Just making the thread for when new news comes about.

Most recently:

Vince Clarke And Martin L. Gore Announce Details Of Brand New Collaboration - VCMG

After 30 years working on their respective ongoing music projects, Vince Clarke (Erasure / Yazoo / Depeche Mode) and Martin L. Gore (Depeche Mode) come together for the first time since 1981 as VCMG to release a brand new album preceded by a series of EPs.

VCMG is the fruit of initially tentative discussion and subsequent enthused collaboration where Vince and Martin, both influential as pioneers in electronic music, get to exercise their lifelong love of the genre as the techno inspired VCMG.

As Vince explains: "I've been getting into and listening to a lot of minimal dance music and I got really intrigued by all the sounds... I realised I needed a collaborator... so it occurred to me to talk to Martin."

Says Gore: "Out of the blue I got an e-mail from Vince just saying, 'I'm interested in making a techno album. Are you interested in collaborating?' This was maybe a year ago. He said, 'No pressure, no deadlines,' so I said, 'OK'."

The writing and recording of the album was done in a typically unique way with the pair working alone in their respective studios, communicating only via email, exchanging files until the album was ready. It was in May 2011 that the pair met for the first time to discuss the project when they both performed at Short Circuit presents Mute festival in London.

The album (title to be announced soon) was produced by Vince Clarke and Martin L. Gore and mixed by the influential Californian electronic artist Überzone / Q and will be released in the spring of 2012.

The first release is an EP entitled Spock. EP1 / SPOCK will feature remixes from Edit-Select, aka Tony Scott, the UK DJ / producer and founder of EditSelect Records whose previous remix credits include Speedy J, Death In Vegas and Gary Beck; Regis, British techno musician Karl O'Connor, member of the Sandwell District collective and co-founder of Downwards Records); Zak aka DVS1, founder of Hush Records and one of the most prominent figures in US dance music counts techno innovator Derrick May amongst his biggest fans, with his second ever release on May's own Transmat plus XOQ, the alter ego of Überzone / Q, who mixed the VCMG album.

EP1 / SPOCK will be available initially as a global exclusive on Beatport on 30 November, and then on all DSPs from 12 December with the 12" release following on 19 December 2011.

I've been a longtime U2/ Depeche Mode fan and I was a little disappointed by the cover. I think that they should have covered one of the other songs instead. Hopefully it will grow on me soon. But I'm really excited to see what will come out of VCMG! :)

was definitely disappointed with the new u2 cover as well as most of sounds of the universe, but still a killer band. obviously a bigger fan of their earlier material (speak and spell through violator), but they've got some modern day gems, as well.

I love just about everything DM have done from 1984-2005. I was rather embarrassed by the last album and my interest in the earliest material is limited to singles.

Well I have to disagree here. I'm more of a 84-11 fan. I loved Sounds of the Universe. I also loved Exciter and my favourite album is Ultra. I can't stand much Speak & Spell and A Broken Frame. I can't wait for their next album! Rumor has it they are having a meeting in January and they will hopefully begin recording in March 2012...

I know I’m in the minority on this one, but I love Sounds Of The Universe. I was not really a fan of Exciter or Playing the Angel. I’m still listening to Sounds Of The Universe quite often. I pretty much like everything from Some Great Reward to Ultra.
I think the U2 cover is alright. I’ve always thought the original was a little too long and obviously think the same about the cover. I think cover and original would benefit by cutting 2 minutes or so off.

for those not into the earlier material, give the original some bizarre comp. version of 'photographic' a spin, as well as 'tora tora tora' from the LP. among their best tunes, despite being surrounded by a lot of dated tracks. i also recommend a closer glance at 'the sun and the rainfall' from a broken frame.

to amend my last post, i loved playing the angel, and ultra would have made a fantastic EP, IMO.

I'll never forgive them for 'Peace'... Anyway, I like 25% of Exciter 72% of PTA and 36% of SOTU.

Hopefully Martin will put aside his retro synth collection and make an album worthy to sit along side Violator and SOFAD. Flood and Wilder producing. Dream on.

The only track from SOTU that I remember, let alone enjoy, is "Come Back". PTA is an excellent album and Exciter is at least 75% quality. There's about 4 or 5 tracks on Ultra that I enjoy and the rest is fairly dispensable, so I too believe an EP would've worked well. Songs on Faith and Devotion is my personal favorite, Violator great and all of the 80s albums fantastic IMO (especially Some Great Reward). Just recently gained an appreciation for A Broken Frame after writing it off for years as the worst Depeche album for reasons unknown.

very happy to hear that, xmd 5a. for a long time, i dismissed speak & spell and construction time again, but have recently found major appreciation for both records. 'told you so' and the aforementioned tracks slay me.

I quit collecting fan-mixes years ago (really liked a lot of yours btw!) but Island did a hell of a good recreation of the 94 live mix (here (https://rs573l32.rapidshare.com/#%21download%7C573l3%7C351314748%7CWEEK0938_08.rar %7C10857%7CR%7E1856BB381FE66C572304B812505FC6D1%7C 0%7C0)) as I'm sure you've heard. Anywhoo, i'm hopeful his IWYN remix will be included on the next release somewhere. Would make a great B-side i think.

