The only thing I didn't like about the box set was how they changed the songs to finish a side of a record. Green Man did not fade out originally.

I've been on a big Type O kick myself lately... it might been a fall / Halloween seasonal thing. I saw them maybe 4-5 times in concert, made me sad to think that these songs will probably never be played live again. Two of the guys were in a new band, no? Never got around to checking that out... any news lately on them?

The original drummer, Sal Abruscato, formed A Pale Horse Named Death, and they just released their second album Lay My Soul To Waste which is AMAZING. Kenny formed Seventh Void but hasn't done much more with that apart from release one record called Heaven Is Gone.

APHND is currently on tour with Danzig. Essential listening. Ironic how the original TON drummer is now on vocals, and Johnny Kelly plays drums for APHND.

APHND are probably in my top 5 favorite bands now. I like to look at this project as a continuation of TON and Peter's spirit lives on in it. Listen to these songs:

On Topic: I'm "rating" the Type O, albums just for the kicks, i love them all obviously i'm just arranging them from my favorite to my least favorite...

1. Bloody Kisses
2. Life is Killing Me
3. October Rust
4. World Coming Down
6. Slow, Deep, Hard
7. Origin of the feces
8. Dead Again

...still, they never recorded a bad album!

1. October Rust
2. Bloody Kisses
3. World Coming Down
4. Origin of the Feces
5. Dead Again
6. Life Is Killing Me
7. Slow, Deep and Hard (I felt these songs are presented WAY better on OOTF)

A Guide to TON's Borrowed and Derivative Riffs
http://forum.typeonegative.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=41644

So, I created a thread devoted to cataloging the riffs Type O borrowed over the years, but it was eaten by the board. I'm trying to put that list back together, but this time in a Google Doc spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0ArjZ5sK94QMLdE1ybm43bUtsenlmOG9qTm9mTXFsb Wc&output=html) for posterity.

So help me out and fill in the missing pieces. I know there were more examples on the old list.

This is stupid necroposting but listening to the band earlier (Bloody Kisses) made me realize something. With all the musician deaths and premature talent endings in the music industry, Peter Steele's passing is the ONLY one that actually pisses me off and makes me upset to a degree. I know I don't personally know the man or his family or band mates but fuck, it's such a horrible loss. Seriously. Even 4 years later. Damn. :(

For laughs, as I always find this hilarious to watch:

I saw Type O on October Rust too, in dallas.
I met peter that night, and he humbly thanked me for spending my money to come to the show, said he knew i worked hard for it and it meant a lot to him that i would buy a ticket. The only part of that night that i didn't like was someone on type o's crew trying to get my girl and her best friend (who was secretly kinda my girl too) backstage, along with a third girl who was with me. They said that the band wanted to hang out with us, but oh, geez, they only had three backstage passes so how about the girls come back first and then...luckily one of the girls knew what time it was, lolz.

I was sixteen, and needless to say, peter's words meant a WHOLE lot to me.
He was always humble and self effacing (like calling their best of the "least worst of.")
It really broke my heart when he died. He was such a hopeless romantic and i related to that a lot.

October is definitely type o season. I have a tradition of blasting Creepy Green Light on October 1st.
I think my favorite album of theirs is WCD.

edit:don't feel stupid about your post, Space Suicide . i know how you feel and i think a lot of the rest of us do too. Peter really seemed to share his essence with us through his lyrics and he made music for the broken hearted. i think that's why he is so sorely missed.

I saw Type O Negative pretty much every time they came to London, he did seem quite ill last time, which would have been 2000 and something, 2007? He was sat down most of the show. We saw him in 1999 at the Astoria the day after seeing NIN on the Fragility tour. They were playing the same night (as NIN were doing two nights) and Pete Steele thanked everyone for not going to see NIN!

I miss and think about Type O all the time, one of my top 5 bands for sure.

I saw them twice back in the Bloody Kisses days and met them another night when they were supposed to play, but Pantera cancelled the show because the venue wouldn't take the seats off the floor.

I've got that vinyl box set that came out years ago, still sealed. It goes for crazy money on eBay even opened.

Type O was always on my list of bands that I needed to see live, but for some odd reason would very rarely, if at all, come to Canada. There may have been the odd show in the 90's in Toronto, but he never did a full fledged Canadian tour. I wonder why that was...

Because of this thread popping up, I listened/watched like an hours worth of Type O music videos last night for the first time in years. Classic stuff!

