I recently found this on reddit. This is Trent Reznor's posts to the The Prodigy, which at the time was a community message board in the days when only a few had the interwebs.


There is lot of great info here, Trent talks about NIN releases, tours, videos and album covers. Highlights include:

Interwebs heh. "No webs" actually. Dial up crap bbs. There were hundreds of bulletin board systems but Prodigy was affiliated with Sears and had a crude GUI and people didn't have to know DOS. Users were given random alphanumeric user handles like SSWN25A.

ah, I had forgotten these! They seem to pop up every now and again, and I re-read them for kicks. The one thing I liked was the US vs Import HLAH single, and how the Import was the way TR had originally visioned it, and TVT was too cheap to print color.

I always thought Fixed was limited to 50,000 in the U.S., but it appears it was 60,000 with and additional 20,000 when they sold out. I still have no idea how many copies were printed for the original release for Closer To God. I remember back in the day (1995) the U.S. Fixed and Closer To God CDs were IMPOSSIBLE to find and you had to buy the expensive imports if you wanted the tracks. I remember spending around $45 dollars just to get Fixed and Closer pt 1/pt two. That was before it was easy to get everything on the internet. Damn, that just made me feel old.

Great read :). Brings back cool memories of hunting through the NIN section of Rocky Road record store in Den Haag for new and obscure releases, trying to figure out what was a single, an ep or an lp, with no clue to what was what. No real internet to speak of back then, and fuck all media coverage of NIN. In the end I did what any proper fan would do, and bought it all :D.

I read Seems Like Salvation until I discovered the hotline, then never really went back. I seem to remember 75% of the news stories were about Manson, whom I wasn't a huge fan of at the time.

I remember downloading an MP3 of TPD in late 1996. Somebody at KROQ leaked it.

Actually, it was a RealAudio file, which had been the dominant Internet audio format for a couple years. MP3 usage was nascent at that point, and wouldn't really kick in until 1997 when Winamp was released. Even then, MP3 decoding was still too processor intensive for some people's computers.

I posted the original RA file on here a few years back. Here it is again; it should still be playable with VLC. If that file had been a cassette tape, I would have shredded it by the end of 1996 from overplay.
