I was like, what? Free screening of a NIN concert film on a college campus that is in driving distance from Sacramento, the Bay Area, San Jose, Stockton...why on earth do you think the turn out would be low?
I don't know. I have to think up what to reply. Try to explain how big this is online or something.
This is all tentative, but a screening on a public college campus isn't a bad idea, right?
No... it's not a bad idea at all. It definitely sounds like a great idea.
And as far as drawing people in, it's always going to depend on how you advertise. I'd recommend talking to local radio stations, looking into doing a charity event, a raffle, or maybe even looking into having some sort of pre-event (depending on if you're having it in a theater or not - like having a local DJ spin for a small pre-party).

Thanks, those all sound like good ideas. I think I could probably contact the campus radio station or something. Have a facebook event thingy set up. Or just have fliers around campus. Hopefully I can convince them it can work~I'll post something if it does.

I think College students + FREE is a winning combo, personally. Of all the settings, that's probably the perfect one. College students are always looking for cheap ways to entertain themselves. Loads of kids need time to kill between lectures/between school and the bar, and if you put it somewhere were bored passers by will walk in, I'm sure it'll be a hit.
I organised a film club when I was at school, and the "bored before a meeting" audience was a big part of the people that came. Piggyback on some other event if you have to. Or just turn a TV on in the school cafe. Guerilla style.

Anyone invite Mike Masnick of TechDirt.com to a screening? Think he's in LA. Since Reznor is one of his examples for music marketing (Josh Freese too) I'm guessing he'd attend and give it a write-up on his site.
Might be worth Tweeting him.

How do I get tickets for the screening in Houston? I cannot seem to do this in the West Oaks website and I'm at work so I can't see the Facebook event.

how nice. a guy from St. Petersburg just wrote in ru_nin community livejournal that TOIOU will be shown at a local ROCK-MUSEEK music movies festival. and they gonna charge $6 for entry.
there's no info on
festival site yet, he linked
the site of the Rodina cinema where it's going go be held, it's only in russian and doesn't say anything about entry fees but I've no doubt they really going to charge money.

This guy emailed me, and I told him that I'd only be happy with him charging if stuff was included in the price - like how the Belgian guys charged 4 Euros but everyone got a free drink (4 euros is pretty much what a drink costs there anyway). He said he would "think about something nice to give the people".
If you want to snoop and see how legit it really is acidpolly, it would be appreciated. I answered his email query because Clive was busy that day, so I'm not aware of the full backstory between them. If they burn copies, provide free food, give away t-shirts etc I don't mind the $5 so much (because you're paying for this extra stuff rather than the screening) but if people are getting nothing in return (meaning that people are paying to see the screening) ...it's out of order and this guy knows it.
In general, I'm seeing people starting to try to justify raising/charging money for things other than charity off the back of this and it's starting to annoy me.

well I'll definitely try to get all information possible about this event but it's most likely we'll know how it went only afterwards...
basically I'm sure all these attempts to make people pay in exchange for smth definitely cheaper than it costs (4 Euros for a drink? really?) is just these cinemas wanting to earn money from the screening. from the other hand if it's the only chance to get it shown on a big screen (and this cinema is nice, it shows independent movies unlike all other in SPb)... maybe it's not that bad after all.
