hands down my favourite band next to NIN. i've seen them five or six times. a few years ago, i was dead center, as close to the stage as possible, right in front of barry's guitar amp...and i forgot ear plugs. needless to say, i literally couldn't hear much of anything for about 24 hours.

they'll be here two weeks from tomorrow and i haven't gotten tickets yet, but i'm probably going to go.

also, it's funny to me how much of the same music you and i enjoy.

They are so fuckin loud it hurts! the second time i saw them it was a small "venue" that wasn't a venue at all! (it was like a weird tent-igloo-auditorium-kind of thing) and the sound was overwhelming, when they played "Like Herod" "Batcat" and "We're no Here" i thought the fuckin place was going to explode!

We like quality music, that's why we have similar taste! :P

Here's my 5 favorite Mogwai tracks, im specially hoping for "Stanley Kubrick" played tonight:

One of my favorite bands. Can't really pick a favorite album. I feel like each one has it's unique ups and downs. They have a great discography though and are amazing live. The newest EP was a pleasant departure. They have a new remix LP coming out soon.

the e-mail they sent out a few days ago also contained this information:

Les Revanates
As you may know if you follow any of us on Twitter, we've been in the studio recently. These sessions have been due to our involvement in preparing the soundtrack for a French TV show due to be broadcast on Canal+ called "Les Revenants". The first episode of which will air in France on November 26th. Rock Action will be releasing a soundtrack album featuring music from the series in early 2013, while we're looking at doing a very limited France-only picture disc EP release in December to co-incide with the series. Expect to hear a lot more about this in the coming months.

^Nice! i really liked the score they did for the Zidane documentary, i always thought Mogwai is an awesome soundtrack band, play "Cody" with any horror movie and watch the magic!
I agree with blackholesun that every Mogwai album has it's unique "ups and downs", Earth Division was very good a bit experimental and electronic but keeping the Mogwai sound, im looking forward for a new studio release.

Oh man "Christmas Steps" is awesome! I like it a bit more than the early version (Xmas Steps)
I think all the tracks in CODY are flawless and together they form one of the darkest, yet most beautiful records i've ever had the pleasure to listen to ...at times peaceful, at times aggresive as fuck!
Like i said on an earlier post i think it's like a horror movie score, one of the most underrated albums from the 90's, wish they would perform it live entirely!

Lack of I Love You, I'm Going To Blow Up Your School saddens me (especially the day before valentines day. that song IS romance) but it really does seem to be only me who loves that song.

It's just that little one bar time signature change with the piano riff at around 1:55. Makes the song for me.

"The Hawk is Howling" it's a difficult album to listen... because of this i think it has gotten so much shit from the critics and mainstream.
Still, i think it has brilliant tunes like "Im Jim Morrison...", "Scotland's Shame", "Batcat" and (of course!) "I Love you, im going to blow your school" the song it's so tense it really brings violent images to your mind...

As for the live performances go... i've seen Mogwai 4 times and i've never heard it live (sadly), they just played it briefly on the "Hawk is howling tour" back in 2008-2009, then it dissapeared from their sets, such a shame...

pretty sure they played it one of the times i saw them...but i can't remember for sure.
the second to last time i saw them, i was dead center, all the way at the front, directly in front of barry's amp, which was, of course, louder than everyone else's, and i forgot earplugs. i couldn't hear properly for two days, but it was one of the best shows i've ever seen...

anyway, the hawk is howling is my favourite mogwai album. as much as i like their songs with vocals, it was nice to have a fully instrumental album, mostly full of moody, brooding pieces, and a lot of great dynamics. i've been a huge fan of the band for well over ten years, and i've never felt more attached to one of their albums that the hawk.

a lot of mogwai fans tend to not like mr. beast very much, which has always seemed strange to me. it's definitely not my favourite, but i still think it's a great album.

i think that "the hawk is howling" is their masterpiece, honestly. it's just amazing all the way through, and as much as i like some of the songs with vocals, it's nice that it's a completely instrumental album.

