Man, I paused the episode twice during that. I thought I accidentally hit play on my music library, especially when the music kept going after they cut away from the living room.

So, I was thinking that the quiet angsty girl has a similar face to the girl who is very prominent in the comics right now. After tonight's episode... there are even more parallels. Very interesting...

Chris Hardwick is a 10/10 dude, you're out of your mind.

EDIT: Here's the segment for those who don't watch TWD.

Well that was a horrible use of NIN material.

I'd rather have watched Rick stand there and shoot everyone from Alexandria apart from Deanna and Jessie, then Demon Seed kicks in with the lyrics "now I know what this is all about. Now I know exactly what I am," zooming in on Rick's bloodied face.

I'm not sure about the use of NIN in this scene, it kinda felt out of place. But it might be just me having heard that song thousand times and never really see it as something that could be used in a TV show. It's definitely great to show NIN to wider audience though

For me, nin is always distracting in cinema. As soon as I hear it, i think I'm going a little crazy like I'm the only one who hears it. Then I want everyone to know "omg you guys! This is nin!!!!111"

Edit: I do think lyrically the song has a place in last night's episode.

This is killing me - I really want to watch this, but we've got a whole series behind on the Walking Dead and I don't want to spoil it, so I'm going to have to wait god knows how long!

    NIN makes everything better...

The entire time I was watching The Jinx I was thinking to myself... "This would be much better with some stuff off the Ghosts album". Then in the last episode my wife turns to me and says, "They should have gotten Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to do the music".

Somewhat Damaged was the perfect choice for the intro of the Walking Dead. Good thing they chose that song though.

Can anyone explain what the significance of the "run mix" was and why those characters were listening to it?

I assume it was the soundtrack for going on supply runs and it was created by Aiden who was in charge of the runs..

That just gave me an idea... but I'd get my ass banned from YouTube.

Here's a breakdown of the opening scene from TWD, from the author's point of view

    http://radio.com/2015/03/22/music-of-walking-dead-nine-inch-nails-somewhat-damaged/

During the show’s fifth season, we’ll be talking with Thomas Golubic of SuperMusicVision, who helps choose the show’s music, to get the scoop on what you heard on the latest episode.

Golubic says, “Trent Reznor’s music has been a running influence on The Walking Dead and our team was thrilled to feature one of his songs.”

so a song that's in 9/4 (but that really evens out to three sets of 3/4) is weirder for you to run to than a song that has three sets of 7/8 followed by one set of 8/8? ...ok

With_Teeth has probably the best list NIN of songs to run to, in my experience.

I'm assuming you don't watch the show. Basically, what happened is...

a character died last episode, and the mix CD was that character's mix CD. The people listening to the CD are the family of the character that died, shortly after finding out. I interpret that scene as being sort of one of those awkward grieving moments where something is a reminder of someone that died even though the that thing isn't really "appropriate" for the moment. Also, as others said, the lyrics are strangely fitting for the episode, and, judging by his choice of music, the person that died seemed to have a weird sense of humor about the zombie apocalypse, although he was also just kind of a military-wannabe douchebag bro.

It wasn't a playlist for running. It was a playlist for making supply runs. He listened to it in a van.

Imagine the uproar if Beth were still alive and did a folksy cover of somewhat damaged.

    RIP Beth.

Speaking from personal experience, Somewhat Damaged works perfectly when you're jogging or exercising.

True, but people complaining about it will probably be said until the end of time on this forum any time NIN is played on anything. Ever.
