Rob Zombie's a mixed bag when it comes to filmmaking. He started out strong with House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects is fantastic. It's certainly his best film. I really like Halloween, and while I understand why people didn't like it, you could have done a hell of a lot worse when it came to remaking such a horror classic. That said, Halloween II was shit, El Superbeasto was just not my cup of tea, and I've heard terrible things about Lords of Salem. It's an interesting concept to have the movie funded by fans, but the synopsis isn't the slightest bit original (then again, what modern horror movie is?) and reminds me of the video game Manhunt that came out ten years ago. Not exactly the same plot but that's what it reminded me of.

i am in the same boat. i fucking LOVE horror but can never find anything good enough.

These are a couple that (as far as i know) didn't get huge releases. The Mexican made Here Comes the Devil was pretty damned good. Absentia was decent and so was Grey Skies. Mama was fucking amazing. Berberian Sound Studio and Pontypool were both very interesting on an intellectual kind of level.

I assume you have seen Oculus, The Conjuring, Insidious 1 and 2 etc.

That being said, i came to this thread for the same reason. I can't find SHIT that is actually scary or at least dark and intelligent.

I go for the more paranormal type horror movies as opposed to slashers.

I wish James Wan would skip the Fast and Furious franchise and just keep making horror movies, as he's clearly on a creative high. It's a nice surprise considering I thought he was out for the count after the first Saw, which I love. However, Dead Silence and Death Sentence were not good, at all.

I haven't seen Oculus and I regret not catching that when it was in theatres. I've heard nothing but good things. I'll check out Here Comes the Devil and Absentia, as well as the others you recommended. I liked Mama until they actually showed what 'Mama' actually looked like. I felt the last twenty minutes really killed the movie for me. Not what I was expecting and I didn't care for it that much.

Off the top of my head for recommendations: I Saw The Devil, You're Next, The Woman, The Innkeepers

It sounds like we have similar tastes, man. I've seen the inkeepers but not the other three. But if You're Next is anything like Funny Games, that shit is not my cup of tea. I don't like seeing people tortured to death both psychologically and physically.

Have you seen Antichrist? It was fucking AMAZING, although i found it to be too artsy to call it pure horror.

Oculus is a must see for any supernatural horror fan.

Not knocking you but you hate Funny Games for the shit it pulls with the murder angle after torture but like Anticrist which, in my opinion, has ten times worse content?

You know, that crossed my mind.
And here's what it is. I feel so much empathy for the people being hurt in the home invasion genre that it just fucks my head up. I just can't do it man. I can't hang.
I can handle a wife murdering a husband (like in antichrist,) and even the baby dying.
What i CAN'T handle is seeing intruders come into a family's home and terrorize, kill and torture them, in front of each other no less.
It's just the way my mind works.

I wouldn't group Funny Games and You're Next together simply because of the way they're both executed. Funny Games is very disturbing and played through as a straight drama with a mean streak running through it. It's the emotional equivalent of a sadistic little kid pulling the legs off an ant while it writhes in pain or tearing the wings off a butterfly. There is a very sick feeling you get while watching it. You're Next is a horror-comedy. While the family is being killed off one by one, there's a lot of dry humor that puts a lot more enjoyment into the movie than something like Funny Games could ever muster. You're Next is The Strangers with a sense of humor.

I haven't checked out Antichrist. I'll definitely see it soon. Also, to the guy who recommended The Cabin in the Woods and Evil Dead 2013, I agree with you 100%. Two of the strongest horror films to have been released in the last two years. I love Cabin in the Woods and fucking hate the fact that most people who watch it don't understand the whole thing is making fun of the horror genre. I worked at a movie theatre at the time of its release and I was baffled how easily the concept went over people's heads. The Evil Dead remake was better than I expected. I went in with an open mind and absolutely no expectations. Repeat viewings at home have made me really come to like it.

Antichrist blew my fucking mind. I ALMOST hesitate to call it horror because it is so artsy, but it IS pretty horrific.
If you like darkness and artsy films, watch it asap!