That's pretty cool. I heard Martin's interview with the German magazine about the "early 2013" release date (SWEET!) but I didn't hear about Hillier. I think Ben was really good for DM with PTA but I think Martin's "retro/vintage synth" idea took far too much precedence in SOTU and Hillier didn't know what to work with. I like a lot of it, but I really want something different this time.

On the Vince Clark, Martin Gore record it says there is a remix by a MAT JONSON, does this mean MATT JOHNSON as in from THE THE.
I know Depeche Mode and The The have a long shared history, being on Some Bizarre and touring and having the same vein of music in the 1980's.

But then if that is Matt Johnson from The The....then WOW, words cant express my love for THE THE not so much Depeche Mode, do like them but, not as much...Matt Johnson he has hardly done anything for fucking years, since Naked Self, there have ben rumors he is coming back. So this would be cool.

I like some of this groups material but always found them a bit weird. Love the Underworld Remix for Barrel of a Gun.

Matt Johnson was seriously overlooked, and The The should have sold just as many records as Depeche Mode. They were very close those Some Bizarre bands, Matt, He was a real proto British Trent Reznor character in the 1980's, elusive genius in the press with much respect and sold loads of records, extremely talented, one man band, multi instrumentalist, with a real songwriting gift, a dark reputation, who made synth/aggressive pop music. He was a much better lyricist however, he had a real gift with lyrics Matt did.*

Soul Mining was the best, he was 20, insane, Burning Blue Soul has an incredible atmosphere to it, *but loved Infected and Pornography of Despair and some of Johnny Marr's work on Dusk, After Dusk he sort of just gave up, and vanished and Depeche Mode sold out stadiums, its odd how they broke huge in the U.S and The The didnt. I dont think Matt gave a shit to be honest.
But respect to Depeche Mode they always supported people they idolized. They also brought Wire, Fad Gadget and Primal Scream out with them too.

EDIT -.... Oh well, i can dream .......who the fucK is that GUY????? please come back other Matt anyway.

Soulsavers release their new album 'The Light The Dead See' through Cooperative Music/V2 Records on 21st May. Featuring vocals and lyrics by Dave Gahan, the record is the follow-up to 2009's critically acclaimed album 'Broken'. Recorded at various locations and mastered at Abbey Road, the record will be available on CD, LP and as a download.
"There was no real script," says the laconic Rich Machin of the extraordinary fourth album 'The Light The Dead See', a set of songs of majesty and momentum. "It just rolled and rolled; it was effortless." Yet the writing was on the wall from the moment Dave Gahan stepped in to tackle vocal duties that this was going to be something very special. "We realised we were coming from the same place in so many ways," adds Machin. "He's really laid himself bare on this record, his performances are astonishing: he really is a terrific singer." Says Gahan, "Everything about it was relatively unplanned, surprising: a magical thing. We were a perfect match and I'm very, very excited about this record."
Gahan's lyrics and melodies came to him with spontaneity and passion. "About five songs in, I realised I was writing outside myself. I was having a go at myself, to be honest: my questions around faith, and God, or the lack thereof at any given moment. Sometimes I'm full of faith, but there are always questions. And I struggle with letting go of control of what's going on around me. This album became very therapeutic. No restrictions. Coming out of getting sick myself, I found I HAD to get this stuff out of me. This music gave me the perfect palate to play with the BIG questions that we all ask when life becomes less about what can we GET, than: what can we DO? I've been very fortunate, and I'm privileged in my life, so I want to do things I feel really connected to now, otherwise there's no point. Rich and I had both come out of something difficult. This is something to do with that. It was a wonderful experience."
'The Light The Dead See' track listing:
1. La Ribera
2. In The Morning
3. Longest Day
4. Presence of God
5. Just Try
6. Gone Too Far
7. Point Sur Pt.1
8. Take Me Back Home
9. Bitterman
10. I Can't Stay
11. Take
12. Tonight

Yeah, it's a bit unclear about Dave's contribution with Soulsavers, but at the moment everything points to him being the main vocalist for the whole album! They've used Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) in the past with guests such as Mike Patton and Gibby Haynes. The first album had jazz musician Josh Haden on it....... so yeah, it seems like Dave's the man this time around! Weird!

As for VCMG - very much what both Mart and Vince are into these days, the sound doesn't surprise me at all. I dig Martin's contribution to Motor's "Man Made Machine" too. :)

God, Lanegan did do a great job, didn't he? I love that album. I think Gahan plus the Soulsavers sounds like an amazing, amazing idea on paper, so I have high hopes for the album. Dave's got a low gravely (when it wants it) baritone, just like Lanegan, and to me it seems to have gained gravity with age. Some of the vocals on his last solo album were unbelievable, "Deeper and Deeper," comes to mind.

