Do they think of them as rock dinosaurs or something?
The thing with NIN's music is it's very diverse. It only takes a non fan to come over and listen for 2 minutes to decide if it's something worth staying for. People at this festival were going INSANE for stuff like Baauer, RL Grime, Girl Talk, Flying Lotus. Like dancy, bassy, dubstep stuff.

NIN's music isn't all electronic based. If I were unfamiliar with the band and came over during something like Piggy or Hurt, I wouldn't even give the band a second chance. And that was exactly me for some of the dance music I listed above... I went to check it out, saw a song or 2 and decided it wasn't my thing and left. If it wasn't the EDM stuff drawing the crowds, it was the hip-hop. Kendrick Lamar literally ended his set on the adjacent stage seconds before NIN hit the stage. Kendrick drew at least 10,000 strong. And most of those people did NOT come over to NIN after. Maybe a few of them did, but from what I heard, not for longer than 5 minutes. I know this because one of the guys camping with us was at Kendrick, knows nothing about NIN, so I thought it would be cool that since him and I have such different musical tastes, he could experience NIN for the first time live and see what all his other friends keep making a big deal of. Needless to say, he didn't like it... he said he came by looking for us and after a few mins of not being able to find it us, he just went back to the campsite to sit there by himself.

Here I thought this friend of ours who has never been exposed to NIN before is gonna get to see NIN for the first time live, what a treat that will be. Turns out I was wrong as he didn't care to even give it a chance. I'm willing to bet that is what the majority of this festival's crowd was thinking as well.

With NIN, you either love them or you don't. When the festival originally announced NIN was getting a 2.5 hr block some people on facebook started bitching that "nobody wants to hear 2.5 hrs of the Nine Inch Nails" (yes, they wrote "the" nine inch nails, not joking).

I also read some review that they basically did compare NIN to rock dinosaurs of today. It's sad to think that, but it's true. Music has changed in the last 10 years drastically.
Speaking of Dinosaurs... Dinosaur Jr was there as well, lol... not sure how many people that crowd drew as it was 1:30 in the afternoon when they went on and we were still chilling at the campsite getting ready for the day so we missed them.

    I am LOSING MY SHIT.

I have a kinda shitty ticket for my first show. But now there is ONE GODDAMN TICKET available DEAD CENTER in ROW 12 for that show. I have been on hold for 5 minutes now, trying to exchange my ticket. I keep watching the two next to it become available and disappear over and over again.

I'm on the verge of having a panic attack.

They won't let me do it because my mom purchased the ticket and then transferred it to me... So I have to transfer it back to her, and she would have to call. And then transfer the ticket back to me.

    What a fucking clusterfuck.

By the time she gets home, I'm sure the ticket will be gone. I am so mad. My hands are shaking.

I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO READ STICKY POSTS

It's not just nin. It was like that for coachella too, arcade fire couldn't pull shit compared to whatever dj was playing next door.

Yeah, the first point in this article basically sums it up pretty well...

    "
    1. Indie rock is dead
We heard the death knell of indie rock loud and clear at Pemberton. The core of the 20-something crowd (largely thanks to girls wanting to dance) was much more willing to lose its collective mind to the sound and fury of EDM artists and rappers like RL Grime, Baauer, deadmau5, Kendrick Lamar and Chance The Rapper rather than hear The New Pornographers, Gold and Youth, Metric and Metz, who all played for just a handful of faithfuls. Expect more “legacy” names like Soundgarden and EDM superstars headlining the festival in the future, and a mid-day card with more DJs."

    It worked out pretty well!

I upgraded to row 13. And the next night I'll be in row 3. Worth the few hours of panicking!

Just a friendly reminder, the Tour Journal is not for general discussion. It's a place for attendees to document the night. Do not post in there if you didn't attend:

Do not post in show date threads unless you were in attendance

If you have a follow-up question or comment, post it in this general discussion thread. I will continue to shit on anyone who posts in there who didn't attend.

I don't even know if this belongs in this thread, but here we go:

Remember the weird pic that Trent posted to Instagram a few days ago?

