So New Order have reformed (without Peter Hook, he's still being bitchy). However, good news for us Australians: NO are scheduled to come here (currently Gillian Gilbert is back on keys), as well as Hooky doing CLOSER in April (got me a meet and greet package for that). The current touring video ad features clips I recorded from the Unknown Pleasures gig last year which is kinda cool:

Google Translator had better days, I'll try to explain this one

R - What is next?
GG - We'll play more festivals and we are going to Australia. We're not thinking about recording for now, we're just enjoying the whole thing.

"Lost Sirens" will be out soon featuring unreleased WFTSC tracks:

1. Ill Stay with You (4.22)
2. Sugarcane (4.47)
3. Recoil (5.08)
4. Californian Grass (4.38)
5. Hellbent (4.28)
6. Shake it Up (5.21)
7. Ive Got a Feeling (4.29)
8. I Told You So (5.05)

"I Told You So" is an unreleased remix (not sure if it is the Stuart Price one that was on a vinyl release previously), and "Hellbent" was recently released on a new compilation, although this version might be extended, not sure.

INFLUENTIAL British band New Order will co-headline the Future Music Festival in March. The band rarely tours and last visited Australia in 2002 for the Big Day Out.

I can't really get into New Order. Absolutely LOVE Joy Division. But New Order, not so much. No matter how hard I try to like it.

It's quite the opposite for me. Joy Division is undeniably great, but New Order has always been much more special to me.

The lack of Hooky in the reformation is disappointing (but not exactly surprising), but Gillian is back so colour me a little bit excited!

Is there possibly a good starting point to ease into it? I actually want to like them, but can't. Heh. Kinda sucks since they did such amazing work in Joy Division, but I can't get into any of the New Order stuff (that I've heard).

piko, is it the 80s synths that prevent you from getting into new order? makes sense then, that movement would be the next go-to record, and why you might not get much enjoyment out of power, corruption, and lies or low-life (my personal favorite). that said, try these two songs and see what you make of them:

Yeah, it's the synths. I've listened to movement, which I really like. Power, Corruption, and Lies is pretty nifty too.

I'm way more into Joy Division than New Order as well. For me, I think it's the fact that they've done a lot of dance-y stuff and I'm just not into that. I have The Best of New Order and I think it satisfies my interest. I really love "Touched By The Hand Of God", though.

jihad to that.

Why this band would even consider touring, collaborating or even calling itself New Order without Hook is beyond comprehension. Remember when Joy Division said they'd cease to call themselves Joy Division if any of them left or died? Same principle here

I know Hook can be a douchemuffin extraordinaire, but it's not New Order without him. Simple as that

xmd 5a

If it weren't for Gillian being back in, I'd feel the same way. But I'm keeping an open mind at this stage.

Also, don't come to me for New Order recommendations if you're not into the synth. Low-Life, Technique and Republic is the Holy Trinity for me :P

Piko
12-07-2011, 07:55 AM
I like some of the synth dancey stuff, but some of it's just a little too much. Huge depeche mode fan, so I like synth music. I've heard Movement, Corruption, Substance, and some of Republic.

Are there any other songs with Hook on vocals? The two on Movement are ace.

New Order is Dead. But Peter Hook and The Light performing Unknown Pleasures Live is absolutely amazing. Its steadily climbing my personal charts of release of the year. Its frigging amazing.

Piko
12-07-2011, 02:57 PM
Does Hook sing? I remember hearing about a year ago that he would play the album. Heard mixed things... But it is kinda weird for New Order to continue with him. Joy Division wasn't Joy Division without Ian. A bit hypocritical, but if the music's good, whatever.

Pemulis
12-07-2011, 03:04 PM
I cannot imagine Unknown Pleasures begin sung by anyone but Ian Curtis. As far as I'm concerned that's a travesty beyond measure, I don't give a shit who sings it.

New Order is a decent band, but they never really approached Joy Division level at all in my opinion. Still, I've always respected them for forming a new band and not really cashing in on the success of Joy Division and by association the tragic death of Ian. Which is why I find it odd that Peter Hook is now doing just that.

Piko
12-07-2011, 03:09 PM
Have they ever played any of the Joy Division songs live? Maybe it's a cash in, or maybe he geniunely missed those songs.

Pemulis
12-07-2011, 03:36 PM
If it's simply a case of missing the songs, which I can understand, why not just play the songs with friends in private? If it's a matter of just enjoying to play that material, why does he need to have a crowd there and charge money for it?

I don't know, I just find it pretty sleazy. I felt the same way when Alice In Chains reformed with their new singer. It's especially repellent in these two cases to me because both singers ended up succumbing to the personal demons that were described to varying degrees in their lyrics. Having someone else sing lyrics that discuss Curtis' inner turmoil and epilepsy or Staley's battles with addiction just seems wrong to me.

What's funny to me in the case of Alice In Chains is that Jerry Cantrell wrote most of the lyrics for AIC, Layne only wrote the lyrics for a couple songs, so it would be very easy to just not play Man In The Box but nope, the paying customer wants it so they're going to play it.

Piko
12-07-2011, 03:46 PM
Yeah, I guess it is kinda weird for someone to be singing Ian's words.

for those craving more of the joy division sound, there are a slew of bands that sound similar from that era and deserve your equal attention. try these guys on for size:

joy of life (track: 'standing')
early modern english ('16 days', mesh & lace LP)
the chameleons (first two records esp.)
the sound (from the lion's mouth)
early death in june (fields/the calling/she said destroy)/above the ruins/sol invictus/sixth comm (ie, any early DIJ offshoots)
early fra lippa lippi ('a moment like this')
diaframma (siberia)
soft kill (new band)
twisted nerve
sombre septembre (2 7''s)
venus in furs ('that first wild kiss' & 'in my velvet cage')
humour malade

etc. etc. etc. i'm an avid collector of all things post-punk, so get at me if you're interested in hearing more.

totally forgot about siglo xx, but seconded! 'art of war' is a jam (and sounds a HELL of a lot like 'love will tear us apart'), and some of their mid-period records are hauntingly similar and just bleak.

also try out the wake, but make sure you're checking out the UK version on factory instead of the US sisters of mercy ripoffs from the 90s. the first record especially sounds like movement, only less muscle (try 'judas'). a lot of the factory bands are worth listening to, especially as most of them sounded like joy division (royal family and the poor/the wake/the names/crispy ambulance) or new order (shark vegas, section 25 also featured production from bernard sumner).

edit: and also the trees! kind of a mix of scott walker/joy divison. produced by lol tolhurst of the cure. works as well as you think it would.

So I've just learned that Pictures On My Mind was rehearsed at least twice, two times at one session, and a recording of that session (including other interesting stuff such as Stephen Morris singing) had surfaced (e.g. http://norecordshopsleft.blogspot.com/2010/02/joy-division-warsaw-pictures-on-my-mind.htm (http://norecordshopsleft.blogspot.com/2010/02/joy-division-warsaw-pictures-on-my-mind.html?showComment=1329723143121#c2823882206102 095573)l)

However Hooky took exception and that blog (and many others) have taken down that session. Hooky is now selling two Pictures On My Mind "demos" at MP3 320kbps, 99p UK for the pair, all proceeds to a charity.

What's not clear is the provenance of any of these, 320kbps seems mighty high for a tape rip, I wonder if it's a re-encoded MP3 at a higher rate?

