I've searched and searched, but could not find a thread about the art of standing in front of a bunch of people and telling jokes. So here goes...

I bloody love Louis CK (doesn't everyone?) and particularly his stand up shows over his TV show (still good though).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzbURUrgQao

The first comedian I fell in love with was Eddie Izzard, and still love his early stuff, up to Dress to Kill. Lately I've been all about Stewart Lee, Richard Herring, Kevin Eldon, Doug Stanhope
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoBYYElyP4c

I'm really into this trend lately of comedians putting out their own specials for $5 (thanks again Louie..) and have picked up Aziz Ansari and Rob Delany's downloads. Are there any more? I like both UK and US people, as long as they are.. well.. good! Share your comedy with me! (and everyone else)

^^I keep meaning to check out one of Bill's specials in their entirety. I really need to. I've seen bits and pieces of his act.

This one is really funny in particular:

Also, Louis is the best comedian alive. Period.

My absolute favorite Louis bit ever:

And finally, you can't mention standup without the awesome Patton Oswalt.

So I just saw "Maria Bamford: The Special Special Special" and now I love her more than ever. It's dark as hell, reminds at times of Lynch's absurdist/surreal humor and it's all taped in her home with her parents as the only guests. This woman is a genius.

Just got back from seeing Louis C.K. 5th row. It was pretty awesome. No opener, which was kind of weird, but no big deal. He did somewhere in the neighborhood of an hour and 20 minutes. Very funny. To say that he broached some taboo topics would be an understatement. I think it's safe to say he pushed the envelope in this special more than any he's done before.

Speaking of which, yeah, they were filming tonight's show for his HBO special in April. Well, all this weekend's shows. It was kind of cool. There was a camera guy just to the right of me and a camera on a crane just above and to the left of me. It'll be really interesting to watch the special and see how it looks on TV having been there. That's going to be strange.

But yeah. This is going to be a fantastic special. It wasn't my favorite hour of his, but it was pretty great. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that less than two hours ago Louis C.K. was standing 15 feet in front of me. :D Now as long as I get a chance to see Patton Oswalt at some point I can die happy.

Resurrecting this thread because there will be a Holy Grail of George Carlin Material coming out soon. Something I never thought would ever happen.

A George Carlin album will be released on Sept. 16, marking the first debut of the late comedian’s material since his death in 2008. The album includes never-before-heard routines, a rare 1957 home recording by Carlin and other original versions of the comedian’s ever-biting jokes (https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2016/08/new-george-carlin-album-debuts-sept-16.html).

I like some of Bill Burr's stuff but am not an overall fan of his point of view, which I'll chalk up to liberal guilt. I did enjoy him on Breaking Bad, and would like to see him do more dramatic stuff.

For me, nobody measures up to Carlin. Hicks came close, but of course his life was cut too short before he could have hit a real peak.

Going back to Carlin, when I read the comments Clint Eastwood made recently about what he sees as oversensitivity in today's culture, I thought George said it better, or rather predicted it.

It's one thing to laugh but not agree, but to laugh, not agree but consider the argument in a way you might not have expected. To me, Burr is not up to snuff in this regard.

Bill Burr treads that line between the bro white guy comedy crowd and more forward thinking circles. Not necessarily in the content, but in the audience he's cultivated. By buddying up with the O&A crowd over the years, that shitty bro contigent is a big part of his audience. He's def. a more liberal guy though, as you can tell from his act and from his personal life.

Is there any real controversy with Amy Schumer and her new special? Do real people actually not like her anymore, or just shitheads trolling her online? I'm a fan, but she IS getting kind of annoying and I could see her new stuff not being funny. I found the HBO special lacking as all she did was jokes about fucking for an hour. It got old.

I found the HBO special lacking as all she did was jokes about fucking for an hour. It got old.Isn't that the biggest complaint from the "shitheads trolling her online"? I've never watched any of her standup so I don't have a real opinion on her, but from what I've read her whole shtick is just "my vagina" comedy. I understand men do a lot of comedy about their penises, but the important part is to be funny while doing it. Again, I can't say subjectively whether she is funny or not while doing it, that's just what I've heard.

I watched about half of her new special. I can't remember ever seeing anything from her before, but it was definitely funny, and touched on a ton of relevant social issues.

The point she made about how a man will never cum in your mouth and then get nervous about it tasting okay... Fucking fantastic. Women are taught to be ashamed of their bodies and sexuality from the time they are children.

I think a lot of the hatred of her centers around just being a woman talking about her body and sex in a manner that men are uncomfortable with. It seems reminiscent of the stance that many have with naked pictures. They will clamor to stare at naked photos that have been hacked and stolen from women, but if a woman releases them on her own, they hurl insults at her. Women are only meant to be sexual beings when they deem it to be so, and if she does that on her own, she's awful.

Or, perhaps the talk of her body is just something a lot of men have a hard time relating to? idk. But I want to watch the second half!

