Yes the new "costume" looks awful...
Yes Peter Weller is better than Joel Kinnaman...

Still i'll give it the benefit of doubt, i think you shouldn't make remakes of perfect movies like the original, but you can understand why they are making it and im hoping at least a watchable movie like the remakes of Judge Dreed, Dawn of the Dead or Planet of the Apes...

As much as I hate the look of the suit and all the shit I've heard about problems during the production, I imagine I'll end up going to see this when it comes out. I love the original 2 movies (fuck Robocop 3) so I'll at least give this one a chance.

Shhhh... they can hear you!

Anyhoo... I agree with kdcraig, Part 3 was awful, part 2 is not a great movie but it had good moments and i still can't get out of my head the scene when the bad guys disassemble Robocop!

As i said remaking the movie isn't the greatest idea ever but neither is doing a sequel or an animated feature... i want this movie to remain true to the original i want it to be dark, intelligent, critical and violent... i don't want to see a "Robo-dog" or Robocop with a "girlfriend", i want blood, pain and drama just like in the first movie!

I feel like it's going down the Total Recall route... There is actually a lot of potential in the story, it could be made very relevant now (factory workers are already losing their jobs to robots... ) and the technology could really turn it up a notch. Unfortunately it will most likely end up being an uninspired and boring retelling of the original.

What I took away from that:
"The suit won't suck, it'll have some blinky CGI lights! Look! We've... we're bringing back the Ford Taurus!! Oh shit, who's taking the fall for this NOT IT!"

I really want this movie to be good. But, come to think of it, I haven't watched a remake in maybe ever that I thought was good.

I take that back. New Star Trek was good.

I hope not, as you said: there's lots of potential in this movie and i would hate watch it go to waste because a poor script...
What it caught my attention is the fact that a lot of people are unhappy with this remake, that means that the first movie is undoubtedly a classic of our era... and to think Paul Verhoeven almost passed on the project

Anyway for the fans of the first movie i've found a cool "Man and Machine series" with cool facts and fiction about the first movies and the TV series:

I appreciate the original more than I like it. Both sequels never appealed to me at all, still don't. But now I liked how the original, on top of having some good action, feels like a Dirty Harry/Blade Runner meld. Parts of it are still too over the top for me to consider, though. That said I am interested in this reboot of the character. It's not the same story at all (he was injured on the line of duty now, as opposed to killed), and is actually relevant to some issues now (drone technology is a main point of the plot). But I'm not too convinced now that Sony has pushed it back to 2014, and on Valentine's Day no less.

Personally, I consider RoboCop to be one of the greatest movies ever made.

100% SERIOUS.

Still looking forward to the remake, though.

The director's Elite Squad movies are AWESOME. Kinnaman is in intense young and relatively unknown talent. The supporting cast is excellent. I pretty much LOVE what I've seen of the script and the concept designs so far. And even the lead character design I can get with considering what little we've seen of it and the transitions it's known to go through within the film and the potential for post-production enhancement and especially the sleeker, less cumbersome direction technology's taken since the days of the original film. I generally think of the re-design as essentially being RoboCop for the iPod generation.

And then there's the matter of the drones, defense contracting, detroit, economic depression, outsourcing, and Pat Novak the reporter, etc., etc., etc.

Maaaaan. For a movie that has EVERY RIGHT to be another PoS remake of a movie that's FUCKING PERFECT AS IS it really seems like THIS remake is doing a LOT of things right. Of course I'm fully aware that there's plenty of stuff to make purists balk on the face of it (Murphy's still alive? Human right hand? Black male Lewis?), I'm still more than willing to give this movie the benefit of the doubt. Despite whatever initial misgivings people might have we haven't even seen a trailer yet, ffs. This movie and these filmmakers DESERVE our faith so far.

CANNOT FUCKING WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE.

Also, Peter Weller KICKS FUCKING ASS.

I agree with you: Robocop is one of the greatest movies ever!!! that's what makes this remake so controversial...

As i said before, i'll give it a shot im not expecting nothing better than the original but i did like "Elite Squad" and i think the director has talent and can deliver at least a watchable movie, we'll just have to wait and see...

To me the biggest turn off for now is the suit; it seems that every bad-ass in every H'wood movie in the last couple of years has a similar one. I shit you not, the moment I saw it I thought "Batman!" due to those biceps armor, sixpack armor. shoulders armor.. To me it looks like all latest superheroes suits are made of same design and trying to look very similar and I really do not like this. They'd get my attention if the suit was actually something.. original but knowing it's a remake of a classic movie, what the hell did I expect?

