I don't like it, the ratio of red to gold is way too skewed in gold's favour.

Hazekiah
07-14-2012, 04:59 PM
It's not even really GOLD, though.

Given the assumption that Iron Man 3 will feature the "Extremis" armor, I'm guessing they've gone with a largely flesh-toned design scheme to play up the fact that the armor is actually more a part of his body than ever before.

marodi
07-15-2012, 02:27 PM
I don't like the new armor either but I believe Hazekiah is right: it may be flesh tone to reflect that it's a part of Stark.

Empire Online has a description of the footage that was shown at Comic Con (http://www.empireonline.com/news/feed.asp?NID=34589). It contains spoilers for the movie obviously.

A lot of news came out of Comic Con this week end: release dates for Iron Man 3 (May 3rd, 2013), Thor: The Dark World (November 8th, 2013) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 4th, 2014).

I did squee at the "Winter Soldier" part. If Baron Zemo is in it too, it'll be a total nerdgasm.

Apparently, Ant-Man is happening too.

I'm not sold on Guardians of the Galaxy though; I don't think it will translate well into live action. And don't get me started about that raccoon... I would have preferred a Black Panther movie or better yet, a Dr Strange one.

You all know Dr Strange deserves his own movie.

New suit is fuglyyy.

I agree, the Mark VIII is really, really bad. The Mark VII shown in The Avengers was awesome, so it is disappointing to see how bad they've taken the next incarnation of the suit.

And am I the only one that thinks the red, white, & blue War Machine suit is stupid?

Fixer808

Nope, the War Machine suit in Iron Man 2 was cooler.

That's not War Machine. That's Iron Patriot

In the comics, yes. In Iron Man 3, apparently, it's War Machine. I'd rather it be War Machine than have it be another person who develops his own ARC reactor and suit. I think that would ruin IM3, and think the writers have come up with something a little better than that.

kdrcraig

In Iron Man 3, apparently, it's War Machine.

I don't think it is. In the leaked set photos it's a white dude in that suit, not Don Cheadle. Could be a stunt man I guess but I thought I read that the guy in the suit was one of the new cast members, of course I can't find it now.

Edit: \/ Thanks for clearing that up, I missed that article.

Wow. I love this trailer so much. It really does look that they have taken a darker turn this time around which is great because Tony Stark is so much more than the deliverer of sarcastic punchline. If I remember my comic books correctly, Stark went through a lot of shit in his life, including losing everything and having to rebuilt his empire from scratch.

And on a sillier note: I hope Dummy and Butterfingers survive the destruction of Stark's home!

i dont mind Stark being so snarky & witty in the movies, but that is not the Stark i read for years & years before these flicks. its fine though, Downey does a great job with it. I just take it as Marvel doesnt own the rights to Spiderman, so he fills that snark-void for them.

It's true, Stark it's not just a "cool wiseass" with "no troubles", he's also an alcoholic that deals with his inner demons everyday... ( as seen in the ultra cool "Demon in a bottle" storyline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon_in_a_Bottle) )
I think the second movie tried to show us that "weakness" and a more "insecure" Stark, sadly i think it was just a mediocre attempt that got lost in the plot and that's one of the many reasons Iron Man 2 sucked...
"Drunk Iron Man" has many posibilites and can be an awesome movie plot if done right; i want to watch him hit rock bottom and i want the Mandarin to make him suffer!

...oh and i want to watch "Armor Wars" in the movie too!

Apparenty that person didn't read their own article. The "sexual" pose at the end is the suit coming to him rite after he and pots are tossed around by the explosion, and rite before he is trapped by cables and the collapsing house. Also, Pots being attacked by a iron man suit is just one of those dreams we hear him mention.

I just got back from an advanced screening of this. I've only seen the first film and I didn't like it. And I'm not a fan of Marvel or Iron Man at all. Yet somehow this was really, really, really great. Miles ahead of Avengers. Everyone involved plays their respective roles brilliantly, strikes a perfect balance between being completely grounded, hilarious and epic. I've not been so completely entertained by an action film in a long time, let alone a superhero film. Never feels tired or cliched and surprised me in a lot of ways.

Just saw it. It opened in Greece a week earlier, which took me by surprise. I fucking L O V E D it. A lot of people will disagree with me, but I enjoyed it even more than the Avengers. It's the most fun I've had in a movie theater in years. I was having belly laughs the whole time. I'm trying to convince more friends of mine to see it, but most of them were disinterested, especially after I said it's, essentially, a great comedy. Their loss. Go see it and you'll have a great time.

