And on that note, it does look as if the worst thing that could happen, didn't -- although I won't exhale about that Lake Pontchartrain storm surge until at least Wednesday. There's still an appalling amount of damage, but not the kind that could've literally made the city unsupportive of life for the next six months.

Voodoo goers, consider it an opportunity to help the local economy.

And if the I-59 and I-10 are open so I can get there.

Bad news, kids. The 17th Street Canal levee broke last night pouring water into areas that were previously spared. Waters continue to rise in central NOLA this morning because the pumps aren't working. The areas flooded include Lakeview, Mid-City, Carrollton, Gentilly, and City Park.

I heard a man who has a business in the Quarter say they wanted to clean up before Labor Day weekend to look nice for visitors. I don't think New Orleans is going to have visitors for a while until they can get the water pumped out and open I-10.

Pray that another levee doesn't break.

Kids, I think we're gonna get a cancellation notice soon. All the threads on the Voodoo Festival forum were locked a few minutes ago and the administrator left this message:

We are sending their thoughts and prayers to the people of New Orleans, the hallowed city that has served as a home for our festival for the last six years. At this devastating and trying time across the southeast, we are awaiting guidance from city and state officials, as New Orleans faces an extensive rebuilding process. Stay tuned for information as it develops.

I think this Breaking News release from wdsu.com puts the final nail in Voodoo Festival's coffin:

Associate Press wrote:

1:15 p.m.: Nagin: Hundreds, Maybe Thousands Dead
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin says hundreds, maybe thousands, of people have died in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the city on Monday. Nagin says it will at least two or three months before the city has electricity, restaurants won't be able to open and there won't be any commerce. At an impromptu news conference at the Hyatt Hotel, Nagin had no details about the deaths. -- Associated Press

It will take at least 2 months to get the city back to operation, so either the fest gets cancelled or they move it to someplace else.

i'm not so sure we're going to be voodooless...i'm thinking reschedule or relocate with a benefit twist. management from death from above 1979 stated that there has been no mention of cancellation (dave bookman from cfny in toronto made the call to him while i was standing beside him.)
this article mentions voodoos fate...

on a side note, this footage was taken before the levees broke...

kinda neat perspective if you look at the event map...http://tinyurl.com/aae6z

CNN showed footage of the fairgrounds tonight and the water was considerably higher. no more grass....

its rather difficult to think about this while i watch the hell on CNN...i might be in total denial, but the thought of voodoo actually happening gives me some hope that new orleans will somehow find a way to heal its wounds.

I'm pretty sure Voodoo Festival is a no go...

Even after they get the water out, the bodies cleaned up, the streets picked up of debris, it still seems like that city is gonna be a disease pit of epic proportions from all the corpses and spoiled food everywhere, etc...

Still no announcement from the Voodoo Festival organizers about cancellation. This pisses me off, as I'm sure it does everyone else who bought tickets for the weekend, because it's very clear that New Orleans won't be able to host much of anything for several months.

I was hoping they'd cancel the show quickly and possibly give us options for refunds, such as donating the cost of our tickets to a relief agency, etc. Maybe those of us who were planning to attend should write to them at info@voodoomusicfest.com and ask what they plan to do.

To all of you with questions and concerns about the status of this year's festival, please know we are working to move forward with alternative plans now that it's obvious that our hometown will not be available this year.

Our goal is for Voodoo to join the relief and rebuilding efforts by becoming a fundraiser, and providing aid to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We appreciate all your kind words, thoughts, and especially your patience during this transitional time. We will update you with our plans as they develop.

If there is anyone else like me, who is already holding tickets on American for a flight to NOLA, here is their policy for ticket changes or refunds. From talking to them on the phone, you have until the day before the end of the "Ticketed Travel Dates" period (or your travel date) to decide what to do. So you can wait until as long as late October to decide what to do with your ticket; presumeably Voodoo will have told us their plans by then.

I have a paid hotel reservation and two weekend tickets to the event. I have just learned, thanks to a friend who does lots of corporate travel, that I can call AmEx and ask for a refund on the hotel reservation because of special circumstances. I dunno what I'm gonna do with the Voodoo tickets because I've made alternate plans now. I'm hoping they make it possible for the money we spent on tickets to go towards hurricane relief.

**edit** AmEx has refunded the hotel payment and will notify me when the dispute is resolved. They were very understanding.**

Voodoo Music Experience Hopes To Go Forward

We are hard at work on a relocation plan for the 2005 Voodoo Music Experience. Developments currently in progress are a new festival site and city, as well as a shift in ambition, as Voodoo aspires to raise funds for those affected by Hurricane Katrina. The goal of this year's event, still set for Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October 30, will be to raise funds (details TBA) for supporting those in need and to aid in the rebuilding and preservation of the culture and heritage of New Orleans, which has served as home to Voodoo for the past six years.

"We want to be a part of the rebuilding process of New Orleans and we are dedicated to preserving the unique musical identity of our great city," says Stephen Rehage, founder and independent producer of the annual VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE. "I am in awe of the generosity and kindness of so many people and cities who are reaching out to provide us a home for this year's festival, the artists who are offering to perform and our fans and sponsors who are providing their continued support and patience during this difficult time. We look forward to harnessing this energy into something truly great for this community that so many of us, our friends and family call home."

Details will be released as soon as the information is confirmed. Original tickets will be honored, however, refunds are available by phone or at any Ticketmaster location. As for next year's event, the goal is to return to Voodoo's hometown of New Orleans. Stay tuned for additional updates and information regarding the 2005 VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE.

We thank you for your patience during these difficult times.

I'm soo dissapointed, I was really looking forward to going to New Orleans for the first time. I already had the plane & hotel booked. It's sad that New Orleans will probably never be as it once was before Katrina hit. I was really looking forward to this festival
