"The Cure have been re-issuing re-mastered versions of their early albums since 2003, with 1992's 'Wish' (the album that carries the single 'Friday I'm In Love') scheduled for the 'deluxe re-release' treatment in 2012....The band are currently working on a new studio album"

Hope this is accurate, and part of what Robert was alluding to as "STUFF BUBBLING AWAY IN THE BASEMENT".

Goes without saying that this is in no way official or confirmed until it's on the official site, and could be a misunderstanding on Larry's part. Couldn't agree more.

My first introduction to the Cure ended up being a lot of the rare songs on Join the Dots, due to a fluke of circumstance. In 2002 AudioGalaxy was all the rage post-napster, and I wanted to know what the Cure were all about, so I went through and clicked on every Cure song in the first few pages of search results. Of course, just about all the well known songs, album tracks etc. were screened out, so what was left was Adonais, Mr Pink Foot, Just one Kiss, A Man Inside My Mouth, etc.

Oh and Burn, Dredd Song, Ocean - those in particular stand out to me.

I was listening to the "pictures of you" extended remix and pondering on the mixing/mastering of Disintegration. I'm no expert but I feel the original album was a bit 'indistinct' and the single mixes of PoY and FS in particular are much better. I don't think the deluxe edition remaster did much to cure it. It's a bit of a shame they didn't collect together the single mixes on that reissue.

Does anyone agree?

Can anyone with an ounce more musical nouse than myself comment on the mixing/mastering of Disintegration? Is there any scope for improvement (without access to the masters)?

(Let's not even get into Entreat.)

The Cure (http://www.nme.com/artists/the-cure)'s Robert Smith has said the band feel as if they are coming "full circle" by headlining this year's Reading and Leeds Festival, despite having no new album to promote.

The band, who released their last album '4:13 Dream' in 2008, do not currently have a record contract, and Smith says they have no plans to record any new material. However, he said he'd be keen to re-release '4:13 Dream' as a double album after being dissuaded by the "fucking idiots who were around me" at the time of its original release.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with NME which you can read in this week's issue (http://www.nme.com/magazine), Smith drew parallels with the last time the band played at the festival in 1979, which in those days was a one-legged event held only at the Reading site. He explained: "It's almost like we’ve gone full circle and we’re back to the point where we’re playing Reading Festival and I'm doing it solely because I want it to be a good day."

Smith continued:


I can't see our career arc any more. I've got absolutely no idea. We haven't signed to anyone since the last album came out and the contract was up. I'm not even signed as a writer. To be really honest, if we're gonna do something it has to be really good.

I mean we're headlining pretty much every major European festival and we won't have anything released. Anyone else would be tearing their hair out. - Robert regrets not making 4:13 the double album he intended, but was "worn down by the fucking idiots around me at the time".
"I shouldn't have. I should have stuck to my guns, released a double, it would have sold the same, and it would not make any difference to anyone except it would have been a better piece of art. Whenever I go back to them I'm missing something. And what I'm missing is some of the songs from '4:13 Dream', because 4 of the songs on that album were supposed to be on this album, and 4 of the ones on this unreleased one are supposed to be on that."

- He has 12 tracks, including instrumentals, that he wants to release, but only as part of a double 4:13 album.
"I'd love to resequence it and bring it out as a double album, and remix '4:13 Dream' and charge a single CD price so that no-one's being ripped off, and then you can hear it as it was supposed to be."
"And on top of all that, The group who made it doesn't exist anymore."

- He's excited by the new songs the current stripped-back band are playing.

- This is the NME writer, Hamish MacBain, speaking, not Robert: "So without a label, or any suitable outlet for songs recorded that they feel they cannot move on from without releasing, The Cure in recorded guise are, to an extent, in limbo. Thus Robert's recent output has been restricted to select guest spots."

- He has 2 more collaborations with "dance acts" that should be out at the end of May, but doesn't name them because "it's their thing and I don't want to spoil it."

- He is open to doing 'Not In Love' with Crystal Castles at Reading/Leeds. Didn't want it to be a distraction for himself at Bestival.
"I watched them do that song at Bestival from the side of the stage, and there were many raised eyebrows and back-and-forth meaningful looks. But I resisted the temptation to burst onstage and do a guest spot. I suppose I was very aware that it was our first big festival for a while and I wanted to feel right and ready for it. I'd only turned up an hour before, and I thought, 'If I go on now and make a mess of it, it's going to upset me for the rest of the day.' But I'll be a bit more in the swing of things by then, so I might do. There's a few people, actually, that it would be interesting to do something with. Maybe between now and then I might arrange a few things."