I don't share Hazekiah's opinion of the original (I respect it more than I like it, odd as it may sound), but for every reason he stated and more, I'm a little interested in this remake too. It's not encouraging that Sony chose to push it back to fucking Valentine's Day 2014 but I'm still holding hope it won't be a waste of time in the theater.

Organic right hand = confirmed.

Not quite "dead" Murphy = confirmed.

Desert model ED-209 = cool.

Robocop '87 retro-design = AWESOME.

Still 100% on board with this remake even though I'd rather see him in his '87 design the whole way through based solely on the concept art and initial images. Everything else about this gives me COMPLETE faith they'll ultimately win me over anyway though, so FUCK IT, bring on the $100 MILLION remake!

Go, Robo!!!

Man, that article is in desperate need of some proofreading. And kicking it off with an image that was officially debunked as fan art forever ago isn't really doing the movie any favors...but it's still nice to see people willing to give this movie a chance. It definitely has a lot of great stuff going for it!

What is that?? The Guyver?

More like Snake Eyes and Iron man.

I was thinking more along the lines of a cross between stuff from Tron: Legacy and the Total Recall remake, but all of those are great sources to draw from design-wise so it's all good.

Which reminds me of something that caught my eye from that article:

After seeing how people are reacting about the Evil Dead remake and the Carrie remake it’s quite confusing to me to see that they’re giving them a chance but not to this one.

Not confusing at all.

People are excited about those movies because they're judging them from their official trailers instead of leaping to conclusions about random stalkerazzi pix bereft of any real context or finishing touches.

Sony's next big sci-fi/action flick is Elysium, so I'm expecting/hoping to see a RoboCop trailer attached to that.

Also, incidentally, I got a chance to hang out with a pal who was homesitting for some pals of ours recently and I couldn't help but notice they had a BIGASS flatscreen TV (something like 6 ft. wide) and a Blu-Ray player, so I immediately suggested we take a detour to Best Buy so I could buy a Blu-Ray disc to watch since the homeowners were superhippies and we didn't really feel like watching their 5,000 disc set of Furthur Festival crap on their ONE shelf of movies.

The only Blu-Ray stuff I owned at the time was Transformers: Dark of the Moon and a sampler for Beside You in Time, but those were two hours away and Best Buy was just a few minutes away so Best Buy it was.

My pal's a Manson fan, too...so I was originally gonna buy Live in L.A., but they were all sold out there. Then we noticed the stand for Django Unchained, but it was just a display for pre-orders since it wasn't really out yet. So we browsed a bit and then I saw RoboCop on Blu-Ray.

Fucking SOLD!

They had a 3-pack of all three RoboCop films on Blu-Ray, but it was almost fifty bucks and yeahhhh, I don't think so. And they had RoboCop on Blu-Ray with a bunch of special features, but I still don't own a player so I picked up the DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack instead so I could still have a copy to play until I finally have a Blu-Ray player.

Which only has one special feature on each, and it's just the janky old trailer on both. Meh.

Anyway, here's the point.

According to the back of the box, both the DVD and Blu-Ray discs were labeled as the Rated R cut. Not ideal, but it's all good. Lo and behold, while the DVD is indeed the Rated R version, the Blu-Ray was actually the Unrated version! Fucking WIN!!!

So you can probably get a DVD/Blu-Ray combo of both edits for the low, low price of $13.95 at your local Best Buy if you're interested.

And the Blu-Ray transfer seemed really good, btw. I know an '80s movie is hardly an ideal demo for Blu-Ray/HD, but it was noticeably sharper than the DVD on the same set-up. It was like I could see each and every single bit of film grain clear as day, lol...but in a good way.

;)

Interesting, i already own the trilogy on DVD and it has a couple of documentaries (very short one) a TV spot, couple of cut scenes not much, the DVD quality is ok but still feels like a transfered VHS, still i have no complains with my copy but i would buy a Blu Ray copy just for the unrated version, i've been buying again many of my old favorite DVD's on Blu Ray anyway...

Faster'n walking? Which raises the question, will he be "Fast" Robocop, like modern fast zombies, or is he going to clump around like Weller's?

Actually, it's probably because the best leaked shots come from exterior sets, like when the first Iron Man came out and all the shots from the set were outdoors...

Yup, i think we have seen the exterior shots mostly (Car chases, moving towards a location) but we haven't seen any of the studio or bluescreen shots...

On topic: Last night i saw "Dredd" (the one from 2012, not the Sylvester Stallone one...) and thought, i would love an approach like this for the Robocop movie: the acting, characters, effects and music were great! If the Robocop movie has this kind of treatment it would rock!