My favourite will always be Happy Songs For Happy People.. I do enjoy Mr Beast, Hawk and Hardcore very much. I find it hardest to get into their older stuff, I do enjoy it now, but the first time I heard CODY I was very...bored.. They are just one of my favourite bands, every time I've seen them live the show has been different, pulling tracks from all of their catalogue yet it always feels brand new and cohesive.
Travel Is Dangerous will probably always be my favourite track.

henryeatscereal

As i said on my first post, "CODY" is the one that always does it for me but i rate "Mr. Beast" as a close second and obviously i like "Hawk" and "Happy Songs" a lot (but i'd be lying if i told you they are my faves...)

In my opinion "Mr Beast" is the "quintessential" Mogwai album; it has all the styles Mogwai can play and it has one of their best songs ever (We're no here), but CODY will always be better for me because it has more cohesion as an album and a much intriguing concept (ar at least motif), in my opinion it's their first "soundtrack" album...

My brain still ca't fathom just what happens musically when everything comes crashing back in for that final 'cycle'. The first time I heard it I didn't even notice, but I turned it up loud on my instant second listen and wow. I can see the similarities between "Sine Wave" and "A Warm Place" but let's not forget that "AWP" it's an homage to Bowie's "Crystal Japan" and i do think Mogwai's song has its own identity, "Rock Action" isn't perfect but it has some damn good quality tracks and "2 Rights make 1 Wrong" will always give me gosebumps...

ordered my copy of the Rave Tapes box set (now available to US buyers through sub pop (http://www.subpop.com/catalog/artists%2Fmogwai%2Ffull_lengths%2Frave_tape_deluxe _box_set)) limited to only 500 copies (i'm not sure if that means worldwide or just the ones from sub pop).

the USPS shipping was going to be $18 which is RIDICULOUS because two of the three UPS options are less than $9. i do not understand shipping calculations.

i don't know how many local shops are going to end up with the box set. like i said, it's pretty limited in quantity. you'll probably be able to get the standard vinyl version, though.

Oh, this Vinyl shop brings all these kind of stuff, they take orders and specialize in rare boxsets, i got from them the limited edition of (Queens of the Stone Age's) "Like Clockwork", as long as i mention the item and pay half of the preorder to them, they can get it with no problem... (this reminds me: i have to visit them today after work...)

Off Topic: i found this cool Berlin concert, i'm playing the shit out of it when the office gets empty, mwahahahahaha...

Cool article about Rave Tapes album cover:

Rave Tapes is the fifth release designer Dave Thomas has worked on for Glasgow band Mogwai. The band usually have a photograph or film still in mind for artwork, he says, but for Rave Tapes, they were looking for something more graphic.

http://www.creativereview.co.uk/images/uploads/2013/11/rockact80lp_sleeves_labels_mockup_lores_0.jpg

“It started with a few members sending me things that they liked visually as inspiration,” explains Thomas. Suggested visuals included old sci-fi illustrations and films – in particular, Phase IV, which was directed by Saul Bass. “Of course, that source material has been used a lot, so it was about [using it] in a way that the band felt was personal to them and represented their ideas,” he adds.
Thomas looked to the recurring shapes and motifs in 1960s and 70s sci-fi films - such as octagons - and when he discovered the album would be named Rave Tapes, began researching the design of analogue reel to reel tape boxes and diagrams of wave forms.

http://www.creativereview.co.uk/images/uploads/2013/11/rockact80_boxset12inch_sleeve_labels_vinyl_mockup_ lores_0.jpg

“I started to play with illustrations that took those shapes as a starting point and went back to the band with a number of designs, ranging from straight geometric patterns to something more illustrative and maybe inspired by a loose psychedelic of semi-abstract direction,” he says. “Initially I saw it all as very much a monotone world that the imagery existed in, but the band felt that having something more colourful would capture the mood of the album more."
Thomas worked with each member of Mogwai on the artwork - which he says is unusual for a band but "allows the design to go in interesting directions that otherwise might not have been taken".

http://www.creativereview.co.uk/images/uploads/2013/11/rockact80_boxset_7inch_sleeve_labels_mockup_lores_ 0.jpg

He has created a series of designs to work alongside the central image - both the CD and LP versions come with a die cut in the front cover and interchangeable inserts which can be swapped to change the eye motif on the cover. A limited edition including a set of three art prints, a 7" laser etched disc, a pink 12" vinyl and a book of photographs taken by Steve Gullick while the band were recording the album will also be released in January.

