From NIN.com:

File this one under lost opportunities.

I'm very proud of the show we've put together for this tour and have been working hard the last few months to find a way to capture it. I had an amazing situation lined up that would have allowed me to film the show in 3D with James Cameron's team for a theatrical release as well as DVD / BluRay, etc. We had an extra date added to the tour that we were going to give away all the tickets for and have a filming party / thank you show.

I made two critical mistakes. One was to approach a certain record company that owns some of the song rights about producing / funding. The second was to allow said company to fuck around as usual for months before saying um... no. We then achieved the impossible by finding alternate production / funding but the timetable is too rushed to get it filmed comfortably with the remaining time left on the tour. This tour and a lot of the personnel involved finish at the end of this leg, so we can't push filming into Jan / Feb.

Deep breath...
This was an amazing tour and production - certainly the best thing I've ever been involved with and likely the final tour for NIN on this scale. Thank you to those who came out to see it and forgive me for having a Kanye West moment, but this was FOR SURE the best show of the year and any bullshit end-of-the-year poll you may read in the next few weeks that says otherwise simply has it wrong. Those of you who saw it know I'm right.

The shows we have announced in 2009 and any more that may be announced will be a completely different approach with some different personnel and will likely be the last for the foreseeable future.

I'm now extremely happy I'm going to Vegas next week. Wow.

This message does make me feel quite strange - not sure what to feel. No shows after 2009 for the "foreseeable future" does make me feel kinda sad. People over on nin.com are treating this like it's the end of touring/NIN itself forever. I highly, highly doubt this is the case.

I think I'll wait for more from the man himself before actually freaking out too much.

Kind of a somber message to receive for a night where I have a lot to do...Neutral

Yeah, I would love it if they managed to pull the DVD together in the nick of time. But I can understand if they can't, especially if the crew are done at the end of the tour. Hopefully Rob managed to capture some of the more awesome parts of the show, like The Greater Good, the recent versions of Closer, the entire Ghosts section... Sad

I think maybe Trent should have clarified what he meant, some people are reading this as a suicide note.

I am startled, but I don't want to jump to conclusions until we hear more. Frankly, touring took a lot out of him, the cancelled dates weren't exactly helpful either, and he had to fit the bill for so much to get this thing off of the ground.

I think he wants a break! Since he's been clean, it's been nothing but albums and touring and ARGs and Google Earth scavenger hunts. It sounds like he wants time to do other things he's passionate about (producing, video game soundtracks, tanning, drag, etc.)

Sad That sucks, I was really looking forward to any type of dvd. Granted the 3D thing would have been cool, but right now I would just be happy to have any high quality recording of this experience. Oh well I will always have the memories. . . Sad

My first read just reads as - "this cost me a shitload of money, and with legalities and the bad economy etc it's pissed me off that not so many are coming out, nor that I can capture this on DVD."

..which of course makes me VERY sad. I SO WANTED a DVD of this SO BAD. This tour kicks the last tour by a zillion lenghts, so it's depressing. But we do have to remember that many of those songs are owned by a record company that Trent left behind.. Something as small as that can screw it all up - and it did.

Many of my fav artists have now scaled down their tour productions from their initial years and are nowhere near what they used to do. It's just a question of economics. But it doesn't mean that Trent won't tour again or that NIN is ready to pack it in.

Lugging something of this scale across the ocean also would be fantastically expensive, especially in an economy as ours it's too much of a risk. So I understand all that, but we're all human and emotional, and this does suck for those overseas.

It's just bad timing..very bad timing..

Tara
PS..god, NO DVD of this tour? NONE? I can't get over that. It's as nuts as the Depeche Mode Violator era not being captured. (well it was..but not up to their standards..) We are still talking about that, and that was 1990. Will the NIN community now have to spend our lives yearing for one? God, and not even will it have been caught by MTV or another station so we can be happy with that. This is a nightmare.

the last part bothers me the most:

I feel so fucking terrible now... I know I probably shouldn't but I can't help it... (Had another moment of weakness there. I really really really want to see NIN live and the uncertainty of "may be announced" part makes it sound like the odds for that to happen are slim... I hope I'm wrong)

Trent needs to find a lady friend. Settle down and have some babies.
Just make some albums along the way. Then little Reznor can hire little Freese and they can continue on the path of musical awesomeness.

Or just take a vacation......I hope this isn't at bad of a message as it sounds.

As a NIN fan "foreseeable future" scares the shit out of me.

Guys, forseeable future could mean - early 2009 which is what everyone was expecting. It doesn't mean the end of the world. Though I know NIN fans will freak out given the past. But don't forget what we've been given as of late, it doesn't mean he'll resort to old habits - which the reason why has been explained. That's in the past though.

Most bands of NIN status take at least 2-3 years in between albums. That's normal..we've just forgotten because we've been whacked with a lot of stuff. So if they take a break after this for a few years, that's normal. Trent will always create, he's an artist.

That sucks balls that only NA and SA got these amazing shows. I'm sure the cost to bring it out in 2009 was too prohibitive. Boo.

So does this mean that no dvd is going to be released or that if/when one is, it won't be in 3D or getting a theatrical release?

not yet, at least. unless he can somehow gather up the funds to get the crew and equipment and production for this before the end of the NA tour.
