I seem to remember him writing some really shitty things about The Fragile and the Fragility shows. Not that this is a "Gettim boys!" kind of statement, but if he was pissy about NIN before and gave them a good review this time around, save for the "For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen NIN still sounds angsty" (which is a really lame critique, IMHO.)

Pop music critic Jim DeRogatis reviews With_Teeth in today's Chicago Sun-Times. (*** out of ****)

is it just me or does it seem like the critics' sentiments this time round are all like "its a great record but yeah we are tired of trent's angst" or whatever. But it doesn't seem like anybody has anything bad to say about the album. Maybe they are just afraid to say it is too good after the good reviews Fragile got? who knows. but I am getting tired of it. I am ready for an original review.

Actually, DeRogatis is a pretty well-respected rock critic (and drummer in a local Chicago band). He wrote (among other books) "Let It Blurt: The Life and Times of Lester Bangs." He and fellow Chicago rock critic, Greg Kott, have their own weekly radio show, "Sound Opinions." DeRogatis is probably my current favorite rock critic. I consider this to be a fairly favorable DeRogatis review.

HERE is a scan of the photo and caption that accompanied the review.

(Jim gave LCD Soundsystem's album 3.5 out of 4 stars; 1/2 star more than With Teeth.)

Honestly, these critics - as always - are all over the place. This guy says, "Trent Reznor breaks no new ground sonically with NIN's 'With Teeth.' but he makes up for it lyrically," then Iv'e read twice as many reviews that says musically, With Teeth is great but that it lacks lyrical depth. I just can't take what critics say seriously, 'cause even if their perceptions aren't being swayed the popular media and what they think will help line theri pockets more, then what they think is still just opinion. And honestly, a LOT of people just like to hate NIN.

He said shitty things about the Fragility 2.0 tour, yes. But, he said mostly favorable things about The Fragile. See Slate from October 19, 1999.

The double album is "a musical treasure trove. ... Hard rock simply doesn't get any smarter, harder, or more ambitious than this" (Jim DeRogatis, the Chicago Sun-Times).

I have a list of about five critics I like (my favorite one died), and that is, of course, remembering that they're CRITICS, after all. I don't always agree with DeRogatis, but he's not a big asskisser, either. (Well, 'cept maybe with Bangs.)

Shit, he probably was drunk off his ass. It's a sick, sad world. Very Happy

As for rock critics.. I have hung out with a few and we did not get along, because they wanted to play the guru handing down judgments from on high every time the subject of music came up. I don't like the number rating and letter grading and list making practices, at all. There are some critics who are more open-minded and generous than that, of course, and I try to pay attention to them instead..

You're right.

Reminds me of a time I had dinner with a music critic (husband of a composer friend of mine). . . .he displayed the exact behavior you outlined.

Unlucky for him, I was at a point in my life where I got real bitchy when irritated.

He got a wee tongue lashing.

Apologies if it's already been posted.
Rolling Stone magazine gave WT 3 1/2 stars out of 5. (They gave TDS and TF 4 back when.) I was pissed. The review was catty. I'm paraphrasing; I read this quickly in Barnes and Noble. Something about it took five years to write the music, and a few hours to write the lyrics. And 'he gets his lyrics off fan messageboards'. And something about THTF being a ready made canned single 'see, I can write a hit too'. And something about teen angst. Despite all this and the obvious fact the reviewer was desperately trying NOT to like WT, he eventually, begrudgingly, admitted it was good.

I saw an ad in a newspaper the other day for a band called:

BLEEDING THROUGH (www.purevolume.com/bleedingthrough)

Could this be the reason Trent didnt go with BLEED THROUGH?

If there ever were a conspiracy such as this floating about, it would be because of Garbages new album "bleed like me"

I was thinking about that albums title also.

Maybe Trent should've named the new album:

in today's NY Daily News, the gossip columnist writes about Trent's Spin comments that the Fragile "Tanking" drove Trent to a suicidal path.

(I'm getting so tired of Trent talking shit about the Fragile. What if WT also only sells 850,000 copies? And without the good reviews and grammy nomination? Its not 1994 anymore.)

I think a lot of these "columnist" seem to be taking his comments and just running with them - exagerating them to make for a more exciting (exciting=$$$) read. Also, on Trent's "shit talking" of The Fragile, a lot of people have mentioned this lately especially in the thread called I'm Tired of Two Things. Here's my view on why Reznor seems negative about The Fragile from this thread. I think it's probably just difficult for him to listen to it right now.

I agree with you and it's the reason I really don't like the Spin article.

Especially the whole Fragile record sales triggered a downward spiral lean.

It's annoying and quite misleading. Bad shit did occur around that time. . . but not because the record didn't sell what the label wanted it to.

That said. . Spin still thinks somehow. . . that distorting the facts makes for a more interesting story ($) when the real facts are interesting enough.

The Rock Sound interview was quite good on the other hand.

Acclaimed director David Fincher will be making a foray back into music videos for Nine Inch Nails. "Only" was shot on April 19 and will be in post through late June. Look for this video to incorporate some intensive CG effects.

Fincher has directed the feature films Seven and Fight Club. His music video body of work includes clips for Madonna, Aerosmith and The Rolling Stones.

This is very good news. I'm excited. With a good/interesting video, Only could be a huge hit. The Closer of 2005. Although Trent's whole thing about going back to basics with his videos only seems to have lasted for one clip.

Well, he needed some excuse for canning an already-existing video shoot, right? I guess he couldn't have just said that the GNN video sucked.