Man I'm starting to feel like I'm the only person that didn't really like Iron Man 3. I cannot begin to tell you how much I hated that The Mandarin was reduced from an awesome villain, expertly played by Ben Kingsley, to a fucking South Park character or something. Everyone in the theater was LOLing so hard at this but I just sat there stunned, disappointed, and feeling cheated. Plus the whole thing with the kid befriending Tony was incredibly annoying. I don't know, the film just left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. Not really getting all the praise for it. Probably my least favorite in the Iron Man franchise.

I still have tremendous respect for RDJ and Shane Black but my god IM3 was not a good comic book movie. Big step back for Marvel. I'm crushingly disappointed right now. If you read Extremis this basically pisses all over it. I understand sacrifices need to be made for cinema but lines were crossed. I tried so hard to love it. I wanted to very much. But honestly I even favour Last Stand over it. Maybe Spidey 3. Definitely every other Marvel film. Shane Black just doesn't get Tony Stark. He gets RDJ as an actor, but not this character. And with that, there's obviously no way he could get any of the other characters either. Black turned the movie into one big running joke and at times I questioned whether anyone truly cared about it being taken remotely seriously. There was absolutely no fan service which is part of what made the other films cool. It was like they said nobody knows or cares that much about the Iron Man story so let's just make a movie for everyone and take tons of liberties and hope no one will notice. It did nothing to establish hype for another movie or the MCU, even the "stinger" was extremely weak. I don't know what else to say except I can't believe the early reviews were so positive. I feel like they had to have been bought and paid for, or written by people who have absolutely no investment in comics or this universe. Iron Man 2 looks like a gem compared to this.

05-03-2013, 03:07 AM
Just got back from a 3D IMAX showing. While I felt the film was pretty good overall, and I definitely liked it, it still fell a bit short of my expectations. RDJ continues to be great, and I love most of the funny stuff, but there were so many silly moments in this movie that it took away from the intensity of the movie..nothing ever felt as dangerous or serious as it should have.

Also, the whole bit with Ben Kingsley's character being an actor...that took me by surprise, and let me down a little bit. I was expecting a clear cut, badass, dominating, quotable villain (sort of like Bane), and it looked like Ben Kinsley was setting up that type of character, but then .....

All in all, I liked the movie. I don't think it was bad, just not exactly what I was expecting.

I found the take on the Mandarian modern and much more relatable to today. I'll expand on this thought later when all the cobwebs are gone from my head. The science was a bit iffy but it's a comic book movie, so whatever.

The one thing I didn't understand, and maybe this is just something I missed, was the Vice President's involvement. Why was he being arrested at the end?

AgentofChaos
05-03-2013, 10:56 AM
You may, I repeat MAY have been able to get away with that Mandarin take had Black not bothered to take liberties with every other element in the film. It completely defeated the purpose to trying to update a villain like that because when you turn Iron Man's world so upside down as they did it, it became a trite waste to time to even bother.

I often felt like this film was one long, bad joke reminiscent of Batman & Robin, with some terrible plot decisions throw in ala the second half of Wolverine Origins. I really am not sure if they could have butchered this any worse than they did. Just soul crushingly bad.

It's a huge, huge credit to RDJ and what an incredible actor he is. He has the power to make people not care entirely about anything else in the film save him prancing around having fun on screen for two hours.

marodi
05-03-2013, 05:24 PM
I wrote on 4/19 that I already knew almost everything about the movie and I was fully anticipating a lot of people being disappointed. I can understand that completely; to draw a parallel: my all time favorite book is The Three Musketeers and I've seen almost all the movies that have been made from the book and I'm still waiting for the adaptation that I will find acceptable. For the record, the 1973 version is the best yet but it's not quite "it" either.

As for this, the MCU stands as its own verse (Earth-199999) and I never expected anything from it to strictly follow the main 616 verse. To me, it's a stand alone where the writers can do whatever they want which is why I'm not disappointed with what was done concerning the Mandarin and Extremis.

Having said this, I loved the movie. Remember when Cap asked Tony in the Avengers: "Big man in a suit of armor, take that off; what are you?" This movie is the answer. It's his journey to find out who he is and what matters most to him. I loved that there was consequences from the events in The Avengers. I loved that he was forced to face his fears head on.

Of course, I totally biased: I'm the biggest RDJ fangirl in the world.

The one thing I didn't understand, and maybe this is just something I missed, was the Vice President's involvement. Why was he being arrested at the end?