I actually like the mixture of Dave's songs with Martin's these days on the albums. (OK fine, PTA more than SOTU, but still.) "Come Back" was ruined by production and a bit too long, but stuff like "Nothing's Impossible" and "Oh Well" are solid DM songs.

If you've got "I Need You" in a slipcase, it's worth the most, not as many of them went out. I've seen the other slipcases (empty) offered anywhere from €15-€25... so maybe €30 for "I Need You." With CD's? Not much more, the discs are pretty easy to find.

I agree with everyone who says Sounds of the Universe was amazing. Favorite tracks were Fragile Tension, Little Soul, In Sympathy, Come Back, Peace, Perfect and Miles Away.

Loved Playing The Angel.... Pain That I'm Used To, John The Revelator, Suffer Well, Precious, Macro, Nothings Impossible, Damaged People, Lilian...

The thing about Come Back is that there are versions to suit everybody, and all of them pretty easily available to find in good quality.

The demo version: more stripped down electronic and direct (possibly my favourite version for it's stereo panning work and general colder tone)

The album version: big brash & dirty, purposefully in-your-face desperate & yearning.

The 'studio sessions' version: cleaner & more soulful with room for the more subtle spot effects to breathe

Dave Gahan's 2007 Hourglass demo version: If anything a more mid-period DM sounding version than the final album one.

Gotta love a bit of Come Back action!

Edit: I forgot the mono Ch3 rip of the vocal track from the 5.1 that is actually pretty good in it's own way. Very clean clear vocals but just some of the distorted guitar & spot work leaking through the same channel.

I think "Peace" is a great song in the studio. It however, was pretty damn weak live. The intro was one of the few goosebumps moments during my first listen-through of SOTU in fact, so yeah, to each his own right.

Edit: I forgot the mono Ch3 rip of the vocal track from the 5.1 that is actually pretty good in it's own way. Very clean clear vocals but just some of the distorted guitar & spot work leaking through the same channel.

Shit, totally forgot about the boxset demo... I always listen to Dave's demo, which is my favorite. The sound of the studio session is awesome, but again it's structure is way too long and plodding for me.

I loved Come Back in it's original version and didn't really think about the "long and prodding" nature much, but since this thread I found the original 2007 and I must say I also agree that it's much better.

Excellent work! I know I've gushed over your mixes before, but this was great work.

I loved the darkness and aggression added to them all, especially NLMDA. New Dress too, but it got a smidge loud on my first listen. IFL got some much needed balls! Nice job! Not a big fan of the vocal/rhythm change-ups in Policy of Truth, but I know it's a stylistic choice that I'll never get. It's me not you, no worries, you handled it well. Great job all around! :)

To be honest, there are so many DM remix packs put out by people that I kinda started to stop bothering with them a few years ago. You get kinda snow-blind, you know?
After giving these a go I'm now grabbing your others to catch up. No way I'm passing these by!

I think "Peace" is a great song in the studio. It however, was pretty damn weak live. The intro was one of the few goosebumps moments during my first listen-through of SOTU in fact, so yeah, to each his own right.

Yep I love the intro too. Just before it kicks in there's what sounds (to me) like a little bit of (intentional) detuning, perhaps referencing the analogue vibe that runs through the whole album.

Speaking to inthemix down the line recently, Fletcher expressed his disappointment at not playing in Australia since the ‘90s.

“It’s always been a bit of a blight on our career that we haven’t been to Australia that many times,” Fletcher told inthemix. “We know a lot of Australian people so that makes it even worse. We tried to get over on our last tour, but Dave [Gahan] had a bit of a bad time and we couldn’t make it” he said before offering a bit of hope by saying that the band are “definitely going to try and get across in future”.

Depeche Mode (http://www.nme.com/artists/depeche-mode)'s Dave Gahan has confirmed that the band should finish work on their new album later this year.

Speaking to Spin (http://www.spin.com/articles/dave-gahan-depeche-mode-plan-be-touring-next-year), the frontman said that that sessions on the as-yet-untitled new LP were progressing quickly and that there was "no reason" why the record shouldn't be completed by the end of 2012.

http://static.nme.com/images/article/DaveGahanDepecheModePA280311.jpgGahan, who previously said that the recording sessions on the album were "very different" (http://www.nme.com/news/depeche-mode/62400) to the way they had worked in the past, said: "We've probably got 20 songs demoed. Some of the songs are in really good shape, some need some work, but we're definitely on track."

He went on to add:

We have a deadline of the end of November, and there's no reason why we won't meet that at the rate we're going.
The singer, who paid tribute to Fever Ray producer Christopher Berg for his work on the album so far and his "fantastic ideas", also said it was likely that the band would play live shows in 2013, stating: "There are already plans in place to be touring next year."

butters
05-08-2012, 10:44 AM
Yep, I won't get started on my "don't wanna hear" list... but let's just say it does include PJ. I wish they'd treat it like Trent does with Closer - ie. use it sparingly in the appropriate settings or not at all. Wishful thinking I know. Sadly they will never play BNT. For some reason they do not like that song (something about recording it quickly in a day) but I know it was popular in the US, so it'd be a nice live surprise around here!

