out a new EP in May. There should really be a separate thread for the dude, he's working as hard as Freese nowadays.

maybe one day we'll hear a cover of this song that doesn't just sound like a shitty carbon copy (excepting the dillinger escape plan version because it's actually well done).

also, it's been so long since i've accidentally heard disturbed that i had forgotten just how HORRIBLE that guy's voice is...

ETA: according to his wikipedia page "In 2013, The Rolling Stone magazine acknowledged David Draiman to be the best current rock singer in the world." yeah, right. there's no citation for this whatsoever, and i couldn't find anything about it by googling it...

Systrom downplays the idea that this courtship was in any way remarkable. “I think everyone thinks that the acquisition was made in a dark room with Trent Reznor music playing. Do you know what I mean? Like there was some dramatic thing,” he says, referencing a scene from The Social Network. “And it turns out that some of the biggest decisions get made relatively quickly, without much fanfare.”

Easiest way to tell if a "best of" list was made by some casual people who have heard (or heard of) NIN, Closer is the #1 song.
Don't get me wrong, I love Closer too, but anyone who has listened to enough of NIN to feel confident in making a top 10 list is not going to say Closer is the end all be all of Trent's musical career.

MrSlfDstruct
05-12-2013, 08:21 PM
I love me some Closer, but #1? Really? It's still strange to me that out of everything he's done, THAT is the most well known. It still doesn't seem like a radio/hit type song. But, you can tell some people just like that "shock value" in the lyrics. Which is odd to me.

I still love listening to it, although I was glad to see it tossed for NIN|JA. I've always liked it for all the little background type sounds that build throughout that don't really come across live.

On that same note, Last is one of my favorite songs (which isn't uncommon as I've gathered), and I always liked it for the same type of reason in that, while the guitar riff sounds the same throughout on the first listen, it actually changes subtly with each verse, getting heavier and heavier. I was super excited when it was announced for Rock Band, only to find that it's the same riff over and over :/

Vertigo
05-13-2013, 06:16 AM
Last does benefit a lot from some mild multitrack fiddling (thank you Rock Band). Great sound, but somewhat repetitive.

Anyway, as this is the NIN spotting thread... Lamborghini's just had its 50th anniversary, 350 cars totalling 190,000 horsepower descended on Italy and toured the country with a police escort, and from what I'm hearing and seeing, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And I'm stuck at home with massive exhaustion. That's What I Get. There, this post is now on-topic.

Not sure if this has been noted, but Trent's listed as one of the names interviewed in Louder Than Hell, a nearly 800 page oral history of heavy metal. The whole book is culled from over two decades of interviews, so it's likely his stuff is from a previous interview. Looks pretty interesting though, and comes out tomorrow on iTunes.

also, new Kanye album will be "dope", sound like NIN:

In late April, West visited Def Jam's New York offices – pregnant girlfriend Kim Kardashian reportedly in tow – to preview the disc. Sources familiar with the project say it's even darker and more twisted than 2010's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/my-beautiful-dark-twisted-fantasy-20101109), with one song that drew comparisons toNine Inch Nails (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/artists/nine-inch-nails).

Spin-magazine figures out your Lollapalooza experience so you don't miss a thing:

Recommendation: Nine Inch Nails. There's a reason their set completely envelops the other two — Trent Reznor and his tech-addled gloom goons offer a black hole of a show that has no problem swallowing up weird, damaged women-as-assemblage-art-pieces and arena rock acts in one fell gulp. Their set will be incredible and who knows when you'll get a chance to experience it again. Be there, start to finish.

Am I the only who feels like he's not that enthusiastic when speaking of NIN. It know it's a silly statement as I'm only basing my thoughts on print interviews but still, it's like "bah .. we were gonna write 2 songs but that's gonna take a couple years now and we're not gonna play them live either. Oh and there's no new record scheduled."

One has to wonder why is he bringing back the band so soon. What's interesting is that when he announced the last live performance, he pretty much hinted pretty fast that we would hear new material but that he was just done with live shows.
Now it's the other way around. No new songs but a tour.

We all know what that means ...

