Atleast this is better than what Zeppelin did.

That actually seems to be the case for a large portion of the fans your music attracts. But, I guess that anonymity sprinkled onto a heaping tablespoon of insecurity is the perfect recipe for negativity & assholishness, especially on the internet.

Ignore those people is all - don't soak up the negative energy. In the end, you'll feel better knowing that you at least gave it your all & did what you felt was right for the artform; and at that, you're doing an excellent job. You're a genius.

I just listened to Discipline for the first time and already fell in love with it! I seriously cannot wait to see what the future unveils to us.

Interesting reading comparisons to WT and PHM. The truth is, this track just came out "as is". I am obviously aware of how "poppy" it is and that should be taken as no indication of what other music I may or may not be working on might sound like. It's almost summer, it felt right, it was refreshing after GHOSTS, I went with it.
Freedom from the infrastructure of record labels means immediate turn-around time from me to you, if that's the plan. It's exciting to be able to do that and it's affecting my method of working at the moment. I suspect soon I will purposely take more time away and work differently - perhaps more calculated and deliberate. For now, this method is stimulating to me and is yielding results I'm pleased with.
What in the hell am I saying? Take your fucking shirts off and dance!

keep it up man. i've had my shirt off since the song came out. this is a great track, i'd love to know exactly what it's about. can i assume some sort of meaning will be presented on may 5th?

do what feels right and don't listen to some of the people on here. sorry, but you do attract a good amout of assholes for fans. but i think the assholes are just more vocal than the rest of us. and also, you know these people wouldn't even be here if they didn't respect you greatly.

and for those of you who don't, why the fuck are you here. get a fucking life, please. thank you. i'm very sick of seeing people spend so much time talking about the things they don't like. whouldn't you be a little happier if you spent your time discussing the things you do like. wtf?

What's with all the ZeppelinRules hate anyway? Loads of people posted something similar on these boards since WITH_TEETH came out, but he just happened to be the one unlucky enough to be stumbled upon by Mr. Anonymous (really, why he still bothers with the stupid nickname is beyond me, only Reznor himself could respond so childishly to criticism). Okay, you can argue back and forth over whether you agree or not, but just saying 'You're a dickhead because you don't like it' is, well, childish. The song is funky enough, but I think I can narrow its funky-ness down to the little pianotune in the chorus. For me anyway. And let's face it: it's not the best song ever written. When I first heard My Violent Heart, I was so relieved it was good I just sat and enjoyed the moment for about an hour. This is nowhere near as mindblowing.
So just all agree to disagree, and go do something productive. Or not.

Because if he uses a real name than it becomes official. Although I think he needs to fuckin' chill out sometimes, I'd rather him stick around and be himself instead of giving carefully worded press releases.

Not the best song ever written?

UH OH! WE GOT A RETARD ALERT!

Guess what shit for brains? This wasn't a competition to write the best song ever! And it's free! It was a fun song he did for a moment, he NEVER stated he was trying to change the fucking world.

And yea, people here are going to agree with him, you know why? CAUSE SOMETIMES THEY SIMPLY AGREE! Not everyone is brainwashed, some people here have a mind of their own. And if some shithead said the crap that other dickface started spouting, I'd flip him off too.

leave zep alone, he's been a member of ets for a long time and isn't some random troll. the only reason you guys are saying mean shit is because trent reznor jumped on him, and now you guys are using it to try to get reznor's attention. reznor has also jumped on jinsai, icklekitty, saturnine, ninjah ... really, the list is substantial. and now you're going to add an intelligent, valued member like elke to your hate list?

zep said his opinion, reznor responded to it. the end. do you guys really think reznor needs all this suck-up "yeah! what he said!" shit to stroke his ego? he's a grown man, hopefully he doesn't need you guys performing endless digital blowjobs to continue his career.

you know, people haven't looked at you-know-who's join date. he's been here since november of 2002. yet, people seem to think this is the very first time people gave him shit about a song or an album or whatever. but it's not. and, oddly enough, reznor didn't curl up in a ball and cry and quit his career and become a recluse every time people razzed him about stuff or said something he wrote sucks. (here is a good example.) in fact, he's done quite the opposite. he may "react" to criticism, but he tends to knee-jerk react to lots of things. and he admits that he sometimes flies off the handle a little too soon. shit happens. but ets members jumping on other ets members over this shit get really fucking old.