Honestly, my biggest critique for live shows — NEED DIFFERENT MIXES! They've settled into "live mixes" that are very good, but getting very predictable.

frankie teardrop
05-08-2012, 10:49 AM
yeah, i used to love the split/aggro mix of 'never let me down again' but now i can't listen to it anymore for that very reason. there was that quote from fletch, of all people, who wanted to mix things up a lot more, but it looks like martin's the one who wants to keep it safe as houses. i get that some people are seeing them for the first time- but they have enough classic tracks that they could still play a few mega-crowd pleasures and keep it fresh for the old fans.

i could mostly do without hearing the songs of faith and devotion mega-hits at this point...and 'home' bears repeating again.

that said, seeing the some bizarre mix of 'photographic' at jones beach was a very welcome surprise!

I don't know why they never released an official thing like this, apart from maybe extracting as much cash as possible from fans (see: single reissues). The only complaint I have is I have no idea of the provenance of the tracks (vinyl rips for the earlier b sides or sourced some other way? Cd rips for later ones, or second gen mp3 encodes found on the net?)

Their b sides rock.

More from a Norwegian article:

"I have written 6-7 songs, Martin 13 or 14, and we'll see which ones we're going to include on the album. I think 3 or 4 of my songs will be recorded. The album seems to have a strong blues feeling. Not exactly like "Violator" and "Songs Of Faith And Devotion", but definitely more direct. We'll be careful not to overproduce this time. Extra sounds aren't necessary. If the melodies are good, they do not need more. "Sounds Of The Universe" was a little overproduced, too smooth, too much was going on."

If you're following Depeche Mode on Facebook, you probably gasped aloud when you saw this…
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/576042_10151103942895329_706694784_n.jpg
…an intriguing still from the "Policy Of Truth" video with the lyrics "Never again / is what you swore" added in ominous ambiguity. Rightly so, fans are foaming at the mouth, wondering if in fact former Depeche Mode sonic architect Alan Wilder will be returning to the fold in conjunction with the group's new studio album, due out sometime next year.

| Related: Depeche Mode To Begin Work On Next Album In March (http://www.ology.com/post/48880/depeche-mode-to-begin-work-on-next-album-in-march) | So, is it true? Is Alan Wilder really rejoining Depeche Mode? The answer: we don't know… yet. But probably… and here's why:
As SPIN (http://www.spin.com/articles/depeche-mode-stir-speculation-former-members-return?utm_source=spintwitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=spintwitter) points out, Wilder, whose keen recording studio know-how and prodigious ear for dense, sonically adventurous arrangements brought the English synth group to a creative and commercial apex in the mid to late '80s, recently performed with the band at a charity concert at London's Royal Albert Hall in 2010. He also contributed to last year's Remixes 2: 81-11 and has repeatedly been spotting around and about London drinking espresso and laughing heartily with Martin Gore and Dave Gahan. Okay, so I made that last part up… but the point is, there's no ill will between all involved parties. Hell, Martin and Vince Clarke have been working together—why not bring Alan back on board? It certainly didn't hurt Black Celebration or Violator in the Awesome Classic Albums department, right?

i know it's been the topic of speculation since he left, but i do think he's a pretty key ingredient. while i like a lot of the material released since the mid-90s (and don't think they're as lost without him as some hardcore fans believe), the clear favorites all have wilder's hand in them.

ok, i forgot about violator & ultra when i was saying that. i should have specified "from their early period." i don't like any of the ballad-y stuff. just like with tom waits, i prefer the darker/more avant garde songs.

i actually got the box set of "sounds of the universe" and, despite the lack of vinyl, was pleased with its contents. depeche mode in 5.1 is really my favourite way to listen to them, and i could honestly say if there was a "box sets anonymous" i would be in it.

i'm not feeling it, personally. as much as i love blues & goth mixed (nick cave, crime and the city solution, etc.) i don't think it works well with depeche mode (though i liked it on dave's second solo record). the song is kind of a snoozer until the midway point when the electronics really kick in but it still doesn't wow me.

still holding out for some great album cuts. i loved playing the angel but loathed sounds of the universe, so i'm curious to see where it goes from here. hopefully the tour is a little more imaginative in the setlist department. still feel like a chump for paying $100 to hear new songs, the same hits, and a few rarer singles (strangelove, fly on the windscreen).

I love the shit out of this.. Industrial blues with a chorus that somehow sounds like The Beatles.. I'm most impressed! Though i said something similar with 'Wrong' and was let down by the rest of the SOTU album. I live in hope this album remains consistant with 'Angel' or whateveryoucallit.

i am, too... but there's enough cave and cave-related material out there to keep me more than satisfied (just saw crime & the city solution last night and it was amazing). however, i really don't like the mix of blues riffs and electronics (nor do i like modern bands jocking the cave thing while i'm here). but hey, enjoy! i'm gonna sit this one out and not buy until i know what the rest of the album sounds like.

i vaguely recall this article as well, probably had the magazine eons ago but damned if i know where it went. lost all my clippings a long time ago. however, dave was a downright wreck when recording that album and it shows on songs like 'barrel of a gun' where you can downright hear the strain in his voice and the heroin drag in the chord changes. i wouldn't be surprised if he was high as a kite while singing the majority of that record, though i know he did a lot of the vocals while he was recovering in rehab. we're lucky he got out of that era alive...