Huh. They're blowing up nin.com (http://forum.nin.com/bb/read.php?40,1445734,1445739#msg-1445739)

Interesting. I gotta say, as someone who took over a forum that completely vanished, in a way I'm glad the old posts are irretrievable. It blows my mind a little bit that there's someone on nin.com with over 43,000 posts, and that they were the very first person to respond, and the response was "Please don't delete my 43,000 posts because they are important."

ETS was born when SLS Forums completely vanished, and ETS was better. Somewhat ironically, ETS completely vanished, and this new ETS came out of those ashes, and I think it's the best it's ever been here. I wouldn't object to a read-only archive of the old site, but life goes on without it. There were forums on nin.com/nothingrecords.com in 1997 that likewise completely vanished. Who here remembers that? Hell, the 2000-era nin.com forums didn't even keep history beyond an arbitrary number of posts. What about The Spiral?

I don't think it's jacking each other off to say that I like it here than I've liked any of the nin.com forums. The current incarnation of nin.com was technically superior to the prior version of ETS, but the tolerance for inane bullshit on nin.com from the administration was always greater than what we have here, and I think it suffered for that. But I would be disappointed if there weren't an official forum. From the very start of building fan websites, I've never seen it as competition, so much as an effort to complement what's out there. Any competitive drive was merely to make things better overall - I'd update my fan page to be better, and someone would make theirs even better than mine, and this cycle happened over and over, ultimately evolving out of personal fan pages and into the Nine Inch Nails Wikipedia article(s), which essentially do a better job of what the fan pages used to do back before there was a Wikipedia.

I kind of miss the glut of fan-run websites. It brought variety and new approaches to things. Oh man, am I ever getting sidetracked here.

I'm glad nin.com is getting an overhaul, and I'm glad they're doing things in a way I probably wouldn't do them. I'll check it out when it opens up, but I'm pretty sure I'll continue doing the ETS thing. We've actually got a pretty big overhaul coming up soon as well, but that won't even begin to happen until I send DigitalChaos my vBulletin credentials, which I should probably do now before I forget.

MAD

Regarding the nin.com overhaul, I'm happy that's happening. It was about time.
But it's not the forums there I care about, but the entire website and especially remix.nin.com.

Since the start I had an issue with remix.nin.com. Imho, it kinda killed the remix community we had here and on ninremixes.com. People stopped posting remixes here and went there instead. Where the amazing jewels that were created were covered in a deep slime of 0-100 random votes and crap "remixes". remix.nin.com was always a hard website to use as an end user. The playlists were nice but in order to listen to something really good you had to go through a lot of high rated but bad remixes. And we're back to the voting system. I don't care much about what they're doing with nin.com nor remix.nin.com as long as they change the voting system. That's all I want.

Should we split this into a new topic for nin.com redesign discussion?

Nine Inch Nails and the Industrial Uprising - hour and half documentary about Nine Inch Nails! How did this get our there without being noticed?

Because it's a cheapo garbage rock doc, just like a million others out there, which uses pretentious talking-heads interviews with people no one cares about, a ripoff sound-alike soundtrack, horribly poor-quality source footage and entertains God-knows-who, that's why. NIN deserves better.

There is more than enough high-quality footage of the band in performance and behind the scenes, to say nothing of the huge quantity of interesting and historical interviews with Trent out there to compile a feature-length documentary that would cover the whole history and actually be watchable. It's just a matter of finding someone with the time and resources to assemble it. I'm talking about a real documentary crew with professional researchers, archivists, and an editing team. Expensive but worth it in the results; there are many AWESOME rock-umentaries out there to prove that. This is not one of them.

actually, that clip posted has a great interview with Genesis P-Orridge.

Interesting. I gotta say, as someone who took over a forum that completely vanished, in a way I'm glad the old posts are irretrievable
I mostly agree except for the other day when a few people here were looking for that old Kleptonin Trent-blowing-out-birthday-candles GIF, which was posted here about 900 times and I used to have it on some hard drive around here or some photobucket account, but I can't find it anywhere. And when I Googled "Kleptonin Trent Renzor" I got some of your wedding photos.