The Chappelle ones mixed moments of absolute brilliance with moments of absolute trash. Kind of a tossup for me, which is disappointing!

i LOVE amy. to a fault, even. her cc show, her book, trainwreck ... just brilliant. the problem with her new special is *nothing* was new. anyone who's caught her on ellen (toned down, of course) and elsewhere knows the bulk of this material and has for a while now. great stuff ... the first time.

i still enjoyed it, but nothing was gut-busting thanks to the deja vu.

I couldn't be further from the alt rignt and I hated Amy's new hour. I kept waiting for it to pull through and it just never got an honest laugh out of me. Her show had a lot of great skits and I've enjoyed her on a lot of podcasts as well as in Trainwreck but her actual stand up almost never connects for me, and The Leather Special was just downright uncomfortable from how unfunny I found it. The idea that everyone who disliked it has to be some rampant manchild misogynist on Breitbart and 4chan is absurd.

I adored Chappelle's new hours -- Age of Spin had the most thoughtful and interesting stories to it and Austin had the strongest jokes. The man's still got it and deserves his place as a legend of the craft.

I also recently watched and liked Katherine Ryan's newest hour on Netflix. In general they're killing it with getting everybody and anybody to do an hour with them -- just this year they've gotten stuff from people like Burr, Schumer, Norton, Burbiglia, Chappelle, and they've got deals with Seinfeld and CK now, too; it's insane. They're covering all the bases. It feels like every week they have a new one out and it's hard to keep up, which is an amazing problem to be having. I just want a new Maria Bamford hour sometime soon -- she's in my top 5 of all time and there's honestly no one else like her around.

The above Cavett appearance shows his comedy and some serious discussion occasionally too. A truly great man. My wife & I were lucky enough to see him a few years ago in Long Island. If you haven't seen the brand new Louis CK stand-up special (simply titled "2017"), it's on Netflix and it is fantastic (as is to be expected from Louie, who is without doubt, my favorite comedian). If you were lucky enough to catch him on his latest tour like I did back in August of 2016, it's pretty much the same material, though I felt he'd refined/polished it up a bit and I still laughed my ass off until I was nearly crying. Highly recommended! I'm a big Dave Chappelle fan too, but his new specials were a little more hit and miss to me. Killin' Them Softly was his best, in my opinion.

Louie's new abortion bit was one of the funniest I've ever seen on the subject and managed to really confidently walk the line between offending both sides while still remaining consistent in its own absurd way. The Christian calendar bit, the Magic Mike and wanting a boyfriend bit, the Elizabethean parlor game bit -- all so good. The man just doesn't seem to have a bad special in him.

I think I overall preferred Age of Spin to the Texas special when it comes to Chappelle, but I thoroughly loved both. Spin was more "thoughtful" and challenging material while Texas was more just outrageous joke after joke and reminded me more of his earlier specials. I'm very excited for whatever his third is gonna be.

Anyway... Norm MacDonald has a new Netflix special! I'm not sure how I missed this, but it's gonna be the next thing I do after posting this. Dude is a fucking genius. I'm not sure why I never considered him one of my all time favorites. Probably just lack of exposure. But every time I listen to any of his stuff, he cracks me the fuck up. It's just this weird blend of apathy and anti-humor and never knowing which direction he's gonna take anything. Just his entire demeanor is goddamn hilarious. Nobody does it like him.

They're not on YouTube, but you gotta watch him on the Comedy Central Roast of Bob Saget (https://streamable.com/yg6ut) and this spot on the Daily Show in '96 (http://www.cc.com/video-clips/beopn8/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart-norm-macdonald). Unreal.

Burr’s podcast is a dream. One of the greatest living comedians (possibly ever) releasing 2 hours of new content every week that is often just as good as his actual act and often the origins of a lot of his material. He’s such a naturally funny, silly person that he can ramble about anything and kill me. I know nothing about sports but I still listen to him complain about it. I skip ads on every podcast but I always listen to his because they’re so hilarious and weird. Ring Video Doorbell is hysterical. Him losing a sponsor for making a joke about the leader of the KKK using their product was incredible.

What’d everyone think of the new Chappelle specials?

The first one felt more like a sit down interview/confession. The 2nd was golden. I’m waiting for Chris Rock’s special.

In reference to Burr’s advertising, all I have to say is Zip:

It was kind of purposely 'terrible.' Weinbach is very into the absurd type of humor. It's definitely an acquired taste but it's a league apart from hacks who just happen to be terrible.

I'm not sure if I could convince you that Stanhope is good if you already don't like him. His type of humor is pretty up-front. I listen to him less lately as I've gotten far more into the aforementioned absurd humor and less into the anti-establishment guys-making-a-statement type of humor, but here are a few of my favorite bits.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsPDT5qHtZ4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq1tSvYP5GU

And for context, I'm the furthest from any sort of alt-right personality. I'm very liberal and I hate that shit. It's easy to lump Stanhope in with that crowd or the Bill Burr types (meh) at first glance but I wouldn't place him in there at all. He's raunchy and shits on certain groups, but I've never gleaned any hateful vibes from him or any of that nonsense.