I don't mind throwing some money at a charity for two curiosities, but it's a shame the rest of that session is now harder to find.

Btw, please check out this discussion I just started regarding Hooky Vs. New Order Now:

http://www.neworderonline.com/Forums/MessageList.aspx?ThreadID=50744

Right then,

Right now it's 1:46 am, humid as all hell and I can't sleep, and with impending New Order gigs (and the potential to pose some questions to the band), along with seeing Hooky again in April, I thought I'd share my thoughts from everything I've seen and read since 2007.

I rarely, if ever, comment upon the whole debacle; I like New Order, I like Hooky, I like Bad Lieutenant, and their personal affairs don't really matter to me, but given the facts of future events just around the corner, I think it's worth having a little think about. For me personally at least.

From what I've gathered (and I'm taking all of this from memory from a vast array of very public interviews posted over the last few years), it started out with Hooky leaving the band. Then we had comments by Bernard saying that it was like a marriage gone sour; things like Hooky "licking his fingers after eating potato chips while having his hands on the steering wheel of the car," and things like that gave him the shits.

Then we hear comments from Hooky saying things like how he really liked Bad Lieutenant and wished Bernard and the other guys all the best. Then, weeks later, stating that he would fuck them over in any way he possibly could.

Then we hear comments from Hooky saying that "it's a real shame," given their legacy and history, while in other moments he has made comments that make him sound entirely relieved to be away from any of the ex-bandmates and is looking to the future (back then, to Freebass, etc).

So, really, all of this constant, CONSTANT hot/cold/hot/cold/hot/cold leads me to believe that it all really did boil down to one specific event or incident... something which I recall Bernard hinting at in one of the many interviews at one point but never elaborating upon.

So, can we pinpoint what it might be? In one vein we hear solemn regret and well-wishes from Hooky towards Bernard and co., even to Bad Lieutenant, and then the next it's all about lawyers and not being invited to play as New Order. Yet, he goes out and plays Joy Division material.

So, coming from the most rational and well-read perspective that I can, I'm really trying to determine what all this initially stemmed from. What one thing happened for all of this hypocrisy to take place? Hooky was happy to help out in getting the Lost Sirens' released, and that new compilation with Hellbent on it, AND the (albeit shitty) Rhino remasters. So there are good spirits there. There have been good spirits everywhere, in fact, until a week or so later the dissing resumes (i.e. towards Gillian), and the shit hits the fan once again. Then weeks later, based upon precedent, things seem far more mature and level-headed again, and Hooky is once more praising Bernard and co. in a roundabout way, although sometimes even directly.

So having said all that (and please read it all before commenting; I rarely make long posts on here, and I feel this is all very relevant given the fact that they'll all be here in the next two months)... what do you think it all boiled down to? What's with the total hostility - back to being civil - back to hostile attitude?

Please let me reiterate that I adore all members of the band and am in no position nor want to diss any particular member. This is all out of sheer curiosity because of the vast amounts of different testimonies I've read from all parties involved. It's really quite fascinating actually; if you piece it all together, none of it all really makes sense. That's why I feel like it all comes down to some old, fleeting incident that left a bad taste, and instead of addressing it directly it's all become this big massive pile of redundant shit that means nothing, and nothing but well wishes are what truly lie beneath the surface of it all. Either that, or it's one hell of a publicity stunt.

Replies thoroughly welcomed and encouraged!

I'll end on a lyric: "Where will it end?"

Wow that's a long post :-) I really don't feel like registering at NOO (a site which I have a mild love/hate feeling towards), but my opinion is everyone concerned just needs to move on, us included.

Which reminds me. I think we need a ninwiki like thing for JD/NO, but also for other groups such as the Cure and Numan etc. I can't find anything which seems to offer that at the moment (but NOO has a reasonable song-ography which is why you reminded me of this).

What do you think? Should we set one up?

If we do, I'd suggest that we self host a mediawiki instance, and I can help do that (happy to host it too, really). Wikia offer a very tempting hosting service but all the big wikis I've seen there have tried to move away after (the latest - doomwiki.org); and whilst wikia have helped with data dumps it's been a painful experience and split the community, and the older one doesn't go away... so we'd be better off starting elsewhere. Assuming this hasn't all already been done.

I saw Joy Division once, a month before Ian Curtis commited suicide, yes im that old. I was 16 going on 17. In Derby, there is a low quality bootleg of it. I didnt realize their greatness at the time.
I do remember people badmouthing the singer before the gig saying he was a creep and weird, and that he had been pervy and agressive to some of my friends.
He was not very nice apparently.
I had heard and liked Unknown Pleasures but it was the track Transmission that got me going. That was the only song i wanted to hear them play. I wish i had been more aware of the material in order to appreciate it more at the time. I remember it was one of those gigs where every song you hear is great. And you leave wanting to get into more of the bands material.
They played at the local Punk club where everyone used to come through. Which i used to go to multiple times a week. Saw hundreds of bands there between 1978 and 1982.
They were not seen in the way they are now back then, they were seen as a bit more hip and challenging and weird compared to the other groups. I was more into Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Slits and the Ramones...had not started to properly immerse myself in the more arty post punk stuff like Throbbing Gristle, Wire, Cabaret Voltaire till not long after this gig.
But seeing Joy Division is the proudest I WAS THERE moment.
I have seen New Order about 10 times over the years.

Sydney - New Order + Peter Hook Gigs: Before / After

So, here is the plan: Leave work 3pm this Wednesday and go straight to venue. Have all 3 batteries charged for the HD camera, get a front row standing spot and record entire gig with fantastic close-ups as I've previously done with Gary Numan, NIN, etc. Taking the sleeves for Brotherhood (favorite New Order album), Substance and WFTSC with me (the latter more for Phil Cunningham if I meet him, as he only played on that album and Get Ready in 2001). Got my sharpies. Got my shit prepared. The VIP seating for the festival on Saturday sounds really nice, too. Have a read.

//

Regarding the Peter Hook Q & A and subsequent gig for "Closer," they SAY "5 items signed," but Gary Numan signed a ton more than that for people when I saw him, so I'm taking extra vinyls just in case. Plus the set list and photo with Hooky from 2010 to see if he remembers me!

//

So meeting Hooky again is a given (got the VIP package), but I have my fingers, toes and balls crossed that I get to have a drink, take photos and have those New Order sleeves signed by Bernard, Gillian, Steve and Phil after the show, or in the interim between then and the Saturday festival.

//

Note: this album will be constantly updated until after the final show with Hooky on April 14. Wish me luck!

Very long story short (I'll elaborate later): entire gig filmed from the front, middle.

Met the band afterwards, got autographs and videos of me and Bernard and Stephen talking, photos with all current band members. Will upload everything in the next day or two.

Holy shitballs! Then just got my Hooky meet and greet package in the mail for Closer with the laminate, etc.

Didn't get a set list sheet, but when I went backstage Stephen let me take one off the wall.

I'm truly blessed. And still have Gillian's lipstick on my left cheek...

Highlight of Bernard's banter last night before 1963: "What's your name? Speak clearly. One at a time so I can hear you properly. Ok, you first. 'Fuck off you pommy bastard?' Ok, you next. 'Give your love to Robert Smith?' Will do! Oh, I know what you're saying, we're playing with The Cure, aren't we? Well, not 'playing' with them, not like Michael Jackson used to. What's your name? Gianni? Are you Italian? Ok, I'll say hi to Robert Smith for you."