But, yeah, to me that old stuff gets stale because the url links go away and you end up with a bunch of boring irrelevant stuff with bad links and bad images. Back during the web cam days, I thought that stuff would be fun to look at 10 years later but then I looked at it 5 years later and it was already boring.

Sure, I guess the P-orridge clip is worth watching. I don't want to disparage the efforts of that documentary's filmmakers too much because they obviously don't have cooperation of the rights holders, or a budget to get it. There's only so many ways to tell a story without actually being able to show what happened.

You raise an interesting point about preservation. The more I think about it, the more I believe a large-scale "real" documentary would be the best way to preserve all those moments from the actual history of the band. Something like the Closure documentary on those Self Destruct tours, but for the whole NIN saga. Jeff Stein's The Kids Are Alright is one of my favourite movies ever; to have something similar, but with Trent Reznor in the Pete Townshend role would be incredible.

Interweave live performance videos with contemporary TR interviews about the approach the band was taking at that time, sprinkle in a few pieces about historic moments with overlaid commentary from the players of the time. Yeah, it would only cost a couple million dollars...

The DVD for this festival released today in South Korea.
Sadly it doesn't include any song performed by NIN. Just a short bootleg-quality video.

By the way, I still don't know why Taiji(the promoter of the festival, Korean musician) cast limp bizkit and NIN on the same date.
Shit, they fought to headline the festival. Eventually taiji did it, but the worst lineup I've ever seen.

I know I shouldn't be a glory hog, but I gotta say, one of the big reasons I started the NIN Hotline back in 1999 was because I wanted to do a better job at posting and archiving NIN news than the other sites that were doing it at the time. I had been working in the newsroom of a newspaper at the time, and one of the things that I went to great lengths to make sure everyone at the Hotline did was cite your sources. And while it's cool that a newer entity, http://nincentral.tumblr.com, is getting reblogged by the official tumblr, they don't credit a god damn thing they post, and that kind of sucks. Part of the magic of the internet is that it's really easy to show people where you gained the knowledge that you're redistributing. The whole foundation of the WWW is hyperlinks. And while I don't want to discourage people from doing new stuff (and I really really don't want to start a tumblr account), I feel like a linkback to the site would be nice.

What the n00bs don't remember is that those journals and protools screenshots weren't posted the way you see them now. You had to view them through a square keyhole Flash thing that I'm having trouble describing right now. Chad Keenan (mokeejc) took hundreds, if not thousands of screenshots while nin.com was in its formative stages, organized them and posted them to Halo Ninetynine (http://www.theninhotline.net/halo99/), which I've happily kept online in its original form for over 13 years.

I guess that's the culture of Tumblr, and that's probably a big reason I never took to it. As an amateur archivist, the erosion of information grates on me. It's stupid, too, because it's not really as though the stuff on the NIN Hotline would be there if it weren't for nin.com... Crediting sources is just one of those things I get soapboxy about, and I wanted to rant a little. Maybe I should completely reorganize the Hotline... there's so much in the archives that you'd probably never know was there if you didn't navigate away from the front page.

The NIN hotline has been my homepage for a very long time! Fuck google, someone opens a browser on my computer (or laptop) and they go straight to the hotline, lol.

Even if I find out more about the band by reading ETS, it's still fun to have it, and every now and then something not on ETS will pop up (like that info about what Jerome Dhillon was doing this day with Nearly, that was a neat little tidbit of news I wouldn't have known otherwise, so kudos to @Leviathant (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=1) for keeping the hotline on life support after all these years!

I guess that's the culture of Tumblr, and that's probably a big reason I never took to it. I use my personal tumblr for the whole sharing of someone else's work thing, but my Atticus Ross blog is almost entirely stuff I've sourced, and as often as possible it's rare or hard to come by. Tumblr CAN be used for original posts and all kinds of great stuff ... but it's easier to do what most blogs do. Which is true of news aggregation sites that are as old as TNH after all!

This is one of my biggest pet peeves, followed very closely by when blogs (such as nincentral) also include a link to themselves as the source. Not to mention when it comes to photos in particular, a lot of blogs post shitty quality and/or their own edited creations, and it would be great to know the source for finding the originals.