Exclusive album stream (http://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2014/jan/14/mogwai-rave-tapes-album-stream) with Stuart's introduction:

"Hello people. Welcome to the stream of our forthcoming album Rave Tapes. We wrote and recorded the record last year, starting writing in January and finishing mixing just before Halloween. It was written between our scabby, rat-infested rehearsal space in the Gorbals Glasgow, mine and John's home studios and Barry's practice space in Berlin. Before going in to record in our Castle Of Doom studio in Glasgow (neither scabby nor rat infested, thankfully) we rehearsed together for a few weeks to work on arrangements.
The album was recorded by Paul Savage who we worked on for our early single Summer as well as our first record Mogwai Young Team and our most recent Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will. Paul was also a member of The Delgados, the owners of Chemikal Undergound Records who released our first two records. He's a great guy and very good at keeping us in check. That said I'm still pissed off at him for taping over the original 22 minute take of Mogwai Fear Satan as it had too many mistakes. We could have fixed those mistakes with computers these days! Though that might be the musical equivalent of that awful digital muppet dancing scene they added to Return Of the Jedi.
The album has ten songs and features drums (both real and electronic), guitars, synthesizers, piano and singing (both vocodered and human). We hope you like it!"

Mogwai - Rave Tapes box set. album on clear green 12", bonus pink 12" 45rpm with two tracks, bonus black 7" with etched side B, album on CD, three 12x12 prints, hardcover book, download code.
i got this version from subpop. had i known i could order it from bleep and get the album on a pink cassette (but the 12" of the album on black instead of clear green) i might have done that...

this album is fucking INCREDIBLE. the first time i listened to "hardcore will never die..." i was floored. with this album, i sank through the floor and landed in a glowing pool of light, or something. i don't know. it's really good. and the bonus tracks are all fantastic, too. now i'm bummed i'm not seeing them when they'll be coming to town :(

I have to say I'm not that taken by Rave Tapes. It feels a little samey and bland, which is not to say it isn't good technically, but yeah, maybe its a grower, Hawk is Howling/CODY/EP+6 took forever for me to find the right time/place/mood whereas Hardcore/Happy Songs/Mr Beast were instantly likeable. I do love Hexon Bogon though.

Gotta say that "Rave Tapes" (and most Mogwai releases for that matter...) it's for a determinate time and a place and the album is less "accessible" than "Hardcore will never die..." and even "Les Revenants".
I find the CD hypnotic, from "Heard about you last night" to "The Lord is out of control", the album really grabs you and in a way DEMANDS your attention but at the same time it's a strange trip, i would compare the same feeling to the first time i head CODY and i think it's accurate to compare them.
I also remember i didn't liked "The hawk is howling" when it came out, but after a few listens i came to the conclusion it's one of Mogwai's strongest works...

i have the box set! unfortunately, the 2-CD version of the album was in my car a couple summers ago (along with many other CDs) when i left my sunroof open overnight, and it stormed, so the inside of my car flooded. i replaced it with the standalone 2-CD version (which is not really noticeably different from the one that was included in the box set, other than the catalog number).

anyway, i'll take & post some pics later! the stencil that came with it is pretty cool, and i had actually been considering getting it as a tattoo for a while.

I saw them on Sunday in Vancouver. After learning from that painful experience two years ago (in Vancouver as well), I brought earplugs for this show. I've said this in the board before, I don't understand why sound engineers decide to pump up the volume to the point where it becomes painful for the ears and starts distorting the sound. However, this is Mogwai, and their loud shows are part of their trademark. I've also said that I don't like the muffled sound I get with earplugs all the way in, so what I did for this concert was to put the earplugs properly, then pull them out half way, so I was still getting some protection, achieving a "mid-noise" level that was PERFECT. This decision let me appreciate the difference between the quiet and loud sections of a song like "Mogwai Fears Satan".