At one point during Crystal the very happy-looking (ha) security guard asked me if the camera recorded video. I said yeah, and takes photo.. (um?), and he said photos can only be taken. So I said "ok!" and pretended to be snapping photos the whole time while I was actually recording.

Here's something funny I forgot to mention: after I gave Gillian the big wrap-around hug photo, she walks up to me and Bernard while we were sitting down and goes "Ryan, give him the "special pose"!", so I wrapped my arms around him and she took a photo with her phone or camera. I have no idea where that photo will turn up. LOL

Also, Stephen Morris took those photos of me and Phil Cunningham. Lovely bunch of people, so bloody nice.

The First Time I Heard Joy Division / New Order is Part I in an ongoing series where musicians and writers tell their stories of first hearing the music of an iconic artist or band. In this first volume, forty-five different musicians and writers remember their initial experiences hearing the seminal post-punk UK band Joy Division and/or its offshoot, New Order.

Contributors to the Joy Division / New Order edition include musicians such as Adam Franklin (Swervedriver); David Lewis Gedge (The Wedding Present); Emma Anderson (Lush); Aidan Baker; Lou Rhodes (Lamb); Christophe Den Tandt (The Names); Pieter Nooten (Clan of Xymox); Brian Thornell (Earlimart, One Way Driver); Count (Halou); Mark Refoy (Slipstream, Spiritualized); Shane Butler (Quilt); Mia Clarke (Electrelane); David Hawes (Catherine Wheel); Matt Kadane (Bedhead, Consonant); Matt Elliott (The Third Eye Foundation); Mike VanPortfleet (Lycia); Thomas Meluch (Benoit Pioulard); Ari Neufeld (Breathless); Morgane Lhote (Stereolab); Matt Jencik (Implodes); Ben Mullins (Midwest Product); Philip King (Lush, The Jesus & Mary Chain); Dexter Tortoriello (Houses); Tim Keegan (Robyn Hitchcock); Steve Hovington (B-Movie); Matt Keppel (Microfilm); Henry Frayne (Lanterna); James Chapman (Maps); Greg Bertens (Film School); Steve Elkins (The Autumns); Jon Attwood (Yellow6); Mark Beazley (Rothko); Nigel Humberstone (In the Nursery); Dawn Smithson (Jessamine); and writers like James Greer (also onetime member of Guided By Voices); Mitch Cullin; Sylvia Sellers-Garcia; Ben Kopel; Alistair McCartney; D. Travers Scott; Mark Gluth; Ian Johnston; Daniel Allen Cox; Jaime Clarke; and Sheri Joseph.

The "First Time I Heard" book series is edited by Scott Heim, a novelist (Mysterious Skin, We Disappear) who is also a longtime music fan. Other installments in the series (or those forthcoming soon) include books on David Bowie, The Smiths, Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, R.E.M., Kraftwerk, My Bloody Valentine, Abba, Roxy Music, The Pixies, and others.

Was going to post this when it was still in Kickstarter phase, but completely forgot about the project (which I pledged to) until I got the email today to redeem my copy. Definitely worth checking out. Cant wait for the rest of the series!

A reason why i and many many others have always found Ian Curtis voice so fucking powerful is because it sounds like he is trying to convey strength with his deep monotone voice. Rather than being nihilistic and just screaming. It does not sound like he is wallowing in self pity.

Its a typical British reserve thing, to show emotion or pain is a sign of weakness. Sounds like he is trying really hard against the odds to be strong.
But he just cant do it.
You can hear the struggle. Only 23 years old!

Unknown Pleasures is such a powerful thing its like Martin Hannet captured and framed something too great to be called just music.

Not to be a hippie but........Music is a mysterious thing, always found it an encapsulation of something bigger than human logic or 'me'. This record from the album cover to the production really really taps into something else. Somewhere else. It goes places.....that not many other records since 1979 have been able to.
With Unknown Pleasures and this band EVERYTHING came together.

Same here. Even among the more catchy pop stuff that the band did, I've always preferred songs like Disorder, Transmission.

I'll bet a lot of it's just cause "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is a really iconic title/lyric. I had a class with a girl who wore a JD tshirt with that song title written across the front, so I asked her one day which joy division album was her favorite and she was like "uh, who?"....She said she only bought the shirt cause she thought it was a cool phrase, didn't even know it was a song.

Bernard Sumner on Joy Division Book: "One Day The Truth Will Come Out" added 05 July 2012 at 17.06
http://img.mediaspanonline.com/5893/4955842.jpgThe guitarist has been speaking to Xfm about former bandmate Peter Hook's new book about their old band…

Peter Hook has announced he's to release a new book – a memoir called Unknown Pleasures – Inside Joy Division – on October 1. It charts the band's "friendships, fall outs and camaraderie" and is the bassist's second book after The Hacienda – How Not to Run A Club.

Speaking to Xfm backstage at Open'er Festival in Poland last night his former Joy Division and New Order bandmate Bernard Sumner was very hesitant to express opinion on the subject, telling Xfm's Chloe Aust, "I've got to be very careful about my answer, it's important."

"He was in Joy Division so he has a right to write the book…." the New Order frontman continued, "But he's a very opinionated person and quite a lot of the time his opinions are wrong – so I'd be very wary of that book."
When asked if he would ever consider writing his own memoir – addressing the Joy Division years as well as his later success with New Order he responded:
"Eventually the truth always comes out doesn't it? One day the truth will come out."
New Order performed an incredible set, closing the first day of Heineken Open'er festival in Gdynia in Poland with a set of New Order classics and Joy Division's finest songs – closing with a crowd rousing performance of Love Will Tear Us Apart.
Listen to our full interview with Bernard, Tom and Phil from New Order – including their love for festivals, their advice for younger bands and their thoughts on Peter Hook's new book below:

http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/2012/09/17/new-order-recording-new-album/

Bernard Sumner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Sumner) previously has hinted that New Order (http://www.newordernow.net/) — which reunited last year without bassist Peter Hook (http://www.peterhook.co.uk/) — may write new music, but now he’s talking about it in detail for the first time, telling interviewers that the band will meet early next year to begin writing new material with an eye on making an “electronic synth album.”
In interviews with Mixmag (http://www.mixmag.net/words/news/new-order-plan-new-album) and BBC’s 6Music (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00ynvdd) in advance of New Order’s appearance at Bestival (http://www.bestival.net/) over the weekend, Sumner said the band — also featuring Stephen Morris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Morris_%28musician%29), Gillian Gilbert (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gillian_Gilbert) , 2000s-era guitarist Phil Cunningham (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Cunningham_%28rock_musician%29) and Bad Lieutenant (http://badlieutenant.net/) bassist Tom Chapman — plans to reconvene after Christmas to begin hashing out new music.
Sumner tells Mixmag in the video posted above: “We’ve not had time to do it this year as we’ve played so many gigs, but next year we’re not going to play so many, so we’ll do it then. I think I’d like to make an electronic synth album as the last few that I’ve done have been guitar albums.”
He couched it a bit more to 6Music (via NME) (http://www.nme.com/news/new-order/66146): “We’ve not decided yet, but from what we’ve seen from traveling around the world is that people want to hear some new stuff. Speaking to journalists and speaking to fans, they seem to really want to hear some new stuff. We won’t play live as much next year, maybe half the amount we’ve done this year, and we’ll write some new stuff.”
New Order’s last album was 2005′s Waiting for the Sirens’ Call (http://www.amazon.com/Waiting-Sirens-Call-Bonus-Track/dp/B0007WFYD4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314683266&sr=8-1). Last year, Hook told Slicing Up Eyeballs (http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/2011/08/30/new-order-waiting-for-the-sirens-call-outtakes-to-be-released/) the band would release a mini-album’s worth of outtakes from those sessions, and the Lost Sirens set even appeared on Amazon.co.uk with an initial December release date. Since then, the release has been tied up in a dispute between the former bandmates, although one track, “Hellbent,” surfaced on a new best-of last year.
Next month, New Order returns to the U.S. for its first tour in seven years (http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/2012/08/02/new-order-new-york-mexico-city/).