- Robert on doing so many guest spots lately: "I did stop and think to myself recently, 'I've gotta stop doing this', because otherwise that's what I'll be doing for the rest of my career: just doing guest spots on other people's stuff"

- Robert on trying to enjoy other bands at the festivals: "Sometimes it's a bit difficult, because you find people in front are watching you as you're trying to watch the stage."

- Sounds like we can expect a Bestival type set this Summer.
"We concentrated a lot on the more well-known songs and we went down well. There have been times when I've just played whatever I wanted to play and I have had absolutely no regard for the audience, whereas now I kind of consider that I'm part of an event. I'm aware that we're playing probably to a lot of people who would otherwise not come and see The Cure. We're part of the weekend. So it's kind of dumb really not to try and play tracks that are your most accessible songs."

- Robert on the criticism he took over his "No free music" post: "I was vilified by a lot of the mainstream media - particularly online where there's a vested interest - who tried to turn it into like, ' Oh, I don't wanna give stuff away for free because I wanna make money out of it,' which is totally at odds with what we do because we often release stuff that's entirely for charity. We have no interest in making money out of everything we do, we never have. My point is it devalues the art and I hold by it. To me it's worth something. I'm happy to pay for PJ Harvey's new album. And I think anyone should be because it brings me hours of entertainment and pleasure, so why should it be the one area of life where it's free? It doesn't make any sense to me."

- Robert on the sort of new guard/old guard mentality that might exist now like it did with The Cure and Robert Palmer in 1981: "The point is: we don't occupy the same position at all. Although we're now considered an 'older band', I don't think there are many younger bands who don't have some kind of respect or admiration for what we've done, and what we still do. I think that's the difference. We're not seen as having followed some well-laid path to success. In fact, in a lot of instances, we've actually pushed things forward, and allowed bands to come up behind us. We've changed the landscape a little bit in some ways. That old guard we were up against in the late-70s, they were seen as an industry. And that industry is still there, but the fact is that it's represented just as much by younger artists. There are a number of younger acts I could name who are equally as offensive as we found Robert Palmer at the time. Who just represent 'music as business'. And that goes back to why we're doing this. I want to be part of the experience when we play, not just some performer selling my wares to people."

- Robert on fighting his "Own personal battle, trying to keep what we do as something that's pure", with regard to branding and sponsorship: "I am aware of how grotesquely out of touch I am, but I'm willfully out of touch with the modern world. It's very difficult for me to convince a younger generation that it's wrong to sell things, to use music for adverts. I realise I'm in a fading minority of people who find it objectionable. And that's just because I can remember songs that I loved being used to sell shit and I think it devalues it. It's horrible. I don't wanna think of a car when I listen to Jimi Hendrix or Nick Drake. I hate branding, I hate labels, it's all just shit - it's everything we rallied against when we were younger. And it hasn't made any difference. The corporate beast has won...but only for the moment. There are cracks appearing. There must be a generation raring to go that stick two fingers up at it all and says we don't want to be branded, and sold to in this way. It has to happen sooner rather than later."

- Robert on their first appearance at Reading Festival: "We were perceived as the enemy by the mainstream rock festival crowd. We were part of this vanguard of upstarts that were trying to upset the status quo, and there was just an element of the crowd which was really anti any band that went on that was part of the so-called new punk or new wave. Which was fine. I realised that we were seen as a part of a movement that was trying to replace some of the old guard and I was quite happy about that, because I thought a lot of them were fucking awful! Generally, rock was not really our kind of thing. So that was the first and last time we really did a 'rock' festival, because we didn't have a very enjoyable time actually on the stage. In fact, the worst part of the day was our 35 minutes on the stage."

So my friends and I are considering a Leeds day-ticket, for ~90 each plus fuel (100 miles each way from here) food etc. - quite a lot for one band. And the Saturday line-up otherwise looks crap :( I started wondering whether another festival was a better bet: I looked briefly at the Ireland one and the total lineup is much better than Leeds on the Saturday, but I can't figure out who is on what night (and I haven't even started looking at costs.)

The Reading/Leeds set ended up being 2 hours long despite the organisers saying it would be a 90 minute set. I decided not to go on the basis of a 90 minute set but on reflection I don't think I would have gone for 2 hours either.

Yep that's pretty much how it works every year between Osheaga and Lolla. Only difference is, last year Osheaga gave Sigur Ros a nighttime headline slot while Lolla shoved them in a 60 minute mid afternoon slot. Terrible idea.