Depeche Mode is one of the few bands that doesnt completely blow sober.

They may not be as genius as they were in the 90's but they are still damn fantastic with everything they do now. I still purchase every record from them. Cant say the same for another dark electronic artist we all know...

i'm not even sure i could attribute their not being quite as awesome to sobriety. Maybe it just comes with getting older? But damn they are still excellent.

well, it's difficult to draw comparisons to a one man, one band, one addiction scenario to what depeche mode went through in the 90s. at the time, dave wasn't a songwriter for the band. i can't speak for martin's intake, but as the main songwriter, it seems like he's remained fairly consistent if but past prime, which happens to most bands with a long career as discussed elsewhere.

long story short, you can't draw a comparison to NIN here, nor do i think drugs had much to do with the songwriting process for DM, aside from an obviously dark edge to ultra that reflects what they were going through at the time, trying to carve a new identity after losing alan & dealing with dave.

helping out with the question at hand, tune in about 17 minutes in. sounds like he was definitely high when doing the vocals, doing them syllable by syllable:

On the band's website, Depeche Mode's Martin Gore said, "The music has a similar vibe to [1990's] Violator and [1993's] Songs of Faith and Devotion and I think the songs on the album are among some of the very best we've done." Meanwhile, describing the record, Dave Gahan said it's "not a blues record, but it definitely has a soulful vibe."

The fact that Depeche Mode went to Columbia should quiet the people who complained that HTDA signed to them. Obviously they're doing something right over there. With the sale of EMI to Universal, they were contractually obligated to shed certain bigger acts (Pink Floyd, etc), so I'm guessing DM was one of those. Daniel Miller has expressed interest in buying back Mute Records, but then he wouldn't have the huge distribution that they enjoyed with EMI, which a band like Depeche Mode needs. One could argue they don't need it, but they don't seem like the sort of band that wants to go the DIY route like NIN or Radiohead.

I was just browsing though the Depeche Mode tag on Instagram, and found some photos of a NYC stylist called Mark Holmes (http://statigr.am/styleitholmes) who worked on Corbijn's videoshoot with DM in New Orleans last November. The photos were online all this time but he tagged only a few with #depechemode, so that must be why they went unnoticed. These photos give more of an idea of what the video(s) will look like. As you know, a month ago a local newssite revealed (http://www.bestofneworleans.com/blogofneworleans/archives/2012/11/29/the-marigny-opera-house-grows-into-an-arts-center) that DM was going to shoot a video in a church.

On the 25th of November (http://statigr.am/p/332190594099969932_5790894), he uploaded a pic of himself with the caption, "Kicking back with a glass of whiskey watching dexter at my second home. A rare night off before going to New Orleans to shoot with Depeche Mode and Anton Corbijn."

Yeah there was an interview done recently and they listened to the one played at the press conference (non-demo form I'm guessing) and Heaven.

Jan 8th, 2013 | Exclusive Interview: Timothy Saccenti (http://www.depeche-mode.com/2013/01/08/exclusive-interview-timothy-saccenti/) Here is a HOME Exclusive interview with the man behind the “Angel” video, Timothy Saccenti. My goal with this interview was simple, I just wanted to reach out to the man behind the “Angel” video and perhaps learn a little more about him. What I got was a fascinating look into a passionate, driven individual who’s thoughts are as motivating as they are insightful. This really is an honor for us here at HOME and we hope you enjoy it.

Which came first, photography or directing?
I have been immersed in photography since I was quite young, film is a more recent medium for me.
Looking back, do you still find that the things that initially drew you to doing something creative still inspires you or do you struggle with finding new inspiration when you approach a new project?
My work is mostly collaborations with artists-musicians, actors, visual artists etc, so each new project brings it’s own new energy, approach, and inspiration. I tend to be particular as to what projects I dedicate my time to to make sure it is worth the emotional investment. I’ve been very lucky in that regard as nearly all of them I’ve learned something new. There’s always a new way to see something, that’s the interesting and challenging part.
Of the two, which do you find more challenging? Does meeting that challenge bring you more reward or do you find yourself more annoyed by having to fight yourself on it?
The film pieces take longer and are much more detailed and collaborative than photography. It is more of a journey and you can’t be quite sure where it will take you. There are many people involved with opinions, talents, and emotional quirks. In that way it’s quite challenging, but the effect can be potent. You can penetrate the viewer on a deep level with film by affecting time and emotion.
And marrying moving images with music is extremely compelling. With film there is the leeway of pushing from reality, it doesn’t carry the burden of truth that photography is expected to. Photography, on the other hand, has an immediate gratification and seduction, a sense of being knowable and factual, that can elevate simple moments to a poetic plane when done properly. It can be more inclusive and intimate in some ways as it is based on a single moment in time. This can also be a burden to chose which is the most truthful of moments since they are all truth and also all lies at the same time. So each has it’s own burden and own reward.

