I could have sworn there was already an Autechre thread on the new ETS, but I guess not!

New album Exai out in March. (http://warp.net/records/autechre/exai) Sweet.

Way too many steps, an unintuitive UI, and a site which you have to register for with frequent crashing. When I finally got the download to start it went at a crawl (160/Kbs).. actually, it's still going two hours later. It took me 30 minutes just to make the purchase and start the download. I'm buying a tshirt next time and pirating. Screw this.

Jinsai

that's weird. I've always found purchasing stuff through Bleep to be relatively hassle free. I still haven't bought the new Autechre album yet though. I need to get my finances in order, and I'm trying to tell myself not to buy expensive vinyl

I'm about halfway through this album on headphones. Some of the tracks really aren't quite doing it for me, but others seem to have that autechre magic. Like most of their albums, repeated listens are going to be required.

Anyone else listening to this thing?

Auteche's material from the mid 90s sounds so far ahead of its time. Heard a blistering track the other day and it was from 1998 wtf? Each record they have put out since those days has had a few good tunes, this is in my mind their most consistent one. I wish Aphex Twin was still as prolific as these guys.

Magtig

Okay, this album is just ridiculous; the perfect blend between abstract and accessible for me. And dear god, the ambient textures are incredible. It manages to be some of the most sparkling gritty work in their catalog, if that makes sense.

Good list. But just out of curiosity, why did you put Confield before Incanabula or Untilted? Confield is my favourite, but I think it might be one of the most challenging for a new listener.

Confield is fucking genius. There are some bangin' tracks on EP7 too, but I think this new record sits along with any of their best "holy shit, what the fuck, hot goddamn" material.

Confield is probably my favorite too (though really, I'm pretty eager at this point to call Exai their best album to date), but I put it third because Tri and Amber warm you up to it. To be honest, I think that Incanabula is unrefined by comparison to most of their work, and it doesn't have as developed of a "personality." For me, Incanabula is a fascinating relic... and I put Untilted last because I really do think that's their most alienating album. It's harsh, very sparse, and more so than anything else they've put out, it feels intentionally minimalist and challenging to me.

I'm not bashing anything Autechre's put out though. I love all their albums, and that list isn't a "best to worst" progression, but more of a suggestion of how to dive in.

Pitchfork can FUCK OFF when it comes to electronic music. They have no goddamn idea what they're talking about, and the only time they get excited about an electronic album is when Boards of Canada releases an anniversary edition of Music Has the Right to Children.

Good to know that Exai isn't anywhere near as good as the new Dirty Projectors album or some bullshit.

"If you hear an interesting sound or idea from Autechre, you're bound to hear it again and again before a track's end."

OH NO! Please, fucking spare me! Anything but that! Save me and play me some fucking Wavves.

This album is seriously mind-bendingly good. It's worth noting that I haven't listened to Autechre since LP5, so it's been some time. I've never heard anything quite like this before, and the quality is diamond-like. I'm really, really impressed. Probably on my fourth or fifth listen and I'm completely blown away more and more as I hear it. It's so alien, as if I'm listening to an audio version of the Arecibo message.

I would say I am a pretty big Autechre fan, I like all there albums. For whatever reason on the first couple times through I felt this new one was kind of impenetrable, but I have been listening pretty much non-stop and it is finally really clicking with me. And agree with most the comments that it is among their best. What they do on every album is so different and different from other music in general sometimes it takes me a while to break through, but when you do it is very rewarding.

eversonpoe
02-22-2013, 12:35 PM
finally got around to listening today...at first i wasn't getting into it, but as i progressed further into the album, i found myself transfixed.

so far, my two favourites are "bladelores" and "1 1 is" (though the latter was challenging to listen to because of the phasing...maybe that's why i liked it so much? i enjoy challenging music.)

Clownboat
02-24-2013, 02:53 PM
Yeah, those two tracks are something else. The end of "1 1 is" especially is nuts. I can't believe it exists. My personal favorite is "inrite (get 0)" for reasons I can't really articulate right now... Sometime I'll try to put it into words. "YJY UX" is a hell of a way to close it.