Minor side-note about Mark "Flood" Ellis. I saw a few bios today e.g. http://trustmeimascientist.com/2012/03/03/producer-profiles-flood/ which credit him coming to notice as an assistant engineer on New Order's "Movement" - http://trustmeimascientist.com/2012/03/03/producer-profiles-flood/ - in 1981.

However I'm sure he's thanked in the notes for 1980's "Seventeen Seconds". In fact I'm pretty sure it was on this album that Smith christened him Flood. (however he was thanked rather than credited specifically)

i still feel like the shortened intro of shake dog shake sounds better (and i would argue that robert changed it because HE wanted it that way). i love the top because, as he described it, it's essentially the solo album he never made.

i have all of the remasters (except Blue Sunshine by the Glove) and think they sounds great. some of the bonus material is throwaway but some of it is fantastic. i also love the packaging and all of the stories in the liner notes.

I've only seen them twice live, first time was awesome (manchester move fest '04), second time less so (NME god like genius award '09) but that was hampered by many factors, I was sitting in the nosebleeders, the folks next to me were excitable, loud french people who kept lining up camera shots in front of my face, the setlist was a bit pedestrian (one song per album, more or less). However the encore (all TIB tracks) was phenomenal.

I didn't do more than a single listen comparison before deleting my pre-deluxe rips, but I've never had problems with the remasters. The only problem I have is with 'At Night' from 17 Seconds, and I have the exact opposite issue to brick-walling: the range between the snare and the rest of the song is too goddamn big! To hear the rest properly, I have to have the snare so loud my headphones practically pop out of my ears.

There's no way I'd pay, or even sit through a WMS set. I wouldn't even go if it was free. They already play the songs I like from the album, so I say stick with that.

And, it'd be kinda cool if they played some Bloodflowers. That stuff never gets played.

I like The 13th. The other songs you mentioned, not so much. Club America isn't awful, but it's nothing I'd consider memorable either. The bsides, ironically enough, are amazing. One of these days I'll make a playlist mixing the bsides in, and taking out the baddies.

And imo, I think alot of Bloodflowers would mix in well with the other stuff (The Loudest Sound, The Last Day of Summer, etc). At the very least, Maybe Someday. Think it's kinda weird that's the only album they play nothing from anymore, at all.

the problem with every album since wish is that there are a handful of brilliant songs from each era, overshadowed by the terrible ones. the exception to the rule is bloodflowers, which is pretty solid all the way through, with the weakest link being 'there is no if' (or 'coming up' if you count UK bonus). on the last tour in the states (4:13 not reflections)- i saw a set that started like the dream tour did--- with 'out of this world' playing into 'want', with the main set closing with 'bloodflowers'- so it's still on the table sometimes...

wild mood swings boasts some really terrible songs ('round and round and round' and 'return' for example) but 'want,' 'jupiter crash,' 'treasure,' 'this is a lie,' etc. are great. 'want' is especially amazing live, and i feel like i've seen it about 2/3rds of the time i've seen them, so they seem to be very fond of it too. wild mood swings is best with this formula, cutting all the crap and adding in the superior b-sides:

the self-titled could be better but really the production is bullshit... really too sterile and loud, one of the few times that 'brickwalling' really bugs me... and of course, it suffers from the above... a few great songs ('anniversary' being the standout) and a lot of crap, but some solid b-sides. i prefer 'this morning' and 'going nowhere' more than almost anything else on that album. 4:13 dream is pretty awful to my ears though, outside of 'underneath the stars'... it's really frustrating because the band is clearly capable of playing some stunners and tapping into what made them great, but the obsession with being a pop act is really kind of throttling the quality of the material.

so, long story short, i would NOT like to see a tour of just the recent stuff, nor do i think the band would actually do that. as for the next three album tours--- i've been hearing that rumor for a few years now... i'll believe it when i see it...

i didn't want to spoil it, but i had heard they were playing 'burn' a few weeks beforehand, and almost made the trip down just for that one song. i'm not sure why it's taken them so long to get around to it, but better late than never. i love that anything is fair game at cure shows (the first time i saw them, i was 17, had no idea about the 3 hour setlists, and was so psyched to hear 'like cockatoos' and 'siamese twins'). 'stop dead,' 'give me it,' and 'birdmad girl' have been making regular appearances in recent setlists, now if they'd only do a proper tour...

I would imagine they are in there for completion. At the time, there were an awful lot of terrible versions floating around on Napster, and I suppose it just felt right to make sure everything ever put out as a B-side was given a place.

In one week, I purchased vinyl originals of Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds, Japanese Whispers, The Top, The Head On The Door, KM KM KM, Entreat and Wild Mood Swings. I also threw down a wad for that super-rare Faith re-issue from 2008 with the bonus tracks. I think the only Cure LPs I need are Concert, Wish, Show, and self-titled.

