I did a search and no thread for Liars came up. I'm surprised. WIXIW comes out this week. My preorder shipped (CD/ wax dipped vinyl). I've got my tickets to the Boston show. I've only listed to the first single, but they say it's more electronic than the last two.

the first time i saw that video i just kind of sat there, mouth agape for a while. i've been listening to liars for their entire existence and they've never let me down. i'm quite excited for the new album.

I got my vinyl/CD bundle yesterday and it came with the dipped in wax extra sleeve. I got # 184 of 355. I've only listened once so far. I like it. Hopefully, some songs stand out more after a few listens. After one listen it just sounds good as a whole.

Yeah, it's great - took me a few listens to really get into the electronic sound, but after the third play it clicked. I still like the dark punk-rock of Sisterworld more, though WIXIW isn't exactly a step backwards.

They Were Wrong, So We Drowned and Sisterworld are pretty badass. Haven't heard the rest of their stuff, so will have to go on a discography binge in before checking the new one.

Haven't listened to all of the new one but have enjoyed what little I've heard.

Love this band. The two albums before this were very listenable but I'm hoping this one is a return to the more atmospheric, challenging style of Drum's Not Dead, which is far and away my favorite of their albums.

04. WIXIW
05. Ill Valley Prodigies
06. Scarecrows On a Killer Slant

11. Pillars Were Hollow and Filled With Candy So We Tore Them Down
encore
12. Be Quiet Mt. Heart Attack!
13. Plaster Casts of Everything

they played the exact same setlist in chicago, so i think it's a fixed one for the tour. (though i could be wrong). i was really surprised to hear "pillars were hollow..."

i got a button and talked to the merch girls for a bit (one of whom did the first remix on Sisterworld Interpretations). they said that the reissues coming out this month are just reissues; nothing remastered or changed about them. i'm looking forward to picking up the older stuff on vinyl.

I was unaware of any reissues. I have WIXIW, self-titled, and They Were Wrong, So We Drowned on vinyl along with some singles (Plaster, Houseclouds, and that tour split 7" with No Age...it has a cover on it I think). I don't think I have Drum on vinyl, but I would have to double check. When are these reissues supposed to be released?

As far as the set, yea...fixed. I read an interview (forget where) that basically said as much. That they weren't sure how the new stuff would translate live and that they have all this new equipment they had to use for...put a bunch of stuff on it and so on. It came across that they're kind of constrained with this new album live. I know they said going into this that they did two rock albums with the last two and wanted to do something different. It wouldn't shock me at all if they go back to that next time and using the fact that they were locked into stuff live with no room for flexibility as one of the reasons. Angus definitely wasn't moving around like he did when we saw them touring behind Sisterworld and Liars; he was stuck at his rig most of the time.

august 14th for all of them.

i have sisterworld and wixiw on vinyl (just recently acquired), and the first two albums on CD (which i've had since each came out). i also have a few random things on vinyl & CD (splits, singles, etc.)

yeah, angus wasn't moving around much, but they were still very entertaining.

Yea. They're always a great show to me. I've seen them 4 times now.

Here's the video for Brats.

Thanks for the links. I'll have to look through my vinyl cases to double check if I have Drums Not Dead. If not, I need to get that and Sisterworld on vinyl. I saw Sisterworld once at retail and it was close to the holidays so I held off. It was gone after though. They had it with them at the tour, but I bought a poster instead.

the sisterworld vinyl i got (through amazon, it's sadly not available directly from the band) came with both the album and the remix album on vinyl and on CD, all for $21. the 2 CD version is already $17, so you're only paying $4 more for two pieces of 180g vinyl. a pretty damn good deal.

work your way backwards through the discography.

"wixiw" is like a less loud version of mess; lush and gorgeous
"sisterworld" is simply incredible
"liars" (s/t) is decent. some good songs, a couple great ones, a couple ok ones.
"drum's not dead" is fantastic, some great sound experiments
"they were wrong, so we drowned" is really weird but i've always loved it
"they threw us all in a trench and stuck a monument on top" is sort of dancey post-punk but it's also great. i got into them when this album came out and i've loved them ever since.

p.s. did anyone else get the mess on a mission 12" on record store day? i can't play my side b because one of the pieces of yarn didn't get pressed down and there's a big lump :(

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll go for WIXIW next. I actually was about to buy that Mess on a mission 12" on RSD (I had it in my hands already but I ran out if money) and yesterday I checked if they had it sale online and it was gone.... Fuck!

there's a copy on discogs for $50. i paid $13. that math does not compute. i really hate RSD gougers. (though it's not as bad as the paranorman soundtrack, for which i paid $28 and it's up for $200 on discogs)

also, wixiw and sisterworld on vinyl both come with CD copies, and i'm pretty sure they're still available on amazon as such. sisterworld also comes with a second record/CD with the entire album remixed (and pretty well).

Which is retarded since Mondo released the soundtrack through their website yesterday and it's STILL available. Granted, it's not GID, but if you REALLY wanted the album itself, it's widely available for 30 dollars.

wish i had seen them when they were touring on Mess, but seeing them on WIXIW was incredible (also saw them when they toured on self-titled and opened for Interpol). for only three people on stage, they make a LOT of noise.

that little snippet sounds like they've gone even darker and more electronic, so i'm very excited to hear the new album.

Yeah, it sounds a bit like something that could've come from WIXIW, but more ominous and eerie. Everything that Liars has done is so cool and creative, it's awesome that they keep pushing their sound forward with every album!

I'd probably rank the albums in this order:

Drum's Not Dead
They Were Wrong, So We Drowned
Mess
WIXIW
Sisterworld
They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top
Liars

More song snippets have been added to their youtube channel, and they all sound fantastic! Kinda sounds like a hybrid of WIXIW, Mess and the self-titled record. Looking forward to hearing the new album in August, judging by what I've heard so far, it isn't going to disappoint!

Has anyone given TFCF a listen? The Grand Delusional, Cliché Suite, No Tree No Branch and No Help Pamphlet are brilliant tracks. The way in which the record combines abstract, WIXIW-esque electronics with sampled acoustic elements is really cool and intriguing.

is it out yet? i thought it hadn't been released. i haven't pre-ordered it because i wanted to make sure i liked it first (although this band has never disappointed me so i don't know why i wouldn't).

Yeah, it came out yesterday! It's definitely a lot less bombastic than Mess. I'd say the last two songs kinda end the album in an underwhelming fashion, but everything else is pretty damn good! The Grand Delusional might be my favourite Liars album opener at the moment.

listened to most of it in the car today. it's even weirder than i expected (which is saying a lot for them). it's also surprisingly mellow/quiet in a way WIXIW wasn't, which i don't know if i love? i was hoping for a continuation of the thread that started with WIXIW and was carried through to Mess, but that doesn't seem to have happened. it's by no means a BAD record, it's just not what i wanted.

It kinda reminds me of Drum's Not Dead in the sense that a few of the songs have a plaintive and isolated atmosphere. I really like how Angus incorporated field recordings of the bush into the record, it really conjures up images of the rugged outback. Liars/Angus always use their recording environments to their advantage. The only nitpick I have with it is that it's a tiny bit too short, and some tracks introduce a great, unique sounding idea, but never really expand upon them. Still, it's pretty cool that it was recorded here in Australia, and hopefully I'll be able to catch the band live in the future.