I've been finally pulling myself away from Exai and listening to more of the back catalog. I forgot how much I loved Tri Repetae. I'm jumping around a lot, but the big things that won't leave my headphones are Untilted and Oversteps.

How have I been missing out on Autechre? Everything I'm hearing is fucking brilliant. I even dreamed about them last night, no joke.

Jon, what'd you think?

Were you first in line wearing the PHM hoodie? My wife and I were behind you.

The show was amazing. I didn't mind that Rob Hall played for an extra ~25 minutes at the beginning; he cut his 15 minute set before Autechre short later on. Cygnus absolutely killed it, and was my wife's favorite of the night. He had great crowd interaction, and it was fun to watch him headbang around. The first time he did his little point and thumbs up, he was pointing right at my wife and I. :)

We were front row, just barely left of center. We were, in fact, right in front of Rob's (Ae) speaker/monitor. We stepped back a foot and had a perfect diagonal view of Rob Hall, we were about 3 feet right of Cygnus, and 2-3 feet left of Rob during Autechre, leaning on the stage.

Autechre's set was otherworldly. It definitely sounds like a logical progression and extension of L-event. If I had to be more specific, Gantz_Graf and L-event made a beautiful love child on-stage tonight.

Obviously, there was no setlist, but my wife almost managed to get the itinerary. One of the security guards took it back from her, but she got a picture of it. I'll post it tomorrow when I get home to the computer.

WARNING: They only had small, medium, and large for the t-shirts. The guy selling the merch even said this was the first time he could think of where there wasn't at least an XL. Price was 30 bucks, 2 color options, with identical layout/design.

What did you think, @Clownboat (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=24)?

Jon, great way of describing the show! I wasn't wearing anything obvious, but I think we may have been standing right next to each other at one point. I was a few rows back on the left side, and by the middle of the show I was up against the stage. There was a guy and his wife immediately to my right. :)

Cygnus' set was totally unexpected and really awesome. I'd never heard him before, but I'm definitely going to check his stuff out. He struck me as sort of a combo of Warp artists. I heard a lot of Aphex Twin influence, but it had some Autechre-like aspects as well.

Autechre's show was intense, a total onslaught from start to finish. I had no idea a couple of those L-Event tracks could sound so sinister. I'm really glad I brought earplugs, because I'd be 100% deaf right now otherwise.

I think the intensity wasn't expected, so I didn't have as much fun during the show as I thought I would. If I could do it again, I think I'd prefer to have been in the middle of the crowd up near the center. But man, looking back already, I can't believe how crazy of a show that was. I hope they tour again soon!

I was so exhausted by the end (and stoned out of my mind on edibles) I didn't even look at the merch. Shame, I really wish I got a shirt!

All in all, though, fucking great show. If anyone else is wondering if it's worth it, it is. I rented a car and drove down from Madison and got a hotel *just* for tonight, and it was completely worth the money spent.

Jon

Ha, if the female was blonde, we were actually the couple next to them. They kinda snuck up front from a little ways back as the show went on.

My wife had to sit out the last 15-20 minutes of Autechre's set. There's no reason to get into personal detail; it just got a little too intense for her (and she had 30dB-rated earplugs). There were these "double bass waves" (best way I can describe it) coming from Rob's monitor that were extremely intense.

My wife's phone was stolen (like the tourists we are) and she does not back up pictures to the Cloud so no itinerary shot. I do have it memorized though:

1). Rob Hall = 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm
2). Cygnus = 9:00 pm - 9:45 pm
3). Rob Hall = 9:45 pm - 10:00 pm
4). Autechre = 10:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Rob Hall played an extra 25 minutes to begin with, but only played 10 his second time up. That means everything was approx. 20-30 minutes "behind". Doors opened at 8:05, the show had already started, which is funny since the tickets said the show started at 9? Anywho, man I could ramble about this concert forever.

These were collected from YouTube and WATMM. There are complete shows for every date except the 3 in Canada. I did no additional tagging except for the Portland show, which had the wrong date on it. The folder names are the tapers; I will be adding .txt files for every show later with more detailed taping info (including who shared the files for the 2 ones marked "unknown"). Portsmouth was taped by YELLOW and should be going up later today.

