    Yeah you can't compare Swift's overwhelming popularity to NIN's one, even passive-aggressively.

    The world wide audience for NIN to fund TV spots just isn't there. I haven't ever met a NIN fan in the wild. People who knew of it, yeah, but people who would buy tickets for it after a TV spot, no. Nowadays TV spots are for Beyoncé, Swift and what, Muse maybe.
    NIN is nowhere near that when it comes to popularity and tickets sales. We are a niche market, relatively to those juggernauts.

    That's a bit of a pointlessly douche-like intrusive PR move, no ?
    By which I mean, U2 probably called dibs on that.

    NIN logo on clouds in major cities, bat signal style. If that even really works. I mean, he already spoke to Bruce Wayne once.

    @nineinchnerd

    1989 has so far sold over 5 million copies domestically, approaching 10 million worldwide (as of June). Hesitation Marks hasn't even gone Gold yet. TS is a much, much bigger artist than Trent is, and so yes, she can have TV advertisements.

    I rarely see ads on TV for albums, even for people who are superstars. Besides, Trent knows his audience, and he knows that a lot of us are active on the internet, so that's where he does his promotion.

    What are the current sales figures for HM, anyone know? I bought two when it dropped, one standard CD and one deluxe CD.

    "As of December 2013, the album has sold 187,000 copies." It was their fifth top five album and the first to top Canadian charts, NIN's highest charting album in the UK, certified gold in Canada. So it was fairly successful for NIN at the time, considering this is almost two years later I'd say assuming something close to or around 250,000 would be pretty fair, right?

    I think a Swiftian type success relies on many prongs in a marketing strategy, she is constantly getting various up and coming hype acts to perform on stage with her to get in the press for example, I think tv advertising spots are a very small part of marketing these days particularly with Netflix etc. what percentage of the population are even watching certain shows so a guaranteed audience will make advertising worthwhile? I don't think any record company would think it would be worth the dollars to do that for a band who is at the end of career rather than start, Trent is always threatening to call it quits

    Netflix isn't as worldwide as you'd think. It's reaching out, but in a lot of countries it's far from replacing TV... The web and TV aren't interchangeable yet.

    I probably overstated Netflix but there's games etc. that also vie for attention. when NIN blew up in America there was probably a massive audience of people watching Letterman rave about the Woodstock performance. Saturday night shows in the uk used to have massive audiences, not so much now

    It hit #3 on the US billboard charts which is very impressive for a non-kid-friendly album these days.

    Why not? You act like this album doesn't deserve sales and I wonder if you've actually heard it.

    You ask questions, ignore the answers and go on non sequiturs. It gets a tad annoying.

    There's a dedicated thread here where it's been discussed at length.

    So does anyone want venture a guess as to how far along Trent actually is with new music? Asked about new music by rolling stone, he did respond in the affirmative, though also downplaying it, saying he was "'messing around' in 'lab' time." So what do you guys think that really means? I wasn't really following NIN back in the day, so to those who have, what does something like this tell you? Is Trent further along that he lets on? Or is he far far away from even recording a single new song?

    That's not really how he does things. As almost all albums are concept albums, it's not "write song one, write songs two", it's more a steady growth of music and ideas. He could mess around in the new studio and make a song in a few days, or he could spend months in there and use none of it. He doesn't really do demos - which is why we have sadly so few.