http://www.depeche-mode.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/TimothySaccenti_blog.jpg (http://www.depeche-mode.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/TimothySaccenti_blog.jpg)
I’m sure in the early days, like anyone, you felt pretty vulnerable putting your work out there, how do you deal with less then favorable criticism these days?
Well this is a good point. It’s a tricky one. In order to create these pieces you must be sensitive and open, as, at least for much of my work, I’m creating pieces for artists themselves. So one must start the process by being very sensitive, listening, and feeling out what is the appropriate way to express their message, while running it through your own filters and feelings. Listening is very important. So you go through this process of acquiring emotional data and building a world for them, you create this together with them and your team, and then you put it out into the world and it is often met with destructive extremely vocal opinions of the masses. This though is just part of creating anything in the current environment we live in and is part of the deal you make with the world when you decide to be a creative.
I was lucky enough to create a body of work before the onslaught of internet feedback seem to take over, so in many ways I feel lucky. My point of view is based on my experiences, not generated by committee, so that gives one the confidence to create new things. I’m not sure how a new artist now would continue to create in the current hostile environment of the internet, which is where, to be fair, most people experience art at the moment. If I was going to start an art school I would definitely create a course “Surviving destructive Youtube comment trolls 101”.
In the end though you create things as a team and you solve the problems and communicate what you attempt with that team and if you are your collaborators feel it was successful that is the most important things, as cliché as that is. There will always be someone trying to take you down, and usually that person is yourself, during the process, as you sometimes painfully deconstruct your own feelings on what you are doing, trying to get to the truth. So by the time someone comments “not feeling it” on YouTube, you’ve already been through the valley of darkness and emerged with your prize, so the comments have more the net effect of a gnat buzzing in your ear. Really it is all just a game in the end.
Can you still enjoy film and photography for what it is or are you constantly critiquing what you’re looking it?
Photography is a way of engaging with the world. How you feel about a thing CHANGES when you photograph it. It is a critique of the world incarnate. As an exploratory tool nothing rivals it in the modern age, and the popularity of things like Instagram proves it. What is your favorite photograph you’ve taken ? For me it is always of a loved one. But to your question I think its interesting that we are surrounded by films and mostly photography, and you start to analyze everything, but for me I see a photograph and am usually interested in the photographers point of view, why they took the image, what led up to it, etc. It is critical, but more in a manner of looking into the mind of the creator. After making some short film pieces I most definitely looked at films in a different manner and the staggering amount of work and focus that goes into creating them.
Have you ever found yourself more confident in one formant and perhaps experimenting with techniques to see if they apply in the other? Perhaps some of your video directing skills can help in directing a photo session go smoother for example.
Photography is good as it teaches you to be quick and interact with humans in a very intimate setting. Creating a portrait of someone is making an unsaid agreement with them about what you are setting out to do together. And photography allows you to quickly try out various techniques, lighting, color, etc to get your ideas across. These skills can translate to film very well were the process is much slower, there’s much less spontenaiety, so often I’ll bring the techniques I used in photography over into my film shoots, knowing that they will work.

The software and tools used for editing just seems to be evolving so rapidly, especially over the last few years. Do you stay pretty on top if it or just kind of pick and choose what works for you?
I spend most of my time working towards visual ideas rather than the technology of it. I work with amazing people who can bring the ideas to life in a technological manner. My tastes tend to veer towards more experimental art, video art, installation works, programming art, so often I try to bring some of that to the table and work it into a context that can be collaborative within the structure of these video pieces.
How did directing Motor’s “Man Made Machine” video come about? Did working on that video start up your relationship with Depeche directly?
I had worked with Motor for many of their projects before Man Made Machine. Bryan Black and I are both huge fans of industrial, techno, electronic music and the culture around it. We get along like a house on fire, so when they brought up the Man Made Machine track we felt it would make a great video. There’s always many people involved in how these connections are made. I was working with a video commissioner who suggested me to Mute and I think a few stars aligned.
Can you tell us a little bit about how the concept for the “Angel” video come about?
It’s rare that I do an in-studio type piece, most of my work is quite art directed and conceptual, so I was drawn to the idea of trying to translate that into this studio situation. I went into meet the band and was inspired by their energy in the room, they are amazing musicians and you feel it the moment you walk in studio. I actually felt this side of them hadn’t been shown very well, so that was my main concept, show this energy… not knowing where it would take me. After filming it, the amazing editor Dayn Williams and I dedicated a large chunk of our lives carving out the film. I think we accomplished our goal on that one.http://www.depeche-mode.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/tumblr_mcis97ABto1rn57zco1_1280-1024x640.jpg (http://www.depeche-mode.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/tumblr_mcis97ABto1rn57zco1_1280.jpg)

