Bridesmaids I do think it's a good movie but an overrated one. There were things about that I didn't like. I think the tone of the film is uneven where it wants to be a comedy but got saddled with Kristen Wiig's character arc where she's often very depressed at times. I like Rose Byrne but I found her character to be a bit unbelievable into why Maya Rudolph's character would be friends with her. I also felt the film was too long and the stuff involving Wiig's roommates were terrible. Especially that fat Australian chick who is not funny at all.

I thought it had a lot of potential which is why its so frustrating to watch. (Oscar recognition for the script of all things really???)

It could have been a great movie about a girl thats scared shes losing her bff because of marriage.
It could have been about a woman's struggle to find a good guy.
It could have been a great commentary on the idiocy of many things concerning weddings.

Instead it was a half-assed attempt that accomplished none of the above and the main and most developed conflict was a catty girl rivalry? YAWN. Also most of the scenes in the film were too long and overstayed their welcome with conversations that had NOTHING to do with anything else in the movie.

Drugged out Wig was hilarious though.

Christ Brave was bad. Talk about a missed opportunity. This film had no balls. Mulan was way more ballsy and interesting when it comes to everything gender and family duty related. Ugh. Great first act though. This is all coming from a Pixar fanatic. I'm really really dissapointed.

The United States of Leland (2003). I found it to be a nice little indie film, despite its flaws. Matthew Ryan Hoge tried to make a good film, using his own original screenplay. I was surprised by how negative the critical consensus for the film was. Yeah, its true message may have been unclear and lost in the details, but I didn't think it was an overly terrible film. It features one of the first theatrical appearances of Ryan Gosling; as such, it's not one of his best performances, but you could see he tried his best. And, damn, he used to be so skinny back then. He played lots of fucked-up characters back then. I liked Don Cheadle's performance as a teacher and aspiring writer. The rest of the cast were not that interesting. There were many unresolved subplots, which was a shame, because I was intrigued by the film's non-linear structure and its tendency to keep you guessing. It could have been better, but it wasn't bad for an inexperienced writer-director. He has only made two films, Leland being the second. He has been inactive since then. I wonder if he was disheartened by the negative reviews.

I didn't like that film. I found the reveal in the end to be weak and unnecessary and there were too many subplot. I liked Ryan Gosling, Don Cheadle, Michelle Williams, and Jena Malone of course. I was just disappointed by how it was handled and the final execution made it worse thanks in part to a very bad Chris Klein.

So, The Dictator, turns out, was pretty ok. The first twenty minutes or so, I was really not digging it. After a while it started to get funnier. By about halfway through the movie I was finally coming around. It wasn't great, and I'm not even sure I would quite say good, but it was decent enough.

The problem is that only about 30% of the jokes were actually funny. The rest were bad. REALLY bad. Seriously groan-worthy. Especially during the first third of the movie or so, I was really ready to completely write it off. After that it got better.

Anyway, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, but I wouldn't talk anyone out of watching it, either. For a buck at Redbox, you could do a lot worse (or if you catch it on HBO on a boring afternoon sometime in the future).

I didn't like it much. It was not up to the level of Borat and Bruno. Pretty much all of the dialogue and scenes with the scientist guy were terrible. The movie just didn't have enough laughs, and I agree about many of the jokes being shit. I liked the speech, but this was no Great Dictator.

If you have ever seen the epic "World At War" series from the 70's, and enjoyed that, you have to check this out. It gives an epic scope of world history from 1945-1991, and has much interview footage with all sorts of key players (fidel castro, robert mcnamara, bush sr., gorbecheav, ect. i could go on and on) Anyways, this is a great watch if your into this sorta stuff!

Valhalla Rising I think is one of Refn's best films. There's not a lot of dialogue but rather slow yet crushing action. It's a very brutal but dream-like film. In fact, I wrote a piece on Refn this past June that you can read here (http://thevoid99.blogspot.com/2012/06/auteurs-12-nicolas-winding-refn.html).

if we're making a list of great hollywood classics... recommendations you might be missing:

Sunset Blvd
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
All About Eve
Suddenly Last Summer
The Haunting
The Manchurian Candidate

Then there's practically everything by Kurosawa, Kubrick, and Hitchcock... Hitchcock especially has a lot of movies that people generally overlook that are fantastic. Strangers on a Train, Rebecca, Notorious, The Man Who Knew Too Much (his remake of his own movie)... practically everything he did before Frenzy is amazing.

Also, while everyone loves Kubrick, not enough people have seen The Killing, which is awesome.

IF anyone has any good noir recommendations from the 40s or 50s I'd like to hear them.

