Original Post/explanation:
"On light of the recent news by Mr. Reznor, NIN fans have professed to all sorts of depressing psychological responses (most of weirdest cases having been documented by nin.com forum).
Anyways, one of the obvious causes of distress is that we are missing out on an amazing 3D performance, and some may also be speculating that this could also mean that there is no DVD of any kind being created for this tour (which I might be somewhat skeptical about anyways, considering the amount of footage they have already caught and have released in the "trailer"). It would suck if there wasn't one at all...
My point for this post (and I do have a point) is: let's try to make our own DVD. Really.
Vegas is next week and we have tons of ETS'ers that are going to be present. If people were able to sneak in cameras and take footage from different perspectives, the result could be awesome. And this show almost HAS to be epic with everything that is happening (Josh Freese leaving, last show of the leg, Trent professing that this may be the last show done in such a large scale).
And after the show, I'm volunteering to edit the footage (Film major FTW!). You guys send me the footage through mail or through some host site online and I will try to work with the best audio overlay while splicing and cutting together an entire sequence from different angles. Maybe even throw in some ETS extras on the menu from get-togethers and debauchery in Vegas... *waggles eyebrows*
Plausible or not - I'm just throwing this out there as a suggestion. I, personally, haven't seen the show yet and going off of how I feel before going to see it, imagining what it would feel like to never be able to see it - I would really appreciate something visual, something a bit better than the videos on youtube (in accordance with the subtitle on the depressing thread). I can only imagine what you guys in other parts of the world must feel like...
And even if Trent eventually comes out with a DVD in the future, this Fan Bootleg could be a fun project and a much different perspective with a 'Closure' sort of edge to it.
So - what do you guys say? It's a little bit of a short notice... but I think it's definitely workable if enough people get the idea."
If you guys want to donate to chaonotic's trip to film:
The donation is over - we reached $350 in two hours. NIN fans are fucking amazing.
(And btw - Chaonotic's whole trip is around $330, so if the donations even reach there - which I completely doubt - I disconnect the site. I don't want people's extra money, because this is definitely supposed to be free).

Important Note:
PLEASE DO NOT BARRAGE BAND MEMBERS WITH PM'S AND MESSAGES ASKING FOR FOOTAGE/AUDIO
Right now, this is a fan made project and we don't want to be fucking annoying to Trent and Co. - they have enough up their sleeves already. This is our project for now. Our footage. Our audio. It's part of how the video is supposed feel aesthetically.
But if a certain audio source seems to land in my email box anytime soon at gamble@stanford.edu from a particular person, I wouldn't mind using it...
And for future reference, the main bulk of this DVD will be centered around the Vegas show, because obtaining footage from other shows has been less organized, and editing from the same show over the same audio source will be a lot easier and more clean.
Don't get me wrong. I will for sure be looking at films from other concerts, but I will probably only extract the more generic looks - i.e. the parts that I don't have to sync with the music, like far away shots of the stage, Trent antics with the microphone, etc. etc.

Here's a layout of what the camera spread looks like so far:
OK EVERYONE. This is an important post in which I am going to lay out EVERYTHING. So pay attention.
This may seem like a lot of people, but considering how many people
may get shut down by security, I want more. And I especially want more people to volunteer from sections most other sections besides 103, especially on the 2nd floor and the balcony.
Also:
Fuck security. Some people have said that Las Vegas will be strict and some people have said that Las Vegas was actually very nonchalant. Doesn’t matter. We won’t know until we get there. EXPECT to smuggle your camera in. And if you do get caught by security, just offer them your tape nicely and don’t let them have your camera. (And to avoid missing out on taping angles and such, that’s why we need a lot of cameras out there. Inconspicuous cameras, of course. And if you want to be a part of the experience and don’t have the proper equipment, buy an HD camera from Costco and then after the show, return it. I think I may even be someone who does this as well… (as has been mentioned, please check the return policy of the store before you do this. If I'm not mistaken Costco is full price back...)
CAMERA VOLUNTEERS: READ
I will be assigning jobs within the next week (check back every so often, and I should have it decided by Wednesday/Thursday). Each of you will be given a task for filming either one band member, the whole stage, the crowd, or “pit crazy” for the
entire show. Entire is the key word. Also –
please check your camera equipment beforehand and become acquainted with its settings. We are looking for
16:9 as far as screen ratio and for quality: it doesn’t matter. I want this video to be comprised of both clear and magnificent HD as well as nitty gritty camera videos, to add to a unique aesthetic feel.