While some minor colors can be seen through out, can you tell us the decision behind doing it primarily in Black & White?
Daylight + Black and white = magic. Also, I couldn’t control anything in the room, lighting, color, etc, so using black and white was a classic solution to formal issues that would occur in creating a consistent tonal feel.
While the band have used other people more recently, did the fact that Depeche have worked so closely with Anton Corbijn have any kind of influence or weight on your decision making at all?
Anton was a huge influnce on me growing up and is an amazing artist. The bands image had been crafted by him in such an iconic fashion, so in some ways it’s impossible to remove that from the equation. I’ve worked with many artists over time, but I do think with Depeche Mode you walk in knowing that you will be somewhat compared to Anton by the fans and in the lexicon of the bands imagery. It’s humbling and exciting to add to their legacy of iconic visual output. My style is very different from Antons, but I feel it’s a good mix, a contemporary take on the band.
Musically, you have worked with some pretty eclectic artists. Names like Flying Lotus, Washed Out, Passion Pit, and Usher having all received your signature. Do these artists reflect much of your personal taste or are you finding they are gravitating towards you?
I’ve been very lucky that most of the artist I’ve worked with are also on my playlists. I think working with artists you must be very into music, so you can speak the language with them. This is my passion and I think it translates into our works together.
What are your thoughts on music videos as a promotional medium these days? The traditional music television outlets are drowning in reality TV shows, sadly, so is the internet viable enough to keep the medium relevant?
I can’t say. I think for each project you should create what you want to see in the world and hopefully it will have a life of it’s own.

The Q-notesMartin Gore: “Heaven is quite far from what we normally do” (http://www.depechemode.de/en/martin-gore-heaven-is-quite-far-from-what-we-normally-do-19220/) January 8th, 2013 by Sven Plaggemeier
1 Comment (http://www.depechemode.de/en/martin-gore-heaven-is-quite-far-from-what-we-normally-do-19220/#comments)

http://www.depechemode.de/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/martin-gore-200x200.jpeg (http://www.depechemode.de/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/martin-gore.jpeg)The January edition of the Q-Magazine (order it here (http://www.qthemusic.com/)) features an interesting interview (“Gore Blimey”) with Martin Gore about the new album and the possibly first single Heaven (keep in mind that it’s still unconfirmed).
Thanks to Ultra_Depeche (follow him on Twitter (https://twitter.com/Ultra_Depeche)!) we got handed over some notes of the editor, that didn’t make it into the print. Additionally, and that will thrill you even more, the notes contain some of the lyrics of the possibly new single – and an exciting quote of Martin Gore about the track.
Here are the original notes. Thanks again to both the Q writer for permission and Ultra_Depeche (Twitter (https://twitter.com/Ultra_Depeche)). Please note that the Q writes listened to Heaven just onece. He describes the song as very catchy, though. Also, Heaven’s lyrics were jotted down. It’s not that they are at all accurate.
HIS PASSION FOR MUSIC STILL BURNS:
“When I was really young first had a job as a paper boy I saved all my money to buy records and thats what I did, and it’s gone of from there really. I have a passion for music, since a young age, and I still do.”
THE MYSTERY OF SONGWRITING
“Um, I want to just say in a very loose way I hate talking about songwriting because it’s something you can easily dismantle and make into something that sounds very simple. whereas ,when you listen to the overall thing it has so much power. The mystery of music is one of the things I fell in love with when I was ten years old.”
WHEN DOES HE KNOW IT’S TIME TO WRITE AGAIN
“It was time for convene – there’s an obvious moment. i start writing at a certain point and dave of course is writing now. he starts writing at a certain point and there is a moment when we both have some good bunch of songs and its a good time to get together and start planning, its very organic. ”
GAP BETWEEN RECORDS:
“There’s a long gap between each of our records… three or four years… and you never know what’s going to happen in that time. You can’t take anything for granted.”
GAP BETWEEN – DID CERTAIN TINGS INSPIRE LYRICS/MOOD?
“I don’t want to sound too…. ‘positive,’ but I personally I feel a lot happier in my own skin as I get older and that dictates what I write the way I go about writing. I think for a lot of time I didn’t feel very happy in my skin and thats a huge difference to me.”
HIS PAST DRINKING:
“It’s been a long time now since I stopped. I’ve gone beyond the point even thinking about drinking. I can go out with people getting completely wasted and I don’t even think about having a drink anymore…”
PAST – DRINKING/SEIZURES – WHEN NOT FEELING GOOD IN SKIN – SPIRITUAL THEMES AS A RESULT:
“I went through the majority of the band’s career drinking… I was functional… (hits) you can’t be happy I don’t think when you’re doing that. I was at the point where I was having seizures and once you have seizures that becomes a constant worry when you’re still drinking. I would go on stage and I’d be constantly worried ‘Oh my god am i going to have a seizure tonight? Those are the sort of things you shouldn’t have to worry about!”
THIS ALBUM:
Some of the songs don’t have titles yet. Like the first one Q hears. It’s difficult because the obvious one would be “Angel” or “Angel of Love” since that’s the chorus but that’s quite sappy isn’t it? And it’s not a sappy song.” (Indeed… menacing…)
DISTINCTLY DM
“I think it is. There are always characteristics that make us sound like us.
Dave is a great front man who has a very distinctive voice. The moment you hear him you know it’s him. Which I think is really important. A lot of singers are interchangeable.
That kind of defines out sound. One of the main things.” (shy to reveal more of the other elements….)
HIS FAMOUS HOARDING
“I’ve got quite an addictive nature in general thats probably why I went through drinking phases and health phases… now I am addicted to collecting guitars and synthesizers and anything I can use to make music.”
DAVE’S SONGS
“They’re good. He’s been working with Kurt. A new partnership. The last couple of albums he’s worked with Christian and Andrew; this time he worked with Kurt, completely different.”
SAME PRODUCER – WHAT BEN BRINGS
“Is this a trilogy?? (Laughing) I think the way Ben works is very suited to our approach to making music. He’s a very strong personality and I think thats’ what we really need. He’s completely focused and always knows exactly what he wants at all times where as we’re off and fumbling in the dark. We need a leader! This time around the demos were a lot more advanced than they usually are and Ben felt they were pointing us in the right direction and that the album had an overall feel we were going for.”
HEAVEN SONGsimple minimalist techno intro
hymnal dirge… procession of the cross… that ends with single drum like a heart beat
LYRICS (as much as I could understand):
sometimes I [CANT UNDERSTAND WORD]
silently
I slowly lose myself
over and over
take comfort in my skin
endlessly
surrender to my will
forever and ever
I dissolve in trust
I will sing with joy
I will end up dust
I’m in heaven
I stand in golden rays
radiantly
I burn a fire of love
Over and over
it sends in endless light
I have embraced the flame
forever and ever
I will scream CANT UNDERSTAND WORD
jump into the void
I will guide the CANT UNDERSTAND WORD
up to heaven
ends with minimal drum. heart beat…
MARTIN: “This track is really different for us because it sounds to me like our take on 70s rock..reminds me of rod stewart almost — there is a modern take to it, its not pure 70s rock but definitely an interesting avenue for us to explore. it’s quite far from what we normally do but still sounds like us….”

