I've only seen part of it, but I really enjoyed what I saw. Any chance it might get a physical release in the near future? I'm a sucker for any sort of behind-the-scenes stuff, so I'd probably pick it up on the spot.

Agreed. I also enjoyed this season so far. I'm definitely picking it up as soon as it comes out on DVD. (Like all the other seasons, and I enjoy listening to Trey Parker's and Matt Stone's commentaries anyway.)

I have such a love/hate with SP these days. Obviously I'm a fan (username & avatar,) but catching an old episode recently (the Planetarium one, aired in '98 I think) only reminded me how much it's changed. I don't think I made it through a full episode last season. The last one I really liked was the Facebook/Tron one from like 2 years ago. Guess I'm getting old. :\

That clip made me smile though. :) Surprised Barbrady wasn't the cop.

There've been a few decent ones in the latest run, but generally speaking I think South Park's quality took a major townturn around the time Team America came out. Back then I assumed they were just burnt out making the film, but it's continued since then. I've been surprised both times they've extended their South Park contracts, as it just seems like there isn't the passion and fun put into it that there used to be.

It's still watchable and enjoyable, in my opinion, just a bit sad when you look back on how peerlessly brilliant the show used to be. Another big issue in my opinion is that Matt and Trey's voices seem flatter and more limited - in early episodes, particularly, they could make characters hilarious just through the way they voiced them. They don't have that to fall back on anymore.

Zipfinator
03-12-2012, 06:05 PM
The show has really been that bad in your guys opinion even since Team America? I still quite enjoy nearly all of the episodes up to season 12. After that it does start to get a bit rocky for me but as Vertigo said I still enjoy watching it. There's still a few gems in the last few seasons in my opinion too like The Poor Kid, Pee, Medicinal Fried Chicken and Broadway Bro down. I would say part of why the show has declined a bit overall is because of their development schedule. They don't really have time to incubate ideas and think through the general plot and decide if the idea is worth an episode when they have to come up with the idea, write it, animate it, and voice it within a week.

As for the voice acting, I'm not sure that their voices are any more limited. It seems they just rely more on voice effects and using more voice actors than just them two and a microphone.

This has been the case for a very long time though - at least as long as I've been following the show closely, around 2003. I too have my doubts about whether it's the best way to develop the show, but Matt and Trey have always been adament that it's the only way they can be consistently productive.
I don't think the show's been bad since Team America, just taken a downturn. They have at least improved their hit rate since then - for a few years after Team America, there were several runs which just had one or two decent episodes; thankfully that's not the case anymore.

Remember being a fan on this show when it first started back in 1997. Finding it hilarious to see cartoon children swearing. Used to love 'The oh my god they killed Kenny' and Miss Crabtree.
Got bored in 1998 during second season and expected the show to sink. Started watching it around 2003 having completely forgotten about it, and it was like a completely different show, could not believe how daring and funny it was and how well written and cutting it had become.
Today I think it relies too much on Randy Marsh. He is funny. But I dont think he needs quite as much screen time.

I thought the show was at its peak around 2003-2004. Post 9/11 and during George W Bush's first term it seemed to have more anger and bile against the world to spew.
I remember it being one of the only shows to deal with Homosexual issues and rights in a direct way. Which I always respected it for. That period may not seem like that long ago but times change quickly. 2003 seems very different in t.v world to say... 5 years later in 2008.
The show is still brilliant. But like The Simpsons golden period was in the early to mid 90's. I think South Parks was exactly ten years later.

This was the first episode I've watched in a long, long time. Maybe years, I'm not sure. It was ok. Made me laugh a few times (what's his name saying "I'm a big boy" killed me) but some of it felt way too forced and on the nose (the name "sue-ance" had me rolling my eyes, having ghosts show up in the courtroom).

The new episode was fine and there was something there, although I think it quickly got old and their formula is definitely running very dry now. I agree a lot with Highly Psychological's post. I have been a big fan of the show since about 2001 and I think they're just to a point now where they've done so much and it's hard to stay fresh and original.. Hopefully they can do it and better episodes are to come in the season. Sometimes they have little slumps, actually I thought Humancentipad wasn't the greatest season opener, either, but I ended up enjoying a lot of the other episodes a lot more. Matt and Trey are very intelligent guys, in my opinion, and they usually make something that works for me.

Really? Man, I didn't laugh once the entire episode. I don't know, none of the jokes worked for me. Everything fell flat, and I honestly didn't get why they were parodying that situation. I get what they were DOING but I just didn't understand why. The Argo jokes were completely irrelevant too. If they wanted to do the whole Argo thing, why not make an entire episode about Affleck and Argo, you know?