Saw Peter Hook and the Light do "Unknown Pleasures" last Friday plus some rarities. Off-album highlights for me were No Love Lost; Twenty-Four Hours and Transmission. Fun times had by all. VERY small crowd though. I've never seen Newcastle's O2 Academy that empty before.

I think LWTUA is the best "summary" JD track there is.

As in it summarises their sound? Have to disagree... it sounds nothing like the echoey, bassy cavernous sound & haunting baritone of the first LP, and doesn't sound as dry, desperate & sparse as the 2nd . TBH I always thought that song is a bit of an oddball in their catalogue & wonder why it's so big... surely Shadowplay and Digital kick the crap out of it

I kinda assumed more as in, it's good in summer? maybe.

i think it's a fucking brilliant track as well. i know it's the default 'go to' JD track, but the lyric is incredible. i wouldn't really say it was my favourite JD tune or anything, but I also wouldn't say it was anything less than outstanding.

I posted a cover of it in this post (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/threads/113-Joy-Division-New-Order?p=19039#post19039) which takes the bounce out of the music and leaves the lyric exposed...

Lost Sirens currently about half price on Amazon MP3 (UK at least) - £3.99. Streaming at http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/new-order-unearth-rarities-on-lost-sirens-premiere-20130111

I took a look at the +- CD boxed set which has been reissued and is not too expensive - ~£25-£30. Sadly it's not all that great. Various reports that the CD sleeves are printed poorly or on bad paper or both. The 10th single is not a real one (two tracks from Closer), a missed opportunity to put the RSD Ceremony/In A Lonely Place single in there instead. The only track I don't already have on there, as far as I can see, is the original pennine studio LWTUA recording, absent from Heart and Soul. The 7" box is more interesting but too expensive (both at release price of £75 and second hand prices of ~£115 imho)

I'd love the +- release on a single disk (or does it need two to fit...?). It'd be nice to stick it in the CD player and just leave it, but I'm not faffing about with 10 discs for a couple of tunes each.

But with a Cd release surely 99% would rip once and forget anyway. The 10 cd singles are a bit egregious but it at least gives some weight to the sleeve art, even if that's undermined by the print quality.

Anyone got thoughts on lost sirens? Nothing jumping out at me so far.

So when my dad walked up to me with his latest copy of "The Wall Street Journal" today and told me, "I think I've found something in here that might turn you on...," I quite naturally balked at the idea until he followed it up with pretty much the last thing I'd expect to hear him to say after that, "...have you ever heard of an outfit called 'Joy Division'?"

A Blindness That Touched Perfection

What it feels like to be young, stubborn, stupid
—and making unforgettable rock 'n' roll.

By MICHAEL AZERRAD (http://online.wsj.com/search/term.html?KEYWORDS=MICHAEL+AZERRAD&bylinesearch=true)

Many rock bands have portrayed angst in their music but few have embodied it with such bracing, profound clarity as the iconic postpunk band Joy Division. The band existed for less than three years, from January 1978 to May 1980, producing two quintessential albums and a scattering of non-LP singles (including the classic "Love Will Tear Us Apart") that would influence countless bands, from U2 to Interpol. It is some of the most darkly sublime rock music ever made, a visionary alloy of dank, postindustrial northern England and the digital future, alchemizing beauty out of alienation, despair and decay.

Unknown Pleasures

Getty Images Boys from Manchester Author Peter Hook (second from right) and his mates in Joy Division in 1979, the year that the band released its debut album.

The thing is, it wasn't an act. Joy Division's redoubtable mystique was both tainted and heightened in sadly time-honored rock fashion: On the eve of the band's first American tour, lead singer Ian Curtis hanged himself in the kitchen of his modest little home in northern England, leaving behind a wife, a baby, a mistress, a band—and one of the most impeccable legacies in rock music.

"Unknown Pleasures" is Joy Division bassist Peter Hook's tragicomic account of the rise and fall of his former group. Mr. Hook tells a raffishly charming and, in the end, heartbreaking story, full of the burning ambition and abject blundering that accompany any band's road to glory. "I'm a working-class yobbo," he declares, and he delivers proletarian pragmatism in an affable tone dosed with British slang and copious cussing. Yobbos, it turns out, can make revelatory, enduring art.

To his great credit, Mr. Hook doesn't revise his life story in retrospect, and his candid, plain-spoken approach is a valuable complement to previous portrayals of the band: two romanticized biopics (Anton Corbijn's "Control" and Michael Winterbottom's "24 Hour Party People"), a profound film documentary (Grant Gee's "Joy Division") and the gloomy but potent memoir by Curtis's widow, Deborah ("Touching From a Distance")—as well as 30 years' worth of cerebral critical appreciations by outsiders.

Mr. Hook and his childhood friend Bernard Sumner grew up in Salford, a borough of Manchester—once the cradle of the industrial revolution but, by the mid-1970s, a decaying shell. It was amid this forbidding landscape that, on a lark, Mr. Hook, Mr. Sumner and their friend Terry Mason attended a June 4, 1976 performance by a scandalous new band from London called the Sex Pistols. (The show has passed into legend: Also in the audience of 40 or so were Steven Morrissey, Mark E. Smith and Pete Shelley, who soon founded the Smiths, the Fall and Buzzcocks, respectively.) On the way home, the friends decided to form a band, undeterred by the fact that Mr. Hook didn't play a musical instrument. That was the germ of Joy Division. "We were just dead working-class," Mr. Hook writes, "and had no pretensions."

They eventually picked up a 21-year-old singer who did: Ian Curtis. "He had 'hate' written on his jacket in orange fluorescent paint," Mr. Hook writes. "I liked him immediately." They went through two drummers before inducting Stephen Morris, who "dressed like a geography teacher" and lived with his overprotective parents; at one point in the book he gets a cold and his mother locks away his drums so he can't rehearse. (Mr. Mason became the band's long-suffering tour manager.)

Mr. Hook vividly recalls anecdotes about the petty but fierce rivalries in the Manchester punk scene, the band's inglorious dues-paying, and an inordinate number of shows that descended into sometimes spectacular violence. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the complexities of life and art than the fact that a history of Joy Division is often laugh-out-loud funny. They check into a sketchy hotel in Antwerp, Belgium, and gradually realize it's a brothel; Mr. Morris accidentally takes a quintuple dose of LSD and threatens to kill everyone in the band with an ax; their end-of-tour prank on the Buzzcocks involves mice, maggots, shaving cream and eggs. Along the way, the story intersects with a pantheon of punk and postpunk greats such as the Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, and the Undertones.