He's also sooooo young in that Jerry Springer clip, wow. Don't blame the girls for throwing themselves at him back then, he was a good looking guy.
His comments are so funny though. "I don't care about the women, i'm just trying to pay my phone bill" haha

October Rust is a gorgeous album. A real gloomy goth classic, that crushing guitar sound is orgasmic....Its weird how this group never became million sellers in the alt-rock boom in the 90s, with NIN Nirvana or even Alice in Chains or Soundgarden etc.
They had some real hits on their albums a great image but they never cracked the top 50.

I find listening to Type O these days semi-eerie, with the "obsession" with death and references to heart attacks. That being said, Type O Negative is one of maybe 10 groups or so that I discovered in high school and still listen to on a constant basis.

October Rust is an absolute masterpiece. Wolf Moon, Haunted (the Per version is awesome), Love You To Death, Bacchus; shit, the entire album, even the "throw-away" skits.

And who can forget 'Bloody Kisses'? I always wondered why Suspended In Dusk never made the final cut. Can't Lose You as a closing track makes me want to tear up every time.

Type O is the only band that dethrones NIN for me personally. It breaks my heart knowing I'll never see them live ever again and we'll never hear any more new music. They never put out a bad album. I don't think I can even think of any songs that I ever find myself skipping really, unless I'm in a certain mood. I can't say that for anyone else I've listened to over the years.

I did. I ordered the book months ago and devoured the e-book in a matter of days. When the physical book showed up a month or so later, I read it again. It was a fascinating read that was meticulously researched and thought out. Personally, I loved it. Type O has always been one of my favorite bands, so it was nice to have a book about them.

There was a little blurb from Sal, and there was quite a bit from the Carnivore guys too. I had a pretty wide understanding of the Type O world prior to the book, but I learned a lot more after reading Soul on Fire. Especially about the Dead Again era and towards the end of Peter's life (which I will warn you, does get kind of emotional).

I became a Type O fan right before October Rust came out and was lucky enough to see them on the World Coming Down tour. I always intended to see them again, but kept putting it off until it was too late. At least I saw them once.

I don't suppose that box set would be up for sale/trade negotiations??? It's a longshot but worth asking...

Nah, don't want to part with it really.

I can imagine the DA era would be pretty emotional to read about. I downloaded the eBook version but I'm old fashioned and prefer actual books, so will wait for the physical product to arrive before I dig in.

Random question:

As we all know, the original version of Summer Breeze that TON covered by Seals & Crofts was called Summer Girl with different, more obscene lyrics and transitioned right into Set Me On Fire, making it one, long 8+ minute track that was available on a promo CD. Seals & Crofts didn't like it, and made them re-record it with the original lyrics, and then Set Me On Fire comes after it on the album as a seperate track.

I remember reading a long time ago that the digipak, re-released version of Bloody Kisses has a lyric booklet that contains the lyrics for the originally intended version of Summer Girl. Is this true? And if so does anyone have a scan they can provide? Wolfkiller ?

Ok, sorry for the delay Ryan, last couple of days, i've been between my work and house but only to eat/sleep and work so i didn't had the time to check my "Bloody Kisses" booklet and post about "Summer Breeze", but here it is (I'll transcript the whole context of the question asked about the song...)

Q: Whose idea was it to cover "Summer Breeze"
A: Hickey: It certainly wasn't me -i never liked the song.. But Peter grew up listening to that kind of soft rock -he got it from his sisters. I like ou version; I just don't like the original. It's elevator rock. It makes me feel like i'm sitting at the dentist, waiting to get a molar removed.
Steele: Most bands like to take heavy songs and redo them as if they can do them better. I like to take light songs and turn them into something heavy. I'm not sure exactly how that one came abut, but i think at rehearsal about 4,000 years ago, I said to Kenny, "Play this fuckin' riff". Someone in the band had some pills, and we were chewing them up and swallowing them, so i started singing, "Some of these make me feel fine".

So there it is, i always thought they might have recorded another version for the song with alternative lyrics (just like they did with their "Black Sabbath" cover) and that the other version had the "pills" lyrics, but "Summer Girl", never mentions the pills.

Weve got b sides from WCD but thats it right? Maybe one from LIKM. Too bad there isnt any more. I find it hard to believe that everything theyve ever recorded is released but i think i read Josh saying just that.

edit 1- Also, two songs that wouldve sounded perfect as TON covers....'the black widow" by alice cooper (specifically the the ending part, you can just imagine the gang vocals and pete's 'ooh's and ah's fitting perfectly), and 'suppers ready' by genesis.

edit 2- fav part of a TON song, the 'chorus' and outro of a dish best served coldly....the "how many times...part. Perfection.