Even if all you have is a minute or two, it's worth sharing!

EDIT: I have no footage of Autechre from Toronto, but included a snippet of Cygnus' remix of Autechre's "Eggshell" from his set.

Even if all you have is a minute or two, it's worth sharing!

EDIT: I have no footage of Autechre from Toronto, but included a snippet of Cygnus' remix of Autechre's "Eggshell" from his set.

You're in for a treat. The "album" they've been creating/playing this leg has progressed amazingly.

Not sure if you've listened to any of the early AENA 2015 recordings, but it'd be something to compare after you see them in Denver.

I just saw Autechre play live and my life is fucking changed. I sat through about 20 minutes of some hipster next to me complaining about how "if I wanted to see someoe do Ableton for a while, i could turn on a camera in my apartment." Thank the gods when those douchebags finally got fed up and left.

And yeah "dude dressed like a lumberjack," I'm sorry neither you or your girlfriend (who was dramatically dancing to all of the music before Autechre got on, and then just looked confused while projecting this hilarious "I don't like it" face) were into it. I want to thank you for leaving.

And yeah, Thanks autechre for the crazy religious experience.

Amazing. Transcendent. Pretty flowery words. Holy fuck.

I'm currently uploading the raw user18081971 downloads to MEGA, but I will be updating the AENA 2015 (https://mega.nz/#F!DdljyKgD!HrKw803O_gQ5u8YRM8f6_A) archive after that is finished with a recording from last night.

That makes 9 "complete" recordings so far from this tour (Portland, Seattle, Chicago, Brooklyn, Boston, Portsmouth, Philadelphia, Orlando, and Los Angeles). There is also a near complete (52 mins.) set from YouTube that hasn't been identified yet.

I was kinda bummed that the only t-shirts left at the LA show were medium, small, and ladies sizes. Even when I've been in better shape I never really comfortable could fit into a medium.

The show was just incredible though. The sound was perfectly contained, and just thinking about the way those bass rolls would flow out and run through your body gives me chills.

Can't wait till you upload the recording from the LA show Jon.

@Jinsai (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=272), you've seen other Ae shows, right? Did this show differ at all for you? Chicago was my first time!

Honestly, I was a bit bewildered by it all. I'm used to harsh music and intense shows, but I don't think I really appreciated it until I heard the recording. Seeing them live was intense, man, a total assault, but I wanted to get the most out of the experience, so I decided to take my earplugs out halfway through the set. When you're high and in the front row at an Autechre show, don't do that. Holy hell. Even though I put them back in pretty fast, I still didn't make it through the set and left 15 minutes early. @Jon (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=457), you weren't the only ones, no worries. :P

Listening to the recordings is an experience, though. If anyone's reading this and missed a show, take a listen, it's really good.

@Jinsai (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=272), you've seen other Ae shows, right? Did this show differ at all for you? Chicago was my first time!

The previous show I saw before this one was relatively similar. The first time I saw them it was too much... the beats were constantly fucking with me, falling in and out of time. It started to make me feel sort of sick after a while, and the club was so hot... after a bit I had to go into the lobby and lie down. That was also a much longer performance, and while they still didn't do flashy visuals, they didn't turn the lights off in the club.

The second time I saw them was at the same venue, but it was a much more energetic crowd, and the music was much more "entertaining" and danceable... or at least that's how it felt to me. Maybe I just wasn't "prepared" the first time, and I wasn't familiar enough with their music to really "get it." That show was great though, and it was also longer than the recent sets.

This last set was incredible for me, though I went in feeling like I knew what to expect. I like listening to the recordings, it's great to have them, but the experience of being at the show was something really amazing for me. The recordings can't capture the perfect mix levels, the huge (but subtle) bass rolls, the strange hypnotic energy of being in pitch darkness while you go into a rhythmic trance with everyone around you.