3. Lawrence Of Arabia

Ha! Sorry about that; I'm a bit biased because Lawrence Of Arabia is my all time favorite movie in the whole universe for like infinity +1. There are no words strong enough in any language to describe the perfection that is this movie.

Others from your list you absolutely need to watch: 12 Angry Men, Citizen Kane, Gone With The Wind, Singin' In The Rain, Cabaret and All The President's Men. I love every single one of these.

Also: I strongly agree with Jinsai on Suddenly Last Summer and The Haunting.

Something that's not on your list: from the Marx Brothers Duck Soup and Monkey Business; The General (with Buster Keaton); Metropolis, King Kong (1933) and Nosferatu (1922).

And of course the funniest movie of all time: Some Like It Hot.

Really? I thought it was awesome.

Man, the premise is so contrived. I tried to suspend my disbelief, but the plot just kept getting worse and worse. Plus it was narrated, which is something I almost never like in a movie. It's completely and laughably not true that we only use 20% of our brains. Even if that were true, the way the drug works doesn't make sense. You can't learn a language that fast and have the accent down without actually talking to people from that country. A lot of the dialogue was just poorly written, and then near the end they manage to nuke the fridge, which is typically reserved for a later installment in a series, but they manage to do it in one movie. Basically it was a vehicle for some neat special effects.

Yup, the Dutch Loft is a remake of the Belgian Loft, and The Loft is an upcoming American remake by the original Belgian director with - amongst a cast of fittingly hot blokes - Matthias Schoenaerts himself, reprising his original role. I love the original Belgian Loft, not so keen on the Dutch version, so I'm curious what - if any - changes will have been made for the U.S. market, and how different actors impact on the film.

Just saw Farenheit 9/11 again, and it's still compelling. I'm thinking of using the part about the Iraq war and the recruitment of youth in class, when discussing the ethics of war and justice. Even though it's clearly Michael Moore bullshit rhetoric, the facts are still there and even more than now, they hold up. And I keep feeling sorry for Colin Powell. I don't know, but somehow I believe he really thought he was doing the right thing. I find it difficult to believe someone with such a service record would willingly and knowingly send kids in to be slaughtered for Haliburton and oil.

That film had the strangest tonal shifts--from RomCom territory to the creepiest rape scene I've seen in film.

The film could've been more effective with greater character change from Dano's character.

Yea the second season really went off track.. Hiro's story was just ridiculous and too overdrawn, plus nothing really started happening until the end of the season. I will say I am enjoying season 3 right now. There is a lot more going on and more action which I have been wanting from this show. They tease you so much in the first season. So, I'm three episodes into Justified and I'm pretty close to giving up. Even Timothy Olyphant and the great Walton Goggins can't save this show. It's so fake and poorly made. It feels like this should be on CBS, somewhere sandwiched between episodes of CSI. Maybe I've been spoiled by some of the amazing shows on cable that are so well made and actually feel like you're watching a film, but shows on network TV (and, even though this is an FX show, it feels like it should be network) just feel really phony to me now. They've got this weird, artificial feel to them that I just can't get past. Justified has that feel.

Anyway, maybe I'll force myself to at least make it to the end of the season. Maybe not. I've heard it ended up becoming a serialized show and not episodic (not a fan of episodic TV in general) but I don't know if I can stick with it that long.

Yeah, the show's kinda out-lived itself. Barney is really the main "ace in the hole". Its been eight years now. Time to put it down. There's still a few funny moments, but for the most part, it's certainly lost its steam.

Per recommendation from marodi, watching the first two series of Wallander.

I hope you liked them!

This series is so amazing. It's one of my favorite thing of the last few years. I need to get the third series and I've heard that there'll be a fourth and final one. The books upon which they are based are also excellent, by the way.

I want to move to Ystad so badly!

Finished watching the extended Return of the King today. I liked it better than when I first saw it. The Two Towers is definitely the weakest of the three, but I still love the Gandalf vs. Balrog scenes.

The Mouth of Sauron is one of the creepiest character I've ever seen on film. And I've seen a lot of them.

As for myself, I've recently watched The Changeling (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080516) and its almost namesake (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0824747). Vastly different movies but I greatly enjoyed them both.

Indeed he is and I think that it's part of what's making the series so great. Wallander is a very complex character and Ken Branagh is playing him perfectly.

Don't you love how Martinsson is his favorite souffre-douleur?

I just saw Sinister, in theater.

It is far better than I was expecting it to be. There are scenes in it that I found genuinely disturbing. It's one of the best horror movies I've seen in the last few years. And I need to get my hand on the score (which was written by Christopher Young); it's one of the best part of the movie and it's truly disturbing at times. Perfect for Halloween!

I recommend this one!