I certainly hope they release some of their demos or/and B-sides, that's why i loved the digipack version of Bloody Kisses, the special edition of "Life is Killing Me", also has a great "bonus CD", maybe it's time to release a "Type O Box" with all the "lost" stuff in one place...

Also, how about a vinyl reissue of World Coming Down? That's one of my favorite albums of all time and it can only be found in that damn boxset. It feels like hunting for a white whale trying to find that stupid thing.

henryeatscereal
01-22-2015, 12:25 PM
I also missed the "Vinyl set" but it would be great to be able to buy them again, either as the box or as "single discs".
As for the "B sides" box, i imagine a boxset with 4 CD's: B-Sides, Live Tracks, Covers and Remixes, i would buy ASAP.

Weve got b sides from WCD but thats it right? Maybe one from LIKM. Too bad there isnt any more. I find it hard to believe that everything theyve ever recorded is released but i think i read Josh saying just that.

Pretty much, but they were then released on The Least Worst Of.

Which b-side are you referring to from LIKM? The promo CD had those alternate mixes, and Drunk In Paris is called Loud And Queer and sounds reasonably different.

On the LIKM bonus disk, isnt there an instrumental Out of the Fire? Sounds like it was recorded during that era. Also Highway Star sounds LIKM-ish. I love Drunk in Paris. Not sure if ive heard the alt.

Out Of The Fire was recorded for the WWE but they didn't end up using it and Highway Star was for a Nascar soundtrack I think.
I too don't believe it when they say everything is out. There has to be demos for at least every album after Origin Of The Feces. They mentioned Dead Again being cut way down because they jammed on most of the songs and it was super long. There just HAS to be more stuff, I think they just have zero interest in putting it out.

Wasn't "Out of the Fire" a "proposed" theme song for the WWE Wrestler Kane? (for all non wrestling fans: Kane's song in the WWE is called "Out of the Fire" and sounds similar to the one Type O, did...)

You are correct. WWE went with a more nu-metal batch of bands at that point instead of investing in good music. The day The Undertaker came out to Limp fucking Bizkit was when wrestling died to me. :(

Of the many Type O shows that I saw beginning in 1993,only once did I meet Peter Steele. This was the LIKM Tour in Syracuse,NY 2003. He just came out and sat down and talked to the fans that were still hanging around. I don't think he disliked meeting fans but maybe he was more of a private or shy person offstage.

1) Summer Breeze was from Bloody Kisses but this has October Rust artwork,

God seeing a green pic with the words around the corners makes me sad. I miss them. That looks really cool. Let us know how it is.

Just finished it and it is a fascinating read; found out some things I didn't know about before, like how Kenny mentions they tried playing Suspended In Dusk live once but the audience hated it. Alternate artworks for albums and titles, etc.

It does get very sad towards the end, and even sadder to now know that what Peter actually died from could have been prevented if he had gone to a hospital sooner and not ignored the vomiting and stomach pain he had.

I had no idea that he even had a new album title, "Double Crossed," in mind for the next record, inspired by one of the images he saw in a church he was attending (a vertical line with a typical horizontal one at the top to make a cross, and one at the bottom), accentuating the motif of him feeling "double crossed" by his sisters institutionalising him and all that.

There are even hand written lyrics printed in the book for a song he was working on for it called Seven Stars. So sad to know he was so ready to record a new record and in a total happy mindset. The final cause of death was necrosis of the organs to due something wrong with a part of his stomach, but he kept ignoring the warning signs and was too concerned at the time with one of his cats who had a tumour and was dying. All so sad.

Ryan

P.S. - the cover for that Summer Breeze promo was going to be the cover for October Rust at one stage.

Also, they constantly mention demo versions of Bloody Kisses played to Roadrunner, etc, so there is definitely a lot of stuff yet to be released from the vaults.

Kind of an in-joke; he signed them to Roadrunner Records.

I always associated it even before that, they just have a sound that's associated with a time of season for me I guess. A Title like October Rust helps too.

Also looking at release dates in the 90's they do release them late summer/fall:

OR: August 20, 1996

My bad, I didn’t mean for it to be a vs. sort of thing. I was going through my music and realized that I never got around to buying either October Rust or Life is Killing Me, and other than a few songs on each, I haven’t heard either album all the way through. I may try to pick one up this month if the money is there, and just wondered peoples general opinion as to which one would be more worth it. Listening to them on youtube is probably an option, but who has time for that? My music listening is usually mostly while driving or jogging.