I had SUCH a blast at the show. It was at the Vogue Theater, one of the best places for shows in Vancouver, it had a seated section (GA) and the pit, I stood in the seated section. They had really good looking shirts related to the Rave Tapes artwork, I got one that had only the hexagon outlines of the cover, with the words "Mogwai" in the current font. $20. Got the Earth Division LP for my brother, and Special Moves CD for myself (I had the mp3's already, but it's always cool to have the physical version, and support the band). I talked to the merch dude for a little bit, cool guy. He was actually responsible for choosing the brand of the shirts they sell, Mogwai uses Tultex, which apparently is good quality (they don't shrink).

Mogwai had a bit of a "light/stage show", they had above the stage three of those hexagon outlines that would light up in different colors, and an iteration of the Rave Tapes cover as backdrop. Simple, but very effective.

Setlist:
1. Heard About You Last Night
2. Friend of the Night
3. Ithica 27ø9
4. I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead
5. Master Card
6. Rano Pano
7. Ex-Cowboy
8. Travel is Dangerous
9. How to be a Werewolf
10. Deesh
11. Remurdered
12. We're No Here

Encore
13. Auto Rock
14. Hunted by a Freak
15. Mogwai Fear Satan

Highlights of the show: Deesh sounded HUGE. They brought one of their roadies to help out with extra percussion. And if I remember correctly, this person stuck around for Remurdered, which was also excellent. Rano Pano is one of my favorite songs off "Hardcore..." so pleased to hear that. Mogwai Fear Satan: I was looking around and there were quite a few people with their fingers in their ears, goddamn it was loud! Excellent way to close the show, I was rocking out hard (and in general, I "danced" throughout the whole set), I was surprised to see veeeery few people moving at all. I thought: "guys, look at Mr. Braithwaite on stage, he's clearly enjoying himself and dancing to his music, maybe you should follow suit?". Anyways, minor pet peeve of mine. I also wish they would had played The Lord is out of Control (would have worked great as a set closer, although Mogwai Fear Satan is not a bad choice either), or the "b-sides" of "Hardcore..." and "Rave Tapes" ("Slight Domestic" and "Tell Everybody that I Love Them"). Now that I'm talking about wish lists...hopefully some day they play stuff from "Earth Division".

The band were in great spirits due to this show being the last one on the tour, and Stuart constantly thanked the crowd, he looked really happy.

Sound was excellent (earplugs helped a lot)...to be honest I don't remember some of their song titles (because of the mostly instrumental nature of them), specially from their older albums (MYT, CODY, Rock Action, Happy Songs...) BUT I do remember that some of the older songs with the slower, quieter parts sounded BEAUTIFUL. Such a great contrast that this band delivers. Will post photos of the show later this week.

^Nice review of the show! i'm glad you had a blast and remembered to bring your earplugs, lol

Those "Hexagon outlines" that you mention sound intriguing, i wonder how they look like live, i have seen them live 4 times and i have never got a show with visuals (and Mogwai is a band that should incorporate visuals to their shows more often since their music activates the imagination a lot).
The setlist was good, you got "Ithica 27ø9", that is a rarity in their catalogue, i'm glad they are playing more "unusual songs", maybe i'll get "I am not Batman" someday, lol

I think they should have included "The Lord is out of Control" and even "Simon Ferocious", since it's the newest single...
Glad you had a great time, looking forward to see them this year already!

It was uncalled for, Mogwai are a band that has tons of more credibility than them, they have different audiences and it's not like they are "opening" for them, saying this made them look douchey because there really was no need...

I posted the link because of the controversy and the Glastonbury related fuzz, but yeah i don't see the point of them insulting Lars...

The people against Metallica playing the festival (and why) all seems a bit short-sighted. James isn't Ted Nugent for Christ's sake.

It's a dumb controversy that needs to stop, i don't support any kind of hunting but it's getting ridiculous...