Remember when Tony and Rhodey called him to tell him about the Iron Patriot being "stolen" and the President being in danger in Air Force One? The VP hanged up and did not warned anyone. Then you can see him kissing a little girl in a wheelchair (his daughter or granddaughter?) who was missing part of her leg. It is implied that he was promised the Extremis as a cure for her by Killian.

My inner nerd squealed: Yinsen! Banner (and how adorable was he? We need a Hulk movie, damn it). Dummy being rescued at the end (I knew Tony would save him).

Thought the movie was good, it did fall short in places, but over all I liked it. However, now I'm just kind of spoiled with these movies after The Avengers. It's hard going back to just a movie with 1 hero in it instead of Tony and everyone else. 1 just isn't enough anymore dammit!

Great article about why Iron Man 3's take on the Mandarin is awesome (http://www.movies.com/movie-news/why-39iron-man-33939s-mandarin-best-comic-book-movie-villain-all-time/12126?wssac=164&wssaffid=news)

I wouldn't go as far as to call him the "best comic book villain of all time" as the title of the article says but it does make very good points as to why it works.

By the way Iron Man 3 has the second highest opening ever (http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3682&p=.htm) behind The Avengers. It's already made over 680 millions world wide.

My expectations were lowered in the first 10 seconds, when the film opened up with Eiffel 65's Im Blue (dad ba dee).

I enjoyed myself but its very fucking far from what i would call a great movie, it was fun but the plot was a total mess.
I did like it more than Iron Man 2 which i struggled to remember 5 minutes after i left the cinema. It had a good cast, Robert Downey Jr i liked but i feel they wasted the legendary Ben Kingsley somewhat.
To be honest it was a really disappointing franchise. It could have been done a lot better, maybe my expectations are too high for a tentpole production? Too Rushed, Scenes i enjoyed like the plane dive and it was funny in parts just its a shame that it could have been better
I saw this in 3D and that did not enhance the experience very much at all, Prometheus was mindblowing in 3D this one didnt really do anything. Good 3D is meant to make you feel slightly sick and anxious and make you feel like your tripping out on acid, here i felt it just got in the way.

Pretty sure that's not what 3D is meant to do.

I'd planned on going to the midnight premiere with a buddy, but I had no idea at the time that I'd be doing so after a 14 hour workday of backbreaking manual labor. So I zonked out after about the first 20 minutes and mostly only caught a minute or two of each quiet interlude following a loud action scene before passing back out. So, yeah, FAIL for me! And that's NOT a bad review of the movie, btw. It's just a really GOOD review of the Glenlivet we were drinking during the previews, lol.

So I was REALLY excited to finally see the movie "again" yesterday. Even though I managed to catch some MAJOR spoilers the first time around, I had no idea what happened for probably about 85% of the movie and was really curious about how they tied it all together and wrapped it up. From Tony storming the Mandarin's palace to the end credits was just a complete blank for me, so I basically had no clue wtf happened in the movie beyond the beginning and a few brief fragments of the middle.

Finally saw the whole thing, though.

CAN'T WAIT TO GO AGAIN!

The movie was GREAT. Very, very entertaining.

I guess a lot of people are bugged about Shane Black basically turning it into one of his buddy-cop movies and Tony being out of the suit so much and the Mandarin's big reveal, but personally I thought all that stuff was fuckin' awesome.

So I guess now I have to defend each.

The in-joke homage/motifs that Shane Black wrote in kicked ass. It was pretty easy to see RDJ/Cheadle as Gibson/Glover through most of their back-and-forths. Which I thought was truly inspired, with the Iron Patriot basically being the black lawman who's trying to help straighten out the white PTSD-afflicted loose cannon, who's constantly giving his buddy shit, just like Murtaugh and Riggs in Lethal Weapon. LOVE IT. We even had a scene with a Christmas tree lot, reminiscent of Riggs' epic introduction in his coke-bust scene. Also reminiscent of the whole Christmas thing in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Last Action Hero, and The Last Boy Scout, for that matter! And speaking of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang...oh, look. RDJ loses a finger again! Well, sort of. But don't worry, he can put it back on, lol.

Not to mention the destruction of Stark's mansion! It took me a minute to realize why it was so familiar, but then it hit me. Michael Hunsaker from Lethal Weapon! Yeah, right when our protagonist is about to unravel the whole thing and find out what's really going on...NOPE. Helicopter assault on a beachfront/cliff-face mansion instead!