especially when the "RETARD" and "GAY" name-calling starts up.

right on, rez-bro! you're a bro among bros! Look at you, blasting in like Rambro and firing off your launcher like nobrody's business, bro. Serious Brotosaurus Rez action. Brodius Maximus. I'm not big on labels, but you, more than any of the wiggers, bitches, goth chicks, dorks, homos, or Mexicans I know, are absolutely beyond rebroach.

anyway; i neither loved nor hated this song (although i really like the lyrics), but the song has been stuck in my head all day like some kind of ear worm so ...

I really like this song.

And it's not a YZ2 song, no matter how much I'd like it to be.

And how cool would it be if it turned out to be on an EP with 4 b-sides? Like studio versions of Not So Pretty Now, Non-Entity and two other With Teeth b-sides, of which the names are escaping me.

I don't know about you guys, but I found the song pretty fitting with spring time. While walking around and seeing the streets with sprouting trees and flowers and whatnot, it cheers me up with its poppy vibe.

Well, the fact that he's been a member for so long makes it all the more pathetic. If he's really a fan and doesn't like a particular album or song, I think he should express his disliking of it in a way that isn't so negative and dismissive. That dude ripped on Trent for something that wasn't even true, and that makes him an asshole.

And as for wanting to get Trent's attention - I think it's pretty obvious that he wants it anyways... just listen to the lyrics of his latest single.

Au contraire. It's just not quite as ultra depressing as, say, Zero Sum.

But i have some gigs where i DJ and i plan on playing Disicipline because you can freakin dance to it

Look, it's pretty obvious that most people aren't going to like every single song on every single album that he puts out. I'm guilty of it. If I don't like a particular song, I'll definitely voice my opinion on it.

What I WON'T do however is use adjectives like "cheesy," "dirty-sounding," "simple," and "mindless" to show how much I think it ultimately sucks. The most important thing is that you have a choice to voice your opinion in a way that isn't negative, dismissive, and just plain disrespectful - and that dude obviously crossed the line with his little 5 second critique and chose to be an asshole.

A lot of hard work and effort goes into the creative process, and for some keyboard-analyst to simply stroll along like sarcastic dickhead and dismiss it all in a such negative fashion is completely uncalled for, imo.

If you think otherwise, you're probably a dickhead too.

Once again i'll repost what I said:

Just because someone agrees with Trent doesn't make them a ass kisser.

His comments were assholish, and summed up basically said "Hey Trent, you are unoriginal and recycle the same old shit. I'm a pretentious cunt".

It's one thing to state a few songs you dislike, it's another to call him an unoriginal twat who hasn't made a single good song since The Fragile.

If you ask me, that was just TR having a laugh there, in a self defacing way, considering the whole thread is dissing his work (but in the right way to do it), not in the way displayed in this thread, the xoxo's at the end of it are hyperbolic and show the inherent sarcasm within what he wrote, but in a non aggresive way.

I agree with the above posters, some pretentious arrogant fool who has never produced, recorded, wrote or even worked on a record themselves dissing someone's entire body of work over the past half decade, is not the correct way to go about it. Sure you don't have to like discipline, and you can state that, I don't care that much for Ghosts (aside from 4 Ghosts I which I'm in love with) compared to the likes of W_T and the lyricised tracks on TF, but I don't go around claiming it's all untalented crap because I know it's not, it's just not my cup of tea. Fact is, any new material is good material, if you find all post Fragile music to be bad, what are you doing posting on a NIN messageboard in 2008, go to bed, turn on Closure, wrap up tight and dream of the 90's.

actually, he didn't use those words. you just did.

i was taught manners. my mother taught me, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." and bad manners should never be countered with more bad manners. unless you want bad karma.

Personally, I think the new song is aces. I expect this to become my most played song on iTunes in the days preceding the new album's release. The lyrics will no doubt drive arm-cutting goth girls into a frenzy, but I think they're quirky and funny.