So far everyone agrees on October Rust. Thanks. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Ryan , in Australia, when do the leaves turn and you get "swirling fog gloom" and such?
I feel this fucking quickening in october when it starts to get cooler and the leaves crackle under my feet and it seems like everything is exciting and possible and it is my absolute favorite season. I blast Creepy Green Light every October 1st.
So is this season april or may, something like that, in australia?

That would be amazing! I'm still kicking myself in the ass for not picking up that vinyl set on RSD a few years back. I would kill to have that, but there's no way in hell I'm gonna spend over 500 bucks for what essentially amounts to two albums (LIKM and WCD). You know I was thinking in bed last night before I drifted off,

When you look at interviews and whatnot from 1996 during October Rust Peter was so happy and talkative, what the hell happened to Pete in 1997 and 1998 to lead to a title track like World Coming Down?

Atu
08-25-2016, 12:56 PM
Some death in the family, as far as I remember - his father. Also some depression; I remember reading an interview (in Polish Metal Hammer, i think) with him around 1999, where he talked about dreams he had where he'd kill "people close to him", and stuff like that.

EDIT: Scratch father's death - it happened earlier.

I just started this discussion:

http://www.typeonegative.co/showthread.php?198-Artwork-if-Pete-stuck-with-TDID-title&p=1063#post1063

I've always wondered what album artwork Peter would have had in mind before the eleventh hour decision to change the title from The Dream Is Dead to LIKM. Obviously he wouldn't have used the flatline image, I don't think. I wonder if there are any artwork prototypes out there for TDID idea?

Ryan
08-28-2016, 12:25 AM
Also, can't believe how Peter could take an (already) juggernaut like this and refine it even further to Suspended In Dusk. What do you think he meant by the demo lyrics? A vampire asking it's victim to metaphorically scream because it is unable to do all the things a regular human can? How do you interpret it?

How do people find gems like this?!

About the "with meeeeee"part, it's similar to "am I?" part in the end of Love You to Death, so they might want to leave one out.
Also, with Burnt Flowers Fallen being one of my favourite TON songs, I wouldn't change one sound in it (maybe except ditching the drum machine for live drums). Nonetheless, I'd love to hear full demo version.

This is not exactly Type O Negative news but it is related. Recently Johnny Kelly moved to Frisco, TX which is a suburb of Dallas. There was a an article in the local Observer that he was doing private drum lessons. I decided to take it a step further and ask him if he would be interested in doing some studio work. Long story short, he said said he had not before but still said yes. For a VERY reasonable price Johnny brought his kit to my house and we tracked drums in the living room. He spent about 5 hours there and we got about 6-7 drum tracks recorded for our album. We are currently recording the rest and editing. It should be out the first quarter of next year. It was a great experience and we got a ton of random stories out of it. We all tried to be professional and not ask but he took it upon himself to tell away. He was a super nice guy and we may even do it again some time. At the very end my buddy nerded out and asked him to play along to "Love it to Death" and he did. It was freaking badass!

How recently is recently? Spent a few weeks working there last May ('17) and I joked at one point that there was a guy who looked astonishingly like him, but never thought for even a second that it actually was. Oh... lay my soul to waste IS their 2nd album??? It's the only one I thought existed. Yes, I am very well acquainted with that record. Fantastic record. Been patiently waiting for the follow-up. So what you posted above is the follow-up that I've been waiting for. Ok... I had a feeling there hadn't been another release between them. Thought I was going crazy there for a minute.

A pale horse named death does not get nearly enough credit. This band deserves a spot on most festivals these days. Do they even tour for this project? It's a shame if they don't. Great stuff! They deserve more recognition.

Edit: after I finished typing this, the next song to come on my playlist on my mp3 player (which is on shuffle) was actually "cold dark mourning" what a coincidence lol.

Ohh, right. Well the first album was “And Hell Will Follow Me” in 2011. Definitely check out that album - As Black As My Heart, To Die In Your Arms, Serial Killer, Meet The Wolf, When Crows Descend Upon You (the song from which the band name is derived), Pill Head, Cracks In The Walls, Devil In The Closet, Die Alone... there’s also a vinyl-only exclusive song called Pickup Truck you can find on YouTube: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/And_Hell_Will_Follow_Me

Sal mentioned the first record was heavily influenced by Peter [Steele]. Hell, he may have even given him ideas on the album since he only passed in April 2010 and the debut record saw a 2011 release.