The four yobbos eventually find a coarse but brilliant manager: Rob Gretton, "a larger-than-life us" who seemingly communicated entirely in f-bombs. One of Gretton's masterstrokes was ordering Mr. Sumner and Mr. Hook not to speak at interviews. "He didn't do it to create a mystique around the band but because he thought we were a couple of cretins," says Mr. Hook. "Absolute genius." Joy Division album art never included the band members' faces or even their names. The iconic photographs of the band show them at a distance, sometimes with their backs to the camera (partly because, as Mr. Hook cheerily notes, they were "a bunch of ugly bastards"). A mystique quickly began to accrue around them and their ineffable music.

The band's artistic power came down to intuition, dumb luck and unintended consequences. Famously, Mr. Hook played in the higher registers, making the bass a lead melodic instrument, not only establishing a mainstay of Joy Division's sound but pioneering a staple of postpunk music. But according to Mr. Hook, this distinctive style only came about because his faulty bass amp couldn't handle low notes. As it happened, his melodic approach perfectly complemented Mr. Sumner's elliptical guitar playing. And while the band created songs by improvising, they rarely recognized their best riffs. Instead, Curtis pointed them out and had the band flesh them out into full-fledged arrangements.

That intuitional approach extended to their career as well. Driven by punk's iconoclastic, do-it-yourself ethos, not to mention sheer Mancunian feistiness, Gretton and the band made the then-radical decision to build a following in dowdy Manchester rather than London. And rather than sign with a big label, they chose complete artistic freedom on the fledgling Factory Records. Factory eventually became a major pop cultural force and a keystone of Manchester's renaissance, turning the city into a global template for the transformational powers of the creative class.

Throughout, Mr. Hook blithely notes the fascinating disconnect between the band and their art. Joy Division recorded their first album, "Unknown Pleasures," in the spring of 1979 with the mercurial, cantankerous and autocratic producer Martin Hannett, a genius who radically altered the band's punky roar, building a sonic temple of pristine reverberation, edged with sounds of breaking glass and field recordings of ominously humming machinery. It's deeply foreboding music, and yet Mr. Hook writes of the sessions, "We were focused and relaxed and enjoyed the wonderfulness of being young and in a band." And while U.K. music paper NME immediately hailed "Unknown Pleasures" as an "English rock masterwork," Mr. Hook quite forthrightly admits that he didn't initially care for the way it turned out.

Mr. Hannett stripped Joy Division's music to its essence: the sleek modernity of Kraftwerk, the dissolute incantations of Berlin-era Iggy Pop and David Bowie, the glacial, doomy riffs of early 1970s Black Sabbath. Curtis, only 22, sounded like a man peering into the abyss, not with horror but with sorrow; as eminent Manchester music journalist Paul Morley put it, Curtis "crooned anguish." It's desolate, harrowing stuff, the music's agonizingly hollow spaces a metaphor for the yawning spaces between people, or perhaps between the derelict Brutalist tower blocks of late 1970s Manchester—spaces that are, paradoxically, confining. Those unbridgeable chasms were a key to Joy Division's terrible beauty; they were also the undoing of the band.

The truth is, most rock bands aren't like the Monkees, a chummy little gang who all live in the same house. Mr. Hook says the members of Joy Division, except for Mr. Sumner and Curtis, were never very close. Mr. Hook had a closer relationship with the roadies (who, refreshingly, play a key role in his recollections). The members of Joy Division didn't dissect the power of their music, perhaps for fear of jinxing it, or maybe because, being yobbos, they wouldn't discuss or even acknowledge their feelings, instead venting them in their music. Ultimately it is distance, not intimacy, which lends this memoir its poignancy: Most insights Mr. Hook has about his own experiences—and about Curtis—came only in retrospect, gleaned, as he himself notes, from the act of writing this book.

And so, while "Unknown Pleasures" offers plenty about the genesis of postpunk, the Manchester scene and Joy Division itself, its great strength is as an object lesson in how oblivious people can be—all too often, even friends don't recognize the warning signs of a suicide until it is too late. Sadly, Mr. Hook was no different. "I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through / I'm ashamed of the person I am," Curtis intoned on the typically bleak "Isolation." Curtis's anguish was hiding in plain sight. As Deborah Curtis put it in her book, "It was too incredible to comprehend that he would use such a public method to cry for help." Mr. Hook says he had little idea what Curtis was singing about—all but the passion in the singer's voice was drowned out by the din of the other instruments. "Who cared what he was saying," Mr. Hook writes, "as long as he said it like that." Later, he acknowledges, "Now I'm older and wiser, and now I've looked at his lyrics and worked out what a tortured soul he was."

Among other things, Mr. Hook and his bandmates failed to grasp that Curtis was genuinely in love with his mistress, Annik Honoré, an elegant, pretty Belgian who interviewed the band in August 1979. They teased him mercilessly about the affair. "He wasn't tragic Ian Curtis the genius then," Mr. Hook explains. "He was just our mate and that's what you did with your mates up North: you ripped the piss out of them." Curtis, Mr. Hook writes, "adapted the way he behaved depending on who he was with." Besides conducting an affair, Curtis was the family man, the aesthete who read Dostoyevsky and Nietzsche, the guiding force of an up-and-coming rock band, and one of the lads. "There were," Mr. Hook surmises, "just too many Ians to cope with."

"What's never really come out," Mr. Hook writes, "is the Ian we saw. . . . That's because it doesn't fit neatly into myth, which prefers the idea that Ian existed on another plane from the rest of us." It is that seeming contradiction, particularly as it pertains to Curtis, that gives back this mythologized band its humanity. Mr. Hook makes clear that Curtis often joined in the band's antics, as when he urinated in an ashtray in a Belgian hotel room and had to talk himself out of trouble after security burst in the room. Right around this time, Joy Division recorded one of their most hauntingly sorrowful songs, "Atmosphere," which Mr. Hook now calls "Ian's death march."

All the laddish high jinks stand in stark contrast with the dark problem at the band's core. In December 1978, on the ride home from a London show, Curtis suffered a terrible seizure. He was diagnosed with epilepsy and advised to rest—precisely what a touring rock musician rarely gets. But the band soldiered on anyway: It was Curtis, Mr. Hook notes, who "out of all of us most wanted us to taste the fruits of success and didn't want his illness to get in the way."

"Instead of getting together and working out how to adapt to our lead singer's epilepsy," he writes, "we buried our heads in the sand, all of us, Ian included, and . . . we just carried on."

The fits increased, often occurring during shows, triggered by flashing lights, exhaustion and the consuming intensity of Curtis's performances. "He should have rested, of course," says Mr. Hook. "And why didn't we insist? Because he said he was all right, that's why. And because it suited us to take his word for it." And besides, Mr. Hook writes, "When you're twenty-two, it feels like if you don't seize the moment then it'll be gone in a puff of smoke."

Curtis was depressed by the barbiturates and other drugs prescribed for his epilepsy, and the (apparently unconsummated) affair with Ms. Honoré was destroying his marriage. It quickly went downhill from there: In February 1980, Curtis slashed up his arms with a kitchen knife after the band returned from a tour. But, says Mr. Hook, "We carried on like everything was all right," adding bitterly, "I should call the book that, shouldn't I? He Said He Was All Right So We Carried On." They played a show the next night. "Nowadays," says Mr. Hook, "you wouldn't f—ing do that, would you?" Sadly, you might. The juggernaut of a rising rock band remains difficult to stop: All kinds of people—bandmates, crew, management, the record label—have a lot at stake. Besides having lofty ambitions, Curtis was what Mr. Hook calls a "people pleaser," and it must have been impossible for him to just step off the train.

