I recently found this on reddit. This is Trent Reznor's posts to the The Prodigy, which at the time was a community message board in the days when only a few had the interwebs.

There is lot of great info here, Trent talks about NIN releases, tours, videos and album covers. Highlights include:

1. The Broken 3" vs. the 99 Track version
2. The limited release of Fixed (60,000 copies initially with an additional 20,000 after they sold out)
3. Supernaut and TVT's buy out of Wax Trax!
4. Broken Videos-Themes and Censorship
5. TVT's meddling with the singles.

Enjoy!

It's just Prodigy, not The Prodigy, hehe. Kids these days!

I'll just leave this (http://theninhotline.net/archives/articles/manager/list_articles.php?category=all) here. In case you've got nothing going on this weekend

Interwebs heh. "No webs" actually. Dial up crap bbs. There were hundreds of bulletin board systems but Prodigy was affiliated with Sears and had a crude GUI and people didn't have to know DOS. Users were given random alphanumeric user handles like SSWN25A.

ah, I had forgotten these! They seem to pop up every now and again, and I re-read them for kicks. The one thing I liked was the US vs Import HLAH single, and how the Import was the way TR had originally visioned it, and TVT was too cheap to print color.

I always thought Fixed was limited to 50,000 in the U.S., but it appears it was 60,000 with and additional 20,000 when they sold out. I still have no idea how many copies were printed for the original release for Closer To God. I remember back in the day (1995) the U.S. Fixed and Closer To God CDs were IMPOSSIBLE to find and you had to buy the expensive imports if you wanted the tracks. I remember spending around $45 dollars just to get Fixed and Closer pt 1/pt two. That was before it was easy to get everything on the internet. Damn, that just made me feel old.

He mentioned having two songs for the Crow soundtrack. Dead souls and something else. Wonder what that was planned to be.

Yeah the 90s where fun. Geeking out over little import stickers on fixed when i first bought it on cd.

Great read :). Brings back cool memories of hunting through the NIN section of Rocky Road record store in Den Haag for new and obscure releases, trying to figure out what was a single, an ep or an lp, with no clue to what was what. No real internet to speak of back then, and fuck all media coverage of NIN. In the end I did what any proper fan would do, and bought it all :D.

Wow, thank you for another way to revisit some great memories. Damn, still remember when I first happened upon "Seems Like Salvation" (I believe was its name) and being so excited to find that resource. As others have already stated, I miss those days of digging through record bins and finding NIN imports in my local record store. Good stuff...

Hi everybody.
Today's update:
'Fixed' release date has been delayed once again (by WEA) to Dec. 7 (for sure). I am not on any other networks (except PAN), so Ender or
whatever his name is is wrong. Sorry. MTV rejected the 'pinion' video but for some reason aired it unedited last 120 min. I think it was an error on their part. Does anyone really find that clip offensive? (side note: MTV's reason for rejecting it was: 'we can't show the human form in any sort of bondage.' my response: 'what about Madonna?' response: 'Madonna is Madonna.' -true story)

Fucking MTV.

Seems like salvation was awesome. Also nineinchnails.net I think was the other dope one.

IIRC, part of the pinion video was used in the opening credits for 120 minutes. I also remember seeing the pinion video a couple times on that show.

I read Seems Like Salvation until I discovered the hotline, then never really went back. I seem to remember 75% of the news stories were about Manson, whom I wasn't a huge fan of at the time.

The best bit about those posts is the whole "You're not Trent Reznor, you big liar! Oh, wait, yes you are. Carry on Mr Reznor."

It wasn't 120 Minutes that used it. It was Alternative Nation (with Kennedy).

I just re-read this Prodigy stuff, it's been a long time, and part of it reminded me of something:

TO: ALL
FROM: MELODY MASON (DTST47E)
SUBJECT: NIN: SUCKS
My EX-boyfriend was in love with trent Reznor. He is a proud gay man now. NIN is just an eighties version of TECHNO. TECHNO SUCKS. It's just one guy playing with computers and getting off on it.
GET A REAL BAND
The time I met Reznor backstage in Detroit, we were all discussing the White Stripes recent tour (at that time) and Reznor said those exact words (in bold) about the White Stripes live. I remember at the time thinking, huh? I guess now I get the joke,

Per wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winamp#Initial_releases), the first release of Winamp wasn't released until April '97. This postdates the actual CD release of TPD.

Information about Gatorade commercial (apparently it was regarding a sound-alike rip-off of Down In It):

I remember downloading an MP3 of TPD in late 1996. Somebody at KROQ leaked it.

Can't remember what I even played MP3s on back then, WMP? Some command line thing?

Winamp STILL whips the llama's ass.

But this is what preceded it (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinPlay3). I remember getting that and a 96kbps MP3 of "Friday I'm in Love" over ICQ file transfer in 1996 from my friend — it took over an hour on dial-up, LOL!

jeez I'm an old man

"Reznor and his band kicked things off with "Tell A Lie" from "Pretty Hate Machine." During the tune, Reznor tossed a few profane phrases at the camera people, and turned his back to them as often as he could." (http://theninhotline.net/archives/articles/manager/display_article.php?id=619)

I so wish I could have been there. That is far and away my favorite track from PHM.

Actually, it was a RealAudio file, which had been the dominant Internet audio format for a couple years. MP3 usage was nascent at that point, and wouldn't really kick in until 1997 when Winamp was released. Even then, MP3 decoding was still too processor intensive for some people's computers.

I posted the original RA file on here a few years back. Here it is again; it should still be playable with VLC. If that file had been a cassette tape, I would have shredded it by the end of 1996 from overplay.

Edit: Good lord people, I just re-read this thread. Stop making me repeat myself (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/threads/1332-Trent-Reznor-s-posts-to-Prodigy-(not-the-band)-circa-92?p=62860#post62860) almost verbatim every few years! According to my Mediafire account, I originally uploaded that file in 2009, so there must be yet another post from me just like this on the old boards. Also, get off my lawn.

Relevant: 20 years ago today (https://twitter.com/mikko/status/763373528703983616), the first known MP3 rips ever traded via "Compress 'da audio" scene (including "Hurt")!
