    Clark (Warp Records)

Trent Reznor, Richard D. James, Tom Jenkinson, Amon Tobin... Chris Clark.

Yes, he's a musical genius! How does this guy not have a thread on ETS?!?!?!

    An introduction...

Sixteen years since his debut and eight albums later, a now rightly considered cornerstone of Warp's core artist base, Clark, lines up what is sure to amount to his most cutting edge and immaculately scored vision of varied dancefloor dynamics and richly-ground techno hydraulics with the high-rise hypnotics that make up Death Peak.

Having first appeared way back in 2001 with the brain-hammering Clarence Park album, Chris Clark (as he was then known) instantly slotted in perfectly with both the old and new artists that made up the cutting-edge Warp vanguard. While his music, at times reflected a strong influence bled in from the caustic industrial puzzles of Autechre and the analogue post-jungle crunch of AFX & Squarepusher, Clark melted these influences down into a concrete vat that carried a strong influence of out and out techno. On occasion, he has taken this need 2 jack and let it rise to the forefront of his productions (as found best on the killer off-kilter Turning Dragon LP). It's on Death Peak though that he transcends all of these influences fully and firmly to the front of his mind and sequencer to create a flooring vision of post-genre electronica.

Having had the album title going round in his head since summer last year, Death Peak sounds a lot like you might imagine it would, albeit in your wildest hopes and dreams, given its serious title. Truly an incredible and starkly visceral series of recordings, Clark appears to take a strong influence from the battered 12"s of mid 90s warehouse techno and drum & bass that litter so many of our collections, yet mixes them with the ethereal electronics and library record exploration previously unheard from him. This is all topped off with a dose of perfectly peppered throughout and rare use of the human voice, described by Clark as "the most perfect synth".

I first heard Clark when his album "Turning Dragon" came out back in 2008. Like with the first time I discovered Amon Tobin, Clark was a completely blind buy. The artwork caught my intention and I saw that it was released on a label with a great reputation for amazing electronic music. And I've been a fan since, collecting every release that I can from him. I got to finally see him live in 2015 for his self titled album tour with Nosaj Thing and Rival Consoles as openers. I'm a fan of all three artists and they put on amazing shows.

Clark is going on tour with Com Truise...

    More info at http://www.throttleclark.com

"Beacon" and "Winter Linn" taken from his previous self titled album...

He also did the score for The Last Panthers, a Warp Films & Haut et Court TV Production for Sky and Canal+ and shown on the Sundance Channel in the US....

Yeah, I must say Totems Flare is definitely my favorite album from him.

His EPs are also very important listens. They can be just as good as the albums. Usually each album has its own EP of more music. Totems Flare has the Growls Garden EP and etc. He really loves to give Japan extra music as well.

He did a live performance and Q&A on Facebook yesterday and according to one of his answers to a question, he still has a bunch of leftover material from Totems Flare era that he hopes to get around to digging through and figuring out a way to release it. Seems like he has quite a bit of unheard material.

I listened to Clark when it first was released, and now Death Peak (fwiw, I keep almost calling it Death Magnetic). Having only listened to these albums from him, I think I prefer Clark more so far. It definitely feels grander while Death Peak has less of a structure and feels more experimental, which will take some time to grow on me. I'll definitely need to check out his earlier albums soon.

His earlier work was a bit different, but pretty much, you can't go wrong with any album from Body Riddle on. My personal fave is Totems Flare and I quite love the self titled album. Iradelphic is quite different, a much darker sound with more natural instruments. Iradelphic is more like his score for The Last Panthers.

    Here's a track off Iradelphic...

My favorite track off my favorite Clark album...

I got into him when I saw the art for Empty the Bones of You, but Body Riddle was when he ascended to proper unique greatness, the Throttle Furniture EP is outstanding too. I've dipped in and out since then, Totems Flare was great, the vocal tracks like Growls Garden are immense.

Yeah from Body Riddle on, just astounding. I'm loving the new album!

Luckily, I have all of his albums & EPs including the Japanese extras for each. He's also released a few one off tracks recently from compilations and stuff.

Back in 2012, Clark performed live for Boiler Room...

This was just before the release of Iradelphic. What's pretty cool is that you can hear an early version of the track Mirage Trooper, which only just got an official release last year. So a track that was a few years in the making. It first was released for Adult Swim's Singles Series in 2016 and Clark later put it up on his Bleepstore as a single.

His set from Bloc 2015 broadcasted on Boiler Room...

I was lucky enough to see him during this tour in Brooklyn, NY. He has definitely enhanced his live show. More gear, video projection. His Death Peak tour setup looks even crazier.

I don't believe he has a thread here, but certainly deserves one. I love Clark. I got into him when Turning Dragon came out. I stumbled upon the CD at my local shop in release day. They had these little scan stations where you can scan a barcode and hear clips from that CD. I got to track 2 and said, "I'm buying this!" and did.

Totems Flare is my favorite album of his. Him, Amon Tobin, and Lorn are legends in my book.

I got to see Clark live in 2015. Him, Nosaj Thing, and Rival Consoles toured together. All 3 of them were awesome. One the best shows/line ups I've seen. That same year I saw Squarepusher with Machinedrum and Autechre with Cygnus and DJ Rob Hall. That was a good year of shows.