In April 1980, Curtis took an overdose of epilepsy medication that could have killed him, but in yet another astonishing display of either denial or naiveté, the band decided he was OK, because he'd had second thoughts and alerted his wife before it was too late. Six weeks later, Curtis was dead. "I look back and keep seeing where we should have stopped. It's the part of doing this book that's the hardest," Mr. Hook writes, his regret practically leaping off the page.

Just about anyone who has known a suicide obsesses about what they didn't do. But, as Mr. Hook notes in a moving passage, "What's harder—what's much, much harder—is to accept what you actually did do." Still, it is hard to pin too much blame on Mr. Hook or the band—they were all in their very early 20s, after all, and northern England in the late 1970s wasn't the most enlightened time or place. "Great thing, isn't it, hindsight?" Mr. Hook remarks. As "Unknown Pleasures" shows, hindsight truly can be great. It is also heart-rending, ruthless and redemptive.

New Order to release an E.P before the end of the Year! (http://www.neworderweb.net/new-order-to-release-an-e-p-befor-the-end-of-the-year/) By Webmaster (http://www.neworderweb.net/author/webmaster/) | Published June 27, 2013

http://www.neworderweb.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/new-order-santa-barbara-18-8-2012-300x200.jpg (http://www.neworderweb.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/new-order-santa-barbara-18-8-2012.jpg)

New Order are planning to release an EP before the end of the year.
The band’s keyboard player Gillian Gilbert says the five-piece have been writing and will record the tracks in September “once the kids have all gone back to school”.
To speed up the writing process, the band – Gilbert, along with Bernard Sumner, her husband Stephen Morris, Phil Cunningham and Tom Chapman – have decided to release the EP rather than wait until they have enough material for a full album
Gilbert said: “We’re waiting on Bernard’s lyrics. But it’s been sunny this week, so he can’t possibly write when it’s sunny, but we want to do things now. We don’t want to be like the old New Order and keep everyone waiting for years, we want to be the new New Order. We’ve been writing in short bursts, so we’ll just work on four songs at a time instead of waiting another two years to finish an album.”
New Order, who have a new album ‘Live At Bestival 2012′ out now, are headlining Transmission 005 at Jodrell Bank on July 7. Johnny Marr also features on the bill, sparking rumours he might join New Order on stage for an Electronic reunion, the duo he formed with Bernard Sumner. Commenting on that, Gilbert said: “It’d be nice, wouldn’t it? You never know do you.”
“We’re all really looking forward to playing there,” she added. “We all went to see The Flaming Lips a few years ago when they did played there, so when the chance came up to do it ourselves we jumped at it. The stage is right next to the radio telescope, and while The Flaming Lips were on it moved around. It was quite a sight.”
Asked whether New Order would stay together for the foreseeable future, Gilbert said the band had initially only reunited for two gigs in 2011, one in Paris and another in Brussels, before deciding to carry on.
“We did one year, and then another, and now we’re writing and planning to release more music next year. It’ll come to an end one day, but we don’t know when. You can never tell with New Order. Just when you think the band is coming to an end, it takes off again”.

Hopefully New Order is done as well considering that all cd versions of their albums pretty much fall flat in the sound department when compared to the original LPs. Also, it'd be nice to have an official single box set collection, like Recycle.

just saw new order last night. a mixed affair. we were outside, beautiful weather for the first time all summer (not too hot and not muggy at all). we stayed back to enjoy the space and the air. the band was good- not great. barney's voice sounded better than i expected, and the guy who replaced peter hook did a fine job, couldn't tell the difference as far as tone/style is concerned.

the bad: the new arrangements of isolation (do-do-dos in the middle, wtf) and 586 (a favorite, almost unrecognizable outside of the computerized 586 at the beginning) were pretty awful... love will tear us apart was especially flat and dull. everything else was good, low end great at moments. as far as JD "covers" went, transmission and atmosphere sounded surprisingly awesome, even the vocals, so not sure what the hell happened to isolation/LWTUA...

long story short, i enjoyed the experience for what it was, but they're definitely no tremendous tour de force that i need to see again... unless they start busting out more "rare" stuff like this time of night or everything's gone green (my two favorite new order songs).

It was great. The club they played in has some distant connection to the hac (and hooky made a joke about the owner towards the start). Small, dark, loud.

Most of the tracks were really well realised. Movement worked best IMHO, but I think it's a more consistent album anyway. 586 sounded great when it finally got going. I have no love for "we all stand" but it was faithful.

I've never heard "your silent face" done right live. Last night was close but the arpeggio was simplified as usual. My fave album track but not the best live. (NO's live takes on it are good in their own way IMHO)

Truth and icb blew my socks off, as did age of consent and leave me alone.

Pre encore was the beach on tape, last song was blue Monday. Temptation was a bit flat. No confusion.

Probably the third live Ceremony in 18 months (No, hooky doing unknown pleasures; hooky
Again). Good. A lonely place a bit unbalanced.

Can't hear too well today!

Ian Curtis' Kitchen Table Is for Salehttp://pitchfork.com/news/52939-ian-curtis-kitchen-table-is-for-sale/ By Lindsay Zoladz on November 7, 2013 at 01:57 p.m.

http://cdn4.pitchfork.com/news/52939/7ea52d01.jpg A kitchen table formerly owned by late Joy Division (http://pitchfork.com/artists/2231-joy-division/) frontman Ian Curtis (http://pitchfork.com/artists/6100-ian-curtis/) is for sale on eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190959624297?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649), NME (http://www.nme.com/news/joy-division/73689) reports. The bidding began at £100 and will go on until November 13.
The wooden table comes with certificates of authenticity signed by members of Curtis' family. A prop version of the same table was featured in the 2007 biopic Control.
The seller writes, "It can be shipped abroad, but the bidder must arrange packing etc and cost themselves as I cant be arsed."
As previously reported, a book collecting Curtis' lyrics and personal writings (http://pitchfork.com/news/52326-joy-divisions-ian-curtis-lyrics-and-personal-writings-collected-in-new-book/) will be released in the spring.

So This Is Permanence: Faber to Publish Ian Curtis Lyrics and Notebooks Faber is pleased to announce the imminent publication of So This Is Permanence: Lyrics and Notebooks, edited by Jon Savage (http://www.faber.co.uk/catalog/author/jon-savage), with a foreword by Deborah Curtis (http://www.faber.co.uk/catalog/touching-from-a-distance/9780571239566). So This Is Permanence is a collection of the intensely personal writings of one of the most enigmatic and influential songwriters and performers of the late twentieth century, Joy Division’s Ian Curtis.
The songs of Joy Division were born of Manchester in the late seventies and of Ian Curtis’s inner tragedies, as he battled depression, epilepsy and debilitating stage fright. Ian Curtis committed suicide in 1980, on the eve of the band’s first American tour.
Interspersed with the lyrics are previously unpublished facsimile pages of Ian’s notebooks, which throw his lyrics into relief and cast light on the creative process of this influential and legendary songwriter.
Ian Curtis was born in Stretford, Lancashire and grew up in Macclesfield. Joy Division released two seminal post-punk albums: Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980).
Jon Savage (http://www.faber.co.uk/catalog/author/jon-savage) is the author of England’s Dreaming: Sex Pistols and Punk Rock (http://www.faber.co.uk/catalog/author/jon-savage) and Teenage: The Creation of Youth, 1875 – 1945 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Teenage-The-Creation-Youth-Culture/dp/0670038377). He has written sleeve notes for Wire, St. Etienne and the Pet Shop Boys, among others.