The visor? Not sure what you're getting at there.

But the purpose of the RoboCop concept is essentially the same as it was in the original film. There are problems with the ED-209 concept so they give something else a go. But this film expands on that by tying it into the legalities of using drones domesitically and the whole "illusion of free will" thing. Pretty neat angles for the story, really.

Seems more realistic that he'd still be alive. They never explained in the original how Murphy's head isn't rotting off.

They kinda did. As soon as he removes his helmet it's pretty clear that Murphy's head is basically robotic with his facial skin grafted onto its front. The idea was that it was necessary for the sake of retaining the sanity of the subject by allowing it to recognize itself in its own reflection. But the point here is that it wasn't actually his "head," just his face. As long as he kept it reasonably protected and kept eating his baby food it would be fine.

I agree, i always thought that Murphy doesn't even have a head and it's just skin all over a metal skull... still, his brain does need to "feed", that's the whole purpose of the baby food...

As for the visor and the whole "prosthetics" i do find them very forced, the main appeal to me of Robocop is that he was "built" from scratch, using just a human brain...
I hate this "Semi-RoboCop", yet i'll have to watch the thing to make a better judgment... right now the only thing in this movie, im looking forward to watch is Michael Keaton (It seems he'll be a great corporate bad guy)

I agree, i always thought that Murphy doesn't even have a head and it's just skin all over a metal skull... still, his brain does need to "feed", that's the whole purpose of the baby food...

Well, yeah...I wasn't trying to suggest that there wasn't a brain in there or that the baby food was SOLELY meant to support his face, obviously. I was just explaining why his head wasn't rotting off its shoulders.

right now the only thing in this movie, im looking forward to watch is Michael Keaton (It seems he'll be a great corporate bad guy)

Yeah, I'm really excited to see Keaton in a cool movie again. Off the top of my head the last thing I can even remember him in was Jackie Brown, ffs. Would've been awesome to see Hugh Laurie instead but I'm more than pleased with the re-casting for now.

And KUDOS to whoever gave him the line about making RoboCop more tactical and black in appearance, lol. This RoboCop redesign seems like a more sleek, smartphone-influenced spin on the original, clunky design and Keaton's character is supposed to be sort of a Steve Jobs style visionary rather than a traditional, full-on villian. All of which comes across pretty well in the trailer, I think.

But, yeah.

The character modeled after the white-iPhone guy but played by the actor who first donned a more modern, all black and rubber Batman suit suggesting the idea of modernizing RoboCop's look by making it black??? Hahaha, that's good stuff.

;)

After seeing the trailer, I am pretty pumped for the movie. I still don't dig the all black suit, but we will see how it plays out in the film. But I swear, if Sam Jackson doesn't tell some bitches to leave, this movie will be a huge waste of time.

Spoilerific update!

Someone attended a test screening recently and posted a pretty thorough synopsis of the film (http://makingstarwars.net/2013/09/movie-review-robocop-2014/), start-to-finish.

It's an early cut of an unfinished film so it obviously needed some polishing, but it's a mostly positive and reassuring review anyway. They had a few things to say about a couple parts they felt don't necessarily work but the overall tone is that of a very satisfied fan!

Awesome poster!

Didn't realize it would be in IMAX, too. Definitely doing the IMAX/3D thing at the midnight premiere.

Kinda wish they would've chosen a different catchphrase to reference, though. Glad they cut off the "creep" part, at least...it always sounded kinda lame.

So it's out in the U.S. today!

Really bummed I couldn't catch a midnight screening but I'm still gonna see it in 3D/IMAX and D-Box seating so it's all good.

I just came back from seeing this. It surpassed my expectations and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
At first I was a bit biased when I went in to see the remake because I grew up on the first two movies and thought it was sacrilege to remake such a perfect movie even with all of its flaws Robocop (original) set the standard on what movies should have.
At the time Robocop came out, in my opinion, it transcended the sci-fi movie genre just like Alien and Blade Runner.
It had humor, great acting, and many themes hidden and up front throughout the film, you could take years taking it apart and still has relevancy to this day.

Now the remake of robocop, when compared to the original, does lose some of its charisma.
They changed many things that at first didn't sit well with me but after looking at the big picture makes sense as to why they did it.
I dont necessarily agree with the changes but if was just a carbon copy then it would defeat the purpose of remaking it in the first place.
All in all it was a great action flick that might disappoint some of the purists.
The pg-13 rating doesn't really affect the movie whatsoever imo.

That scene involving the mirror was just brutal.