I'm not the biggest fan of remixes done for their singles, but those remixes for all of the Wish singles were all amazing! Wish (har har) they could've kept the remixes good for WMS...

I loved the "Higher Mix" of High so much more than the album version. A friend had given me that version on a mix tape, and I hadn't heard the album version until I got the album. I was actually quite disappointed with the album version.

I guess it goes without saying that Disintegration is a masterpiece, I would easily place it as one of my top ten albums of all time. However there is more to the Cure than Disintegration, The Head On The Door, Faith, Seventeen Seconds, Pornography, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, and of coarse Wish (please release the Deluxe Edition). Going back through some of the old 4:13 era articles and some more recent stuff, and thought it would be fun to put together a list of songs that might be included on 4:14 Scream.

(Both of these were from 'The Cure' sessions, but said to have been re-recorded during the '4:13' sessions)

In an NME interview (http://craigjparker.blogspot.com/2012/03/robert-interview-in-new-nme.html) (March 2012), Robert said he "has 12 tracks, including instrumentals, that he wants to release, but only as part of a double 4:13 album." In that same interview, he says 4 songs on '4:13' should be on '4:14', and 4 on '4:14' should be on '4:13'. Hoping Robert will tell us which ones should be switched, then we can all make proper versions of the albums, the way he originally envisioned them.

Robert told UOL (http://craigjparker.blogspot.com/2013/04/robert-interview-with-uol.html) (April 2013) the following: "my personal favorite is the album that we're about to launch. I think it's definitely my favorite kind of music. There's a song on the album called "Christmas Without You". It's the best song I've ever written."
The song (which was said to be about the death of a close friend) was recorded during the '4:13 Dream' sessions. In this Blender interview (http://craigjparker.blogspot.com/2008/03/new-album-article-from-blender.html) (March 2008), Robert called it “one of the most unhappy things we’ve ever recorded”

Overall, the tone of the album should be "dark", as it was always referred to as the darker side of the 2 albums. However, as Robert said, he had to switch a few songs up, to give '4:13' a bit more balance, so it's not out of the question that there could be some lighter moments on this one. Just hope and pray there's not another 'The Only One' on this! :)

I just hope the production for the new record is better than the last one as I had some issues with the production on 4:13 Dream. I'm looking forward to the dark sound and hear what Roger and Reeves will add to the songs if they're involved in the re-recordings.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that The Cure did a 45 SONG SETLIST(!) at their shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London?

When I've seen them they played 3 hour longs sets, which I thought was amazing... But these shows must have been even longer.

To be honest I liked Robert's update, perhaps label interference/contractual obligations really do explain how 4:13 ended up a single side. Was it any good, by the way? I never picked it up. The band tension aspect also makes sense to me. I can't imagine how he could put out a 4:13 remix (essentially) on fiction though, if geffen have the rights. Anyway, we'll see. Surprised to see a list of canned projects that he wants to work on that are IMHO not interesting (except orange) but no wish deluxe...

Frontman says album will be a mix of brand new songs and material left over since 2008

The Cure frontman Robert Smith has revealed that the group's next album will be a mix of brand new material and unused material from 2008's '4:13 Dream', their most recent record.

Smith wanted that album to be a double, but a single album was eventually released.

Speaking to NME following the group's performance for Teenage Cancer Trust at London's Royal Albert Hall on Saturday (March 29), Smith said of the album: "There’s new stuff that we’re doing with this line-up and stuff we finished with the old line-up."

Asked why it's taken so long to release the tracks, Smith said: "Honestly? Just pure bloody mindedness. I was so fucking angry that [the label] wouldn’t release a double album that I wouldn’t give them the other songs."

The album also follows the solidification of a new line-up of The Cure, featuring Reeves Gabrels of David Bowie's Tin Machine on guitar. Smith said that the new line-up was the catalyst for adding new material to the '4:13 Dream' leftovers.

"A lot of stuff happened, unfortunately, with the last line-up of the band," said the frontman. "People forget sometimes that even when you get older, when you play music with people, there’s a very intense relationship there and when that breaks down then it’s very difficult to just pretend it doesn’t matter. The last line-up, there were a number of reasons why I felt unable to complete what we were doing. It was impossible to just get another line-up and bang out the songs we didn’t release; it would have been wrong."

Reflecting its turbulent origins, the album is tentatively named '4:14 Scream', but Smith believes it's "a dreadful title. Andy who does our covers has done a really great album cover for it, a kind of pastiche of me doing a scream, so maybe we'll keep it. It’s one of those reverse psychology things, where it’s so bad it’s good."