Started listening to Unknown Pleasures last month and it's really incredible. So brittle and gloomy. I don't think it's "post-punk" though, except maybe Interzone. I kinda think it's its own genre but I don't know what to call it.

Well... if i had to call it a "genre" i would say it's "Coldwave" (genre i'm more familiar with thanks to frankie teardrop ), still the album will always be considered "Post-punk" and even "Gothic" , mostly because the context of the era it was made of...

On Topic: Lately i've been obsessed with "Ceremony" (the New Order version), Do you guys know how many versions of the song are?
I know 4 at least (2 versions as Joy Division), the New Order's 12'' Mix and the version with Gillian Gilbert as part of the band...

Yeah that's right.

Joy Division: live version on Still and muffled vocal rehearsal version.

New Order: one with cleaner sounding vocals from Substance, and a rougher sounding mix on the Singles compilation.

No others I know of.

yeah technically it's post-punk, but joy division set the template for the gothic genre and the coldwave genre without being either gothic or coldwave in practice. if it helps, coldwave is pretty much a french strain of post-punk which takes its sound from joy division and early cure records. but coldwave (aka touching pop and/or la vague froide) is generally used to describe french/belgian bands in the 80s, or is a term really icy ebm in the 90s, depending on who you ask.

I prefer the one with the cleaner vocals, i think the other version tries too hard to resemble the original Ian version and the other one is more "New Order" than it is "Joy Division"

I remeber in your "Post Punk thread" that you stablished that the Coldwave was basically an European movement, yet i think the "label" suits better to many american bands from that era... i know i'm breaking the "rules" still i like the "Coldwave" term better than "Post-Punk" (it's like saying "Grunge", just too damn general..)

I don't see a problem with selling the table as a table, but it is definitely fucked up being sold as once belonging to Ian.

Also, am I the only one who think Ian's notebooks shouldn't be published? I've never really understood why people's journals get published after their deaths. Seems to be an invasion of their privacy. I know I wouldn't really want anyone to read mine even if I died.

I much prefer the original Ceremony (described as "rough", collected on the "Singles" CD) to the re-recording with Gillian (as featured on Substance). I love how upfront the bass is on it. My original 12" is signed by Hook :)

In terms of songs with a zillion versions, Temptation is one that I can never really wrap my head around. Just about every single recorded version is flawed in some way or another. I think my preferred version is the 7" mix (on "Singles"), but it really is quite rough sounding compared to the version on Substance (which was re-recorded for Substance, afaik). The original 7/12" mix was self-produced and sadly sucks imho. Some kind of mental fusion of various live and studio recordings exists in my head which is my favourite (the Taras Shevchenko version is good, as is the one on Glasgow '06).

I'd skip Substance and go straight to "Heart and Soul".

henryeatscereal

^The version Ryan posted a few posts up is pretty badass too! the vocals resemble a bit Ian's, still the instruments are rougher i really liked it...

On the "Substance" discussion: I agree, my first JD cd was "Closer" and then i picked up "Substance", but a few days later i bought "Permanent: Joy Division 1995" comp, i liked it a lot! mostly because the sound quality, i know some of the songs aren't the original versions, but i do think the CD is a great listening experience and a good comp for starters...

I would end up buying "Unknown Pleasures" on Vinyl as my last Joy Division buy, the record is very limited in my country for some reason... it did felt odd that i already owned all of those songs, yet i needed them in a proper album format, i think it's safe to say that Joy Division are one of my favorite bands ever!

Are any of the new order reissues essential? Leaving aside the issue of the botched issuing (and I still don't know whether any given stock in shops is going to be the good or the bad ones). I keep looking and thinking, hmm half of that is covered by Substance; hmm I guess there's the long mix of Confusion, hm perhaps I don't have that particular mix of Temptation, not sure; are those extra 3 seconds on Blue Monday relevant? Most of the latter ones are all remixes, are any essential? I've heard people say the Shep Pettibone ones are. I forget whether "Evil Dust" is worth bothering about. Thanks Ryan for helping to clarify the Run2 issue (imho the extended mix is forgettable). Are the CD-1s appreciably better than the earlier transfers? The one I'd be most inclined to bother with, Movement, never shows up in my shops. PC&L is available cheapish in my local HMV, hence asking. (Although the DM deluxe editions are also in and far better value imho)

Edit: oh the JD reissues are cheap atm too, but I've never even given them a second thought. I don't listen to the live JD recordings I do have (e.g. H&S), are the ones picked out for the reissues any better?

Thanks lazyweb!

frankie teardrop

it's hard to keep track of all of the botches (though the 2009 reissues sound "fine"), but the long and the short of it is: no. they're not essential. the only bonus disc that's worth it is movement, as it collects much of their strongest work and alternate versions of essential tracks. the shep pettibone remixes ARE good, but not worth the price of the double cd package. otherwise, there's only one or two worthwhile b-sides, as new order saved most of their material for albums or the occasional one-off single. most of the mixes on the bonus discs are different than the versions on substance, if that means anything to you- though i feel like most of the substance versions are superior.

that said, the technique bonus does have "don't do it," which is an underrated gem.

i NEVER listen to live bonus tracks or albums, joy division especially (generally terrible sounding recordings). as for the sound quality on the studio tracks, i generally default to heart and soul for everything i need.

I'm glad you mentioned "Heart and Soul"!, i understand that you avoid the live tracks because of the sound quality, yet "Heart and Soul" includes a damn great concert (Disc 4, tracks 1-10, live at The Factory on Manchester, according to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_and_Soul_(Joy_Division_album))).
I really like this concert, for me it's a proof that Joy Division was a great live band too! (many people diss them and mention that they were only "studio magic"), to me this album proves that they were raw, energetic and pure feeling, Joy Division is terribly underrated as a live act...

it's not too much of a mystery to me. joy division never had the audience or popularity depeche mode did, nor the budget to record gigs properly in the sweatboxes they usually played. they were a cult band at best, and didn't really become ubiquitous until the mid 90s, and even then, it was a slow burn.

In my opinion: It was during the 2000's when you can say they became somewhat "mainstream" with "24 hour party people" and "Control" movies, but during the 90's they were mostly referenced as an "influence" and that's why the revival began...

yeah that's what i meant. the crow/permanent brought them to a more alternative audience which slowly grew as an influential band (akin to the velvet underground), and then by the 2000s, they were chic. new order was always the more commercially successful band at the time.

However the sign-up process is broken.

I've tried what I think are the other obvious candidates for places to find such a recording, like places that rhyme with "crime", but haven't come up with anything. Can anyone suggest (PM perhaps) where are good places to look?

New Order (http://www.nme.com/artists/new-order) played a brand new song called 'Plastic' live in Chicago last night (July 1).

http://nme.assets.ipccdn.co.uk/images/article/2012BestivalNewOrder02DB90912.jpgThe band revealed the track during their gig at the Aragon Ballroom, reports Consequence of Sound (http://consequenceofsound.net/2014/07/new-order-debuts-new-song-plastic/), who quoted the band's frontman Bernard Sumner as saying: "We have to write some new songs to keep this a viable band." Click above to watch fan-shot footage of the song's performance.

