For Lights in the Sky Lollapalooza was the only Chicago gig, if I would've known they weren't going to come back through & play that show indoors I would've gone to another show on the tour so I could've seen it under more "controlled" conditions instead of outside in a huge field.

So what do we think about this "reinventing" stuff? Is that a reference to NIN's stage presence, drastically different studio material, both, ???

Awesome news, simply awesome. Can't wait to see what Trent's up to. The setlist. The gear. The visuals. The energy.

I specially loved the "...dates worldwide to follow..." bit. NIN's in debt with Brazil since 2008, when the band cancelled their concerts in here some weeks before the dates.

I'm not sure why you guys are so excited? NIN hasn't had the same pop since the Fragility tour.

Studies have shown that 99% of you agree.

HTDA just hasn't done it for me and in many ways I've been taking the same hiatus from NIN as Trent. This news has got me totally excited. Announce the dates and I'll book my flights! I don't think for a second I'll be able to wait for them to come to the UK. Cannot wait!

I'm a bit late to this, Is this tour supporting a greatest hits release or new material?

Probably not. No mention of any new releases. Not yet, at least.

I guess it's going to be both. I think the stage presence will certainly be different - 6 multi-instrumentalist musicians. If anything I think Trent will look more at visuals rather than stage presence, very much the way Lights in the Sky was heading. Different studio material? Quite possibly - just look at who he's got with him. I think he'll look at performing stuff we've never heard live before.

    From Adrian's blog:

    surprise # 2
today it is being announced at last.
something I've been wanted to tell you for a month now:
I've been asked to be the guitarist for nine inch nails!
we are going on an extensive world tour,
reaching places even I have never been!

I'll be moving (temporarily) to LA in may
for 3 months of rehearsals after which the tour begins.
that's about as much as I know for sure for now.

daniel rowland will be assisting me on the tour
which should allow us some time to continue
our third year of making my new solo project.

here is what trent reznor released today:
Nine Inch Nails are touring this year.

I was working with Adrian Belew on some musical ideas, which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to re-think the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be, and the idea of playing a show. Calls were made to some friends, lots of new ideas were discussed, and a show was booked - which led to another, which somehow led to a lot of shows.

The band is reinventing itself from scratch and will be comprised of Eric Avery, Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini, Joshua Eustis, Ilan Rubin, and me. The first shows will begin this summer, followed by a full-on arena tour of the US this fall, and lots of other dates worldwide to follow through 2014.

Lots of details and dates to come. See you soon.
    TR

I hope to see you there.
keep checking for updates on the entire process.

    love,
    adrian

Can you imagine the level of excitement on this board the first night NIN play live again? They could play literally anything..

As long as he's not written a dubstep album I'm happy.

And on the anniversary of following them around the UK in 2007...

Trent, do a similar run in the UK to those shows, will ya? No arenas plz.

(P.S. I hope I'm not ripped off in terms of an Irish date in 2014)

He's doing arena shows. That means he's going to have to attract a lot of mainstream ticket buyers. Joe Sixpack is not going to buy a NIN ticket to see Ghosts and soundtrack work and obscure songs from the catalog. There has to be some big "hook" to hang this tour from.

open up with Closer so that Joe Sixpack can have his fix and be on his merry way out.

So many possibilities.. We could see guest spots for Karen O for the immigrant song, Dave Grohl & Co for Mantra and more importantly, a live version of the Tetsuo Theme!

There's now a NinWiki article on this tour. Feel free to update it as more information becomes available.

So 2 weeks of HTDA touring and then immediately into rehearsals.
3 Months... how does that compare to prior rehearsals? Seems like a long time. That might shed a little light onto what we are in for.

I'm nervous about this because the way it ended before was perfect. To come back after a farewell it better be fucking brilliant.

The lineup gives me the impression it's going to be very electronic.

I hope they do something different anyway. I don't think it makes sense to start where he left off with the live show. It's got to be something fresh

I'm not convinced they'll be arenas in Europe though. I might head over to the US for a few arena shows but I'm hoping they'll be the mid-sized venues over here that he normally does.

I'm hoping for Brixton if/when they play London. It's the perfect sized venue, small enough to feel intimate but just large enough to put on a 'big' show. Saw them for the first time at Brixton, way back in 2005. It would be wonderful to come full-circle and see them there again.

So the tour's due to start August/September. I wonder which date will fall on my birthday.

I think everything will be different. The addition of a 6th member is huge in my book. I think it will add a lot to the overal sound of the band. Can also add more diversity to song selection.
Also, I can't imagine Trent tackling Belew into the crowd during March of The Pigs.

I can't actually imagine Belew playing March of the Pigs as it is currently written.

I know this is so incredibly foolhardy given TR's distaste for the song but... might this not finally be the perfect lineup for The Perfect Drug?!?

Yeah, just think of all the redundant crap you could buy at Hot Topic with that money! You could buy like, 9 more copies of the Antichrist Superstar vinyl, and maybe have enough left to get a discounted Blink 182 t-shirt.

I'll pay. Shows have to happen first.