Yeah they even used to have a disclaimer on his website that said something like "we have strong and controversial opinions, if you can't stand them get out..." or something... i even posted the "Blur are shite" remark on the first post of this thread, and though i agree with the Blur bashing i see a difference of Metallica's bash.
The "Blur are shite" was kind of an inside joke... and worked better when the band was still an indie act... and i can see were they are coming from Blur it's almost the opposite of Mogwai in terms of sound/image/concepts, etc... it made sense because it was a reminder of what you are going to listen is NOT Blur...
Yet, i think they should get over it... Mogwai has gained attention, reputation, critical acclaim and a loyal fanbase: they don't need to bash other bands anymore... and even if they do i don't necessarily agree, but they like to be seen as the "Instrumental rebels" so i'll let them be.

I totally agree with the Blur bashing - Britpop was SOOOO annoying in the 90s in the UK when it was shoved in your face at all times, it should be called out as they were undeserving of the ridiculously uncritical acclaim they all got in my opinion (Oasis too, who were actually way more overhyped) - also, see Arctic Monkeys.
About the Metallica slur, Metallica are one of those bands I loved in the very early 90s and thought various songs from Master of Puppets (disposable heroes, leper messiah) were different for a metal band and combined interesting styles. However every time I've seen them live, including an arena show in 1991 or 1992 they just seem to have disappointed me. So I don't find that particularly offensive

got this e-mail the other day. glad they're doing the right thing, but i'm sad it's delayed:

Hi,

Apologies for the group email but it seemed like the quickest, most effective way of reaching out to you and bringing you up to speed with the Mogwai box set and the current status of its delivery. Cutting to the chase, I should tell you straight that it's going to arrive later than we had initailly anticipated and for that I can only apologise and offer you an explanation as to why it's happened.

You'll probably be aware that we get sent test pressings of every vinyl LP we plan on manufacturing and that those test pressings need to be approved before the LP (or LPs in this case) can go into mass production. We had an issue with one of the test pressings which just didn't sound 100% and - after soliciting second and third opinions from various sets of trusted ears - we opted to send it back to the plant and ask them to press it again to reduce surface noise. We did this knowing that it would result in a delay for the final delivery date of the boxset but felt it was far more important this reissue was late and as close to perfect as we could make it, rather than on time but sonically below par. Hopefully that's the approach you would have expected from us too.

So, how late is it going to be? Well, we had to wait and approve the new test pressings before we could confirm a definitive completion date from the pressing plant. Having received word now, we've set an official retail release date of July 21st but that date reflects warehouse processing leadtimes and is when we would expect the boxsets to be on retail shelves, not when we'll have stock in the office which will be a fortnight earlier (give or take). We expect to deliver all the pre-ordered boxsets (ie yours) at the same time we'll be shipping the retail stock into warehouses etc. and predict that'll be on or around July 10th at the latest. We understand this represents a potential delay in excess of three weeks and can only offer our apologies and assurances that the delay's been incurred with our best intentions. The position hasn't been helped of course by vinyl's continuing rise in popularity (the volume being pressed in mainland Europe doesn't seem to have abated since Record Store Day).

Ultimately, this is not an inexpensive item for you to have ordered and we're all too aware that this delay involves a widening of the gap between paying for it and receiving it: if you'd prefer us to refund your order (even in the short term) then we'll be happy to oblige, just drop us a line at shop@chemikal.co.uk and we'll sort that for you asap. Again, our sincere apologies. We hope your disappointment at the delayed arrival of the boxset is eased by our determination to ensure it's worth every penny or cent you've generously invested.

On behalf of everyone at Chemikal Underground,

Stewart

Watching the Glasto set from last night (point yer proxies here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/events/errnc8/acts/axcbj5#p02169t0)
It always makes me appreciate Hawk is Howling Stuff when I hear it live... most of it comes across flat on record, the same with Rave Tapes material.
Plus Rano Pano live is just a glorious loop of crushing bliss.

My cousin was there, says it was an awesome show! so glad to hear they played "I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead", weird the lack of "CODY" tracks, considering the reissue is upcoming, i just would add "Christmas steps" to that set...

Cool!