Man, that's pretty harsh! Though I have to admit when i first gave it a spin in my car i didn't dig it much either. It wasn't till i listened to that bastard in surround sound. It seems like that was the way it was meant to be heard. PTA had a good surround sound mix but SoTU really shined through. Even without surround sound songs like In Chains, Comeback and Perfect have a lot going for them.

slave2thewage

"In Chains" was a TERRIBLE opener on the last tour, though. I like a few tracks off it ("Peace", "Jezebel", "Perfect") but I thought it was lacking a spark to it. It ended up becoming Exciter II.

Hoping that this is going to be PTA II!

yeah, i loved it when it came out (i was 19 or so and sappy). i do like 'when the body speaks' and 'shine' a lot (the latter mostly for the breakdown/chorus). i put the vinyl on the other day since the missus liked that one, and i was bummed about how poorly it aged. at least it's good background music, which is more than i can say for sounds of the universe.

I was always under the impression it was about the "boys" with sleaze and sex on the brain. Never once got a vibe about pedophilia. Some songs are kind weird though. Never Let Me Down always struck me as a love song to a best friend. Love the song, but the lyrics are iffy.

Dig the new track. Reminds me of a little Faith and Devotion mixed with Exciter.
For me it evokes the devotional (confessional?) soul of Condemnation, and it instantly struck a chord with me. At the time I thought that track was an odd single choice on SOFAD too, but looking back it's easily one of the most unique and recognizable tracks on that record. Then again, SOFAD is solid gold from start to finish.

Condemnation is one of my all-time favorite Depeche Mode tracks. I cherish the times my best friend and I have belted that out together. SOFAD will likely be my favorite album from DM for the rest of my years. Heaven definitely has a similarly soulful and slowed down vibe, which I appreciate. Anyone else think it's the bravest lead single in a while? I love Wrong, and I love Precious (which continues to age gracefully), but those two are a bit more toe-tapping, yeah? Is toe-tapping an embarrassing word?

Listening to Heaven, I actually thought of Bowie's new single. Both songs are are on the slower, more contemplative side, yet still very beautiful. I think it's cool that they've both opted for a more quiet entrance back into our lives.

I'm having a wiki-day, and I noticed that Rolling Stone has historically given DM terrible reviews (except, Exciter.. lol). In 1990 they gave Violater just two stars, so in the spirit of wiki-dayness I decided to read the review. Choice excerpt:

"New Order broke pop only after it finally discarded Ian Curtis's gloom, but Depeche Mode won its ever-growing audience the opposite way — the group has been single-mindedly suffocating in Doorsy depression ever since songsmith Vince Clarke left for Yazoo, and it's becoming increasingly clear that the group will never again make a number as compelling as the 1981 gleeful rubber-duckie disco tune "Just Can't Get Enough."