NINNERS FUCKING AROUND ON CAMERA/TITS
Besides concert footage, I want people footage. I want footage outside the venue before and after. I want footage of people saying thanks to Trent, the band, etc. etc. I want people wasted at parties, singing karaoke, getting naked – anything worthy of a good fan sequence that others would enjoy. Just do it. (I might even use some of the footage for a side project in which I document my first concert ever -yes, I’m popping my cherry concert with NIN. Sexy. – a completely irrelevant point. I was thinking about including it on the DVD, but came to the conclusion that no one cares.)
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE FOOTAGE
AFTERWARDS
You will be sending the footage in full complete raw form on DVD to ME (don’t worry – I’m not trying to be a douche and monopolize this whole project… as you will see later in this post, I will be dividing this project up entirely). Although I shouldn’t be giving out my address to a bulk of you collectively, I’m gonna trust that you guys are not coming to stalk me while I edit your footage. If you have an easier way of sending the footage to me in complete form, let me know otherwise. I’d rather not deal with the hassle of finding FTP servers and certain video hosting sites that don’t produce the same quality while hosting the video.
THEN WHAT?
After I collect all the videos, then we get to business. I’m going to divide the whole production into different teams which are going to be headed by different people.
Audio – RyanJ – Since he is the one providing us with his mastered audio of the show, I’m putting him in charge of making sure that he makes one complete audio track that will be our fill over the entire video. Also, please note that under Ryan, we have THREE people working on audio at the Vegas show, so don't panic about not having enough sources.
Video – Me. I call dibs on editing, cataloguing, and splicing the
footage to the audio that RyanJ provides. I’m going to have a lot of time this holiday season… and I mean a lot of time (unless I want to kill myself in my extremely boring hometown) – and I can’t think of anything better than spending my time both listening to NIN and editing a film.
Effects – I have gotten a ton of PM’s regarding people willing to provide graphics and editing. After I edit the raw material and put it together to the audio, I want to give this to someone else to be able to play with in Adobe After Effects for making text appear before songs and perhaps an intro graphic.
DVD – We need someone to be able to create an amazing menu and build the entire DVD with all of its features. Anyone interested, let me know.
DVD Title – I’ve seen that some people have already speculated toward album titles and I want to encourage this. I want to open this up to the public and have an overall internet poll concerning suggestions. I think everyone should have a hand in deciding what the meaning behind this DVD should be, and in turn what title would best represent the feel of the DVD. This will, of course, occur sometime in the future. If anyone wants to be in charge of doing and organizing an internet poll for the title, please PM me.
DVD Art – Another important thing to consider is the art. I was hoping to have a contest similar to the contest that happens every so often with the NIN Art site, where people upload their work and the best one is picked. If anyone wants to be in charge of this (hopefully someone who is involved with the NIN Art website), let me know.
CELEBRATION Icklekitty has already relayed to me an idea that would be amazing with the release of the DVD. For now, I will remain mysterious on the manner, but just look forward to goodies in the future

.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO APPLY FOR A POSITION AND ARE THINKING ABOUT PMing ME…
Please include examples of past works in this field (or in the case of being an experienced “poller”, just say that you know an efficient way to poll everyone – which is mostly a no brainer). It’s going to be hard for me to pick people, because I won’t know how experienced you are in these realms, so please give me as much information as possible (and I really don’t want to pick someone shitty to edit something just because they PMed me first). And also note that this project will take a lot of time and attention. If you do not have any of this, please do not PM me. I only want people who WANT to do this – I don’t want anyone to take a position and then stilt the progress of the DVD.
There. That seems to be it for now.
After that all gets carried out… in a “foreseeable future” – we should have a brilliantly developed Fan DVD.
Thanks guys!

Pete Schwetty wrote:** UPDATE **
The venue for Friday night's performance in Victoria will have a very relaxed camera / camcorder policy... hmmn...
Pete is obviously watching and knows whats up. If anyone is willing to get some extra footage at Victoria tomorrow night, let me know and I will see what I can do with it - perhaps mesh it together with some awesome footage of fans goofing around... or something.
So - Trent is watching

.