Also: Mogwai insult Metallica and call Lars Ulrich: "Unbelievaly bad drummer" (http://loudwire.com/mogwai-take-shots-at-metallica/)
Regarding the Mogwai / Metallica thing, Metallica were selling t-shirts with all the anti-Metallica quotes on it which is quite funny I thought - http://www.factmag.com/2014/06/29/metallica-are-shite-glastonbury-t-shirt/

Typical Metallica though, if they can make money out of something! I didn't know Rob Halford threw a fit because they hadn't asked a British metal band to do it

re-listened to Mr. Beast today for the first time in a while. i really, really love about half of the tracks on the album, and the other half are just ok. probably the only mogwai album about which i feel that way. usually i love everything (but maybe one song, like "the sun smells too loud" on the hawk is howling), or i just like the whole album (a la rock action, which is great all the way through, but not AS great as some of their other stuff).

mr. beast does still hold a special place in my heart, though, because the first time i saw them was on that tour, and they played at the logan square auditorium here in chicago (which is basically like a small school gym) so i was standing literally right in front of john the whole time, and i bought the vinyl of that album at the show (my first mogwai vinyl).

I have a special relationship with that album too!, it was the first Mogwai release i ever owned (that wasn't Mp3's or burned Cd's from a friend) and the first tour i ever attended was the "Mr Beast" one, actually i remember being very impressed with their sound and how aggressive they sounded specially during "We're no Here".
Maybe it's those experiences that make "Mr Beast" one of my favorites, but i think it's a great album, my least favorite is "Happy songs for happy people", it has awesome tracks like "Hunted by a freak", but also boring ones like "Killing all the flies" or "Golden Porsche", still i love the shit out of that album (i think all of their albums have something special and unique)

Wow, thanks for posting that link. Teenage Exorcists is a damn great tune, wouldn't even have thought it was mogwai if I hadn't known better. I like the direction here a lot. Honestly, I love Mogwai to death but haven't really been able to get into their last couple albums save for probably 5-6 songs between them (still think Rano Pano is the greatest thing they've ever written, and the b-side "hasenhide" is tremendous as well. doesn't make sense that it was left off of "hardcore will never die"). The Earth Division EP was the last release I think I totally enjoyed from front to back. The remix album I didn't really like except for that Justin Broadrick mix, and the Les Revenents soundtrack I thought kinda fell flat, though it is great ambient stuff to fall asleep to.

This new song is really refreshing stuff from them though. It'd be interesting to see them do a whole EP or album like this with more vocals and shorter, pop-structured arrangements.

Liked that they were experimenting with more electronics, but just really didn't dig most of the songs themselves, other than Deesh and Simon Ferocious. I agree, i'm hoping that some of the version are alternate or even remixed, it has the value of a compilation and i guess they needed one after all these years, but it's true that for the "diehard" fans there's hardly anything of interest...

It's a comp mostly for newcomers and collectors, i admit i want the Vinyl, despite i own all the tracks, but i already spent on the CODY vinyl a few months ago and got more urgent buys than this one, still i got a feeling i'm going to end up buying "Central Belters" anyway...

The band hasn't released an official statement, but i'm pretty sure it will appear sometime next year, they are still promoting "Central Belters" and maybe they don't want to overload their fans with releases.

Also: John Cummings left Mogwai last month, the group will continue as a 4 piece.

I don't get it either; i understand that "Rock Action" is a small label that only takes care of UK and some places in Europe, but their label in US (and Latin America too by default) is "Sub Pop" and they are owned by Warner music, they should get international distribution by default, it's always expensive to pay for all this imports (mostly shipping).

FYI. Drip drip

and uhmmm...this soundtrack is fucking AMAZING. So good!!

Favorite tracks so far are: no order

Bitterness Centrifuge
U-235
Weak Force
Little Boy
Fat Man (that ending though)

Pripyat is really good as well. NOISY! But great

All in all I give this a 4/5. To me it feels like the instrumental ONLY b-sides to Rave Tapes. (this is NOT a bad thing)

Having not seen the film but knowing the subject matter though, completely makes this record. It is haunting, loud, dirty and a slightly new-ish sound for Mogwai.

Shit - I knew there was a new record I still needed to get - the latest Mogwai.