Definitely the best show I've seen all year. For me though, I guess I was expecting it to be louder based on reviews I'd been reading. The levels at the LA show were really masterfully contained, and the sound was amazing. Judging from what other people have been saying though, it seems like it's either right up your alley and the greatest shit ever, or really off-putting and alienating. And yeah, I do feel like there's a sort of mental space you need to be able to tap into to really enjoy the live show. I know that I really didn't "enjoy" that first show I saw at all.

SF was transcendental. Was pitch black. I really got the same vibes as I would at a Sunn O))) show for some reason. It's just an amazing experience. Also, love the sound system at Mezzanine. Saw Sunn there 2 years ago and the place rumbles.

@Jon (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=457), you weren't the only ones, no worries. :P

My wife left early, I couldn't because I was pretty much "bewildered" like you were. Like a deer in headlights. To be completely honest (and I know I was foolish being where I was), I didn't wear any sort of ear protection. Those last 15 minutes, standing directly in front of Rob's speaker/monitor as it threw off wave after wave of bass, was something else entirely. I used the word "otherworldly" in my review right after the show, and I stand by that.

My descriptions may sound ambiguous, but it was the best electronic show I've seen in a very long time. So much so, that I felt the need to start an archive with everything I could find from the tour.

Boy, these recordings sure are something else! It's a real treat to be able to compare and note the differences... each one is familiar yet totally alien at the same time. Love it.

Went to the Toronto show and was completely blown away by their set. Venetian Snares' set was fucking mental and the two of them together was absolutely a religious experience for me just like @Jinsai (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=272) said. I managed to record a few short clips of his set that turned out pretty well but I'm really hoping someone managed to capture the whole thing. Wasn't his typical live fare at all, it was like some crazy modular stuff - super intricate and dark as hell.

If the European and North American shows were a preview for the next album's sound that shit is going to be off the goddamn chain.

I'm not sure if this was ever mentioned on the old board:

After countless listens to EP7, I'm convinced the hidden pregap track is meant to be reversed and appended to the last track -- this closer mimics the track structure of LP5.

The US pressing of LP5 has about 3 minutes of silence shaved from the end of the last track, and the hidden track placed as a separate Track 12. There just happens to be approximately 3 minutes of silence in the EP7 pregap track, which can be trimmed and then voila, a separate Track 12 just like LP5.

The silence is at the end of the track, so reversing the track causes the silence to come first. If you simply reverse the pregap track and append it to track 11, the 2-in-1 track is still cut on a sector boundary.

This could also explain why the track is present before a whole other EP on the EP box set. The particular disc ends with EP7, so doing what I've described above still gives you a "complete" rip of EP7 even from the box set version.

I returned my Nothing edition of the EP7 CD to the retailer because it didn't have that track. Had no idea they'd hidden it in a pregap AGAIN on the EP collection. Is it on any of the vinyl issues?

Not that I have seen, it is definitely not available on the standard UK vinyl releases for EP7.1 and EP7.2. The song was even removed from the second printing/pressing of the UK CD.

That wonderful Russian torrent site has the proper edition available as an image+cue in the mean time, so you can check it out yourself if so inclined (don't forget to split tracks by Indices).

"Booth and Brown will be handling a short residency in April, with shows on April 5, 12, 19 and 26 at 4pm UK / 11am ET that can be streamed via the NTS site (https://www.nts.live/projects/autechre-nts-residency/).

Anyone familiar with Autechre will no doubt know that it’s customary for the duo to make radio broadcasts around their releases. In 1997, they sent a special hour-long mix to radio stations across the world to promote the release of Chiastic Slide and more recently appeared on Alaskan radio to promote their last album elseq 1–5 in 2016.
They also appeared on NTS back in 2016 (https://forum.watmm.com/topic/89806-downloadslive-at-nts-radio/), playing tracks from Todd Dockstader, Delia Derbyshire, Throbbing Gristle and others.

First project to get a physical release since L-event (October 2013). This should look neat on the shelf next to the EPs box set.

They're hella smart. Which doesn't always translate into being creatively talented, but they've scripted generative programs in C (or C++, whichever works with Max MSP), and are now generating all these tracks in real time from equations, markov chains and god knows what else.