Hahaha, good stuff. None of which takes away from the movie, of course. You either notice it or you don't. If anything it improves the movie by making it play to his strengths as a writer/director, and I thought it was really cool to put a comic book movie like Iron Man 3 in such good cinematic company. Whether you like his stuff or not, he indisputably made Iron Man 3 a Shane Black movie, which is something of a feat in and of itself. And he did so rather subtly, really.

And why NOT have Tony out of the suit so much? All it does is hide RDJ's awesomeness and they did a GREAT job of making Tony-out-of-his-suit absolutely central to the story, so it made perfect sense. And, of course, there are obvious comparisons to be made between that aspect of THIS movie versus that aspect of The Dark Knight Rises -- especially with both being big, superhero, tentpole sequel Summer movies featuring red herring, terrorist villains -- but since they BOTH dealt with billionaire industrialists as protagonists and handled it so differently I don't really feel like its an issue. (Tony actually having a "Clean Slate" program and explicitly calling it that was maybe laying it on a bit thick and rather unfortunate after Selina Kyle dealt so much with it last Summer, but oh well.) Plus, keeping Tony out of the suit made for some KILLER action setpieces that might not have been so interesting otherwise. The choreography and suit-hopping of the movie's climax is justification enough, really. That shit was AMAZING! I wasn't sure how well Shane Black would handle the more action-oriented CGI stuff, but damn. No complaints here!

And then there's the Mandarin. He was ALWAYS a manufactured "Yellow Peril" villain anyway so I guess I didn't really see it as much of a switch and just thought of it as a brilliant modernization of the same concept. And tying all that into the whole video-savvy-bin-Laden/war-for-oil/amputee-vets/crooked-VP/Roxxon/BP-Gulf-spill/etc. thing was pretty sweet, topical, and ballsy, too.

And, speaking of the Vice President, as an '80s action movie fan I was silently cheering on the presence of Miguel Ferrar as the Veep. They didn't really give him too much to do, but c'mon! He's back in the field of man-in-robosuit movies! Sure, I'd rather he were in next year's RoboCop remake instead, but either way it's a WIN.

On the subject of men-in-robosuits, I also thought it was pretty cool to see the President of the United States in the Iron Patriot armor, lol. Nice little wink-and-nod to the whole thing from the comics, where the Iron Patriot is really President Norman Osborne, formerly the Green Goblin. And of course it was cool of them to make the President's name be Ellis, after Warren Ellis, the sci-fi mastermind behind the "Extremis" storyline from the Iron Man comics. I know Marvel owns all that stuff and they didn't HAVE to give him credit, but considering that the first and third films of this trilogy drew SO MUCH from that one storyline, it's only fair.

All in all, I thought this movie wrapped up the trilogy really well. Taking us back to Switzerland during the opening to meet the guy who saved Tony's life in captivity and to see Tony blowing him off was a nice little treat which really helped bring things full-circle, just like the closing credits montage using footage from all three films. Definitely a sense of completion and closure there. Which naturally doubles nicely as a negotiation tool for RDJ to make another hundred million or so in exchange for The Avengers II now that his contract is over and the trilogy is complete, but whatever. He's worth it. I hope we'll continue to see more of Pepper Potts, too! Seeing her kick ass as Iron Potts or w/e was fantastic. Never been too big a fan of Paltrow's movies, but she's been GREAT in these. Hopefully they'll keep finding excuses to get her on film in her cutoffs and underwear too, lol. Mmm.

My only real disappointment with Iron Man 3 was the complete lack of AC/DC and Black Sabbath. WTF. Not even a t-shirt, ffs? They were clearly trying to tie things up in a neat little bow, but NOT using ANY music from those two bands totally drops the ball on that point. Anyone know what's up with that? Marvel Studios being cheap again? Shane Black just hates classic rock? Opportunistic band reps shitting the bed? Had to be something going on there, that music is pretty much part of the Iron Man brand by now.

Oh, and the end-credits scene.

Minimalist and goofy and kind of a letdown since it doesn't really lead anywhere and wasn't even as funny as the shwarma scene to make up for it, but it was still cool. Ruffalo and all the double-entendres MORE than make up for it, lol. Banner doesn't have the "temperament," and Tony-minus-the-ARC-reactor says he just had to "get that off my chest and put that out there."

Haha, nice.

I loved Iron Man 3. It had me on the edge of my seat and had me laughing at all the jokes. It has me really excited for Phase 2 and I'm looking forward to The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy the most. Also the only thing that let me down was the ends credit scene. Hopefully the next end credits scene will be better. Also this: Spoilers kinda