Anyway - a touch off topic, but I'm not sure it's worth starting a new thread for, it seems Arab Strap are reforming. I've not followed Aidan's career since the break-up, but I've enjoyed Malcolm's work ever since. Very surprised to see them back, but I shan't complain if there's new music, and a full UK tour (just like the old days) would be wonderful.

There's a website here: http://arabstrap.scot/ and they're due to appear on the radio shortly here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07g7hnj

Is Central Belters a good starting point for a new Mogwai listener?
I would say it is.
It resumes most of their career and it has some of their most representative tracks like "Mogwai fears Satan", "Christmas Steps", "2 rights...", "Friend of the Night", etc...

If you want a start with an studio album "Come On Die Young" or "Happy Songs for happy people" are great to begin with...

It's hard to know where to start for a new listener, and everybody has their own favourites of course, but I was very impressed with this live recording from 2011:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbF9M2NcXg4

The actual video quality isn't as high as it could be, and naturally the material covered is weighted towards that year's Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will album, but it's a fantastic performance and gives a nice flavour of the band, I think.

I can't believe these guys are still going so strong. I like some records more than others, of course, and actually Rave Tapes isn't amongst my favourites, but yeah, new track is sounding pretty good.

One thing though - what's with the tours these days? Fair enough if they're just not that into it, but the current tour schedule shows three UK dates - one festival show in Wales, and then it's just Glasgow and London. The last time I saw them was down the coast in Bexhill, but that was still a fair treck, and I think that was a warm-up gig for a few larger shows. I dunno - just seems a bit unusual for a UK band who aren't *that* big to play so little here.

I listened a couple of times now and i really like this album.

In a way it's a continuation of "Rave Tapes", but it also has "vocals-mogwai" similar to "Teenage Exorcists" (Party in the Dark), and "noisy Mogwai", but most of the album is more upbeat and a bit reflexive; it reminded me to "Rock Action" and "Young Team" at moments...

Listened to the leak and really hoping it is just a terrible copy. So overly distorted. Threw "Crossing the Road Material" into Audacity and the whole 2nd half is hitting red. Maybe it is the effect they wanted but not digging it. Multiple tracks sound like they just ramped up the loudness for loudness sake.

henryeatscereal
08-22-2017, 02:01 PM
The leak i downloaded sounded good to me; actually it has good quality all things considered.

"Crossing the Road" has some distorted moments in the same vein as "Mogwai fears Satan" and it's meant to be loud (just like they like), but it's not invasive in the version i have.

listening to the new album, and it's FINE, but nothing on it really sticks out to me. i've loved pretty much everything they've ever put out, but this is their first album that hasn't really spoken to me. nothing on it is making me feel much of anything (whereas, for example, rave tapes had a really strong emotional resonance for me) and that's always one of the most disappointing things that can happen with a band i like. it's also weird because the pieces they did for Before The Flood were INCREDIBLE, so i know they still have the ability to hit me where it counts. this album just totally misses the mark.

I know it sounds like a "touch all bases" type album, but it sounds great after a couple of drinks.

That said, they'll never beat Happy Songs for Happy People, or Rock Action.

But then, I'm from Glasgow, so, eh.

Anybody else experiencing a delay at local record shops for this new record? Love Garden told me they're now expecting CD + Vinyl on Sept 22nd. I put in my order for the box set there, just wondering about other people's experiences.

I've only listened to Every Country's Sun a couple times since the leak. It definitely sounds like a Mogwai record. Everything post-Rock Action has been a slow grower for me. Every record is superb, but I think I already like these songs more than Hardcore or Rave Tapes... time well tell

I wasn't hugely fond of Rave Tapes, but really dug Hardcore Will Never Die, but then Hawk is Howling.. hated that at first, then somewhere down the line it became a favourite, this new one though? lovely, getting real old school Smashing Pumpkins vibes from Battered at a Scramble, and the slow burning tracks never out stay their welcome.

Happy Song will probably remain my personal fav, but this is certainly up there with Mr Beast and Hardcore for my personal Mogwai favs list. Love the B-side 'eternal Panther'.. I think there are also enough vocal tracks by them now that I could scrape together a 'Mogwai songs with vocals' mix cd...

henryeatscereal
09-03-2017, 07:17 PM
Mixed opinions, i dig it...