Edit: I saw this movie in imax and I really cant justify the price, save yourself the money and just see it in digital if you can.

That scene (both times it happened and you saw....that) was awesome. Otherwise? MEEEEEHHHHH....

If you want to reboot Robocop, go ahead... but PG-13? The original movie is a lot of things, but its most defining characteristic is the shockingly brutal violence. The extreme gore and mean spirit of the movie is essential.

According to Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0576987/), José Padilha (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0655683/) called to him during production to admit he was having "the worst experience of his life" and "for every ten ideas he has, nine are cut. "The film will be good, but I have never suffered so much and I do not want to do it again."

Director Jose Padilha and actor Joel Kinnaman fought hard for an R rating, but due to the ever expanding budget, which went from a modest $60 million budget and ballooned to a $120 million budget, studio executives were forced to deliver a PG-13 rating in hopes to recoup the budget they had spent on the film. Throughout the course of filming, studio executives kept a close eye on Padilha, making sure he was going to deliver a PG-13 rating.

That is the reason why it wasn't rated R. It sucks that the studio intervened an I hope they learn from this if they decide/able to do a sequel.

Not surprised by this: both of his "Elite Squad Movies" are heavy on the violence and both are rated "R".
Shame he got all those restrictions, he's an awesome director and i was very excited when i heard he was directing the remake, i hope he doesn't return to the sequel... seem s to me the new franchise will bomb just like the original when they decided to make the awful parts 2 and 3...

It makes me wonder what Aronofsky would have done if he was still attached to direct it. I'm sure it would have been much better.

Sounds interesting, but just like his "attempt" on directing Batman i think it was better on an "action" director, rather than someone like him (much more metaphorical and story-oriented), still i think it would have been very interesting to put a director like this to direct the drama and "human struggling" sequences, but i think Darren is so much better with projects that are it's own and getting 100% of control on them

I just got back from watching this.

I give it a 7/10. I am not counting this as cannon, but overall, a good flick.

I have a couple of gripes with the movie, the biggest being the fact that they changed Lewis's character into a male and suit issues, but that last one is just me wanting steel than an all 'tactical' look.

I think the movie works and definitely wasn't a "carbon copy" with no heart.

The cast worked great, the effects were top-notch and it had some great homages to the original one. The only thing i didn't like was the ending, excluding that i got no complains and i didn't feel insulted after leaving the movie theater...

Of course the "new" Robocop is more "machine than man", yet i think it's an interesting alternate take on an already existing character...

Well, this wasn't very good.
They got rid of the black humor, and the whole labor dispute angle.
Murphy remained far too human as Robocop, he wasn't a believable character. He wasn't sympathetic as a cop, or convincing as a robot.
The remake sanitized the original. Even Samuel L Jackson's character was way too heavy-handed.
Also, a male Lewis? Come the fuck on. Women in this movie were sidelined.
Far too much "action", and the ending was disappointing.
Abby Cornish is a great actress (and hot), but she spent the whole movie crying in a passive role, and the nuclear family theme grated.
Also that big screen setup was right out of Minority Report and Batman.
For such a stellar cast this was a letdown.
I did enjoy it, there were some great visuals (such as the factory in China scene, and the disembodied head stuff); the pacing was good, but then it all got a bit much; the music was overly loud and intrusive and the film never took a minute to breathe; it was trying too hard to cram everything in; not a film I would revisit.

The ending was weak that's for sure...
I mean there were so many ways they could have resolved the final scene with Keaton... can't shoot your creators? Ok, give the gun to my wife... hated the whole "raising barely my hand to shoot"

aggroculture

Yeah I didn't quite get what happened there, he overrode the system blocking him from shooting? Keaton wasn't even a villain until the last 10 mins of the film, it made no sense to have everything end like that.
Also, did he shoot the bad white cop behind his desk? In cold blood?

henryeatscereal
02-21-2014, 12:41 PM
and...

what was the purpose on keeping his human hand?, i understand it looks cool and works to show that human/robot dichotomy, yet in the movie and story-wise it does not make any sense, they threw away most of his body anyway, it's just a "weak point" people can shoot at... i guess that's why he was able to "override" the whole "priority system", yet that does not make any sense, why is shoulders and arms moved? those aren't "human" and he needs them to point at least higher...

I REALLY wish this was shot in Dallas. That was one of my favorite things about the old one.
I was born in amarillo in 1980, but lived in dallas from 1988-2012. You new yorkers and Los Angelites take seeing your city in tv shows and movies for granted.

But i'm looking forward to this nonetheless.