And for future reference:
Although we will probably be organizing specific jobs for certain cameras, i.e. two cameras stationed soley on closeups of Trent... or Justin... whole stage... crazy cam... etc. (since it's a bitch to try to edit a jumpy video), here are some ideas to keep in mind for things to be aware of for what should be predominant in the dvd showing of these songs:
999,999- wide shot - It's going to be dark but you'll be prepared when the lights come up for...
1,000,000- you saw the footage from Red Rocks yeah? Someone with a great zoom and higher speeds needs to zero in on JFF during that drum intro! Get a lot of the close up action here from the 3 guys up front.
Letting You- pick a side, pick a band member
Discipline- someone needs to capture ally.
March of the Pigs- wide angle for all the crazy lights
Head Down- pick a side of the stage. someone with better cam pick trent.
The Frail- tight on trent, he's the only one on stage i think.
The Wretched- focus on a side of the stage, like tr+jmj or tr+robin or robin+jff or jmj+ally.
Closer- wide screen to capture the red closeup video face on the back screen.
Gave Up- close up on front band members, especially robin.
The Warning- wide angle
Vessel- wide angle, and those with better cams with better focus get tight on trent & ally+jmj.
The Great Destroyer- wide angle, someone keep it tight on trent the whole time, don't move out. Also put your lighting on manual, put your focus on manual. When the lights go apeshit @ the break, your camera will try madly to try to compensate for all those craziness. Try to override it beforehand/[u]disengage auto-focus.
Ghosts 5- definitely wide angle - take in as much of the set as possible! wide shots - if you can get a really nice sillouette of a band member that'd be great. Slow pan across the front of the screen. also a shot of the audience reaction to lights going up, an example of a close up of the faces would be cool.
Ghosts 17- same as above. but someone pick the audience; when the raining lights open up, it'd be good to get reaction shots.
Ghosts 19- same as above.
Piggy- if someone can keep a tight focus on trent as he is highlighted by the pulsing blue vulva behind him, that's be awesome *grin*
The Greater Good- wide angle, same as closer. someone with a better zoom needs to keep an eye out for the backward walking Trent.
Pinion- wide angle. no question about it re: the eraser effect.
Wish- wide angle at first, focus on trent & jff.
Terrible Lie- pick a side of the stage. someone pick ally, he needs more footage!!!
Survivalism- wide angles. don't focus so much on the surprise buttseck, try to capture some of the live FAN footage if you can.
The Big Come Down- wide angle to capture the outwardly radiating light pulses. trent is highlit.
Ghosts 31- wide angle to capture those swirling smoke lights.
Only- follow the trent mouse behind the screen *grin* wide angle but dont forget the band member rocking out the chorus.
Down In It- go long for ally on the synths!! YEAH!!!
Head Like A Hole- can share focus between tr & robin. don't forget jff going apeshit on the drums.
ENCORE:
Echoplex- wide angle for the faux LEMUR & JFF. then close ups of the band.
Reptile- wide angle for all that luxurious green lighting. close ups of trent and robin.
The Good Soldier- someone get a close shot of tr and that tambourine!
Hurt- focus on trent, or focus on the crowd and their reactions. someone get footage of robin on guitar. at the second last stanza, someone pull out for that last crash, to get the wide angle.
In This Twilight- be careful with the "whip pans"! It's tempting at that last 'good bye' to move from one member to another, but fight the temptation. Keep focus on the wide shot you already established, or keep focus on your particular band member that you've chosen from the get go. Everyone go tight on trent during the last zero sum piano solo though, for the money shot! It's a sweet sweet goodbye, don't miss that.
If you have any suggestions for things to look for during songs, chime in! Thanks to guilty for the suggestion!
CAMERA CREW JOBS
Yes... it's culminating into the finals moments! Get excited!
CAMERA STYLES
There are several different camera styles that I want to go over and assign to different people. Here is a list:
-
FULL STAGE
Example pictures (for framing):
This frame is meant to encapsulate the entire stage. The reasons are obvious. The camera work is stagnant and unmoving. If you can sneak in a tripod, it is highly recommended. Check out most of chaonatic's work for really great full stage framing. Don't bother zooming in - we don't need it. It's also awesome when the bottom of the frame is lined with fans' hands... a cool aesthetic detail to keep in mind.
