Ok, somebody posted the following over at DN today.

Quote:
I figured that you would all like to know that in the upcoming issue of Alternative Press Magazine (the 25 most anticipated artists of 2004) which hits stands the first week of December, one of the artists/albums covered is NIN. The report states the overall vibe and sound of the record and lists some of the people that are involved in the production such as Rick Rubin, Atticus Ross, and Leo Herrera. The official album title is "BLEEDTHROUGH." There are three song titles also mentioned. Another point worth noting is that Trent is quoted as saying that he is fed up with the perfected quality of computer-produced music (specifically the use of ProTools software) and that this record was done with alternate methods. There is no specific release date mentioned. Interesting.

Can anyone confirm/deny this?

Woah. Levi, WCM???

I am undergoing a controlled freak-out over this snippet here. Hmm.. I'll wait for further confirmation before completely spazzing.

I'll bet one or two takers that the news is bullshit.

A) Leo Herrera is not famous, afaik. Why would AP cite him as a contributor?

B) Trent has always embraced digital music creation far ahead of most musicians. His very expensive studio was built by him, with lots of digital toys, because he likes them.

C) Googled analog bleedthrough:

Quote:
It occurs right at the end of the instrumental chorus, this little chunk of digital silence, and it's a silence so pure and so profound that I understood immediately it had nothing to do with acoustics. If black is the absence of color, this silence was the absence of sound. In spades. No sloppy analog bleedthrough, no hint of an echo, no intrusive tape hiss. Nothing. It's a silence so perfect that it's certainly not natural, a silence that, indeed, could only have been achieved digitally. (I'm aware that "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" had analog origins; it's the extraordinary digital cleanup of the final product that is of importance here.)

Seems like total bullshit to me. At least it's a little bit more layered in terms of NIN humor than Disrepare though =)

Well, I wouldn't be suprised either way if this news is bull or real.
At this point, I would have thought that we would have certainly heard something about the new album a couple months ago.
I personally like the album title (if it's the real one. Confused )
Thanks Brock.

In response to aphekqs, I decided to check for support on this claim of NIN being covered in Alternative Press.
If you go to http://www.altpress.com and watch their intro as to the "25 Most Anticipated Artists of 2004", the NIN logo does indeed make an appearance.
A lead-on for poor, dejected NIN fans? Possibly. Likely. However... this does offer at least basic support to the claim of NIN being covered in the magazine.
Whether the content is truth... O_o I have doubts. Trent rejecting digitally-mastered music outright does sound a little far-fetched. However, thinking about it, it does logically follow his evolution of sound. The Fragile was less produced by computers and meant to display human weakness rather than the cold perfection of TDS. Perhaps his next album will express his coming to terms with being human.

By the way - I've been lurking for the past 5-6 months. I'm not sure if I've even actually posted. So hi.

Cool I'm cool.

Whats with that story, I also find that shit hard to believe. Yeah maybe there are going to be A.P, but that doesn't mean much.it might not even be a new interview or an interview at all. They might just mention them on their list. Isn't new NIN always anticipated?

I agree. I think that's probably going to end up being the case, which saddens me. They'll probably write some article on Good Charlotte, or something or other, and mention that NIN exists, if they mention it at all. But... I can dream.

Bleed-through

Definition:

When paper is too thin or the ink applied too heavily the color can bleed or seep through to the other side. This is known as show-through Using the right paper for the type of ink coverage required can eliminate bleed-through.

I believe a more relevant definition is the one pertaining to magnetic audio tape. Sound information is stored on tape as discrete changes in magnetism that are analogous to the pressure changes in air which we perceive as sound. As you know, audio tape is stored rolled on a spool. Bleed-through or print-through occurs over long periods of time: the information on one section of tape can print onto the other sections wrapped within and around it. This is very noticeable in sections of a recording that are supposed to be silent; you'll hear very faintly another part of the recording. The heads of the tape deck are picking up magnetic information that has printed itself onto other parts of the tape.

It was probably just a coincidence, but nin.com did get pretty lively on a holiday (the 4th of July to be exact), and with that AP update timed to near Thanksgiving maybe something good might happen, well, not involving turkey.
Where was the important first news announced about The Fragile? On nin.com or in the music media?

Possibly, but this doesn't make much sense in the context of nin.com

1. The images on nin.com were mostly in "print"
2. There was a hidden message that said something to the effect of "I am on the otherside"

Therefore, if bleed through has anything to do with the next nin album the text at nin.com wasn't just disapearing but it was actually "bleeding through."

Or the "news" was bull shit and none of this really matters.

well, i think the fact that bleedthrough.net is registered to nothing is pretty interesting in itself. that's as much evidence as we're going to get for now, until this AP issue comes out and proves/disproves what we've heard. i don't like the title bleedthrough, though.

This is what made me immediately think of tape print-through:

If you think about it, ink bleeding from one page onto another has absolutely nothing to do with Nine Inch Nails (at least not yet). Not forgetting the nin.com fiasco, we might both be right. Or maybe we're both wrong, the AP comment that aphekqs found over at DN is false, the WHOIS info about bleedthrough.net is some kind of fluke (or sick joke from the Nothing crew), and we're getting sodomized again with pointless pixel-pushing and quasi-cryptic messages...

Well, "bleedthrough" as a title does seem to thematically fit the progression that the CDs have taken. The word itself comes with enough basic and implied meanings that it would also fit into Trent's Book Club selection from last summer, and nin.com fading away. That said, I also have reservations about it as a title, but it's not like Rez is going to send out a memo asking fans if they want him to use it or not. T-Dizzle

One prolbem I have with the title is to me it dosent seem to fit in whit the other albums. Like you had Broken, TDS, The Fragile, and now BleedThrough ? I dunno just seems kinda odd.