I'm not sure I understand why that would be necessary at all. I thought it was a funny quick inclusion, and I figured it was there more as a way for Matt and Trey to take back how they bashed the shit out of Affleck in the past, since they thought his new movie was good. That's how I saw it anyway.

But yeah, I didn't think this episode was that great.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/28/business/media/south-park-creators-fortify-their-content-empire.html?_r=1&

You might think that after all they’ve accomplished, they would be ready to step back a bit, and this is essentially true. Don’t worry, they aren’t going to actually kill Kenny, who for years was done away with in every episode. But “South Park,” which generally has been produced in two batches of seven episodes for a total of 14 every year, will be cut back to a single run of 10 episodes, beginning on Sept. 25.

Reached by phone, Mr. Parker, a musician as well, said “South Park” ran like a rock band. “Now instead of putting out two albums a year, we are only going to do one, which is more manageable and ensures that it will be something we are proud of.”
Given the loyal and frantic fan base for “South Park,” the creators’ decision to cut back on the number of annual episodes would seem risky, except they have been right about a lot of things and have the artistic and financial independence to show for it.
“We want to keep ‘South Park’ going for a long time to come, and given what is going on in television, I don’t think it matters as much how many episodes you have,” Mr. Stone said.

Vertigo
02-09-2013, 07:16 AM
Argh. It already feels like forever since there was new South Park, and now there's another seven and a half months to go...
It'll be interesting to see if the new method really can improve the quality, I suspect it's more likely to lead to them getting burned out towards the end of the run. I've never been convinced that the one-week production cycle really is the best way to squeeze quality out of the show, either.

Piko
02-09-2013, 08:30 AM
The one-week cycle is pretty hit or miss these days. When it hits, it's great and vice versa. Judging from the commentaries, they usually got burned out towards the end of 7. Curious to see how this plays out. Kinda sucks that we're only getting 10 instead of 14 though. At the same time it's understandable though.

I don't know if they're still restricting themselves to a crunch 6 day work period for each episode, but if that's what they've been forcing themselves into, maybe they should move away from that and put some more time and thought into it.

I remember Trey Parker admitting that he felt that he performed a lot better under the stress of procrastination since he was in high school in an interview. I was a bit wary of that quote myself, considering how procrastination in general can screw things up and water down end results in the long run no matter what kind of task you're performing. And yes, I've also felt the same way about that too. It would have to be far better if they gave themselves more time to complete their episodes.

Did anybody else just find themselves checking out South Park Studios instead of tuning into Comedy Central? I actually find myself doing that these days.

http://www.southparkstudios.com/

I was actually hoping they'd do an episode like Let Go, Let Gov as it pokes fun on government spying and the conspiracies attached to it along with the very nature of the DMV. I'm even more surprised that they didn't do it any sooner. As a first episode for the season, it didn't seem like a bad start at all. And as for the jokes on the Jehovah's Witnesses, well, that's just South Park simply being good old South Park to me.

I liked how they also poked fun at the available shitty time-slots from cable company service on Informative Murder Porn. If I remembered correctly, that was 6:00 AM - 3:00 PM? And to think that they sometimes don't even show up afterwards. I also remember this being mentioned for just a little bit in Seinfeld too. And I've always wondered about the packages. It really would be nice if you can select for the channels you want, and only have them to pay for. But of course it's not that simple.

I also thought I'd see more scenes with Minecraft like they did with World of Warcraft on Make Love, Not Warcraft, but that still didn't ruin it for me so I was good. I like the way this run has been going so far and I also like any episode with Randy Marsh in it for reasons previously stated, and any episode where Cartman is actually helpful, despite being his regular old annoying self to the other characters. And the whole porn joke sort of reminded me of Creme Fraiche joke, but with murder instead of food. And my oh my, what a perfect ending. I actually thought that Randy would've attacked Sharon first.

I just had to see it after you said that. Almost everything goes wrong with the "And it was all a dream." angle. But then Cartman actually shot Token. :p And yeah, it was a bit of a downer to me too. I thought it would be one of those episodes I'd like to watch over and over again. I'll admit that I liked how they captured Cartman's delusions, arrogance, and narcissism though. (With him hearing everything in his voice while dreaming, in a dream, along with the typical black jokes from Cartman, but I could also see how that could be run into the ground just like the Jew jokes.)

And I really want the show to live... however, it would suck if all of them left me feeling like this. I actually liked the previous two episodes as well.