I am a better listener than I used to be, so I've def gone back and I like some older stuff by them that I didn't used to. I still don't like Quaristice, really, EP7, L-event or the first two as whole releases, but almost everything else is so stunning to me. I also didn't really like the first NTS session as a whole but the second one is AMAZING. Not sure about the third one yet.

It's tempting, but I have to remember when I got caught up in the excitement of Trent putting out all those remastered albums, an ep, and the Fragile extras all at once. I spent $300 on vinyl, and then realized: I have no record player. What am I going to do, hang on to these until they're worth more, then eBay them? Look at the liner notes? Go buy a record player? Fortunately when they all got delayed I took the option to get a refund. I love the art, and all that, but I just can't justify wasting resources of my own on anachronistic fetish items like super awesome CD/Vinyl box sets anymore. They're not going to get any use from me, and what I truly care about is the music.

I've been listening to the NTS sessions on repeat though, and gladly handed over the money for the downloads. I can't believe these fucking guys are putting out eight hour albums, and it's all awesome.

It's essentially Quaristice, if it hadn't been edited way down. The NTS Sessions have the "movement" temperament of AE_LIVE and elseq 1-5, while still going down every "alternate" route they could. They started really exploring this free form style during Quaristice, though.

Yeah this kind of explains it for me. Quaristice is one of my least favorite AE records. It's an amazing technical feat to be able to jam the way they do with electronic instruments (especially in 2008) but it doesn't work for me without editing, and even with editing is seems less engaging. I might just like the sound design on elseq better, because I'm sure that's the same thing. But also much shorter and in smaller releases.

It's odd cause as far as I know Confield is partially generative. I don't get why it has such a different quality to it. It almost sounds sequenced. Doesn't come across as jammy.

The "popular" opinion is that elseq stands for Edited Live Sequence(s). The "live" more than likely refers to them being "live in the studio", jamming, however you'd prefer to word it. I like Quaristice/Versions/Quadrange, but I agree, elseq 1-5 is miles ahead.

I personally like this Autechre that feels like it has no boundaries.

I really liked most of NTS 1-3. NTS4 has one incredibly brilliant track on it, column thirteen, a couple other okay tracks, and the rest is completely disposable to me (especially the hour long thing). I've been listening to a ton of ambient Brian Eno, Gas, and NASA Voyager Recordings lately, and almost none of this comes anywhere close. It is, by far, the weakest of the four sessions.

I also plan to make a playlist of the absolute best from each session. I wish it was all on Spotify for this reason, but it'll still be fun to have only my very favorite tracks.

Funnily enough, NTS 4 is the one getting the most playtime from me! The first track is almost a continuation of 3, and then the remaining tracks all feel like an extended epilogue to me. I'm not sure what it is that grabs me so much, but I keep coming back to this comparison in my head of the last 30 minutes of the movie Annihilation. This sounds like that sounded, and it's freakish and alien and beautiful and uncanny to me.

But I completely get how some people may not dig it. I'm still having trouble getting into any of the elseq releases, myself.

"all end" is the full, extended outro for "bladelores" from Exai. I'm still trying to find a good place to splice them together.

Double post because everyone should be talking about Autechre...

It's odd cause as far as I know Confield is partially generative. I don't get why it has such a different quality to it. It almost sounds sequenced. Doesn't come across as jammy.

I didn't realize they had compiled all of this on the wiki page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confield):

Like EP7 before it and their 2003 release Draft 7.30 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft_7.30), Booth and Brown make use of generative sequences (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generative_music) on Confield. However, in an interview following the release of Draft 7:30, Booth explained that although the beats they create using generative sequences may seem completely random to some, he and Brown exercised tight control over the limits and rules of what the beats could do.

"[On Confield] you have something that some people would call random, but I would say is quantifiable," Booth said.

"It seems that for a lot of people, if they hear something that doesn't sound regular, they assume it's random. If live musicians were playing it, they'd probably call it jazz or something. But the fact that it's coming out of a computer, as they perceive it, somehow seems to make it different. For me it's just messing around with a lot of analogue sequencers and drum machines. It's like saying, 'I want this to go from this beat to that beat over this amount of time, with this curve, which is shaped according to this equation."