I think this album is a grower, not the best and not the worst, i liked "Rave Tapes" better, but i also think this album has lots of quality and can be listened at any moment (unlike "Tapes" or "Hawk is howling"); that's why i compared it to "Rock Action".

I checked with my local shop and they said it is a Worldwide release. Looks like the UK is getting the larger portion though.

It is exclusive to the UK and Ireland; I believe they misread/misinterpreted the information and may not have had the last part:

 it is available as a heavyweight white vinyl with download code and this format will only be available as a limited run worldwide and has been produced especially for record store day 2018.  limited to 2000 for the uk and ireland

Any remaining stock will be available to purchase online in a week (from places like Resident Music (http://www.resident-music.com/productdetails&product_id=54737)).

Yeah I've learned kind of not fuck around with shoegaze/noise bands like Caspian, Nothing, etc. Fuck, even two-piece garage rock band Blood Red Shoes who were opening for dance /electronic act The Presets had my ears ringing for two days later but I was stupidly right in front of the girl's amp. This is probably aged me talking, but most things at small clubs earplugs are probably a great idea. Bigger rooms, especially arenas and amphitheaters really have space for the sound to move around. You're just stuck inside a noise trap otherwise and even if you think you're superman, you really are doing irreparable damage if you see enough shows. Good earplugs shouldn't worsen the sound.

In my experience, really good earplugs make it easier to pick out the individual instruments and lyrics. This may just be me, but when things are super loud, I kind of get overloaded and just hear the most intense parts of the instrumentation and have a really hard time with understanding the lyrics. Wearing earplugs completely changed the concert experience for me.

The "live" "stream" was a lot of fun. The new songs sound amazing and the band is top notch -- they just keep getting better and better as they go. A couple goosebump/tears in eyes moments but to no surprise as their music always hits me.

Luckily, I was able to grab a download of the show since they put it on YouTube. Funny thing is, all of the info leading up to this has sounded very strict (ie. can only rewind an hour after stream starts, no plans for a DVD, ticket purchase deadline, breaking it up into 3 different "premiere" times although all are viewable etc...)

But... its just an unlisted video on YouTube

I paid the $15 and do not regret but shocked they didn't go a better route to ensure it wasn't sharable. Or maybe it was all just a troll to see who would pay for something readily available.

It was an amazing performance, thanks for posting!

I'm so happy this band keeps maturing, the new songs are indeed great!

They finally made it private haha -- glad I got a 1080p download of it. Ha.

Now just need this album to leak already - the TRL boxset is delayed until April - which is fine but hoping drips soon.

Oh I got it yesterday -- but its out now officially. I also got the email from Temp. Res and they provided the demo bonus tracks as well that comes on the vinyl and CD box sets which is cool.

Love the album. Fuck Off Money and Its What I Want to Do Mum being my favorites.

Highlights are Midnight Flit (feat. Atticus Ross) and Pat Stains.

I will say...I kinda wish the live stream happened AFTER the album came out -- I listened to the live versions all week and as usual with live versions, they carry a different weight than the live album (for good and bad) -- but there are some elements that make the live versions of a couple songs that sound better than the album. (ie. To The Bin, Here We and Fuck Off Money)

That being said the album is great and definitely falls in line as a sequel to Every Country's Sun.

I liked it more than "Every Country's Sun", not sure were to rate it, but it's a great listen!

I think it's their best album since The Hawk is Howling, and i love Rave and Hardcore. Every Country's Sun is great but it feels like they were readjusting from John Cummings leaving.

Just giving As The Love Continues a run through now. It's okay! To be honest I'd not thought a great deal of the 'singles', but I've bought a digital copy on the strength of the UK chart position excitement (mid-week Number 1!). Plus, it's had really good reviews. I think Hardcore was the last record of theirs I really loved, but their still one of the best bands going. Reznor2112 - I kind of know what you mean about the live thing. I didn't hear the stream, but I only really got into the last LP *after* living with the live versons for a while.

"Its What I Want to Do Mum" has to be the best track!