Well, regardless of how bizarre that thing in the foreground looks, I recognized the picture in the back. I recalled seeing something very similar to it at Lollapalooza Brasil, right before the gig. There was this weird-ass portrait of Trent just laying there in front of the stage, that a crew member would later put away somewhere. Like, an actual painting that someone made.

So I post that Instagram picture to a NIN Facebook group, and the author of the portrait shows up. I go to her profile, and...

So, basically, some crew member picked that thing up and saw it fit to actually deliver it to Trent. Then, a few months later, he's actually taking it ON TOUR with the band. That's the memory he got from Brazil. Besides being the country that yields him shit ticket sales every time, we are the country that provided this souvenir.

Judging by Instagram it looks like we're still dealing with the same setlist so far.

Jesus...I hope they switch up something. Atleast swap up Reptile and The Wretched in there or something.

I would honestly take The Hand That Feeds extended into 80 minutes with a Purest Feeling bridge while Trent flexed his asshole into an Xbox Kinect and had it projected onto the panels and be perfectly content if they played The Wretched and Reptile afterward.

No matter what, people are gonna bitch. I've seen those two repeatedly. I've never seen The Great Destroyer, and I haven't seen Eraser since my first show in 2006. So I'll be perfectly content if the set stays as is...

Did tonight's show start early because of a curfew? I wasn't expecting setlist updates until around 11pm. I guess outdoor venues are hard to figure out set times for.

I saw pretty much this same setlist twice in May and it was pretty fucking fantastic. "Eraser" was a highlight both nights and the production for "The Great Destroyer" is insane. The only difference for my shows was "The Frail"/"The Wretched" instead of "Terrible Lie" plus "The Becoming" one night and "Burn" the other.

The Becoming is one of my faves. So it would be awesome to have that thrown in. But after seeing The Great Destroyer videos, I'm REALLY hoping for that on one of my nights.

I honestly don't give a shit at this point. I'm really excited. It's bittersweet, knowing that this is likely to be it for a few years. I'm excited like a little kid! And my shows aren't until the 1st and 2nd!

Nice! I'll be at both of those. "The Becoming" was really awesome, better than it was on the NINJA/Wave Goodbye tour. I'm surprised it made so few appearances on the European tour, because it went over REALLY well with the London crowd. I wonder if they worked it into the current production setup, its production was minimal, just alternating red and green lights based on the part of the song, so not sure if that works with the screens.

They didn't bring the Festival 2013 setup around the US on a tour like this, so I understand the thought process behind it. It's something that's easy to re-do, it still looks awesome, and more people get to see it in person.

Trent doesn't care about the jaded NIN fans on Echoing the Sound. He doesn't care about the people that watched the Lollapalooza livestream. He cares about the people that are actually at the show, who always say they enjoy it. That's it.

Sure, it's not exciting to sit and see each setlist every night, but when is it ever? He's not Bruce Springsteen. The setlist is going to always be the same big blocks of songs every night on a given leg.

Having only ever seen one show, I can't wait for TGD (YZ is one of my absolute favorites) and Eraser. I just adored Reptile and The Wretched so much live, they've always been strong favorites of mine on album and in person I can't believe how high they topped the originals. If seeing Reptile or The Wretched means not seeing Terrible Lie, 1,000,000 or Piggy, that's a swap I'm willing to make.

Oh, and as for your shows not being until the 1st or 2nd, I don't know what I'm supposed to do with myself until the 10th and 11th next month. The good thing is that they're more likely to work new things into the sets, work out any technical kinks, etc. Have fun getting 2 different openers!

Soundgarden is indeed changing its set a little bit. They closed today with Slaves & Bulldozers. Hopefully it's the extended outro/feedback version, which is beyond awesome. You guys are in for a treat.

The Wretched is always fantastic. Something about 1,000,00 live just gets to me. On the album, I'm like "okay". But for some reason, LIVE, I just fucking love it.

Really, I'll just fucking love anything.

I saw them at Lolla last year, which was August 2nd. August 2nd will be my last show. What a great year it has been for me - 5 shows! Which I know is nothing compared to some of you folks. But it's something that I never thought that I would get to do!