-
FAN CAM
Examples:
Mostly fans hands and chaotic view of the stage
Crazy, unsteady camera (not too crazy, mind you. The people at home watching this DVD don't want to vomit), that is mostly in close up with what is happening on stage (following the action rapidly) or focuses on moving with the fans. During soft songs, this camera also focuses on the reaction of audience, the hands waving in the air, crowd surfers, and even the faces of the audience. Since this will mostly be for cameras in GA, just go with the flow and film in long shot of the stage with fans around the edges of the frame. This job is more free-range than others, because of lack of location and the moving of the audience, so if an opportunity strikes for good close ups (as will promptly be described) then take them.
-
BAND MEMBERS
There will be three different sub-groups under this description:
- Long shot
- Medium shot
- Extreme close-up shot
Long shot
Examples:
This is where the camera follows one band member, and keeps their whole body within the frame (although, most of the time, their head touches the top of the frame and their feet can touch the bottom). Keep in mind not to have band members always be centralized in the frame. It's sometimes more aesthetically pleasing when the subject of the frame is at the corner/side of the frame.
Medium shot
Examples:
As can be surmised, this shot is a bit closer in, but only taping half of their bodies (legs usually cut off by frame). It's a more intimate feel and provides a different closer, but not too close, look of band members across the stage.
Extreme Close-Up
Examples:
This shot is centered around closeups of faces (I couldn't really find too many pictures that were as close as I want most of these frames to be, but I think you get the picture). What is also encouraged is a combination of faces and instruments (closeup of guitar/bass... etc.)
Here is where we are covering for the venue:
And based on seating, these are the jobs:
FULL STAGE:
- Chaonatic
- Rjonic
- kingofsurvivalism
- Andyman
- esoph
- jessamineny
- tinadoll
FAN CAM
- ginaisstar
- Saint Frantic
- _nonentity
BAND MEMBERS
Alessandro (shot size doesn't really matter - Ally fans don't hate on me...):
- Magtig
- Jessica SarahS
- Miss_Anne_Thropy
JMJ
- Greg Lyon (medium shot)
- MrSvperstar (close up)
- Callisto (long shot)
Robin
- LadyRedCrest (medium shot)
- Johnbron (medium shot)
- Callahan (long shot)
- Ryan T (long shot)
Josh (shot size doesn't really matter much here either... just get him alternatively with his whole drum set. Medium shot preferred.)
- Warhawk
- Dwall45
- no44
Trent
- Jamelie (close up)
- aden410 (medium shot)
- Ad infinitum (long shot)
- Lt. Randazzo (long/medium shot - a combination)
I am hoping everyone gets to see their position and adheres to it. I know it might not be too fun to just close in on certain people for the whole concert, but we really need these shots in order to see all angles for the DVD. I will be eternally grateful if you follow through (plus there are only really 3 people filming per band member)...
And for meetings:
I'm just going to say that it is vital to meet before we make it into the venue (to trade numbers in case we need to contact each other when getting in trouble with cameras, syncing camera settings, affirming jobs - so we know for sure that all of the jobs are covered).
I'm volunteering my room and won't know my room number until Friday when I check in so... yeah. I say we meet at 6:00pm (gives us two hours before the show). I will let you guys know my room number in Planet Hollywood when I found it out... as far as contacting me - if you are filming, please friend me on facebook (and include your handle/name that I know you gave me so I can recognize) and my phone number is on my info page (this is a much faster and easier way for me to do this... considering I really don't feel like messaging you all my phone number separately). My profile is
here. If you don't have facebook, I guess I will just have to PM you my number anyways...
When you get my number, send me a text to let me know its you so I can log you in my cell phone. When I figure out where we are meeting (in case it changes), I will text you all with a location and time. Hopefully a significant amount of you will make it so that we can for sure know that we cover all the camera angles and can set up/get acquainted with camera settings.
After the show, I am opening up a time period for people to drop off tapes/DVD. I would entirely recommend this because then it won't be so much of a hassle to send it to me later on. Chaonatic has offered to take tapes from people and transfer them to DVD to give to me, if anyone is interested.
Chaonatic - Please PM me with a time that you would like to meet after the show... maybe even on Sunday? I will have more information on a meet time that I can grab stuff from people afterward. (And believe me... I don't want to spend much time doing this stuff after the show either. I want to party hard afterward... so I might just look into getting stuff more so on Sunday).
Anything I forgot?
Also, if anyone has any suggestions on change or additions, please express your opinion. I am all ears. Or more so, eyes here.
LETS ROCK THIS SHIT!