Midnight Express. What a film. Some scenes are so immensely powerful simply on how well filmed they are. Up there with anything Kubrick did.

Its even better than The Shawshank Redemption. Which in my opinion was a movie for bedwetters. Word of mouth got out of hand with that one its was just dank.
This film somehow extracts beauty from Brutality, .John Hurt is now my favourite actor ever.
That actor Brad Davis was so good in this such a shame he went off the rails and never became a household name.

Totally forgot on Sanctified Trent sampled the letter scene from it. And on Purest Feeling demo there are i think a few more samples from Billy's voice.
This film seriously fucked people up when it was released. But its a masterpiece too.

Carl Theodor Dreyer's Leaves from Satan's Book. Shit, that was intense. Especially for a silent film from 1921 as it has themes that are still relevant to this day. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the works of Dreyer.

I'm in a masochistic mood lately so I (finally gave up and) watched 2012 (yes, the Roland Emmerich movie) and holyjesustittyfuckingchrist what did I just watch? No, seriously. I can't believe this one actually made +700mil. The acting was terrible, storyline was awful, "You can download my blog".. what?? The effects were.. ok.
And while I was in same masochistic mood I decided to give me another handicapped celluloid handjob by watching the 3D version of Journey 2. I can't believe I'm going to say this but here's the thing: this movie was way better than 2012. It still sucked large donkey testicles but was somehow more enjoyable than the apocalyptic extravaganza.

While I'm at it, time to catch up with the latest episodes of Crime Scene Investigation (and I wouldn't be surprised if me and Saturnine are still the only ones on ETS watching this show).

Just watched "The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye", terribly sad but strangely uplifting. Has a similarly dreamy feel to "The Alcohol Years" by Carol Morley. Reminds me of the sort of thing Channel 4 used to show late at night back when they still gave a shit.

You do feel the loss is that much worse because they had become so committed to each other, to point of getting surgery to align their appearances, etc. Gen describes it as "jumping off a cliff" together. How lost and adrift would you feel to lose someone after moving that close to them?

I love films about subcultural misfits and twilight worlds, so it hit the spot for me in that respect. So odd to see Gen cooking dinner and having a birthday bbq... not that they seem uncomfortable but it does make you think about rigidly conformist our lifestyles can be - they look so incongruous and shoehorned in to these domestic situations.

I was always more into Coil than Psychic TV & did used to wonder if Gen was just a bit of a blagger, but really this film made me think maybe he does believe in what he is doing. There's lots of arty shenanigans and cod-profundities to get cynical eyes rolling, but then suddenly things get a bit dark when they start getting surgery, and you realise that they really are serious people, their lifestyle isn't an accessory & their art is honest.

I suppose it isn't dark really, it's pretty profound that they would want to embrace each others' identities to the point of becoming one person split through two prisms, it's just such a strange expression of intimacy.

Recommended! It is out there

I watched this on Netflix one night and it was.... ok. What was missing was the comedy in general. I remember seeing the trailer for this a long time ago and it actually made me laugh, but some of those scenes were not even in the movie that was a let down.. it just was not that much of a good time. The dance off was pretty humorous though.

No, it's new and it just aired on PBS a few days ago. And I missed it. Thank god for torrent sites!

One day, when I have the monies, I'm buying everything Ken Burns has done. I've borrowed Baseball and The Civil War so many times from the library that when I go and get something else, I'm being asked if I finally got tired of them.

Nope, never going to happen.

Would recommend a powerful documentary/film called Dreams Of A Life, about a 37 year old woman who was discovered in her London apartment having been dead for 3 years.
It asks how such a beautiful, intelligent social hi flying woman who had been friends with Gil Scott Heron and met Nelson Mandella simply vanished off the face of the earth and lost contact with everyone around her including friends and family.
She died in 2003 her body was discovered in 2006. She was not murdered there was no foul play and it was not Drug/Alcohol related.
Her name was Joyce Vincent. When they found her the T.V was still on and her disintegrated body was on the couch facing it! No one noticed the smell because a huge air fan unit/thing was next to her window.
Her apartment was above a shopping Mall where Hundreds of thousands of people visit every week. She was dead the whole time above it! Chilling.
Documentary resonated with me because i used to live literally 2 minutes away from the apartment complex where she died and i know how shitty the area is.

It examines how people can just fall through the cracks and loose contact with everyone they have ever known and end up in a situation where no one knows your dead or reports you missing for 3 years until bailiffs knock down your door.

It sounds depressing but its fascinating and way better than i expected, just sort of chronicles someones journey from the peak of their life into the abyss over the space of a few years, and it looks at the impact her death had on the area she lived in. Its won loads of awards got a lot of attention last year, been meaning to see it for ages, its an amazing piece.