The band previously performed a new song during their Lollapalooza Chile set in south America back in March. That track, 'Singularity', which was formerly known as 'Drop the Guitar', was their first new song in nine years.

New Order's last studio album 'Waiting For The Sirens Call' was released in 2005, when bass player Peter Hook was still a member of the group. His relationship with the other members has subsequently soured and earlier this year he branded Bernard Sumner "twatto" (http://www.nme.com/news/new-order/75864) for touring the band's greatest hits around the festival circuit.

New Order reunited in 2011 after going on a break in 2007. In 2013 the band released a rarities album titled 'Lost Sirens'.

Great news everyone!
http://www.neworderonline.com/News/News.aspx?NewsID=1480

New Order have signed to the legendary independent label Mute, which will release their 10th studio album worldwide. “We couldn’t imagine a better place to be than working with Daniel Miller and his team,” the band said of their new home. “Mute has a superb roster of artists and a history that complements our own. In many ways, joining the label feels like we are coming home.” (The band’s Bernard Sumner had recently suggested the band might be working with DFA Records.)

Saying the move to their new label was a return to their “independent roots”, the group leave behind Warner Music, which released their last album, 2013’s Lost Sirens. New Order were previously part of London Records’ roster following their most famous label alliance, with Factory Records. That label was said to have faced bankruptcy partly due to the band’s hefty production costs: Blue Monday became the bestselling 12-inch single in the UK after its release, but its high production costs meant Factory lost money on every copy sold of the original die-cast cut sleeve. New Order now join Mute’s diverse list of artists, which includes Goldfrapp, Liars, Swans, Erasure, Can, Grindermand and Nick Cave and the Badseeds.

“I feel privileged to be working with artists with such a long, creative and successful history,” Mute founder Daniel Miller explained. “When the possibility of us working together first came up, I was invited to hear some of the new material and immediately had no doubts whatsoever that Mute would be the right home for New Order.”

Formed in 1980 following the demise of Joy Division, New Order released their first album, Movement, through Factory in 1981. Now consisting of Bernard Sumner, Gillian Gilbert, Stephen Morris, Phil Cunningham and Tom Chapman, the band are currently plotting their new album – their first without their original bassist, Peter Hook. “We’ve written eight songs already, so we just need another two,” Sumner said in a recent interview. “Then we’ve got to record everything.”

Also I was wondering if this video is from "In Sessions" Cd that can only be seen on a computer.

and what is the best live video performance of 5 8 6?

There's a new book with Ian's hand-written lyrics etc, I already have it and it looks really nice - "So This is Permanence".

I also already finished Sumner's "Chapter and Verse", satisfied too. Interesting to compare that hypnosis of Ian by Bernard and some of Ian's "war" lyrics... or that Bernard was working with something like sampler already in 1979, and much more.

Flicked through the lyrics book today, nice binding, felt the last third or so of the book was filler (especially the record labels). Haven't read Sumner yet. How does it compare to Hook?

Going to see Hook tonight if it's not a rain out. Pretty damn excited, the last tour he did of Movement and Power, Corruption and Lies was fantastic.

I can't really get into New Order. Absolutely LOVE Joy Division. But New Order, not so much. No matter how hard I try to like it.

Quoting a post from three years back because I've been into JD for some years now but held off getting into NO at all, fearing it would be too synthpoppy for my tastes. I checked out Movement and Power, Corruption and Lies last night, and while I loved Movement, with the exception of "Leave Me Alone" off PC&L I think I've hit a brick wall. Good stuff, just not what I'm into.

EDIT: Ventured farther today up to Brotherhood. Hit Bizarre Love Triangle and had one of those "wait, THEY did this song?" moments.

i've always preferred movement, low-life, and the early singles. always felt power corruption and lies was a bit overrated, especially compared to the surrounding albums and singles.

Saw Peter Hook last night. Incredible show. It was pissing down rain and a cold wind was blowing the whole time, which prompted him to say when he entered the stage, "Fucking hell Austin, it feels like Manchester tonight!"

The band was in top form. They opened with a great 7 song Joy Division set, then played Brotherhood, Low Life, and then a bunch of singles. He played for a solid 3 hours!

The unexpected surprise was they closed the show with "Love Will Tear Us Apart!" It wasn't on the setlist, and apparently his son convinced him to play it since it was raining.

If he comes to your town and you like Joy Division/New Order at all, GO.

It was a much better show than when I saw (and met!) him in 2010 for the Unknown Pleasures show, but I did enjoy that show too (it's also uploaded on my YT profile if you do a search).

He's been changing up the sets quite nicely here in AU if you check setlist.fm. He did Murder in place of Let's Go, for example, at another gig. Really wish he did Murder in Sydney!

Wait until I get up to uploading Sooner Than You Think; the guitarist (ex-Monaco) does the majority of the vocals and sounds almost identical to Bernard. Elegia is also stunning which I'll also naturally get to uploading.

just found out that one of my close friends has this (http://www.discogs.com/Joy-Division-Licht-Und-Blindheit/release/193190) (she's one of the founding DJ's of NEO, the punk club in chicago) but is thinking of selling it. the cover is VG+ and the record is NM and when i saw it i started hyperventilating and when she told me she might sell it i almost started crying.

also, i have no idea why i've never been into this thread.

so the actual audio on the versions of unknown pleasures, closer, and still is exactly the same as what's on the reissues from 2007? that's...weird. i guess it's nice that they're 180g, though. i'm a sucker so i'm probably going to buy all of them, even though i just FINALLY got my hands on a vinyl version of substance (that sounds pretty good).

edit: the ones from 2007 are 180g. so the only difference is the packaging? substance is totally worth getting, then, but the others? probably not. :|

It's kinda frustrating that there are no differences, but really, what could they do? Have mastering techniques improved significantly since 2007? Have the master tapes been recovered / something else that wasn't the case at that time, or was that mastering particularly bad? I don't know. At this point, I don't think there's really anything extra they could possibly do to enhance the audio beyond what we've got already. A repressing means an opportunity for people who don't already have it to buy it, I suppose.

(As a side-note, since the Japanese mastering of H&S is widely considered to be the best available mastering ever made, I'm always surprised they haven't used it for digital re-issues.)

The 'extras' are uninteresting to me (and describing the Pennine LWTUA as 'rare' is laughable IMHO). As a business model, they're going to continue to re-issue Joy Division until the end of time, and they'll leak out another exclusive on each reissue, or each other reissue, but the actual value of the exclusives is already beyond my personal interest water-line. The good shit has been out for decades already :)

I've been in a bit of an anti-deluxe-edition frame of mind recently. The other day a friend of mine recommended a Pulp album that I hadn't heard. HMV had it for £3, or £9 or £10 for a deluxe edition 2-disc reissue. I started to think, no doubt it's a great album. There was a market to put out the special edition. And that's not a bad price for a special edition. But it's a great price for a basic album. And at the end of the day, that's the bit - the bit in common - that is lauded.

So every time something like this happens for Joy Division it kind-of reinforces that frame of mind for me, and when I next listen to Unknown Pleasures it will probably be my UK issue H&S rip (unless I've tracked down the JPN one, and I'm still tempted to try the HDtracks release but I'm skeptical) or possibly my '07 era vinyl (don't own the original, decided not to bother tracking it down either: the '07 release is fine audio-wise) and I'll listen to every note and more importantly to the gap between the notes, and I'll think back over the whole JD story, and when the last song finishes I'll turn it off and nothing they can do now will improve on that.