In addition to the new album, the band have said that they will also be releasing a series of live concert DVDs this year, and are planning on taking another 'Trilogy' style tour on the road later this year. The original tour took place in 2002 and saw The Cure headline a string of festivals and gigs in Brussels and Berlin in which they played the albums 'Pornography', 'Disintegration' and 'Bloodflowers' in their entirety. The second tour under the title in 2011 called 'Reflections' saw 'Three Imaginary Boys', 'Seventeen Seconds' and 'Faith' performed in full.

Judging by no Porl, Roger, or Reeves in the band, and by the stickers on Robert's guitar, this appears to have been recorded between 2009 - 2011. Guessing 2011 based on this first being reported by The Sun on April 11th, 2011. Articles here.

November 17 sees the release of the tribute album to end tribute albums – a 34-song salute to Sir Paul McCartney, featuring the likes of Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Kiss, Barry Gibb, Dr John, BB King and more. Needless to say, The Art of McCartney comes in 327 formats of varying levels of deluxitude, from a simple two-CD set all the way up to a box set featuring a “specially designed Hofner violin bass shaped USB with flac files of the album”.


But you want to know what the music’s like, don’t you? Here’s a very special taste, in the form of the first new recording from the Cure for six years – a version of Hello Goodbye, featuring Sir Paul’s son James on keyboards. Have a listen and let us know what you think.

yup. pretty amazing. i have tickets for the 23rd but i won't be able to make it due to poor holiday planning and super expensive flights :(.

not only are they playing all of the top (one of the most underrated cure records), the opening band, and also the trees, has been a long-standing favorite of mine for YEARS. they haven't been back to the states in maybe 10-20 years at this point, so they were worth the price of admission for me if i could have made it.

if anyone hasn't heard them before, and also the trees are a mix of early angsty cure and literary-driven nick cave. they haven't broken up- have just been releasing records since the 1980s. there are A LOT of cure parallels. lol tolhurst produced a few of their early records and singles, and there's an excellent robert smith mix of their 1989 track 'the pear tree' that expands on the original.

I'll be there to see The Cure tomorrow night. I would be really super excited except it seems hardly any time since I saw them last (London again, in March). But yes, the setlist is interesting. I can't help wonder if they will play all of Head on the Door tonight and Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me on Tuesday - I think RS did mention the idea of a (different) trilogy tour a while back. Hmm. With a show like that though it's hard to criticise, whatever happens.
Never heard of And Also The Trees before now... sound good, but not sure I'll end up catching them. Don't get me started on Cranes though. Home town heroes and all round legends.

It looks like they're just doing The Top as it is its anniversary (released in 1984), and the merch at the shows features The Top artwork. Weird that they aren't doing it in sequential album order though.

They changed it up a bit tonight, but, not much, Robert even mentioned a couple times that this was a Top heavy set.

So I did end up catching And Also The Trees - or part of their set anyway. Pretty good indeed.
The Cure were of course fantastic. I have to say I'm not that familiar with The Top so it was a bit unusual. Generally I preferred the setlist from earlier in the year when they played more recent stuff, and more from Disintegration, but this time I got to see Primary and Charlotte Sometimes which I was rather pleased about. I did have to leave early though to get the last train home from London. Left after Fascination Street I think. It's nice they play long sets, but a shame for those relying on public transport to get home. Oh well!

I wish I could be as excited as you, but after seeing them 2 years ago at Lollapalooza in Chicago, I'm going to sit this one out. I'm not sure why, but I was kinda bored silly with their performance. It's not even like they suck now, the Cure have great showmanship. They really know how to put on a show for their fans, despite how old they're getting, they still rock out til someone forces them off the stage, haha.

I donno, I guess I just grew out of the Cure. I traveled to Toronto in 2004 to see them on the Curiosa festival, and I enjoyed it then. It's unfortunate because Deer Lake Park is a FANTASTIC venue as well. Just saw a show there for the first time this past September and was impressed with the venue. More bands should play there.

Oh well, I'm happy they're coming either way. You know that weird feeling when you're looking at tour dates (even with shows you know you wouldn't really go to if they came) and you see Vancouver on the list, you just feel better knowing that acts actually took the time to schedule a show here. It's just a good feeling when you don't always get skipped over, as Vancouver seems to be getting skipped over more and more these days then they used to.

I'm in Central Florida, so while Miami is closer, my mom is a couple hours from Atlanta and could watch the kids and we could make a vacation of it, head to the mountains.