They’re touring Europe early next year: https://www.facebook.com/APHND/ (https://m.facebook.com/APHND/)

Edit: after I finished typing this, the next song to come on my playlist on my mp3 player (which is on shuffle) was actually "cold dark mourning" what a coincidence lol.

Haha, nice. Sal noticed that Ghost named their current tour “A Pale Tour Named Death” and suggested they must be fans. I’d personally put it down to coincidence.

I remember when the name of that tour came out, tons of comments were saying how a pale horse and Ghost should totally tour together. Totally a missed opportunity with a tour name like that. APHND opening for Ghost... Christ, what a show that would be.

Hey man, at this point we are not as far along as we want to be. Both of us have full time jobs and I have a wife and kids. I have a few little blips I can share in the meantime.
#1 This is just a clip of us jamming live trying to sound like Type O poorly! https://soundcloud.com/lance-dillon-lyon/jared-lance-jk-jam-clip-4-22-18
#2 This is the bare bones of a song that will probably make the record. There are guitars and vocals and it will probably be arranged differently. This is just synths and I programmed the drums from one shot samples from the session. https://soundcloud.com/lance-dillon-lyon/petes-will-its-never-enough It will not be called Pete's Will, that was just a joke.
#3 (This one is for fun and not related to the band) I make comedy videos as well and this is a theme song for a video we are making about a 90s style board game called "Hit (The Game)". Think like Crossfire and games like that where they just had these intense hard rock/metal songs. I told Johnny about this during a smoke break and he jammed to the track two takes and that was that. Of course, we kept the first one: https://soundcloud.com/lance-dillon-lyon/hit-the-game-jk-on-drums-quicky-mix

Anyways, I appreciate your interest. I will post back here once we have a date. We actually had a little meeting yesterday and mapped out some things we need to do. Maybe by summer time? I don't know.
In other news I am working with a parody youtube channel and I am the music making portion of it all. They want to do something Type O related so I am going to ask Johnny and maybe see if Kenny or Josh would be interested. It is a parody site but they want to be respectful. I'll let you know how that goes!

@ManBurning (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=33) - new APHND album is out on the 19th. Here’s one of the first reviews (8/10). Interesting that they don’t mention “The Woods,” as I think that’s going to be the first music video.

A Pale Horse Named Death – When The World Becomes Undone

3rd January 2019 0 (http://allabouttherock.co.uk/a-pale-horse-named-death-when-the-world-becomes-undone/#comments)By DONK (http://allabouttherock.co.uk/author/donk/)New York City Doom with tender harmonies and riffs that could literally crush bones!
Doom intros tend to fall into two categories, either A, ones of epic proportions or B, there isn’t an intro, this album has the one in category A! It has a torturous and malevolent feel to it. The chanting, water dripping and cries give you the feeling of walking through a world of fear and pain. Which leads down a sorrowful path culminating with a piano on the title track ‘When The World Becomes Undone’. This track has many faces. The eerie piano leads to a thumping, crushing riff which continues for several bars before lending into a very doomy and emotive guitar part. With each second that passes in the main body of the track, even though it’s a fairly standard verse, chorus, verse song, it has so many levels to it that are accentuated with layers of vocal and piercing effects.

We head on feet first in to the album with some excellent songs. Love The Ones You Hate, Vultures and End Of Days being prime examples of tracks that you can listen too on repeat without fear of them blowing and loosing interest in. I love how End Of Daysbuilds as a song. The slow, deliberate tempo with a driven bass leading the way, ending in a crushing wall of fuzz.
One continuous theme through the entire album is the feeling of eeriness, whether between the tracks, footsteps, crunching through a wood or a harmonic feedback, there is something there that makes the hair stand on end and look over your shoulder in-case your being followed by some other world apocalyptic creature or cult.
Lay With The Wicked, Splinters and We All Break Down add some solemn proceedings to the album with a much more intense, thought-provoking feel. Then Dreams Of The End comes along and takes you on an epic journey of some of the darkest, most hidden corners of the mind. Listening to it is like walking through a Labyrinth of your worst fears, not knowing what is around the next corner or where the door leading from the nightmare is!
For me though the stand out track is Fell In My Hole, from the intro riff to the hook I thoroughly enjoyed every part of the song. Big guitars, solemn solos, driven bass and huge drums accompanying the vocals tick every box for me.
This album has something fresh and exciting to it. Something that makes you want to listen to it time and time again and not be bored or fed up with it. Something that makes you check over your shoulder when getting off the bus in the middle of nowhere in the dark.
It’s not for everyone, but it is for me.
Score 8/10