I'm surprised with the mixed reactions across the different sessions of NTS, but I've come to realize I'm a much bigger fanboy than I originally thought.

For me, it's not that Brian Eno, or such-and-such, do a style of music better; it's that Autechre are willing to dip into anything electronic (like every great electronic "pioneer" before them). And, they seem more and more willing to shift or all together remove their boundaries: constant evolution.

I started digging into the 24bit download versions of the NTS Sessions this week. Can't wait to have the physical versions, now!

I don't know why, but I really kind of skimmed over Elseq when it came out. It just didn't grab me, and I think it was mostly because the abridged album they put on the streaming services. Lately I've been digging into all the other downloaded parts of that album. Motherfucker! How the hell did I pass this up like that?! I found myself making the Elseq playlist before the NTS sessions playlist. When I crank it up on studio monitors + subwoofer... man, SO GOOD.

Sorry to bump this with no new information or opinions, but i had a question regarding a music video of theirs, which if memory serves correctly, was fan made. I could be wrong about that though...

I don't remember the title or era, and fuzzy on the actual video itself, but it was really crisp digital animation of like, metal... rods (?) or something like silvery pins popping in and out perfectly to the insane beat of the track. Does this sound familiar to anybody? I could have sworn I discovered it from ETS, but after going through this thread I'm thinking maybe it was posted on the old board. I've searched and searched YouTube, to no avail. Does this ring a bell to anyone? Someone was asking me about them and wanted a good intro track and I remembered the video as it was very accessible for someone unfamiliar with their music... not to mention visually stunning... and tried finding it, with no luck.

Does anyone recall my vague (sorry) description of said video?

If this is the one you mean, it is indeed an official video directed by Alex Rutterford (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Rutterford). I have it on a CD+DVD set, the YouTube compression doesn't really do it justice, but take a look at the highest resolution your bandwidth can handle:

It's an absolutely landmark work in the field of motion graphics direction. Hard to believe that it's 16 years old now! Four minutes of utter glory.

Ah, that feeling when you're listening to some Autechre and the song ends and you don't notice for a bit because you think the ambient mechanical noise happening from some construction nearby is part of the song.

Finally got around to starting on NTS Sessions today and I've found it to be quite enjoyable so far. As always, I'm never quite sure if I'm having my leg pulled or not, but there's definitely some awesome stuff in there. This one'll take awhile to sink in, though I suppose that's a bit of a redundant statement given the length.

$50 for 28 hours of top-quality music is an insane bargain... having this makes me only slightly less sad to have missed the Toronto show! It sounds incredible.

They're all on streaming sites, too, so you can just put them all on a playlist and loop it... everywhere. I recommend you do that, in fact.

This whole past weekend saw NTS helping Warp Records celebrate their 30th anniversary. Autechre did a two parter, 89-93, and it looks like they made their sets available for FREE through their Bleepstore. If you scroll all of the way to the bottom, you will find this link to a WAV copy...

I'm always down for a new Autechre album. Sonically, they've always sounded great and although a bit of a deviation from what I traditionally listen to, i can certainly appreciate their sounds and texture.
Also, their album atheistic/design are straight up my alley. I love the minimalistic/modern direction they always have going on.

That’s it as far as I know. Would’ve been good to get 1991-2002 in 24 bit as well but that maxed at 16.

Also, quaristice, quadrange, oversteps, and elseq had track by track artwork. The pre-elseq albums these were lost along the way, but someone on r/autechre recreated them as png’s.

I have the original embedded artwork that was present with the Warp/Bleep MP3 distributions. The Quaristice (not Quadrange) ones were the hardest to find; I literally went down the list on SoulSeek and downloaded copies until I found one with the artwork.

Actually... no. Though it was actually a good guess based off my vague description. The video I mentioned was apparently taken down by the creator for what ever reason, but he recently re-uploaded it in 4k, and its absolutely bonkers. The amount of detail put into this blows my mind... check it

Around 52 hours, counting the live releases + Japanese bonus tracks.

I burned a copy of the 16-bit version of PLUS, and listened on the way to the ENT this morning. These last two releases have been great!