I also hate religion, hate breeding, love drugs, etc.

I'll use this opportunity to plug another one of my favorite comedians, a lesser known dude who needs way more attention. This guy slays me every time. Not all good stand-up hits you with real laugh-out-loud moments, but Nate Bargatze knows just right where to get me.

Bill Burr has to be my favourite comedian nowadays. His specials always murder. I saw him last year in Toronto and he was hilarious as usual. Paul Virzi opened for him and he was hilarious too, very solid act. Also, Burr’s podcast is the shit, I listen to it religiously and it’s always fun, especially when Nia is on the podcast and they break each other’s balls. He has mellowed a bit, but on the latest podcast (April 19, 2018) he mentioned to comedian Bret Ernst how the current PC environment is fueling some material that is more outrageous. Looking forward to checking that out.

The Chapelle specials on Netflix are incredible, really well crafted.

I never got Louis CK. I watched 2 of his specials and I found his humour very juvenile, junior-high level funny. All the sex and kids bits seem like he is trying too hard to be irreverent. I find him extremely overrated as a comedian.

I find Joe Rogan not so funny too. His latest special (Triggered, I think) wasn’t that bad, but it just didn’t do it for me. He preaches too much, like a guy who had a good introspective trip on acid and feels like he has to tell everyone THE TRUTH and guide the herd. His podcast is great though, lots of cool guests and interesting conversations. I particularly liked the one with Shirley Manson, she’s funny and cool as shit; but it is when he has fellow comedians as guests on his podcast when I find that Rogan is unfunny.

Or maybe she just isn’t funny to some.

I watched the leather special and I found it a huge waste of time, some funny bits, but nothing worth some true laughter. More than the material itself, I think it’s her delivery that I find lame.

Iliza Schlesinger's "Elder Millennial" Netflix special is a killer.

I have to agree to this. I started watching it yesterday, I might finish it today.

Her impressions are really good, and i love her aproach about women’s behaviour around men. I wonder if a man could get away with the same level of honesty.

Nevertheless, I’ll be paying attention to her material.

I also really enjoyed the Sarah Silverman (is that her name?) special A Speck of Dust, she is hilarious.

I wasn’t very impressed with Ali Wong’s specials on Netflix (Baby Cobra i think, and something else)... the whole sexual thing has never been my cup of tea. Anyone can make jokes about eating buttholes, it’s (very) low-hanging fruit and boring, at the same level of Louis CK talking about masturbating a rat... humour for 9th graders.

He's also waaayyyyy too hung up on any criticism he gets, and keeps talking about it. Stop bitching and just do your material if you feel it's strong that it shouldn't be criticized.

Can you blame him? It must suck to be a comedian right now because it seems like not one comic can do a set now without worrying in the back of their mind if it's going to be their last because one person got offended by a joke that 99% of the audience laughed at, and because of that the offended person decides to go on a crusade to ruin that comedian's career.

People act like comedians are politicians trying to pass policies that will greatly affect their lives when in reality all they are attempting to do is make us laugh. When you go to a comedy show, you are choosing for those 90 minutes to live inside that comedian's head. It's not reality. It's not truth. It doesn't affect you one iota. All it is is, or at least it's supposed to be, an escape from reality. And you know what, if you don't agree with that person's perception? You leave or you change the channel. Simple as that. Comics are not malicious people. Most of them really just hate themselves, but at the end of the day, look at their profession. They are COMEDIANS. They are here to try to entertain and make us laugh.

And to put it plainly, comedy with rules/boundaries is not comedy. That's just my personal opinion.

Inappropriate being a subjective term. Maybe I should've added some additional context. The reason I posted that is more a comment about Toronto specifically. Schulz is a pretty non-controversial figure and this move echoes the risk averse, creativity stifling nature of this city. As much as I love living here, the place often shows that it has no guts. Examples of this include any changes enacted being dubbed "pilot projects" because they are afraid of people being upset (bike lanes, no car traffic on King Street). Public art projects being driven by some odd agenda where a number of them have a requirement to explicitly feature specific themes such as multiculturalism. It isn't enough that the artist by their own existence is multicultural. No creative foresight into public projects, instead it is the old "Hey let's try this thing NYC did 10 years ago". I get that I'm making a comparison between municipal decisions and a private business but to me it's another example of the lame fog that often hangs over this town.

I didn't think I'd like his stand up, because the onstage segments from the TV show never elicited a laugh from me. Also, my brother got to see his act a couple of times at work (doing lighting or sound or something) and HE didn't like it.

Check out 23 Hours To Kill. I think thats his most recent one. Most of the stuff I saw him do live made it in there.

I found him on Facebook sometime late last year or early this year and I'd love to see him if he ever comes to the Twin Cities!

I am seeing Arcuri on Monday at the Cellar in the city along with Andrew Schulz. Quite the bill for a small club...but that's the Cellar for ya.
