I use to love the silent ballet. I guess now I am partial to boomkat and when the needle drops.Pitchfork should have given fiona the number one spot. Come on it killed both number 1 and 2. = (

I'm biased against Fiona Apple, so I thought her album was too high on the list. Kendrick Lamar was a good choice though, if that album doesn't restore your faith in hip hop, nothing will. Frank Ocean was my second favorite album of the year like Pitchfork, just awesome and damn near perfect, but nothing was topping Grizzly Bear for me. Here's my list for 2012:
1. Grizzly Bear- Shields
2. Frank Ocean- Channel Orange
3. Japandroids- Celebration Rock
4. Spiritualized- Sweet Heart, Sweet Light
5. Kendrick Lamar- Good Kid, Maad City

if anything, that belonged here:

so perhaps better that it evolved into something more deserving of it's own thread?

The sad thing is, i must be really fucking old because, browsing through these lists, I have no goddamn idea on what almost ANYTHING being listed is... wow...
welcome to 2012? I should get out of my 90's time machine now.

if it's any consolation, my list is highly tuned in to the styles i most listen to, being synth/post-punk/shoegaze, etc. and most of those bands did little-to-fuck-all to earn any mainstream recognition (old artists/new albums, or too far under the radar to matter to any "hip" sites), which is most unfortunate as i found a lot to love this year.

the only things on my list that got any attention outside of my own world/scene/friends/etc. are tamaryn, diiv, soft moon, 2:54, scott walker, swans, savages, and merchandise. i'd like to think it lends well to tastemaking, but i'm probably just unhip. either way...

I politely disagree. I think people are interested in this subject. Such as me . I loved the silent ballet and now I am having a hard time finding an end of the year obscure instrumental list.

Oh, I'm so bloody dreadful at this, but I'll throw my hat in the ring anyway. My brain is the opposite of the brain of the fella in High Fidelity, organizing things into lists comes as easily to me as writing poetry in Inuit. That said,

Saint Etienne - Words and Music
Aquarian - Obsidian EP
Lilacs & Champagne - s/t
Belbury Poly - The Belbury Tales
School of Seven Bells - Put Your Sad Down EP
Scott Walker - Bish Bosch
Brian Eno - Lux
Sean Price - Mic Tyson
Evitan - Speed of Life
El Perro Del Mar - Pale Fire
Fennesz - Aun
Katy B - Danger EP
Lindstrom - Six Cups of Rebel
Ice Choir - Afar
Frank Ocean - Channel Orange
Vatican Shadow - Ornamented Walls
The Soft Moon - Zeros
Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music
Moon Duo - Circles
Andy Stott - Luxury Problems
That Kendrick Lamar record everyone likes, but Ab Soul's Control System even moreso, and Schoolboy Q's Habits and Contradictions everso slightly less.
Vladislav Delay - Kuopio
100s - Ice Cold Perm
Bat For Lashes - The Haunted Man
Chromatics - Kill For Love
E-40 & Too $hort - History, vols. 1 & 2
Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage
Miguel - Kaleidoscope Dream

I think that's it. I was going to include reissues and tracks, but fuck it. Also, nevermind my list, I tend to spend my days listening to "Suedehead" on repeat over and over.

Edit: Stoked to see Scott Walker come up a bunch. I've fallen pretty hard for Bish Bosch.

Boomkat's lists always have a lot to agree with.

Steve Wilson's list is pretty awesome. The Ramleh 8LP box seems epic.

Glad to see tons of Vatican Shadow mentioned above (though Kneel Before Religious Icons was a 2011 release IIRC). September Cell and Atta's Apartment Slated for Destruction were some of my favourite releases of the year.

Aluk Todolo - Occult Rock

Wasn't aware of this, thanks! Descension and Firsternis are great.

I guess most were itching to post their best of 2012. Oh well, when in Rome...

(in no particular order)
Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind
Crystal Castles - III
Curren$y - The Stoned Immaculate
Death Grips - The Money Store / No Love Deep Web
El-P - Cancer For Cure
Frank Ocean - Channel Orange
Gaza - No Absolution in Human Suffering
Grimes - Visions
HEALTH - Max Payne 3 OST
How to Dress Well - Total Loss
Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid M.A.A.D City
Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music
Tame Impala - Lonerism

Overall, Frank Ocean's 'Channel Orange' was my favorite. I played the shit out of that album and I'm still not tired of it.

That was great. "people humming transcendentally over distorted tape loops of concrete being laid (The Wire)" is just brilliant.