That's all crazy, yet I'm fascinated about such reactions because there's obviously a huge difference between "just being a fan" and "acting/looking a way you shouldn't", but those two things seem to get mixed up when it comes to principals and teachers. I'm glad some people liked it, but maybe this is part of what I hated so much about it... it just felt like they were tacking together whatever came to mind and forcing it to correlate to something else that's currently been on their minds. I feel like they're probably about to put out an episode that combines Miley Cyrus with a statement about the government shutdown and how that all relates to legalized gay marriage, the royal baby, gun control, and whatever that new drug is that is giving people necrosis... all the while tying it in with a statement about the overuse of 3D in movies, and a side note about how the movie Gravity is still pretty cool.

In the past, the stories were presented in a way that seemed to suggest they were making a legitimate correlation, or at least trying to. Now it feels as though they're just hoping it sticks in some vague way.

I suppose you can file this under controversial South Park opinions, but as of late, I'm starting to really like it when Cartman and Kyle actually get along. But for very obvious reasons, that only seems to happen when Cartman gets something out of it, or if all of them are in an equal amount of trouble, otherwise, he wouldn't care to be helpful at all.

That thought just occurred to me, and yes, I also would've loved to see that too. If it isn't Kyle, Token has also kicked his ass. (I'm just glad that they didn't actually kill Token off.)

The thing I don't like about recent South Park is that they've gone in the direction of having only one or two jokes and then just beating the hell out of them. The old South park used to have real stories that developed and had multiple funny situations along the way. Now they come up with a dead horse or two and continue to kick it until the 30 minutes is up.

Hell, they even made fun of this in the "Jared has Aides" episode.

The new episodes have some good moments. I loved the religious symbols turning into a Van Halen Logo. But they're few and far between these days and it seems like most of the show is filler.

I think what helped me is to not raise my expectations so high after realizing how much they procrastinate, and how long they haven't been working on South Park from November 7, 2012 - September 25, 2013. And after 16 years, they'd have to be extremely burnt out on the show, considering all the other endeavors they've pursued and endured. The Book of Mormon was probably like Team America: World Police all over again, but in a different way. It's probably why any sign of them being rusty hasn't been that much of a shock to me, but I definitely understand why it would still be a bummer.

Presuming the last season you watched was 14 (unless you didn't see the season finale Creme Fraiche, in which case, watch that first/now, it's the last episode of season 14), here's some recommendations:

Season 15: Episode 1: Human Centipad - It's the episode they were making while filming the documentary 6 days to air, so even if it sucked it'd be interesting. It's a great episode though, so win win.

Season 15: Episode 6: City Sushi - a weird one, but pretty awesome overall.

Season 15: Episode 7 and 8: You're Getting Old / Ass Burgers - My favorite two-parter ever, it actually makes a kind of sad point while riding a bitter/funny balance.

Season 15: Episode 11: Broadway Bro-Down - One of the best juvenile slapstick episodes

Season 16: Episode 1: Reverse Cowgirl - Just watch it it's awesome

Season 16: Episode 8: Raising the Bar - One of the recent social critiques that doesn't feel preachy and is actually funny

Also, the new Ginger Cow episode was pretty great. I'd say everything in between those is relatively hit or miss, but just avoid the "I Never Should Have Gone Ziplining" episode. It's awful.

Kenny turned into the anime princess of power.

Also, the Game of Thrones wiener song happened.

Don't forget Cartman also got carried through a door like a couch. Twice.

It just seems like they're padding it out unnecessarily to make it a 3 parter.

& I guess Part 3 isn't airing Wednesday, they're airing A History Channel Thanksgiving.

I'm actually wondering if there's going to be some sort of middle ground, or equal opportunity lambasting at the end the "PlayStation 4 versus XBox One" console wars. It really just sounds like something they'd do, so that's just a hunch I'm having for now. Oh yes, and just about any two or three part episodes of South Park were often a hit for me, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it. They've been among my favorite latest episodes for this season of now.

The Princess Kenny anime killed me. That was so funny. I was a bit disappointed towards the end but it was still a good episode to a solid trilogy. The best episodes of what has been a pretty bad season.

I like how they referenced Hershel from TWD and getting his head chopped off.

Halo Infinity

I suppose that I sort of knew that they wouldn't just let team XBox One simply obliterate team PlayStation 4 just like that. I also liked how they went all anime in it, for a couple minutes here and there. I also loved the "Garden of Betrayal" scenes, and what a way to promote The Stick of Truth at the end of the episode. :p

That was a good episode. Especially about the idea of transgender and transexuality. Wendy becoming Wendell was a big laugh for me yet it was Randy that stole the show. BTW, Butters is becoming a real dick now.

OK, that was really good. Randy finally standing up for artistic integrity in an era of lewd as hologram versions of Michael Jackson and 2Pac are roaming around the Earth. It's also a very good commentary on the state of how technology ruins things and how people don't spend actual time on living rooms together. I really hope Cartman gets his comeuppance.
